SPACE

We approach the Earth via the moon. A NARRATOR speaks as we zoom in.

NARRATOR: (V.O.) It is said that in the final days of planet Earth, everyone had bad dreams.

We zoom in on Britain and then to a London street where people are gathered to celebrate Christmas.

NARRATOR: (V.O.) To the west of the north of that world, the human race did gather, in celebration of a pagan rite, to banish the cold and the dark.

EXT. LONDON STREET, NIGHT

People are milling about the shops as a band plays by a Christmas tree. We see WILF walking down the street.

NARRATOR: (V.O.) Each and every one of those people had dreamt of the terrible things to come. But they forgot, because they must. They forgot their nightmares of fire and w*r and insanity. They forgot, except for one.

WILF has a flash of a man laughing evilly. He shakes his head and continues on. He hears a choir singing carols and makes his way to a church.

INT. CHURCH, NIGHT

WILF walks in and sees the children’s choir singing. He takes off his hat and looks at the large stained glass window behind the altar. He walks up the center aisle, entranced. There, at the bottom of the left panel, is a small TARDIS! An older WOMAN in a white suit appears behind him.

WOMAN: They call it the Legend of the Blue Box.

WILF: Oh. Well, I've never been in here before. I'm not one for churches - too cold.

WOMAN: This was the site of a convent, back in the 1300s. It's said a demon fell from the sky. Then a man appeared. A man in a blue box. They called him the sainted physician. He smote the demon and then disappeared.

WILF: That's a bit of a coincidence.

WOMAN: It's said there's no such thing as coincidence. Who knows? Perhaps he's coming back.

WILF: Oh, that would make my Christmas!

WILF turns around and the WOMAN is gone. He looks about nervously and then back at the window. He flashes on the laughing man again.

EXT. OOD-SPHERE SURFCE, DAY

There is a light snow falling and a strong wind is blowing. The TARDIS materializes. The DOCTOR steps out wearing a straw hat and a pink lei. OOD-SIGMA is waiting for him.

DOCTOR: Ah! Now! Sorry! There you are. (closes TARDIS and puts hands in his pockets) So, where were we? I was summoned, wasn't I? An Ood, in the snow, calling to me. (walks forwards) Well, I didn't exactly come straight here. Had a bit of fun, y'know, travelled about, did this and that. Got into trouble, you know me. It was brilliant. I saw the Phosphorous Carousel of the Great Magellan Gestadt. Saved a planet from the Red Carnivorous Maw. Named a galaxy Alison. Got married. That was a mistake. Good Queen Bess, and let me tell you, her nickname is no longer... (clears throat) Anyway... what d'you want?

OOD-SIGMA: You should not have delayed.

DOCTOR: The last time I was here, you said my song would be ending soon. And I'm in no hurry for that.

OOD-SIGMA: You will come with me.

DOCTOR: Hold on, better lock the TARDIS.

The DOCTOR reaches into his pocket, pulls out something and points it at the TARDIS. The TARDIS beeps and we hear the sound of a door locking. It was the key.

DOCTOR: See? Like a car. I locked it like a car. Like...it's funny. No? Little bit? Blimey, try to make an Ood laugh.

The DOCTOR follows OOD-SIGMA.

DOCTOR: So how old are you now, Ood Sigma?

He looks ahead and sees a city carved from stone and ice.

DOCTOR: Ah! Magnificent! (nudges OOD-SIGMA) Oh, come on! That is...splendid! You've achieved all this in how long?

OOD-SIGMA: 100 years.

DOCTOR: Then we've got a problem, ‘cos all of this is way too fast. Not just the city, I mean your ability to call me. Reaching all the way back to the 21st century. Something's accelerating your species way beyond normal.

OOD-SIGMA: And the Mind of the Ood is troubled.

DOCTOR: Why, what's happened?

OOD-SIGMA: Every night, Doctor. Every night, we have bad dreams.

ELDER OOD: (V.O.) Returning, returning, returning, it is slowly returning.

INT. ELDER COUNCIL CHAMBER

The Ood are gathered around a small table on which a censer lies releasing releasing a smoke that possibly aids the trance state.

ELDER-OOD: Through the dark and the fire and the blood, always returning, returning to this world. It is returning and he is returning and they are returning, but too late, too late, far too late, he is come.

The DOCTOR enters with OOD-SIGMA.

OOD-SIGMA: Sit with the Elder of the Ood and share the dreaming.

DOCTOR: So... Right. (sits) Hallo!

ELDERS:
(chant) You will join. You will join. You will join. You will join. You will join. You will join. You will join.

They hold hands, forming a circle, and the DOCTOR sees the laughing face, sees the MASTER.

ELDER-OOD: He comes to us, every night. I think all the peoples of the universe dream of him now.

DOCTOR: That man is dead.

ELDER-OOD: There is yet more. Join us. (join hands once more) Events are taking shape, so many years ago, and yet changing the now. There is a man...

We hear the MASTER laugh and then the DOCTOR "sees"

INT. NOBLE KITCHEN, NIGHT

WILF is sitting at the kitchen table, deeply worried.

ELDER-OOD: (V.O.) So scared…

DOCTOR: (V.O.) Wilfred! Is he all right? What about Donna, is she safe?

INT. ELDER COUNCIL CHAMBER

ELDER-OOD:
You should not have delayed, for the lines of convergence are being drawn across the Earth, even now. The king is in his counting house.

They flash on a well-off black couple, most likely father and daughter

DOCTOR: I don't know who they are.

ELDER-OOD: And there is another. The most lonely of all, lost and forgotten.

The DOCTOR is shown LUCY SAXON in a cell, crying.

DOCTOR: The Master's wife.

OOD-SIGMA: We see so much, but understand little. The woman in the cage, who is she?

DOCTOR: She was... It w-wasn't her fault, she was... The Master, he's a Time Lord, like me. I can show you.

They join hands and the DOCTOR shows the Ood the MASTER when he was being Saxon.

[clips from "The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords"]

DOCTOR: (V.O.) The Master took the name of Saxon. He married a human, a woman called Lucy. And he corrupted her. She stood at his side while he conquered the Earth.

