(male narrator) Tonight on "Spenser: For Hire.."

[woman screams]

Well, I've been asked to go on a line

'and provide private security'

'that I can vouch for personally.'

Name is Spenser, private cop.

My witness is the wife of a prominent member

of the organization.

- You hired Hawk as backup? - Hawk's the best.

Somebody tried to k*ll you once, baby, they keep on trying.

[explosions]

They intended to blow me away along with the witness.

Spenser, are you alright?

I love you, Suz.

I love you too.

You ever k*ll a woman?

No.

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[siren wailing]

Okay, they're all out.

Barry, Helen, get everybody back together.

(Helen) 'Spenser.'

(male #) 'Let's go.'

'Move it back, Move it back.'

- Anybody, still up there? - No.

[coughing]

[expl*si*n]

[groans]

Over here.

Where are ya?

[grunts]

'Where are ya?'

Hey!

Over here.

Where?

First apartment.

[Spenser grunts]

Chief, we're missing a man on ladder .

'Callahan.'

I'm going in. Come on.

Anybody else in there?

No, sir.

(male #) 'Open them wide.'

(Spenser) "The foxes have holes

"and the birds of the air have nests

the son of man hath not where to lay his head."

I couldn't remember, if it was from Luke or John

but it looked like I'd just joined a very exclusive club.

It was Mathew, and reading the rest of the chapter

before I fell asleep, helped me get over the feeling I had

when I watched almost everything I own

go up in smoke.

I tried to drown the rest of my thoughts in beer

that never really works.

And the alcohol in my blood didn't make an August night

in Boston any cooler.

[alarm buzzing]

[knocking on door]

(Frank) 'Spenser.'

'Hey, Spenser.'

Can you believe this heat?

Hey, I went by your apartment, it, uh..

...got a little hot there last night too, I guess, huh?

Why don't you come on in, sergeant.

Air conditioning. This is new.

With first class clients

you gotta keep up a first class front.

Yeah, yes, really looking like the Ritz.

You know, maybe, if you're lucky, Spenser

you can get the guy who torched your apartment to come by

'and burn this place down too.'

Can I get you something to drink, Frank?

A warm tap water, maybe a splash of baking soda?

You can get yourself dressed.

Nine o'clock mass, lieutenant don't like to be late.

Mass? Frank.

So far all we've established is that you did not come by here

for a social drink, we have yet to divulge

just what the hell it is you're doing.

I got my orders, you know, Spenser.

My orders are to pick you up.

On a Sunday morning, for what?

How about I make it..

...living on a dump, that ain't zoned for residential.

How about I bounce you outta here

and charge police brutality?

I'll be in the car.

Fraidy cat.

[Frank laughs]

[church bell tolls]

Part of my work is solving mysteries

but I didn't have a clue as to what I could for Marty Quirk

on a Sunday morning that he couldn't do for himself.

You know a federal prosecutor named Farrell?

Yeah, Meghan Farrell.

Law and order freak.

Wouldn't mind being the first lady governor

of the Commonwealth.

She has just been appointed deputy chief

to an organized-crime strike force.

How nice for her.

She's got a witness that's giving secret testimony

to the grand jury, she needs a body guard for hours.

You don't have the man power?

Farrell doesn't trust the department.

She says our standards aren't high enough

and she's not gonna lose her witness

because somebody gets to a cop.

Doesn't sound like she is after your vote, Marty.

You smell smoke?

It's me.

My building b*rned down last night.

Hey, we got an extra place, you know.

You need a place, Kate won't mind--

No, no, it's okay.

Tell me about this job.

Well, I've been asked to go on a line, Spenser

and provide private security that I can vouch for personally.

And I'm the first guy you thought of, huh?

Only one.

Gee willikers, Marty, that's touching.

What's the catch?

There is a contract out on our witness.

Ah, that makes it easier.

I said, I'd never work for the department again.

And Shanley said he'd never let ya.

