(male narrator) Tonight on "Spenser For Hire."

(Spenser) You hired me to keep your sister in mint condition.

You left out the part about the high powered r*fle

and the assassin.

Spenser. I'm a private investigator.

I'm working for your sister.

Haven't got a sister.

International hitman?

Spies..

(Hawk) He's mine.

(Spenser) We'd all slow down with age.

Stay out of my way, Spenser.

You have company.

(Spenser) 'Diane's a client.'

We're gonna have her stay here tonight.

Some people deserve to die.

(Spenser) It's a one man army.

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[intense music]

[indistinct chatter]

Ice tea. Lots of lemon, please.

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nshots]

[upbeat music]

Alright.

Get inside. Come on.

- 'Over there.' - I got him.

[car honking]

[indistinct chatter]

[music continues]

Shh.

[indistinct singing]

[singing continues]

[door closes]

[knocks on door]

(female #) 'Help!'

'Help!'

[upbeat music]

[music continues]

[train chugging]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

(Spenser) I'm a pretty, independent guy.

In fact, I place a real premium on it.

I mean, I keep my overhead down

I own my own wardrobe and my car outright.

So when a client only gives me half the story

I tell him exactly where to stuff his business.

Him or her, that is in this case.

No matter.

I'm an equal opportunity employee.

"The Ancient Mariner woke up sadder but wiser," Diane.

But when something like this happens to me

I don't wake up sad, I wake up mad!

Wh-what is it, Mr. Spenser?--

You hired me to serve, protect

and keep your sister in mint condition.

- Right? - Right.

You said that an old boyfriend

was tryin' to get back with her.

Y-yeah, yeah, right--

That you didn't trust him, that something was

peculiar about him.

- Maybe even dangerous. - 'Yes.'

You left out the part about the high powered r*fle

and the assassin.

The what?

Busboy took the b*llet. He's dead.

Oh, no.

Oh, Mr. Spenser, there has to be some mistake.

Yeah, two mistakes.

You sold me a bill of goods and I bought 'em.

You think I lied to you?

But I didn't. Why would I do that?

'Why would I hire you'

and then deliberately go o-out of my way

to m-make your work impossible?

I don't know what's goin' on, Mr. Spenser.

First, you tell me somebody tried to k*ll my sister.

And then, you practically accuse me..

Alright, alright, alright.

...having something to do with it.

And this tears this conscience.

I'm sorry.

It's okay. Storm's over.

I am telling you the truth.

All I know, is that Donna said that..

That George Garrett hurt her.

Hurt her how?

b*at her up? Got her pregnant?

Fired from a job?

She wouldn't say.

But I was right about Mr. G-Garrett

being trouble for Donna, wasn't I?

Yes, you were right.

Who'd wanna k*ll her, if not Garrett?

Oh, I don't..

I don't know.

Do you know where she is? Have you see her?

Uh, no. No.

Please tell me, Mr. Spenser

I was right to hire you, wasn't I?

We're gonna find out, aren't we?

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) What the hell? "In for a penny, in for a palm"

my grandmother used to say.

And the lady did call me Mr. Spenser.

I sorta like that.

Did I need deference to add stature to my life?

Susan Silverman would know.

I was an hour late for our luncheon date.

Obviously Susan was devastated.

Hi there, fella, you wanna party?

It's rainin' here, so caution before enterin'.

Well, just don't get too close to my parade

because I, my love, am soaring.

Spreading sunshine.

Well, somebody's got some good news.

I could use some good news.

Ed Howard, the chairman of my department

is going to a conference in San Francisco.

And out of all of his research assistants

his chosen one to go along.

- Guess who? - You?

- Good guess. - Well, that's great.

That's terrific, that's wonderful.

It's four days and three nights--

Is this the Ed Howard, who's '"

looks like Carrie Grant, plays racquetball every afternoon?

The very one.

Same Ed Howard whose daddy

bought him a Rolls convertible last summer?

