ARI: Hi, Mister Rabbit.

MR. RABBIT: Sorry, kids.

Elinor can't play outside today,
she's in bed with a sore foot.

OLIVE: Oh, no!
What happened?

MR. RABBIT: Nothing
to worry about,

just a wee bunny-hopping
accident.

ARI: Can we visit her?

Maybe we can
cheer her up.

MR. RABBIT: She'll be
so glad to see you.

MR. RABBIT: Oh,
hunny bunny.

You have some
visitors.

OLIVE: Hi, Elinor.

ELINOR: Heeeey!

OLIVE: How are
you feeling?

ARI: Does your
foot hurt?

ELINOR: Yeah, a little.

I'm not a hoppy
bunny today.

ARI: Oh!
OLIVE: Oh no!

MR. RABBIT: Not to worry, kids,
Elinor will be better soon,

she just needs
to rest.

ARI: And then,
have a snack!

Snacks always make
me feel better.

OLIVE: And stories!

My Mom always reads me
stories to cheer me up.

MR. RABBIT: Yep!

And I'll be back in a jiff
to perform my official

story-reading duties.

Just let me show

ELINOR: Okay Daddy.

ARI: Hmmmm, sometimes
when I'm not feeling good...

my mom makes me soup.

MR. RABBIT: Actually, I was
planning on making Elinor

a batch of her favorite...

Backyard Soup.

OLIVE: Backyard soup?

What's Backyard Soup?

ARI: Backyard Soup is
the yummiest soup ever,

I had some with Elinor
and her parents once.

They make it with
all the veggies...

they grow in the
back yard.

OLIVE: That sounds
soooo delicious.

Can we help you make
it, Mr. Rabbit?

MR. RABBIT: [gasp] Why sure,
that would be great, kids.

You could pick the
veggies from the garden.

OLIVE: We sure could!

But which veggies

We'll need tomatoes, beans,
beets and carrots to start.

OLIVE: I know!

Can you make us a
list, Mr. Rabbit?

MR. RABBIT: Good idea Olive.

First we need round,
red tomatoes.

ARI: Then some long
skinny green beans.

I love those.

OLIVE: Also some beets.

Those are purple.

MR. RABBIT: Right!
Purple beets.

Okay, I think that's
it for now.

ARI: Uhh, Mr. Rabbit, aren't
you forgetting something...?

OLIVE: Elinor's favorite...

MR. RABBIT: [gasp]
Carrots!

[chuckle]
I almost forgot.

[sing-song]
Dah, dah dah!

So, can you two pick the
veggies from the garden...

while I go and
read to Elinor?

OLIVE: Sure thing,
Mr. Rabbit.

ARI: Let's go get
those veggies.

MR. RABBIT: Ready for a
story, hunny bunny?

ELINOR: Yes, please,
official story-book reader.

MR. RABBIT: Ah, yes.

[ahem] It was a beautiful
day for an adventure...

and our Brave Explorer.

ELINOR: Not just any
Explorer Daddy...

Explorer Elinor.

MR. RABBIT: Of course,
my mistake, Explorer Elinor.

BOTH: [giggle]

OLIVE: Okay, let's
find these veggies.

First, we need
round red tomatoes.

ARI: There they are!

They're growing on
those plants.

OLIVE: Wow!

The tomatoes are so big
the plants need...

to be held up by sticks.

OLIVE: That was easy.

Next veggie, beans.

ARI: Not just any beans,
long yummy green beans.

Beans! Beans!

Where are you beans?

OLIVE: Oh, I see them.

They're growing on the
middle of those vines.

OLIVE: We already found
two of the veggies.

We'll be done
in no time.

MR. RABBIT: Explorer Elinor was
having the best adventure ever.

First she climbed
a mountain.

ELINOR: A mountain?

Was it very high?

MR. RABBIT: The highest
mountain you've ever seen!

Then she swam down to
the bottom of the ocean.

ELINOR: An ocean?

Was it very deep?

MR. RABBIT: The deepest.

Then she swung through
the jungle on a vine.

ELINOR: Wheeeeeeee!!

That is an amazing adventure,
official storybook reader.