What'd he say, when you brought up my name?

I didn't bring it up.

No, he did.

He asked me what I thought, I said, we couldn't do any better.

Shanley wants me on it, it's gotta be a su1c1de run.

You know your job, he respects that.

Family's inside.

What do you say?

Where does it put you if I say no?

Clock starts at noon.

Twenty four hours.

I'm only working on two hours of sleep now.

I'll need some back up.

You play it how you see it.

Farrell's a young woman but she's old money.

Whatever it takes, she can afford it.

Here's her address.

Shanley will meet you there.

There will be no department contact after that.

Farrell's worried about a leak, she trusts Shanley.

Tom Shanley and I broke in together, Spenser.

He got the job that you should've got.

You don't make captain on.. you make it on merit.

I got no problems working for Tom Shanley.

Okay, okay.

I'll see ya when I can see ya.

Spenser.

Heads up.

Better heads than toes.

(male #) 'Taxi.'

[instrumental music]

Play it how you see it, he said.

As sleepy as I was, the only thing I could see

was that I might need Hawk.

So, I gave him a call and cut him in for half my action.

I figured, he might be interested

since he just bought a $, car.

- Take it for you, sir? - No, I don't think so.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chattering]

Meghan.

Here's our man.

[music continues]

Spenser.

Captain.

This is Meghan Farrell.

Mr. Spenser.

Scotch eggs.

- 'Good morning, Meghan.' - Good morning, Mrs. Ryan.

- Judge. - Hello.

You do this every Sunday?

When I'm in the city.

- Want a suggestion? - What's that?

- The sausage could be thinner. - What?

The scotch eggs, bulk sausages, fine, but it has to be thin.

Then, you really should paint it with a little more of the egg

before you roll them in breadcrumbs.

You must be a gourmet?

I like to cook.

That's funny, I've never enjoyed it.

Well, that sets some ground rules, doesn't it?

- Pardon? - For us.

What you see as comedy, I see as tragedy.

So, while I might be only hours..

...maybe you'd like to be very precise about our relationship.

Well, I'm certainly not expecting you to make

a charitable contribution, Mr. Spenser.

Although it is for an important cause.

For Marty Quirk?

I respect that.

My witness is the wife of a prominent member

of the organization.

She's given me names and figures

that can expose certain public officials

as being under the influence of the organization.

Somebody would rather see her dead

than walk into that grand jury session tomorrow.

Apparently.

You said you already have your testimony.

I have deposition.

She still has to appear before the grand jury.

I'm depending on you to protect her.

With your own life if necessary.

I value my life a great deal, Ms. Farrell.

Would $ be appropriate?

For my life? No.

One day of it, I'd say you were getting royally ripped off.

But I guess we can shake hands on it.

The witness is Angela Zemeckis.

She just checked into a building I own.

'A condominium structure next to Mass General.'

- What unit? - , on a corner.

- Can that be changed? - No, why?

Too many windows.

That's my problem.

Yours doesn't start again till tomorrow noon.

Mr. Spenser, I don't know what your ambitions are

but I'm not ashamed of my own.

This case can start a groundswell that could

carry me straight into the statehouse.

I'll make it a point to remember everyone

who helps get me there.

Just remember the sausage.

- 'So?' - She's a class act.

Didn't say anything about my smokey suit.

Maybe, she got a summer cold.

She got a cold for all seasons.

Let's get out of here before it snows.

So just, where is this babysitting job we got?

Across from Mass General, condo.

Roll down the window, huh?

Hawk, you buy a new car, the first thing you gotta do

is read the owner's manual.

You got air in this.

Makes it cool. Don't help that smell.

[instrumental music]

Mass General is the biggest hospital in Boston

and the best in the country.

It was founded in but it couldn't open

until we won the w*r of .

It was comforting to know it was right down the block.

I figured I could have a little w*r of my own going on soon.

Name is Spenser, private cop.

Going up to .