Or the one who monopolized you in the kitchen

at the Christmas party--

- I can't believe you. - ...for four hours?

Is this the guy we're talkin' about?

We're talking about, the top people in psychology

in the country are going to be at this conference.

It's of an opportunity of a lifetime for me.

I'm sure that's great.

I mean, I think it's terrific.

It's just, It's peachy keen.

You're jealous, aren't you?

Jealous? Me jealous? Why would I be jealous?

Is it annoying?

Yes, it is. Very Annoying.

Also, little endearing.

Sort of like , dating the cutest football player

in the th grade.

Well, no th grader could ever hope to handle

something like this all by himself.

Are you suggesting professional guidelines?

Oh, yeah, lot's of it.

Good, we'll start the second I get back from San Francisco.

Wait...so you're really going?

- Day after tomorrow. - You know, it's not too late.

You could, you could tell him right now that you can't go.

I love you, Spenser.

Call me after football practice.

[engine starts]

Ah, love..

I remember it well.

You lost again, Frank?

Nah, just takin' ya in.

Maybe you got some Smart Aleck answers for Lt. Quirk.

Takin' me in for what?

Somethin' about a naked nun.

That security guard must've opened the wrong door.

He got himself strangled.

Yeah, we've been by the cafe, talked to the maitre d.

Looks like you were within spittin' distance

of his next victim.

Closer.

- Maybe you were the mark. - What?

You've been a target so often, you're a menace to tourism.

My client hired me to keep an eye on her sister.

Thought maybe the sister's ex-lover wanted a rematch.

'Might get ugly? She said, "No."'

Your client's sister was the woman at the table?

- That's right. - 'Where is she now?'

Don't know.

So who was the lover?

His name is George Garrett.

The guy at the table before the sh**ting.

Hey, that's good, Frank. There's hope for you yet.

- What else you got? - That's it.

Come on, Spenser, that wouldn't fill the head of a pin.

That's the long version.

This George Garrett, who is he?

- Don't know. - I wanna talk to your client.

What's the name?

Bite your tongue, lieutenant.

Open your eyes, will ya? We got one man strangled.

One kid who stopped a b*llet before he stopped growin'.

And one missed target, which is good for at least one replay.

Marty, I can't let you talk to her

unless she wants to talk to you.

Oh, come on, will ya, Spenser?

What's with this privilege information stuff?

You're no doctor, you're no lawyer.

You're just another ex-cop

runnin' around servin' your own interest.

And you're damn lucky that a lot of people who get along

in this business better than you ever did.

And wanna look the other way every time you bent the rules.

That's good, Frank. You said that all in one breathe.

- You-- - Just a minute.

You gonna make me issue a subpoena?

Marty, I work for my client not for you.

Oh, yeah, another client headed for sainthood.

Hey, watch those rocks, Frank.

That monastery you work in is made of glass.

Your client doesn't have the slightest idea

'who was sh**ting at the sister?'

You still think I'm holdin' out on ya?

If you know anything about me

you know I don't work that way.

If you turn anything, I want it.

When I turn something, you got it.

You're some kind of angel, you know that?

What do you let him get off so easy for?

We're just public servants, Frank.

A private cop like Spenser can do a lot of digging

where us, uh, "angels fear to tread."

[machine whirring]

Spenser!

It's what you lookin' for?

(Spenser) I think this might just be it.

Thanks, Joe.

Yeah!

Woo-hoo!

Look like a proud father admiring a new baby.

Any baby of mine'd probably be this mean.

Professional piece, right?

Long range a*t*matic w*apon breaks down into handgun

that tell you somethin'.

Somebody needs to travel light

otherwise he'd have a w*apon for every occasion.

Somebody's on the move.

Maybe goin' places where it's not real easy to get a piece.

Different countries?

International hitman?

Maybe more professional than that.

This is a real sophisticated piece of...hardware.

You thinkin'?

Spies.

The guy who'd use a piece like that..