DOCTOR: I reversed everything he'd done, so it never even happened. But Lucy Saxon remembered.

[clips from "The Last of the Time Lords" of LUCY sh**ting the MASTER, the DOCTOR holding his body and then the funeral pyre.]

DOCTOR: (V.O.) I held him in my arms. I burnt his body!

DOCTOR: The Master is dead!

ELDER-OOD: And yet, you did not see...

[clip from "The Last of the Time Lords" of the DOCTOR walking away from the pyre.]

DOCTOR: What's that?

[clip from "The Last of the Time Lords" of a woman’s hand picking up the MASTER’S ring. We hear his laugh. She holds it carefully in her palm.]

DOCTOR: Part of him survived. (tries to stand) I have to go! (the OOD do not release his hands)

ELDER-OOD: But something more is happening, Doctor. The Master is part of a greater design, because a shadow is falling over creation. Something vast is stirring in the dark. (looks up, eyes red) The Ood have gained this power to see through time because time is bleeding.

The DOCTOR looks around and sees all of the OOD have red eyes.

ELDER-OOD: Shapes of things once lost are moving through the veil. And these events from years ago thr*aten to destroy this future. And the present and the past.

DOCTOR: What do you mean?

ELDER-OOD: This is what we have seen, Doctor. The darkness heralds only one thing, the end of time itself.

The DOCTOR runs from the cave and back onto the surface.

ELDER-OOD: Events that have happened are happening now.

EXT. OOD-SPHERE SURFACE, DAY

The DOCTOR runs through the snow.

INT. BROADFELL PRISON

A woman’s hand inserts a key into a cell door lock.

EXT. OOD-SPHERE SURFACE, DAY

The DOCTOR keeps running.

INT. BROADFELL PRISON

The cell door opens and we see it belongs to LUCY. The WARDER opening the door is the same woman we saw with the MASTER’S ring.

EXT. OOD-SPHERE SURFACE, DAY

The DOCTOR keeps running.

INT. BROADFELL PRISON

The WARDER nods and LUCY stands and walks to the door.

EXT. OOD-SPHERE SURFACE, DAY

The DOCTOR finally arrives at the TARDIS, unlocking it by remote.

INT. BROADFELL PRISON

LUCY is escorted through the corridors.

THE VORTEX

The TARDIS flies through the space-time vortex.

INT. TARDIS

The controls begin to spark as the DOCTOR works them furiously.

INT. BROADFELL PRISON

LUCY is escorted into a large cavernous room where a well-dressed woman greets her.

GOVERNOR: Mrs Saxon, let me introduce myself. I'm your new Governor. I'm afraid the previous Governor met with something of an accident, which took quite some time to arrange. Miss Trefusis, if you will prepare.

The warder, MISS TREFUSIS, motions to the other guards. The other women position themselves around the room. In the center is a stone pedestal on which MISS TREFUSIS reverently places a bowl.

GOVERNOR: You kept your silence well, Mrs Saxon. Your trial was held in secret, with no jury, so, no-one knows who Harold Saxon was, where he came from, why you k*lled him. Make her kneel.

One of the guards pushes LUCY down to her knees.

GOVERNOR: There are those of us who never lost faith. And, in his wisdom, Harold Saxon prepared for this moment. He knew that he might die and he made us ready.

MISS TREFUSIS steps forward.

GOVERNOR: Tonight, Mrs Saxon... he returns.

MISS TREFUSIS holds out the ring and LUCY gasps. We hear the MASTER’S laugh.

INT. NOBLE KITCHEN, NIGHT

WILF is looking out the window at the thunderstorm. The news broadcast on the TV is interrupted and the WOMAN from the church appears onscreen. WILF stills for a moment and then the WOMAN disappears and the broadcast resumes.

INT. BROADFELL PRISON

MISS TREFUSIS places the ring in the bowl.

GOVERNOR: As it was written in the Secret Books of Saxon, these are the Potions of Life.

Each of the guards pours a liquid from stone(?) vases into the bowl.

LUCY: Listen to me! Whatever he told you, you've got no idea what you're doing!

GOVERNOR: Miss Trefusis, the catalyst.

MISS TREFUSIS advances on LUCY.

LUCY: What are you doing? Leave me alone! Don't. Don't!

MISS TREFUSIS takes a tissue and forcibly wipes LUCY’S lips.

GOVERNOR: You were Saxon's wife. You bore his imprint. That's all we needed - the final biometrical signature.

MISS TREFUSIS takes the tissue and holds it above the bowl. It bears the imprint of LUCY’S lips.

LUCY: You can't bring him back, you can't!

MISS TREFUSIS drops the tissue and a spout of flame sh**t up from the bowl. It turns into a whirling storm, drawing lightning from the sky.

LUCY: (shouts) I'm begging you! Stop this now before it's too late! (stands)

GOVERNOR: We give ourselves that Saxon might live!

The whirlwind is drawing energy from the willing sacrifices. They fall to their knees.

LUCY: Can't you see?! He lied to you! His name isn't even Harold Saxon!

GOVERNOR: And this was written also. For his name is... the Master!

The MASTER manifests within the whirlwind.

MASTER: (echoing)
Never. Never. Never. Never. Never dying. Never dying! Never dying! Never dying! Never dying!

INT. TARDIS

Larger sparks blow out from the console and smoke rises. The DOCTOR ignores them and tries to make the TARDIS go faster.

INT. BROADFELL PRISON

The MASTER sees LUCY and holds his arms out.

MASTER: (echoing)
Oh, Lucy. Sweet Lucy Saxon, my ever faithful… Did the widow's kiss bring me back to life?

LUCY: You're k*lling them!

MASTER: (echoing)
Oh, let them die. They're just the first. The whole stupid stinking human disgrace can fall into the pit. (puts his hands over his ears) Can't you hear it, Lucy? The noise? The drumbeat? Louder than ever before. The drums, the never-ending drums. Oh, I have missed them!

LUCY: But no-one knew you better than I did. I knew you'd come back. And all this time, your disciples have prepared. But so have we! (turns to the guard behind her and takes a small vial)

MASTER: What are you doing?