Uh, Spenser... yes, sir.

The elevator's right over there.

Stairs?

- Sir? - Got it.

[sobbing]

[knocking on door]

Just a minute.

Oh.

[knocking continues]

Just a minute.

(Spenser) 'Mrs. Zemeckis.'

Oh, my God.

Oh, my God.

My name is...Spenser.

Meghan Farrell sent me.

'Oh, my God.'

What is it?

'It's "Camille"'

Greta...Garbo just d*ed.

Robert George just got there.

What are you doing?

Closing the drapes, this place is a fish bowl.

You know his father thought..

...that she wasn't good enough for him.

[sobbing]

You know, I've seen this eight..

I've seen it nine times and still does this to me.

Maybe you shouldn't watch it.

Oh, gosh, I look such a mess.

(Angela) 'I'm sorry.'

'I just...I took a shower when I got here'

''cause it was...it was so hot.'

Bedroom and bath are both clean, no fire escape.

Who's he?

(Hawk) 'It's alright, missy.'

I don't do nothing master don't tell me to.

This is Hawk.

Don't worry, he knows his place.

- What did you say? - I said--

(Angela) 'I heard what you said'

and you should never say anything like that.

Really?

And you don't have to accept an insult like that.

You're as good as any person on this Earth.

Better.

Top two maybe.

[sniffs]

Something burning?

[laughing]

I had to get out of the suit

before it started smelling normal to me.

And I needed a couple of hours sleep

to keep my brain from turning to steel wool.

If there was going to be a hit it figured to happen at night

or when we made the delivery the next day.

But I was still a little anxious about being away

from the condo for very long.

Well..

First a fire and then a whirlwind.

Oh, Spenser.

Look, ma, both hands, both feet, got all my teeth.

[sighs] Hug.

[sniffs]

It's little like hugging Smokey the Bear.

Sorry.

Well, what do you think?

Oh, I know what I think.

I don't know about the people who might wanna hire me

are gonna think.

You're right, they'd like it better scattered all around.

Look, I appreciate it. I'm just a little strung out.

You lost everything, didn't you?

"'Tis better to have loved and lost then..

...to never have loved at all."

Whoever it was, I don't think that's what he meant

when he wrote the line.

Alfred Tennyson, first baron of the realm

and if he didn't mean it that way..

...it's because he never got to love you.

[instrumental music]

Sleepy?

Way past that.

Maybe you just need to relax.

I can't.

Maybe I could help.

We're going to have a picnic.

We could have it right here right now.

No little kids running around, no ants, no sudden rainstorms.

I gotta go to work.

- When? - Two hours.

Doing what?

Confidential.

Oh.

Well, we've got two hours.

Any way I could drag it out of you.

You can start with the tie.

[siren wailing]

Not again.

Hey, Spenser.

Come on down.

What?

That has to Chief Flynn.

His unit covered the fire last night.

He left a message on your machine.

Any other messages on there?

Uh-uh, just this one.

(Joe on recorder) 'Spenser, this is Joe Flynn.'

'Boston Fire Department.'

[indistinct chattering]

'Uh, Johnny Callahan and I..'

'He's the kid you pulled out last night.'

'Johnny and I were trying to figure out a way'

'to say thanks for doing what you did like that..'

'...and, uh, we thank maybe we found the way.'

So what do you think?

Well, I don't know what to think.

Will it work?

- Yeah it'll work. - Okay then.

Johnny, give him the keys.

Uh, chief, how do I just move in here?

Uh, it's an auxiliary house but the...funds ain't dry.

(Joe) 'It's a white elephant.'

I need some kind of permit from the city though, right?

After last night, whatever's needed I'll make happen.

Listen, uh, chief..

- Joe. - Joe.

It's almost :. Can I use your phone?

It's, uh, disconnected, there's a payphone over there.

Thanks.

It's gonna work.

Well, I'm going upstairs.

That'll be a first.