...which rock would you turn over first?

Who's gonna do the turnin'? You or me?

You got the time?

What I got is..

...a new tailor who's real expensive.

Okay, what do you say, when I'm getting paid

you get a new suit?

How about a I get paid now?

In case you ain't around to pay later.

You know somethin' I don't?

I know a couple of dudes who use this kinda piece.

They real good at killin' people.

Lots of people.

[instrumental music]

[intense music]

I shall need another g*n.

The same specifications?

- Yes. - 'I see.'

Forgive me if I seem a bit...hesitant.

But the modification

on your w*apon I sold to you

are not easy to duplicate.

I don't have the luxury of time.

I understand.

But you understand, time in my age

is not a luxury for me any longer...either.

Ten thousand dollars.

Done.

[oriental music]

(Spenser) When I first took the case

it sounded like one from my doldrums file.

But after meeting with Hawk

I knew had to start paying attention.

If my client was a spy

I hope she wasn't on our side.

Yes?

Uh, my name is Spenser, I'm a private investigator.

Be still my heart.

I'd like to talk to ya.

- I'm working for your sister. - Haven't got a sister.

Diane York, this is her apartment.

You wanna keep that foot--

Police wanna talk to Diane.

They're giving me a chance to talk to her first.

Where is she?

She's resting.

Unless you and me cover some bases.

The man this morning.

The one you passed something to.

The one your sister thought might hurt you.

Who is he? What's his story?

Why?

Ah-ah-ah.

I'll wake her.

There's a, uh..

...beer in the fridge.

All you hard-boiled guys drink beer, right?

At the ball-park.

Once we know who's playing who.

Coffee's cold too.

(Donna) 'Look, Diane, it wasn't my idea.'

(Diane) 'You don't think I invited him here, do you?'

(Donna) 'Well, he says you hired him.'

(Diane) 'Donna, I did it for you.'

(Donna) 'Oh, for me? You never did anything in your life for me.

'Wait a minute, wait a-what the-wait a minute.'

'What do you think you're-stop it.'

(Diane) 'Get out of here! Do you hear me! Get out of here!'

(Donna) 'I don't have any place to go, you know that.'

'And I do what I please.'

(Diane) 'I'll make you go.'

(Donna) 'You hired that clown to find me'

'to follow me around and tell you everything I do.'

'Didn't you!'

(Diane) 'Get out of here!'

'Get out of my life! Get out!'

[glass shatters]

'Get out of here.'

I've had it with you, Diane.

I have had it with you.

Get out.

I was here first, kiddo.

[sobbing]

This has to stop.

It has to s..

'This has to stop.'

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) I gave Diane time to pull herself together

literally and figuratively.

She was good at it.

Of course, she had had a lot of practice.

I convinced to her that spending the night with me

would be safer than a hotel.

And promised the one thing I know for certain.

The food would be better.

Diane was Donna and Donna was Diane

which meant that Diane had hired me to protect Donna

who was herself.

I got to wondering which one of them I'd bill.

Um, you have three places?

Well, you never know who's gonna be dropping in.

Uh, actually, uh, a friend of mine

is coming to spend the night.

Uh! Oh, I knew.. I knew I was imposing.

(Susan) 'Hello!'

Hello!

Why don't you light those and try to look chaste.

(Spenser) 'Hi.'

Mm-mm. Smells Italian.

Garlic and olive oil.

- I'm glad you called. - I'm glad you came.

Oh. You have company.

Yeah, uh, Diane York, this Susan Silverman.

'Diane's a client, we've got a bit of a problem and'

we're gonna have her stay here tonight.

(Diane) 'Uh, M-mr. Spenser, please'

there's a hotel, two-two blocks from here.

No, that hotel's a fire trap.

Well, actually if the two of you have some unfinished business--

- No. - I--

Could you excuse us for a second?

Oh, yes, please, excuse me.

My stomach is upset.

So what's that all about, Ms. Maturity?