LUCY: The Secret Books of Saxon spoke of the Potions of Life, and I was never that bright, but my family had contacts. People who were clever enough to calculate the opposite. (makes to open the vial)

MASTER: Don't you dare! I'm ordering you, Lucy. You will obey me!

LUCY: Till death do us part, Harry!

MASTER: NO-O-O-O!

LUCY throws the contents of the vial at the still-forming MASTER. The whirlwind explodes into a blue flame, encompassing the room.

INT. TARDIS

The TARDIS materializes and the DOCTOR rushes out.

EXT. BROADFELL PRISON, DAY

The prison is now in ruins. The DOCTOR stands in the street, looking around.

INT. OFFICE, DAY

Footage of the prison expl*si*n and aftermath plays on a laptop. The MAN from the OODS’ vision is watching. The door opens and his daughter walks in.

MAN: I think we might be in luck, darling. It's the footage from Broadfell Prison the night it burnt down. Take a look at this.

A blurred figures runs across the screen. The MAN rewinds the footage.

DAUGHTER: Someone survived? Do you think it's him? Oh, that would be such a Christmas present.

MAN: (laughs) You just leave it to Daddy.

They leave the office followed by two servants.

INT. GREAT ROOM, DAY

They enter into a large wood-paneled room that houses a large amount of advanced technology. At the far end is a large device which could surround a standing adult.

MAN: Ladies and gentlemen, it seems help is at hand. Christmas is cancelled. Prepare the gate.

The device at the end of the room, the Gate, is charged with power. A young FEMALE TECHNICIAN taps away at her keyboard and gives a sly look to one of her co-workers.

INT. NOBLE HOUSE, FOYER, DAY

WILF is heading for the front door wearing his antler hat.

WILF: (whistles) Just going down to the Lion! Quick little snifter. Christmas drinks. Right, ta-ra. (leaves)

EXT. NOBLE HOUSE, DAY

WILF heads to the street and makes a call on his mobile.

WILF: Paratroop One to Paratroop Two, we are mobilised, I repeat, we are mobilised. Rendezvous 1300 hours. Over and out.

WILF stands in the road as a bus turns the corner and he waves it down.

WILF: Come on! (chuckles) Wa-hey, shake a leg! Ye-hey. Oh! (does a little dance before boarding)

The bus is decked out for Christmas and the other pensioners onboard applaud.

WILF: Right, come on, let's get going. Off we go. Everybody all right? We’ve got a job to do.

INT. BUS, DAY

WILF: He's tall and thin. Wears a brown suit, maybe a blue suit. He's got a long brown coat, modern sort of hair. All sticky-uppy, right? Oh, and on page two, be on the lookout for a police box, exactly like the old ones. (shows a sketch)

WOMAN 2: I got locked inside one of them - August Bank Holiday 1962.

MAN: Were you misbehaving, Minnie?

MINNIE: I certainly was. Wa-hey!

Everyone laughs.

WILF: Yeah, all right, all right. Listen, this is important. We have got to find it. Right, so phone around, phone everybody. Sally, will you get onto the Bridge Club? Winston, you try the Old Boys. Bobby, want you to ring the skiffle band, right? Between us, we've got the city covered.

MINNIE: The Silver Cloak.

WILF: Yeah.

WINSTON: Who is he, then, this Doctor?

WILF: No, I can't tell you that, I swear. But answer me this. You’ve been having bad dreams? All of you? Dreams you can't remember? Yeah, well, that's why we need him. We need the Doctor, more than ever.

EXT. DERELICT CONSTRUCTION SITE, DAY

A WOMAN in a lunch van is serving two men.

LUNCH WOMAN:
Onions with that?

MAN: Oh, yeah, go on, pile 'em on. What about you, Ginger? Onions? (GINGER shrugs) He don't say much. Give him onions. He's down from Huddersfield.

A man in a hoodie approaches the van.

LUNCH WOMAN: Well, you look after him. And don't forget tomorrow night, the Christmas broadcast. President Obama, he's promised to end the recession. Bad times will soon be over, Ginger. (hands GINGER his food)

MAN: Well, season's greetings to you.

LUNCH WOMAN: And you. Happy Christmas.

GINGER and his mate walk off, the man in the hoodie watches them leave.

LUNCH WOMAN: Now, what can we get you, sir?

The man in the hoodie turns around. It’s the MASTER.

MASTER: Everything. (he pushes down his hood to show his now blond hair and scruffy face) I am so hungry. (laughs)

In another section of the site, GINGER and his friend are eating their burgers as they sit around a fire burning in a barrel.

MAN:
They're saying that the President's got this grand plan. He's going to save the world with some big financial scheme. Whatever it is, I bet it won't reach you and me.

The MASTER seemingly falls from the sky to land on a seat of tires and cushions. He practically inhales his burger.

MAN: Somebody's lively on his feet.

MASTER: Starving.

The two men watch the MASTER as he eats, shoving the food into his mouth.

MAN: Now, y'see, that's what you don't want to do - eat it all at once. Tempting, I know. ..But if you make it last, it can last all day.

MASTER: (licks the wrapper) Want more. Want cheese and chips and meat and gravy, and cream and beer, and pork and beef and fat, and great big chunks of hot, wet red…

MAN: Good for you, mate. Well, we'd better be going.

GINGER: You look like that bloke. Harold Saxon. The one that went mad. (laughs)

MASTER:
(laughs) Now, isn't that funny? Isn't that just the best thing of all? The master of disguise, stuck looking like the old Prime Minister. I can't hide anywhere! He can see me, he can smell me... Can't let him smell me! (violently wipes his mouth) Doctor, Doctor, Doctor, Doctor, got to stop the smell! The stink, the filthy, filthy stink!

MAN: Ginger. Come with me, right now!

The two men get up and start to walk away but stop when the MASTER speaks.

MASTER: Because it's funny! Don't you see? Look at me! I'm splitting my sides. I am hilarious! (we see a flash of the MASTER’S skull) I am the funniest thing in the whole wide world!