Hawk.

[instrumental music]

Are you sure you don't want some iced tea?

No thank you.

Shall I turn on the sound?

No thank you.

You can't hear anything.

I can hear what I need to hear.

So, you like the fights.

- Depends. - On?

Who's fighting.

[chuckles]

I still hadn't had any sleep.

And I knew I wouldn't get any if I left Hawk's new car

sitting in my old neighborhood.

Any calls?

No, but where'd you get that?

Friend of mine, there's another five bucks in the jar

to make sure nobody touches it, okay?

Okay.

Come and get me if there are any calls.

- We will. - Hey, dude, check that out.

[sighs] My boyfriend used to take me to fights.

What did your husband think about that?

[chuckles]

I'm not married.

So..

You wanna see something else?

No.

I don't think so.

[phone rings]

Hey.

- Yeah? - 'Visitors for Mrs. Zemeckis.'

- They got names? - 'Shanley and Farrell.'

Farrell got a first name?

(male #) 'Come on, I'm not gonna ask him that.'

'He says he owns the building.'

Tell him to wait ten minutes, lady's taking a bath.

What's going on?

Get dressed.

Well, who was that?

I said get dressed, company's coming.

Hawk?

[knock on door]

(Spenser over phone) 'Hawk?'

[g*nsh*t]

[screaming]

Hawk.

[intense music]

[tires screeching]

[siren wailing]

[indistinct chattering]

Ladies, I'm sorry. I have to get through.

I have to get through. I'm sorry.

Zip it up, Charlie, nobody gets through that door.

[indistinct chattering]

- He's yours. - I got it.

- Fourth floor, lieutenant. - What's your name, officer?

William, sir. Michael Williams.

I want makes on both John Does

before they go in the locker.

Think you can handle that, Williams?

Yes, sir.

(Spenser) 'Closer to the phone.'

- How the hell do you know? - Wild guess.

Harry, you're sure the only blood

in the room is by the door?

Not a drop any place else.

[phone rings] I got it.

Spenser.

Yeah, Herb, give it to me.

- Paul. - Lieutenant.

(Martin) 'You print him already?'

One of your boys did, lieutenant.

Had me send it on in with a cruiser.

One of my boys?

[whispering] Over here.

Okay. Thanks, Herb.

Is that something I might be interested in?

Got a make on the hitters.

Both from Jersey, Phil Masack and Sunny Cardoza.

You b*rned 'em?

- Hawk. - Hawk?

You hired Hawk as backup?

- Hawk's the best. - Where is he?

- I don't know. - What? Where's the woman?

With Hawk.

Well, how do you know that

if you don't know where Hawk is?

I know Hawk.

Look, Hawk works for these people.

What makes you think that he's not making a plan

of own right now? Cutting a deal for himself.

He wouldn't do that, he was working for me.

You were working for me, where the hell were you?

Charles Street Firehouse.

I want straight answer, Spenser.

So do I, Marty.

Two contractors from Jersey knew to come to this condominium.

They knew to ask the clerk for the right name.

'They identify themselves as Shanley and Farrell.'

And since they intended to blow me away along with the witness

I wanna know who else knew we were here.

'And I'm gonna find out.'

Hey, lieutenant, something hinky's going on around here.

The guy at the front desk at the front desk

said the two stiffs identified themselves as--

Shanley and Farrell.

How'd you get that?

Yeah, well, I guess I better go find out who they really were.

Contractors from Jersey.

What, do you got a crystal ball around here?

What else did the desk clerk give you?

That's all he had.

Look, pal, my head hurts, okay?

Now, I already told the sergeant everything I remember.

About the two men, what about the woman?

- Woman? - Did you see her leave?

It's hard to see a whole lot out here from inside a closet.

Yeah, alright, what about when she arrived?

What do you mean?

When she checked in this morning.

Do you know where she was coming from?

- No. - How she got here?

Car, limo, cab?

I-I-I...uh..