Oh, just a taste of your own medicine.

Silly isn't it? And annoying?

Extremely. Okay, okay

I was a jerk and I trust you completely.

And you're glad I have the opportunity

to go to California?

I didn't say that.

Is this menage a trois gonna be an all nighter?

- Could be. - Wonderful.

It might even be a menage a quatuor.

- Bob and Carol, Ted and Alice? - No.

Me, you, Diane and Donna.

[giggles]

That's just a little too kinky for me.

'Just what's the problem here?'

Well, Diane went into the bathroom

there's every possibility that Donna might come out.

Donna?

Yeah, Donna's her sister she hired me to protect.

Except...there is no sister.

- A multiple personality? - You're asking me?

At first I thought it was some kinda act

she'd change her hair-do, she'd lower her voice

and say, "Hello, I'm Donna."

But Donna talks about Diane like she's another person.

Even after you've seen both of them?

Yeah, right.

Does either one know there's not another actual physical entity?

I think so. Does it matter?

You couldn't fill a thimble

with what I know about multiples.

Except we've gotta get her to the right shrink.

I can't take her outta here, there's two people dead already

and Donna's the target.

Look, you must know somebody who's up on this stuff.

'Somebody we can trust, somebody who'll come to the house?'

You're gonna hate this.

- I'm not gonna hate it. - Yes, you are.

I promise not to.

Ed Howard.

I hate it.

He's qualified and I trust him.

Satisfactory?

[knock on door]

Close.

This is almost as good as the one

you made for Carlos.

This has a longer range.

Reloads f-faster.

Kills neater?

A w*apon is a product of craftsmanship.

It is man...who kills his brother.

Right.

You workin' late, Sam?

The craft I practice...takes time.

You remember who you crafted this for?

My father taught me everything I know.

He believed precision was artistry.

'That g*n is masterpiece.'

That a person who is willing to pay handsomely

for that artistry

also purchase the right to anonymity.

Anonymity. Ha ha.

And precision, right?

You are a very precise man.

Spotless.

Everything, buttoned up

screwed down.

'It's not like you to leave a thing'

half done, is it?

Or..

...half open.

[alarm blaring]

[groans]

[grunting]

[grunting]

No, I will not have that...k*ll!

Stop.

[knock on door]

Open up!

(male #) 'Police! Open up!'

[grunting]

(male #) 'Open up!'

'Kick the door in! Kick it in!'

'Get the back door!'

[instrumental music]

What about Maine? Florida?

Yeah, Notre Dame, you'd like the climate better.

No, you'd miss me.

I wouldn't miss cleain' up after you.

What's this fascination you have with corpses?

Is that why you never invite me to lunch?

Busboy wasn't the sn*per's target.

That kid was clean, no dr*gs, nothing.

Well, it had to be your client.

Now are we still playin' loose lips sink ships

or are you gonna tell me his name?

Diane York, , Hancock street.

Woman, huh?

Maybe two, maybe more.

What's that supposed to mean?

Diane has a sister, Donna, lives at the same address

in the same body.

Obviously she's convinced you.

And Susan.

Schizophrenic, right?

Multiple personality.

There is a difference but don't ask me what it is.

Anyway, one of 'em passed something for an attache case

right before the sn*per let loose.

- What else? - I tracked down the w*apon.

The w*apon by the sn*per was a, uh, high powered job.

Breaks down into a handgun for close quarters.

It's a one man army.

Used buy international hitmen.

It's purely speculation, of course

but we could be talkin' about espionage here.

That piece was made by a smithy in Chinatown.

- Sam Wu? - The same.

But Sam Wu just joined his ancestors.

From the middle of all those g*ns that he made

he got himself beaten to death.

Who did it?

The suspect is only giving name, rank and serial number.

'But maybe you can tell us'

how come he was found an arm's length from the victim?

Easy. He was working for me.

Alright.

Looks like you caught it on all sides.