We see the MASTER’S skull again and the two men run away as the MASTER laughs. He stands slowly and cocks his head to the side, a smile on his face.

MAN: Save us! God help us! There’s this man!

The men arrive at the lunch van and stop, a look of horror on their faces. The WOMAN and man behind the counter are now just skeletons.

MASTER: Dinnerti-i-i-ime! (leaps into the sky like a superhero)

MAN: No!

The men scream and the last thing they see is the MASTER’S skeletal face coming at them from the sky.

EXT. NEAR SHIPYARD, DAY

The DOCTOR climbs atop a pile of dirt and looks out onto the site. He inhales deeply. In his little corner of the site, the MASTER is suddenly aware of another presence. He also inhales. With a small smile, he gets up, picks up a pipe and walks to the fire barrel. He bangs the pipe against the barrel four times. After a pause, he repeats the banging. The DOCTOR runs towards the sound. The MASTER then runs off. The DOCTOR runs through the discard girders rusting away on the ground. The MASTER runs along a large ridge of dirt. They finally spot each other. The MASTER lets out a loud roar before leaping into the air and laughing. The DOCTOR chases after him. They close the distance and the MASTER laughs, his face changing again.

DOCTOR: Please, let me help! You're burning up your own life force.

The MASTER takes off again and the DOCTOR runs after him only to be stopped by WILF.

WILF:
Oh, my gosh, Doctor, you're a sight for sore eyes.

DOCTOR: Out of my way! (climbs onto a pile of girders to look for the MASTER)

The rest of the "Silver Cloak" arrive.

WINSTON: Did we do it? Is that him?

MAN 2: Tall and thin, big brown coat.

MINNIE: The Silver Cloak. It worked. Cos Wilf phoned Netty, who phoned June, and her sister lives opposite Broadfell, and she saw the police box, and her neighbor saw this man heading east.

The DOCTOR steps down as MINNIE is peaking and looks at them.

DOCTOR: Wilfred? Have you told them who I am? You promised!

WILF: No, I just said you were a doctor, that's all. And might I say, sir, it is an honour to see you again. (salutes)

The DOCTOR returns the salute with a wry smile and two fingers to his forehead.

MINNIE:
Ooh, but you never said he was a looker! He's gorgeous, take a photo! (hands camera to MAN 2)

MAN 2: Not bad, eh?

ALL: No, very nice.

MAN 2: Me next!

MINNIE: I'm Minnie. Minnie the Menace. It's a long time since I had a photo with a handsome man. (she places herself next to the DOCTOR, her arm around his waist)

The rest of the group push their way into the photo.

WILF: Just get off him, leave him alone, will you?

MINNIE: Hush, you old misery. Come on, Doctor. Give us a smile. (reaches up to pinch his cheeks) That's it.

MAN 2:
Hold on...(camera clicks) Did it flash?

MINNIE: No, there's a blue light, try again.

MAN 2: I'm all fingers and thumbs.

DOCTOR: I'm really kind of busy, y'know?

MINNIE: Oh, it won't take a tick. Keep smiling. (he hands slides down from his waist to his bottom and she gooses him)

DOCTOR: Is that your HAND, Minnie?!(jerks away)

MINNIE: Good boy. (she pats him on the bum)

EXT. LONDON STREET, DAY

The DOCTOR and WILF step off the bus.

WILF:
Come on, then. Here we are, hurry up. Bye. You behave, bye.

WILF and the DOCTOR wave goodbye to those on the bus. MINNIE blows a kiss at the DOCTOR. WILF crosses the street towards a café.

WILF: Over here, come on.

DOCTOR: What's so special about this place? We passed 15 cafes on the way.

WILF: (entering the café) Yeah. Afternoon.

INT. CAFÉ, DAY

The DOCTOR and WILF are sitting at a table.

WILF:
Oh, we had some good times, didn't we, though? I mean, all those Atmos things and planets in the sky and me with that paint g*n. (imitates g*n) I keep seeing things, Doctor, I... This face at night.

DOCTOR: Who are you?

WILF: I'm Wilfred Mott.

DOCTOR: No, people have waited hundreds of years to find me and then you manage it in a few hours.

WILF: Well, I'm just lucky, I s'pose.

DOCTOR: No, we keep on meeting, Wilf. Over and over again, like something's still connecting us.

WILF: Yeah, but what's so important about me?

DOCTOR: Exactly. Why you? (looks around before facing WILF) I'm going to die.

WILF: Well, so am I, one day.

DOCTOR: Don't you dare.

WILF: All right, I'll try not to.

DOCTOR: But I was told. "He will knock four times." (inhales) That was the prophecy. Knock four times, and then...

WILF: But I thought when I saw you before, you said your people could change, like, your whole body.

DOCTOR: I can still die. If I'm k*lled before regeneration, then I'm dead. (leans forward, elbows on the table) Even then. Even if I change, it feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away. And I'm dead.

WILF: Hmm. (looks out window)

DOCTOR: What? (follows WILF’S gaze and sees DONNA outside) Oh…

WILF: I'm sorry. But I had to. Look, can't you make her better?

DOCTOR: Stop it.

WILF: No, but you're so clever. Can't you bring her memory back? Look, just go to her now, go on. Just run across the street. Go up and say hello.

DOCTOR: If she ever remembers me, her mind will burn, and she will die.

They hear a door close and look to see DONNA confronting a meter attendant.

DONNA: Don't you touch this car!

The DOCTOR and WILF laugh.

DOCTOR: She's not changed.

WILF: Nah. Oh, there he is... (a young man has joined DONNA carrying her shopping bags) Shawn Temple. They're engaged. Getting married in the spring.

DOCTOR: Another wedding.

WILF: Yeah.

DOCTOR: Hold on, she's not gonna be called Noble-Temple? Sounds like a tourist spot.

WILF: No, it's Temple-Noble.

DOCTOR: Right. Is she happy? Is he nice?

WILF: Yeah, he's sweet enough. He's a bit of a dreamer. Mind you, he's on minimum wage, she's earning tuppence, so all they can afford is a tiny little flat. And then sometimes I see this look on her face. Like she's so sad, but she can't remember why.