- Cab, I think. - What company?

Come on, how do I know what company?

You could see through those glass doors, right?

Yeah.

Sexy dame like that comes in

you got to take a good look, right?

Yeah.

Dynamite body.

Wrapped in a tight red dress.

Look past the body through the doors, what color's the cab?

Oh, come on. What color is the..

Blue and White.

Bay State.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) Bay State Cab Company.

I could have made the call from the condo

but I didn't think Quirk and Belson would appreciate it.

(man over phone) 'Bay State Cab, dispatch office.'

(Spenser) 'Yeah, this is Sergeant Belson, Homicide.'

'I need some information on a fare to the condo'

'across Mass General at about : this morning.'

(man over phone) 'Hey, you guys know I can't give that stuff on a phone.

(Spenser) 'I think maybe we got a bad connection here, pal.'

'I want the cabbie's name and number and I'll take yours too.'

- 'Hey, listen--' - 'I am listening.'

(Spenser on phone) 'But I'm not hearing anything.'

'Now, maybe you'd rather have a unit pick you up'

'and bring you downtown.'

'It should only take four or five hours of your time.'

- Joe Fontana. - Yeah.

Spenser, field rep, Bay State Cab.

Billy the dispatch test tells me you picked up a fare

at nine o'clock this morning.

At that bus station, dropped her off to the condos

over by Mass General.

- Yeah. - Took you minutes, Joe.

Now, that's a ten minute fare at best

that time of day what happened?

- Look, pal, I don't hustle. - I just got a job to do.

Just like you, only different, you know what I mean?

Now, I figured she had you make a stop or two, right?

Yeah.

(Spenser) 'Okay, okay, so just help me'

'get the record right, that's all.'

(Joe) 'Alright, two stops.'

'First one was a travel agency on Commonwealth'

'but she didn't get out.'

'She just had me double parked'

'so she could look in the window.'

'Hey, I told her it was her nickel.'

'I'd park all day if that's what she wanted.'

'We only sat a couple minutes though.'

(Spenser) 'You said two stops. Where else?'

- 'The Ritz.' - 'The Ritz?'

(Spencer) 'How long were you there?'

(Joe) 'Thirty five minutes maybe, forty tops.'

Taxi, taxi please.

Alright, thank you, sir.

Hey, Spenser, what did you do? Change jobs?

- Ah, it's a loner. - 'Yeah.'

Some fancy machine.

Yeah, listen, Eddie, I'm looking for a woman.

Wrong hotel, sir.

Cab driver said he dropped her here this morning.

She spent about a half an hour inside and left.

Blonde, good figure, about -.

She was wearing a red dress.

Would have been around : this morning.

Ah, you mean Mrs. Simmons.

- Simmons? - Yeah.

She was in and out of here in a cab this morning

but she's been with us about three days.

She stayed here?

Yeah, checked in Thursday, checked out today.

- Thank you. - Sure.

She checked out once she took the cab.

No, she checked out about an hour and a half ago.

Was anybody with her?

No. Is she in trouble?

Maybe not as much as me.

How did she leave?

Limo.

You know the driver?

Jackie Hurley.

Thanks, Eddie, I have two behind the penalty box for you.

Thank you, Spenser.

Jackie Hurley was from South Boston.

He spoke the truth.

And the truth he spoke to me was that he had delivered

the woman from the Ritz to the airport

and put her on a plane for San Francisco.

The woman that the doorman thought was the woman I thought

was the witness Martin Quirk thought I was guarding.

That can only mean one thing..

...there were two women.

The one that stayed at the Ritz and then got on the plane

to San Francisco and the one with Hawk right now.

I didn't know who was who

or what was what, but I was pretty sure

that the woman with Hawk

wasn't the real Angela Zemeckis.

Time to find Hawk.

[phone ringing]

- Hello - 'Suz.'

Spenser, where are you?

I can't talk now, did Hawk call?