Ol' Sam have a revolving door to his back room?

Sneak punch, right?

Well, you know what they say

"We'd all slow down with age."

Tell you what, when I run into the guy

I'll give him your regards.

You just go play doctor with that schizo

and stay out of my way, Spenser.

He's mine.

(Spenser) It was good thing Hawk was volunteering

for my rematch with my phantom assassin.

My first responsibility was to my client..

...whoever she was.

Tell me about you and Donna when you were children.

Uh..

- I-I can't remember. - It's okay.

- It's alright. - You want one?

No, thanks.

(Spenser) 'Is he gonna take forever?'

You can't rush these things.

Ed knows what he's doing.

Mm.

(Diane) 'I-I d-do freelance photography.'

Uh-huh. And Donna, w-where does she work?

Uh, oh..

I'm sorry.

I don't-I don't think she has a job right now.

[upbeat music]

(Spenser) I didn't know where Hawk was

but I knew he'd be doing

what he said he'd be doing.

And Quirk called to tell me he was hitting

the files at the Federal Intelligence Office.

(Roger) Diane York, , Hancock street?

Keeps comin' up zip.

I thought you boys had a file on everybody.

Ms. York ain't misbehavin'. What can I tell ya?

- Thanks. - Lt. Quirk, Jack Collins.

How do you do?

Jack is our local leader, lieutenant.

And next deputy director of the agency.

As in, local boy makes good.

- Congratulations. - Watch the tube tomorrow.

He's got a press conference in the courthouse.

I'll look in on it.

Are we comin' up with anything?

I'm trying to find a profile on a woman

by the name of Diane York.

The Lieutenant was wandering if she'd have ever

'been a federal agent.'

Computer checks negative.

Okay, Roger.

Why don't you get back on that Atherton file.

I need that shipped first thing in the morning.

Right, lieutenant.

Thank you very much for your help.

Uh, I'd also like to get a check-in

on a man by the name of George Garrett.

Now, they're both long sh*ts, I know.

But it appears to be some kind of espionage involvement.

What you're after maybe classified.

Why don't you fill me in?

Oh, I don't have enough information

to occupy your time, Mr. Collins.

It's Jack. Just give me what you have.

I'll look into this personally.

Thank you.

[intense music]

[instrumental music]

Ed, can I have a word with you?

Excuse me, ma'am.

You wanna help me get some breakfast?

Yeah.

[glass clanking]

Ed, I appreciate your bedside manner, but this is not working.

We gotta take a different tech.

Oh, look I understand the urgency

of the situation, Spenser.

But, you have to understand that

the fragility of what we are dealing with in here.

This woman is in the most delicate

stages of a total personality dis--

I heard her tell you that her sister was involved

in espionage for the Feds, right?

Yes, but she doesn't know what it was.

- She has to, she did it! - No.

We're dealing with two

possibly more personalities here.

'She at least acknowledges she's got a sister.'

- 'That's something--' - It's not enough.

Look...pal.

I've heard about your leaping over tall buildings

with a single bound, but this is a little bit more complicated

than that kinda miracle.

Don't mixed with me, Ed. You don't have the tools.

Don't mixed with me, you don't have

the tools for what I'm trying to do.

We need answer from Donna, not Diane.

We're not gonna get 'em until Donna wants to come out.

Or until they're forced to come out.

Ed, look, I don't pretend to know the in's and out's

of what you're doing here, but I do know human nature.

Donna's personality is there to cope

with some kind of turmoil that Diane can't handle, right?

Most likely.

Well, Diane doesn't need help

from Donna to deal with the kid gloves you've been using.

[sighs]

I won't permit any force--

Ed look, I respect your training and your integrity

but there is a professional k*ller out there

who's been trained to respond to one command.

And If I'm to find him I need to know who gave that command.

Are you suggesting..

...that we bait her?

Not we, me.

Baiting is part of my playbook, I'm good at it.

Look, I'm not gonna hurt Diane.