DOCTOR: She's got him.

WILF: She's making do.

DOCTOR: Aren't we all?

WILF: Yeah, how about you? Who've you got now?

DOCTOR: No-one. Travelling alone. I thought it would be better alone. (voice breaks) But I did some things that went wrong. I need...(wipes his eyes to keep from breaking down)

WILF: Oh, my word.

DOCTOR: Merry Christmas.

WILF: Yeah, and you!

DOCTOR: Look at us.

WILF: Well, don't you… Don’t you see? You know, you need her, Doctor. I mean, look, wouldn't she make you laugh again? Good old Donna? Eh?

After watching DONNA drive away, the DOCTOR nods in agreement with WILF.

INT. DERELICT WAREHOUSE, NIGHT

The MASTER looks up and sniffs. He looks over his shoulder to see the DOCTOR standing there. He turns around. The DOCTOR slowly walks towards him. The MASTER holds his hands out and electricity crackles. He sh**t a beam of energy that just misses the DOCTOR. He keeps walking. The MASTER sh**t again, to the DOCTOR’S other side. The MASTER rubs his hands together building up power. He fires from both hands, hitting the DOCTOR in the chest. The DOCTOR fights it and stays standing until the MASTER stops. The DOCTOR falls to his knees and the MASTER grabs him so they are face-to-face. He then gets up and the DOCTOR falls facedown into the dirt. The MASTER squats down in front of him.

MASTER: I had estates. Do you remember my father's land, back home? Pastures of red grass stretching far across the slopes of Mount Perdition. (sighs) We used to run across those fields all day, calling up at the sky. (sits on the ground) Look at us now.

DOCTOR: All that eloquence. But how many people have you k*lled?

MASTER: I am so hungry.

DOCTOR: Your resurrection went wrong. That energy... Your body's ripped open. Now you're k*lling yourself.

MASTER: And that’s human Christmas out there. They eat so much. All that roasting meat, cakes and red wine. Hot, fat, blood food. Pots, plates of meat and flesh and grease and juice. And baking, burnt, sticky hot skin. Hot! It's so hot!

DOCTOR: Stop it!

MASTER: Slice! Slice!

DOCTOR: Stop it!

MASTER: It’s mine! It’s mine! It’s mine! It’s mine! Eat it! Eat it! Eat it! Eat it!

DOCTOR: Stop it!

The MASTER takes a deep breath to regain control.

DOCTOR: What if I ask you for help? There's more at work tonight than you and me.

MASTER: Oh, yeah?

DOCTOR: I've been told something is returning.

MASTER: And here I am!

DOCTOR: No, it was something more.

MASTER: But it hurts. (holds his head)

DOCTOR: I was told the end of time…

MASTER: It hurts, Doctor, the noise... The noise in my head, Doctor, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four,
stronger than ever before! Can't you hear it?

DOCTOR: I'm sorry.

MASTER: Listen, listen, listen, listen! (we hear rhythmic tapping) Every minute, every second, every b*at of my hearts, there it is...calling to me. Please, listen. (crawls to the DOCTOR)

DOCTOR: I can't hear it.

MASTER: Listen.

The MASTER grabs the DOCTOR’S head in his hands before pressing their foreheads together. The DOCTOR gasps and pulls away.

DOCTOR: But that's...!

MASTER: What?

DOCTOR: I heard it. But there's no noise, there never has been, it's just your insanity, it's the... What is it? What's inside your head?

MASTER: (stands and laughs) It's real! It's real! It's REAL!

EXT. DERELICT WAREHOUSE, NIGHT

The MASTER launches himself into the sky and the DOCTOR chases after. The MASTER is standing on a large pile of dirt and rock.

MASTER: All these years, you thought I was mad. King of the wasteland. But something is calling me, Doctor, what is it? What is it? What is it?

A beam of light falls on the MASTER and the whirring blades of a helicopter can be heard. Another beam shines on the DOCTOR. Lines are thrown down and two men rappel down, tranquilizing the MASTER.

DOCTOR: (runs towards them) Don't...!

Two other soldiers fire their a*t*matic r*fles at the ground at the DOCTOR’S feet. The DOCTOR doesn’t stop but can only watch as the unconscious MASTER is lifted to the helicopter.

DOCTOR: Let him go!

One of the soldiers knocks the DOCTOR out with the butt of his g*n and the helicopter flies away, its light showing the DOCTOR sprawled unconscious in the rubble.

INT. NOBLE HOUSE, PARLOR, DAY

WILF is opening his present from DONNA. It’s a book by JOSHUA NAISMITH titled "Fight the Future". He is the man with the "Gate".

DONNA: Now then, steady on, never too early for margaritas, that's what I say. I forgot to get lemons so I used oranges instead. It's all fruit, same difference.

SYLVIA: (holding up a blouse) Oh, now that's lovely, look at that. Absolutely beautiful. "Love from Donna." Did you keep the receipt?

DONNA: Yes, I did. Come on, Gramps, you've been a right misery ever since you got up. Do you like it, then, the book?

WILF:
Joshua Naismith? I mean, what d'you get me this for?

DONNA: I dunno. I just saw it in the shop, and thought of you. It just felt like the sort of thing you should have. (seems to go into a trance)

SYLVIA: (laughs) Oh, now look at that, that's from Charlie Morton, isn't that rude?

DONNA comes over to see the card and they both laugh.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, DAY

NAISMITH: If you would, Mr Danes...

DANES walks over to a chair with the MASTER is strapped down and releases the strap covering his mouth.

MASTER: I'm starving.

NAISMITH: You've my daughter to thank for this. It's all her idea. (stands by his DAUGHTER) She heard rumours of Harold Saxon, his disciples, his return. It's the sort of thing she finds rather thrilling.

DAUGHTER: And I was right. He's back. The very man we need, and he's here. (claps) Oh, this is going to be wonderful.

The MASTER smiles.

INT. NOBLE HOUSE, PARLOR, DAY

SHAWN enters with gifts.