Yes, he gave me a number. Spenser, are you alright?

Yeah, I'm fine, listen..

does anybody know you and I went to the firehouse?

Uh, just Chief Flynn and Johnny Callahan.

Okay, keep it that way, and don't go back to my office.

I'm not leaving this phone.

I love you, Suz.

I love you too

sh**t me that number.

[intense music]

Got it.

Hawk didn't say anything to Susan about being in danger

so I figured I could get through to him a little later.

It was time to find something else out now.

Now what?

I got him.

[music continues]

[music continues]

Both hands on the wheel.

One down, one to go.

Until the city of Boston booted Hawk's car.

But I couldn't do anything about that at the moment.

[intense music]

I lost him.

Peekaboo.

Two for two. Not bad.

Bad would be telling Hawk what I let happen to his car.

[instrumental music]

Boston has more PhDs per square foot

than any city in the country.

Harvard University and Cambridge

just across the Charles River.

You'd think with all that brain power around me

some of it would rub off.

But I was still stumped.

The two thugs I deposited

on Quirk's doorstep for questioning

weren't going to supply any answers.

After all, all they had to admit to

was following a guy who was lost.

I did have a fix on Hawk though.

I figured he left the condo and caught the Red Line

across the Charles.

Kendall Square is the first stop.

And it's close to a first class hotel.

It did surprise me that the number Hawk gave Susan

was the number for the hotel.

Hawk always goes first class.

[instrumental music]

I wasn't sure how to bring up

what had happened to his new car just yet.

I figured I better let that slide for now.

You sure that doorman's not jiving you?

I talked to the limo driver too, Jackie Hurley.

He's straight.

'Honey, who are you talking to?'

What is it?

You like this place, right, baby?

Yeah, it's nice.

Nicer than the Ritz?

What?

Angela...such a pretty name.

Angela.

- 'What's your real name, baby?' - 'Please.'

I thought we was going to bed, baby, now you all freshened up.

I wanna talk to Mrs. Farrell

I'm only supposed to talk to Mrs. Farrell.

What about your husband?

She doesn't have one.

You wouldn't know Meghan Farrell if you tripped over her.

You were just taking a job, right?

Yeah, is there anything wrong with working?

There's worse things a person can do.

Farrell didn't hire you.

Who did?

Somebody tried to k*ll you once, baby, they keep on trying.

- A woman. - Angela Zemeckis.

She hired a double?

She bought an insurance policy.

It already paid off.

You spend half your life with a crime boss

you'll learn not to trust anybody.

She didn't give me no name.

Mrs. Farrell was all she said.

She went to the agency and picked my picture

out of a file and she gave me a job. An honest job.

She said if I didn't screw up

'she'd give me a... a trip to the Bahamas.'

I've never been to the Bahamas.

I've never been anywhere.

It's going to be okay.

Can you handle this?

Just take care of my car as good.

It's all locked up safe and sound.

You got a plan?

Maybe, I'll be in touch after I talk with Quirk.

Ain't nothin' gonna hurt you now, Angela.

Shirley.

[chuckles]

- Huh. - Uh-huh.

Shirley, huh.

[chuckles]

Quirk didn't get anything from the two men I gave him

but he didn't have to.

The fact that they were following me while the real

Angela Zemeckis was taking off for San Francisco

gave me a pretty good idea whose payroll they were on.

And what I had to do to prove it.

You said protect her.

'I didn't know it had to be from you.'

You're out of line, Spenser.

That's why I never fit in your department, remember?

I'll have your tail for kidnapping.

I'll watch you sweat attempted m*rder.

With what for evidence?

You have a prosecutor in the room.

'Why don't I try my case on her?'

- Spenser. - It's alright.

If charges are goin' to be made, they might as well be made here.

You already have a deposition.

All the connections, names, numbers

you want the public to have.

You don't want Angela Zemeckis in that grand jury session.

And why is that?

Because if she goes in..