But if I can make her believe that I will

Donna's gonna come to the rescue.

- You can be right. - I know I'm right.

Donna is tough. She's a fighter.

I know fighters.

There could be other files.

Her identity was changed, she was relocated.

There's no trail they can follow.

At me?

A description.

But that's changed now.

Still..

...I don't know where she is.

We know where the other negatives must be.

Burn them.

And then burn her.

Your sister doesn't need protection.

It's the world that needs protection from her.

She told me she's in trouble, Mr. Spenser.

No, she makes trouble, you know that.

- No. - She thrives on it.

- No. - Yes. She is trouble.

'She is nothing but a cheap lousy hustler'

'who doesn't care anybody but herself.'

And you, you can stop

the miss "Goody two-shoes" within yourself.

- Alright? - Stop it! Stop it.

'Oh, you like that, wouldn't you?'

'You'd like me to stop.'

'You'd like everybody to believe'

'what a caring innocent person you are.'

'But you don't care about that guy who took the b*llet'

'or the guy who got strangled.'

You and your sister, there's no difference!

You're a user.

A taker. A leech!

[eerie music]

What do you know?

About you, Donna?

'I've got the book on you.'

Right down till you selling your soul

for pieces of silver.

(Hawk) 'Senator Hastings.'

Yes.

Got a minute?

I'll catch up.

My business with you is over.

It was dirty business, senator.

But I keep you clean--

You were paid well for that.

I did you a favor.

Now, I need one.

- What is it? - Information.

What kind of information?

Classified.

Espionage?

That's for people who like being somebody else

because they're not anybody worth being.

Yeah, what are you?

- Penny-ante private eye. - Small stakes.

Yeah, but all the cards come off the top of the deck.

[laughing]

Look, if you two wanna play good Samaritan

with this waste of skin, go right ahead.

Be my guest, get her out of here.

Maybe her boyfriend's got the place staked out.

Won't bother my conscience any.

Hey, detective.

You may be through with me but I'm not through with you.

I want him alone for two minutes.

You know it all, don't you?

I know what you call patriotism.

It's just another brand of corruption.

Yeah, well put whatever label you want on it.

But it's my life.

If it stooped any lower than yours

at least it reached higher once.

Oh, really?

I lived behind the iron curtain

for eight years, Mr. Spenser.

'Five of them, undercover.'

Three of them in a prison camp

after I was betrayed by the man I loved.

The boyfriend you had lunch with

'what's he do?'

He destroys.

He turned you over to the Reds.

[sighs]

While the bed was still warm.

How'd you get back?

By being tougher than you could ever pretend to be.

'Using what I had left.'

Until there wasn't anything.

There is still enough.

There's revenge.

You mean blackmail.

Whatever you traded for that attache case

'that marked you for a b*llet.'

I was careless.

'Love can do that.'

So can hate.

What was it you gave him?

I gave him proof..

...that he betrayed his country

at the same time he was betraying me.

That he's been placed in a position

'to continue that betrayal.'

Until I stop him.

How will you stop him?

Some people deserve to die.

I must be the one who's crazy.

He won't hurt her.

You know I've read about it

but I've never seen a transformation like this.

Thank you.

Just hope he's getting what he needs.

I do too.

Susan, I can't let him continue on very much longer.

I have to take responsibility for what goes on in there.

I know.

And I know you don't approve of the man, but I love him.

And you can trust him.

If you wanna k*ll him..

...why bother with blackmail?

Because I want something..

...besides scars.

The money in the attache case?

I owe you for that. So does Diane.

Let's talk about Diane for a second.

In what way?

What happens to her if do you catch

the next b*llet with your name on it?

No one will hurt her.

Why should they?

(Spenser) 'You really don't know do you?'

(Donna) 'Know what?'

About Diane.

Well, Diane is innocent.

She's dumb, but she's innocent.

'No one can hurt her.'

Just you.

Spenser.

Okay.