SHAWN:
Aye-aye. Here are the presents. I couldn't afford much, but not for long, if President Obama ends the recession tonight! C'mere! (grabs DONNA in a hug and laughs)

WILF: Whoa, whoa, whoa, keep it quiet, you lot. It's the Queen's Speech. Now come on, sit down, show respect.

SHAWN: (gives WILF his present) Merry Christmas, Mr Mott.

WILF: Thank you. (SHAWN gives him a hug and kiss) Will you behave?! Honestly. All right now. She's on, she's on. It's our sovereign.

INT. NOBLE HOUSE, KITCHEN, DAY

WILF sets himself in front of the TV while the others are still in the other room. There is some static and the pictures changes from the Palace Guards to the WOMAN from the church.

WOMAN: (onscreen)
Events are moving, Wilfred.

WILF: Eh?

WOMAN: (onscreen)
Faster than we thought.

WILF: (motions to the others) Can you see that?

DONNA: Frankly, I'd tell Her Majesty, it's time for trouser-suits.

WILF: No, no, no, no. That's not...

WOMAN: (onscreen)
Only you can see. Only you stand at the heart of coincidence.

WILF: Why? What have I done?

WOMAN: (onscreen)
You're an old soldier, sir. Only you were too late. The w*r was won and passed you by.

WILF: I did my duty.

WOMAN: (onscreen)
You never k*lled a man.

WILF: No, I didn't. No, I did not, no, but don't say that like it's shameful.

WOMAN: (onscreen)
The time will come when you must take arms.

WILF: Who are you?

WOMAN: (onscreen)
Tell the Doctor nothing of this. His life could still be saved, so long as you tell him nothing.

The broadcast returns to the Queen’s speech. WILF turns to the others and stops when he realizes they won’t believe him.

INT. NOBLE HOUSE, WILF’S BEDROOM, DAY

Once inside his room WILF closes the door before pulling a battered case out from under the bed. He opens it and then the second box inside. He picks up a cloth wrapped item and unwraps it to reveal his army revolver. As he checks to see if it’s loaded, he hears something hitting the window. He looks out and sees the DOCTOR running back to the TARDIS.

EXT. NOBLE HOUSE, DAY

WILF comes out the front door and meets the DOCTOR in the street.

DOCTOR: I lost him, I was unconscious. He's still on Earth. I can smell him, but he's too far away.

WILF: Listen, you can't park there, what if Donna sees it?

DOCTOR: You're the only one, Wilf. The only connection I can think of. You're involved. If I could work out how. Tell me, have you seen anything? I don't know. Anything strange, anything odd?

WILF: Well, there was...

DOCTOR: What? What is it? Tell me.

WILF: Well, there was... No, it's nothing.

DOCTOR: Think, think, think! Maybe something out of the blue. Connected to your life, something.

WILF: Well, Donna was a bit strange. She had a funny little moment, this morning, all because of that book.

DOCTOR: What book?

EXT. NOBLE HOUSE, BACK GARDEN, DAY

WILF comes out with the book in his hand and gives it to the DOCTOR as he leans against the house.

WILF: Here you are, his name's Joshua Naismith.

DOCTOR: That's the man. I was shown him, by the Ood.

WILF: By the what?

DOCTOR: By the Ood.

WILF: What's the Ood?

DOCTOR: They're just Ood. But it's all part of the convergence, maybe… Maybe touching Donna's subconscious. (smiles) Oh, she's still fighting for us, even now. The Doctor-Donna.

SYLVIA steps outside.

SYLVIA: Dad, what are you up to? (sees the DOCTOR) You! But... Get out of here!

DOCTOR: Merry Christmas.

SYLVIA: Merry Christmas. But she can't see you! What if she remembers?

DONNA: (inside)
Mum, where are those tweezers?

SYLVIA: Go!

DOCTOR: I'm going. (heads for the street)

WILF: Yeah, me, too. (follows the DOCTOR)

SYLVIA:
Oh, no, you don't! (follows WILF)

DONNA: (sticks her head out the door) Mum? Gramps?

EXT. NOBLE HOUSE, DAY

SYLVIA comes through the gate chasing after WILF and the DOCTOR has they head for the TARDIS.

SYLVIA: Dad, I'm warning you...

WILF: Bye, see you later.

EXT. NOBLE HOUSE, BACK GARDEN, DAY

DONNA: I’m a bit old for hide and seek. (closes the doors)

EXT. NOBLE HOUSE, DAY

SYLVIA: Stay right where you are!

DOCTOR: (unlocks the TARDIS) You can't come with me.

WILF: You're not leaving me with her.

SYLVIA: Dad!

DOCTOR: Fair enough.

The DOCTOR and WILF enter the TARDIS.

DONNA: Mum?

SYLVIA: Just you listen to me. I forbid it. Get out of there! Doctor, bring my father back, right now! (TARDIS dematerializes) Come back here! (DONNA comes out of the house) Come back here, I said. Come back!

DONNA: Are you shouting at thin air?

SYLVIA: Yes. Possibly. Yes.

INT. TARDIS

The DOCTOR rushes around the controls while WILF stands there and takes it all in.

DOCTOR: Naismith! (gives the book to WILF) If I can track him down...(notices WILF looking bemused) Ah. Right. Yes. Bigger on the inside. D'you like it?

WILF: I thought it'd be cleaner.

DOCTOR: Cleaner? I could take you back home, right now.

WILF: Listen, Doctor, if this is a time machine - that man you're chasing, why can't you just pop back to yesterday and catch him?

DOCTOR: I can't go back inside my own timeline, I have to stay relative to the Master within the causal nexus. Understand?

WILF: Not a word.

DOCTOR: Welcome aboard.(shakes WILF’S hand)

WILF: Thank you.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

NAISMITH and his DAUGHTER enter the room followed by the MASTER in a straightjacket. Two armed guard are behind him.

NAISMITH: (to FEMALE TECHNICIAN) You can demonstrate.

The FEMALE TECHNICIAN taps at her keyboard and electricity crackles through the Gate. The MASTER is intrigued.

MASTER: Ooh, that's not from Earth.

NAISMITH: And neither are you. A perfect combination, don't you think?

