OLIVE: It's such a
nice day today!

ELINOR: Yeah, it's a perfect
day to go exploring.

these beautiful flowers!

OLIVE: [sniffs]

smell nice too.

[sniffs] Mmm... This one
smells really sweet.

ELINOR: [sniff] Mmm, and this
one smells like some nice soap.

flowers smell a little bit...

hear and touch things.

my normal tricks.

about it before.

MR. RACCOON: Why,

How can I help

ELINOR: We are out
exploring, Mr. Raccoon.

With our noses!

OLIVE: Yeah, we're trying to
figure out why we can smell.

MR. RACCOON: That is
a good question. [giggle]

Well, you came
to the right place.

I've got the best smelling
bakery in town.

Er, of course, as you know, it's
also the only bakery in town.

ELINOR: Do you know why
we can smell, Mr. Raccoon?

MR. RACCOON: Oh, your sense
of smell is very important.

Why it lets you smell yummy
foods, for one thing.

OLIVE: Is that why everything
smells so good here?

I put all kinds of yummy
and nutritious things...

in my baked goodies.

something smells good

can eat it.

check with an adult.

and I can't smell

but I definitely remember
how good these breads smell.

MR. RACCOON: Who would
like a few samples.

KIDS: Yes please!

so yummy!

OLIVE: It's delicious,

we're out exploring smells.

OLIVE: Yeah, we're

what smelling is good for and

ELINOR: So we followed
it here.

this trash here.

OLIVE: [sniff] Ooh,

trash smell so bad?

When things get old and
rotten like this trash,

they smell bad.

The smell tells you that you
probably want to stay away

from it because it
could make you sick.

and sometimes smells tell

smelling is so useful.

It can help us smell and
enjoy things like flowers...

and yummy bread.

But it can also warn us to
stay away from things...

that might be yucky.

Are you all going to
Mr. Dog's barbecue?

ELINOR: Mr. Dog
is having a BBQ?

MR. RACCOON: Yes.

He's going to be grilling
some veggies outside.

I'm sure you're welcome

ARI: I love BBQ's!

kinds of amazing beetles.

They are my
favorite insect...

smell something stinky?

OLIVE: [sniff]
Pee-ew!

It's coming from
your desk.

[sniffs]

MS. MOLE: Aha!

An old banana.

MS. MOLE: Eww!

That doesn't smell
very good.

MS. MOLE: Hey, did you know
that some stinks can be useful?

OLIVE: [gasp]

ARI: Really?
ELINOR: Hmm...

MS. MOLE: It's all right
here in this book...

about my favorite
insect: beetles!

MS. MOLE: This is a
pinacate beetle.

It walks around
right in the open.

ELINOR: Isn't the
beetle worried

that the lizard will
try to eat it?

MS. MOLE: Let's see what happens
when this lizard comes closer.

MS. MOLE: First, the beetle
stands on its head.

KIDS: Ooooh!
ARI: Wow!

MS. MOLE: Then, it sprays
stinky stuff at the lizard.

MS. MOLE: The lizard does
not like that stinky stuff.

It leaves and the
beetle is safe.

Saved by the stink!

[laugh]

MS. MOLE: See, sometimes
stinky smells are useful.

MS. MOLE: So, maybe we should
keep this old banana around?

ARI: Uh, Ms. Mole, I
don't think that banana...

will protect us
from any lizards.

MS. MOLE: Maybe it scared
them all away already!

at this bug, Mom.

It has big horns
on its head!

RANGER RABBIT: Hmm...

flower is so cool.

It has so many petals.

and they both look
like a little fan.

leaves the same shape?

CAMILLA: I thought all
leaves looked the same,

like this one, an
oval with pointy ends.

ELINOR: They're
both leaves.

Not all leaves
look the same,

I learned that with
my observations.

Each kind of plant makes
a different kind of leaf.

ELINOR: See, this leaf
came from this tree.

CAMILLA: Ohhh...

so each kind of plant makes
its own kind of leaf.

That is so...

ELINOR: Interesting?

CAMILLA: Yes!

Does that mean there's a
whole tree or plant...

with leaves that
look like this one?

Wow!

I want to see it!

ELINOR: Hmmm...

I don't see it

look for it?

CAMILLA: I think

idea there were so many

different kinds of leaves.

so small.

amazing how leaves...

can be so many
different sizes?

CAMILLA: And look, they can
be lots of different shapes.

This one is
really round...

CAMILLA: This one
is really squiggly,

and this one is
really pointy.

ELINOR: Awesome!

CAMILLA: And I thought
all leaves were green,

but they're not.

Look, we found a purple
leaf, and a yellow leaf...

and a red leaf...

ELINOR: Yeah, most
leaves are green,

but they can also be
different colors.

ELINOR: Hmmm...

but we still haven't
found the tree or plant...

that this leaf
comes from.

ELINOR: Huh?

Camilla, look.

It's the same
kind of leaf.

But...

it's yellow?

CAMILLA: Whoa...

ELINOR: Oooh! C'mon, I think
they're coming from over here.

We found it!

We found the tree where
the leaves come from.

ELINOR: Yes! Ooooh!

The leaves are starting
to turn yellow.

It must be
almost fall.

look like my favourite charm.

back to my house!

RANGER RABBIT: Wow, you
girls look amazing.

ELINOR: We went
outside to explore,

and found lots of different
kinds of leaves, Mom.

CAMILLA: Yeah, I thought all
leaves were the same.

The same size, the same
shape, the same color...

But actually there are lots of
different kinds of leaves.

ELINOR: See, there are round
leaves and big leaves...

and squiggly leaves...

CAMILLA: And
yellow leaves!

RANGER RABBIT:
That's right, kids.

Different trees and plants have
different kinds of leaves.

ELINOR: Nature is so
much fun to explore.

CAMILLA: Yes!