...the defense can tear down what you wanna build up.

(Spenser) 'You want the statehouse.'

'You want city hall.'

You run on law and order.

Point the finger at people in power, scare tactics.

Backed up with a dead woman's deposition.

You present the perfect evidence.

Evidence that people can deny but can't disprove

'because they can't cross examine.'

You get elected. You run on her coat tails.

Everybody remembers how tough you were

in going after organized crime.

Nobody remembers about an unsolved hit on a witness.

Or the death of an ex-cop

you tag as irresponsible.

So you tell Marty Quirk that somebody wants to k*ll her.

And you contract for a m*rder.

You have a vivid imagination, Mr. Spenser.

What about hard evidence?

I've got Angela Zemeckis.

Imagine her telling the people of Massachusetts

you were the only ones who knew where she was supposed to be.

That doesn't prove anything.

'I'm just taking a leaf out of Mrs. Farrell's book.'

You don't have to prove anything.

You just point your finger and bring in the press.

Oh, you might not fall.

But you both can forget about climbing any higher.

You do know how preposterous

all that would sound outside this room.

(Spenser) It doesn't have to be heard outside this room.

You said you didn't know what my ambitions are.

They're very simple.

A foot sloop off the coast of Bora Bora.

Enough cash to, uh, keep me in shorts

and sun tan oil for a year or two.

I could be sending postcards back to the first

female governor of the Commonwealth.

We don't even know you've found the woman.

I'll bring her to you.

But I won't pull the trigger.

He's gotta do that.

It's either that or I turn her over to Quirk.

To march her into that hearing tomorrow.

What about your friend?

Hawk?

He's a professional.

He'll be reasonable.

It's Marty Quirk you can't buy.

And if Marty gets hurt.

'You're gonna find out just how good'

'a department you're running.'

Marty's got a lot of friends.

It's almost :.

There's the truck.

Where's my witness?

- Climb aboard. - She's not here?

The best-laid plans of mice and men.

You said six o'clock, we've been here almost an hour.

Took me longer to get the truck than I thought.

Hawk doesn't show up until he sees you get in.

Shanley's back there, isn't he?

[instrumental music]

Cat's in the bag.

Bag's almost in the river.

[intense music]

[seagulls squawking]

That finishes me.

Just about.

Wait in the car.

Wait, I-I'm not driving the truck out.

Open the door.

(Spenser) 'I gave you what you wanted.'

Open it.

It's all over, Tom.

[dramatic music]

[tires screeching]

[grunts]

[indistinct radio chatter]

(woman on radio) 'Go ahead, Alpha - on channel seven.'

(male #) 'Have H&H send an ambulance to South end of pier one.

Got a g*nsh*t victim, possibly dead.

[sirens wailing]

[tires screeching]

[melancholic music]

[music continues]

I'll cover that as soon as I can.

Damn straight.

Might take me a little longer to come up

with what I owe you for your help.

Hope you're through working for the cops for good this time.

"Experience is the fruit of the tree of errors."

Yeah, well, one mistake's enough for this fool.

See you around.

Not for a while.

I'll be in the Bahamas.

- Spenser? - Yeah.

You were a cop, you think all crooks head is messed up bad?

Me and Shanley went back a long way.

What about you?

You ever k*ll a woman?

No.

Not a great feeling.

Hmm.

Play it by the rules, babe, that's what counts.

'This kinda work's hard enough just doin' that.'

Ain't no room at the inn for feelings.

[engine cranking]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

"Home again, home again. Jiggity jig."

Only problem was, a man's home is where his heart is.

And mine was with Susan Silverman out in Smithfield.

[chuckles]

[instrumental music]

Suz.

You got it all wrong.

If you stay here you gotta put out fires.

Well, before you can put one out

you gotta get one started.

[chuckling]

(Susan) 'Welcome home, sir knight.

(Spenser) 'Thank you, milady.

[theme music]

[music continues]