MALE TECHNICIAN: (clears throat) Excuse me, sir. If I could check the basement? We're getting fluctuation on the power cords.

NAISMITH: Of course.

MALE TECHNICIAN: (turns to FEMALE TECHNICIAN) Miss Addams? If you could bring the calibration statistics.

ADDAMS picks up a clipboard and follows the MALE TECHNICIAN out of the room, sparing a glance at the MASTER as she does so.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, BASEMENT, DAY

ADDAMS and the MALE TECHNICIAN make their way to what was once part of a wine cellar. It now holds banks of electronic equipment.

MALE TECHNICIAN: Who the hell is he? What if he finds out? An expert, they said. Well, what sort of expert? Who is he?

ADDAMS: I don't know. According to the records, Harold Saxon was Prime Minister of this stupid country. (rolls her neck) I'm choking in this thing! I'm sorry.

ADDAMS presses the face of her watch and her appearance changes. Her skin is green and small spikes protrude from her head.

ADDAMS: (sighs) By the saints, that's better. Oh, these people are so flat!

The MALE TECHNICIAN does the same thing.

MALE TECHNICIAN:
But what do we do? We were so close, we almost had it working.

ADDAMS: What if this visitor is some sort of genius? Well, think about it. We're hijacking this project. Maybe we can use him, too. Harold Saxon, or whatever he is, might be exactly what we need.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

NAISMITH is filling the MASTER in on the project. The straightjacket has been removed but he is chained to a collar around his neck. They are sitting at computers.

NAISMITH: The Gate was found inside a spaceship, buried at the foot of Mount Snowdon. It was moved to an institute known as Torchwood, but when Torchwood fell, let's just say, I acquired it.

MASTER: (smiles) I like you.

NAISMITH: Thank you.

MASTER: You'd taste great.

NAISMITH: (unnerved) Mr Danes? (gets up)

DANES: The visitor will be given food.

A servant enters bearing a covered tray which is revealed to hold a whole turkey. The MASTER grabs at the food with both hands and shoves it into his mouth. Soon, he is gnawing on the bones.

NAISMITH: Anyway, the device came equipped with its own power supply. A Nuclear Bolt.

To the side of the room are two clear booths side-by-side. One technician is in one booth and can’t get out until a second technician enters the other booth and locks it.

NAISMITH: One technician remains in charge of the feedback, 24 hours a day. And the power feeds through to the Gate. It encourages some sort of cellular regeneration. Miss Collins was our test subject. (a technician walks over) She carried some burns, as a result of an accident when she was a child, down her left side. If you could? (COLLINS rolls up her sleeve to show clear skin) The Gate mended her. Thank you. (COLLINS goes back to her station)

MASTER: But what do you want it for?

NAISMITH: We calculate that if this device can be fully repaired by your good self, it can restore the body, forever. Hence its given title, the Immortality Gate. Because that's what I want. Not for me, but for my daughter. I want her never to die. My gift to her. She will be immortal.

DAUGHTER: Abigail. It means "bringer of joy".

INT. NAISMITH STABLES, DAY

The TARDIS materializes

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

The MASTER sniffs the air.

MASTER: Better get to work. (starts tapping away at the keyboard)

INT. NAISMITH STABLES, DAY

WILF and the DOCTOR step out of the TARDIS

WILF:
We've moved! We've really moved!

DOCTOR: You should stay here.

WILF: Not bloody likely!

DOCTOR: And don't swear. Hold on. (uses remote on the TARDIS and it dematerializes) Just a second out of sync. Don't want the Master finding the TARDIS, that's the last thing we need.

EXT. NAISMITH MANOR, DAY

The DOCTOR and WILF make their way along the side of one of the buildings on the property. They start through an archway but hide when they see two armed guards.

WILF: That book said he's a billionaire. He's got his own private army.

DOCTOR: Down here.

The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver on a small door and he and WILF make it inside before the patrol comes back.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

The MASTER is progressing.

MALE TECHNICIAN: Miss Addams, we're getting encouraging results from the ratio-foldback. Can you confirm?

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, BASEMENT, DAY

ADDAMS checks the read-outs.

ADDAMS: The man's a miracle. All the systems are slotting back into place. The shatterthreads have harmonized and the multiple overshots have triplicated.

The DOCTOR and WILF peer around the corner.

DOCTOR: Nice Gate!

WILF: Hello.

DOCTOR: (walks into the room) Look, sorry, don't call security, or I'll tell them you're wearing a Shimmer. Cos I reckon anyone wearing a Shimmer doesn't want the Shimmer to be noticed or they wouldn’t need a Shimmer in the first place.

ADDAMS: I'm sorry, what's a Shimmer?

DOCTOR: (uses the sonic screwdriver on her) Shimmer.

WILF: Oh, my Lord. She's a cactus!

MALE TECHNICIAN: (over radio)
Miss Addams?

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

MALE TECHNICIAN: Miss Addams. (looks at NAISMITH) If you'll just excuse me. (leaves the room)

NAISMITH: Now, please don't imagine I'm a sl*ve-driver. We can resume work on Boxing Day, Mr Saxon.

DOCTOR: Then we've got a problem, ‘cos all of this is way too fast. Not just the city, I mean your ability to call me. Reaching all the way back to the 21st century. Something's accelerating your species way beyond normal.

MASTER: My name... is the Master.

The MASTER presses enter and leans back, satisfied, as the room goes dark and the Gate charges up, a field appearing in its center.

NAISMITH: Oh, excellent. Excellent! Mr Danes?

DANES: The visitor will be restrained.

MASTER: What? But I repaired it.

NAISMITH: I'm not an idiot. Don't let him anywhere near that thing.

A guard approaches the MASTER with the straightjacket. NAISMITH laughs.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, BASEMENT, DAY

The DOCTOR looks at the screens.

DOCTOR: He's got it working, but what is it?

MALE TECHNICIAN: (enters) What's working? What are you doing here?

DOCTOR: (uses the sonic on him without looking) Shimm-err! Now tell me, quickly, what's going on, the Master, Harold Saxon? Skeletor, whatever you're calling him, what's he doing up there?