Look, why don't you let me handle Garrett for you?

'Where can I find him?'

You've done about enough for today.

Besides that, I'm exhausted.

If your friend doesn't mind

I'd like to use your bed for a while.

His house, his rules.

Well?

On the right, down the hall.

Thanks. Goodnight.

Not a bad bedside manner, pal.

Keep her here.

Where are you going?

Her apartment. She's a photographer.

I've got a hunch she's got some pictures stashed

that could point us to the man who wants her dead.

You still trust him?

With my life.

And hers.

[intense music]

Courthouse.

[instrumental music]

(Spencer) The odds were, if Hawk was around

the man he wanted could be too.

Morning, sister.

[g*nsh*t]

[grunts]

[g*nsh*t]

[groans]

In case of emergency, dial .

What took you so long?

Didn't wanna spoil your fun, unless I had to.

Were you tailing him?

Waiting.

How'd you know to wait here?

Connections.

What else do you know?

Your client's real name isn't York.

She got that from the agency

when she escaped from East Germany.

You know who the "h*tler Youth Program" here was working for?

You said one suit, not two.

That's it then?

Keeping you alive ain't enough?

It'll do.

You were doing real well

until he slammed that phone upside your head.

'But I guess you're right.'

"We all slow down with age."

[giggling]

Nice piece.

I'll let you call Quirk about this.

You're so familiar with that phone.

[laughing]

[telephone ringing]

Hello?

Suz?

Spenser, she's gone.

Ed went to look for her, but he hasn't come back either.

Listen, Suz, it doesn't matter.

Where are you? I tried her apartment, um.

The phone was out of order.

Right, I noticed.

Call Marty Quirk as soon as possible

and tell him to meet me at the courthouse.

- 'Got that?' - Courthouse?

Right. Later, Suz.

[instrumental music]

This is the proudest moment of my life.

As agency chief here in Boston these last six years

I've come to know many of you

and do appreciate your talents.

It's alright, officer, he's with me.

- Where is she? - Inside somewhere.

Let's go.

The men who have preceded me in this post

have created a standard of excellence

'and dedication that I plan to honor.'

'Anyway, yet I say this modestly'

'hope to raise to new heights.'

[indistinct chatter]

What the hell are you doing here?

Donna, not like this.

He's got to die.

Then you'll die.

And Diane.

'Let the police handle it.'

Give me the g*n.

Our precious freedoms are menaced by the very byproducts

our democracy has created.

Give me the g*n.

[g*nsh*t]

Oh, Donna, no.

Get the girl.

Hold it, wait, don't hurt her.

Somebody get an ambulance, hurry.

It's a scam. Get him.

Come on, Mr. Collins.

Excuse me, sir. Get a picture of this.

- 'Who was the girl?' - You came here for a story?

(Spenser) 'I've got one for you.'

I've got proof he was a traitor.

That he betrayed his country.

(male #) 'Mr. Collins, sir.'

[indistinct chatter]

Oh, Spenser, here, let me help you.

Spenser?

I'm sorry have we, uh..

...been formally introduced?

Spenser?

Oh, you must know my brother Edmund.

However your..

...perfume does smell familiar.

You are terrible.

Well, what do you expect from a guy

who was only in the th grade.

Did I say that?

Right after you said, "California, here I come."

- Does that hurt? - Oh, don't worry about me.

While you were gone I haven't lost..

...all that much blood.

Would you stop it? They aren't even gonna admit you.

And you're not gonna stop me from going to California.

Nurse, I'm having an att*ck.

Oh, you know what, I'm not even going to try.

How's that for breakfast?

I think there's definitely hope for this patient.

I even wanna drive you to the airport.

You don't have to do that.

Yes, I do, I want to.

I-I wanna buy you some magazines

and see you off and wish you well.

And Ed too.

- Ed too? - Yes.

I wanna give Ed...kind of a goodbye message.

I want him to know that..

...if he even tries to make a move on my Suz, I'll..