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

DANES fastens the buckles on the straightjacket.

NAISMITH: Your reputation precedes you, sir. I have no doubt you've laid traps. Perhaps expl*sives, a means of escape and m*rder. But everything you've done to the Gate will be checked and double-checked before anyone stands inside.

The MASTER merely smirks.
INT. NAISMITH MANSION, BASEMENT, DAY

MALE TECHNICIAN: But I checked the readings. He's done good work. It's operational.

DOCTOR: Who are you? I met someone like you. He was brilliant, but he was little and red.

ADDAMS: No, that's a Zocci.

MALE TECHNICIAN: We're not Zocci, we're Vinvocci. Completely different.

ADDAMS: And the Gate is Vinvocci. We're a salvage team. We picked up the signal when the humans reactivated it, and as soon as it's working, we can transport it to the ship.

DOCTOR: But what does it do?

MALE TECHNICIAN: Well, it mends, it's a simple as that. It's a medical device to repair the body. It makes people better.

DOCTOR: No, there's got to be more. Every single warning says the Master's going to do something colossal. (checks the equipment)

WILF: So that thing's like a sickbed, yes?

ADDAMS: More or less.

WILF: Well, pardon me for asking, but why is it so big?

DOCTOR: Oh, good question. Why's it so big?

ADDAMS: (scoffs) It doesn't just mend one person at a time.

MALE TECHNICIAN:
That would be ridiculous.

ADDAMS: It mends whole planets.

DOCTOR: It does what?!

ADDAMS: It transmits the medical template across the entire population.

The DOCTOR runs from the room.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, CORRIDORS, DAY

The DOCTOR runs from the basement to the main floor and the lab.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

NAISMITH: But it's time for the broadcast. The President's grand initiative. You might want to see this, sir. Proof that the human race can mend its own problems. (switches on TV)

TRINITY WELLS: (on tv)
And now, anticipation is rising as we go live to Washington.

INT. WHITE HOUSE, CORRIDORS, DAY

The PRESIDENT makes his way to the press room.

TRINITY WELLS: (V.O.) Here, on Christmas Day, the President has promised an instant and radical solution to the worldwide depression. Barack Obama will lead us all into a new age of prosperity.

INT. WHITE HOUSE, PRESS ROOM, DAY

WOMAN: Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States.

The members of the press stand as the PRESIDENT enters.

PRESIDENT: I'd like to speak briefly about the state of our economy...

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

The DOCTOR runs into the room.

DOCTOR: Turn the Gate off, right now!

DANES: At arms!

The guards aim their r*fles at the DOCTOR

DOCTOR: No, no, no, no. Whatever you do, just don't let him near that device.

MASTER: Oh, like that was ever gonna happen. (removes the straightjacket with a burst of energy and leaps into the Gate with a scream) Homeless, was I? Destitute and dying? Well, look at me now.

DOCTOR: Deactivate it. All of you, turn the whole thing off!

No one moves. NAISMITH and ABIGAIL shake their heads. The MASTER laughs.

NAISMITH: He's...inside my head.

DOCTOR:
Get out of there!

The MASTER fires an energy bolt at the DOCTOR and he falls to the floor. WILF enters the room.

WILF: Doctor! Doctor, there's this face...

DOCTOR: (runs to WILF) What is it? What can you see?

WILF: Well, it's him. I can see him! I can see his face.

TRINITY WELLS: (on tv)
There's something wrong... It seems to be affecting the President.

On the TV, the PRESIDENT has his face in his hands. The MASTER laughs as the DOCTOR tries to shut down the Gate.

DOCTOR: I can't turn it off.

MASTER: That's because I locked it, idiot.

DOCTOR:
(grabs WILF) Wilfred! Get inside, get him out.

The DOCTOR gets WILF inside the booth and steps into the other himself.

DOCTOR: Just need to filter the levels.

WILF: Oh! I can see again. He's gone.

DOCTOR: Radiation shielding. Now, press the button, let me out.

WILF: You what?

DOCTOR:
I can't get out until you press the button, that button there.

WILF presses the button and the DOCTOR rushes out.

MASTER: 50 seconds and counting.

DOCTOR: To what?

MASTER: Ohhh, you're gonna love this.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, BASEMENT, DAY

The Vinvocchi are trying to stop the Gate.

MALE TECHNICIAN: He was hiding the codes. He's extrapolated the Gate's power, a million times over.

ADDAMS: But it's not affecting us.

MALE TECHNICIAN:
He's set the template to human!

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

As the DOCTOR tries to stop the Gate, inside the booth, WILF’S mobile rings. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the revolver

WILF: Hello? Oh, Gawd. (puts the g*n away and pulls out his phone) Donna?

DONNA: (over phone)
Where are you?

DONNA: It's Mum and Shawn, something's wrong with them.

SHAWN and SYLVIA are standing still.

SYLVIA: There's this face...

SHAWN shakes his head as we hear the MASTER laugh.

WILF: But wait a minute, I mean, what about you? Can't you see anything?

DONNA:
I can see them, that's bad enough.

WILF’S phone beeps and he reads the screen. It’s WINSTON.

WILF: Not now, Winston!

WINSTON:
Wilfred!

EXT. APARTMENT BLOCK

WINSTON: Those dreams - I can remember that face.

Residents of the apartments come out onto the balcony and the courtyard, all of them dazed.

YOUTH:
There's a face. In my head.

WINSTON: Wilfred. It's everyone!

DOCTOR:
What is it? Hypnotism? Mind control? You're grafting your thoughts inside them, is that it?

MASTER: Oh, that's way too easy. No, no, no, they're not gonna think like me. They're gonna BECOME me. A-a-a-and, zero!

A wave of energy starts at the Gate and spreads across the globe. The MASTER laughs.

INT. NOBLE HOUSE, PARLOR, DAY

DONNA puts her free hand to her head as she remembers the creatures she came across during her time with the DOCTOR.

INT. NAISMITH MANSION, LAB, DAY

WILF: Doctor! She's starting to remember. What is it? What have you done, you monster?