MR. RABBIT: Glad you like it,
Explorer Elinor.

OLIVE: Okay, we've almost
finished our list...

all we need are
beets and carrots.

Those should be easy to find
because the beets are purple

and carrots are orange.

ARI: Yep, they should
be pretty easy to spot...

in all these green leaves.

Let's see...

orange carrots..

Orange, orange,
orange, orange... Huh.

I don't see any
orange veggies.

OLIVE: Let's try the
purple beets.

Purple, purple,

Hmm... I don't see
any purple beets either.

Where are they?

BOTH: Hmm...

MR. RABBIT: ...finally Explorer
Elinor was happy to be back

in her nice comfy
bed, the end.

[snoring]

MR. RABBIT: Huh?!

ELINOR: [snoring]

MR. RABBIT: Have a good
rest, hunny bunny.

ARI: Where are the
carrots and beets?

Mr. Rabbtit said we needed
them for the soup...

so they must be around
here somewhere.

Hmmm.

OLIVE: Let's look closely
at our veggie list.

OLIVE: Wait a minute,
Ari, look at this.

The carrot isn't just the
pointy orange part,

it has these green leaves
at the end too.

Maybe we should look
for those leaves.

ARI: Good idea.

Hmm...

Look!

Over there!

C'mon, let's go!

OLIVE: This is it, Ari.

These leaves look like the
leaves in the drawing.

Green and fuzzy.

But where is the pointy
orange carrot part?

ARI: Hey Olive,
check this out!

OLIVE: Huh?

It looks like the top
of an orange carrot,

but it's buried
underground.

ARI: Should we
dig it up?

OLIVE: I don't know.

MR. RABBIT: Hey kids, Elinor's
asleep so I thought I'd come out

and give you a...
what are you looking at?

ARI: We've been trying
to find carrots,

but we haven't
found any.

We thought they would be
growing on the plant,

like tomatoes
and beans.

But now we think this
might be the carrot.

MR. RABBIT: I see.

And what makes
you think that?

OLIVE: Well, it has the
same green fuzzy leaves...

that we always see
on carrots.

ARI: And when we
looked closer,

we saw this orange part
peeking from the ground.

MR. RABBIT: Great
investigating kids.

You're right!
It is a carrot!

ARI: I knew it!

OLIVE: But why is the
carrot under the ground?

MR. RABBIT: Carrots aren't
like tomatoes and beans, Olive.

The part that we like to eat is
actually the root of the plant.

That's why it's
underground.

KIDS: That is
soo interesting.

ALL: [giggle]

ARI: But...

how do you get the carrot
out of the ground?

MR. RABBIT: You just
give the plant a pull.

Go ahead.

KIDS: [effort]
Ohhh!

ARI: Whoa!
OLIVE: [grunts]

The orange part
is the root.

That's why carrots are
called root vegetables.

OLIVE: Root vegetables.

I like those words.

ARI: So, are beets
root vegetables too?

We haven't found
those either.

MR. RABBIT: Yep.

And so are turnips,
radishes and potatoes.

We have them all ready
to dig up in the garden.

ARI: Ohhh...
Did you say dig?

I love to dig!

[♪♪♪]

OLIVE: ♪Veggies
are delicious, ♪

♪Veggies are the best.♪

ARI: ♪But did you know. ♪

♪That some
veggies grow,♪

♪ Down deeper
than the rest. ♪

BOTH: ♪Root veggies,
root veggies. ♪

♪ We all love our
root veggies. ♪

OLIVE: ♪The yummiest
part of the tomato ♪

♪ It grows out in
the sunlight. ♪

ARI: ♪But the yummiest
part of the carrot ♪

♪ Grows way down
Underground. ♪

BOTH: ♪Root veggies,
root veggies. ♪

♪ We all love our
root veggies, ♪

♪ Beets and potatoes.

♪ Carrots and turnips.

♪ Root veggies
are so yummy. ♪

♪ And they make great
soup for you and me! ♪

MR. RABBIT: How are you
feeling, honey bunny?

ELINOR: A little better.

My foot doesn't
hurt as much.

MR. RABBIT: Good.

Ready for another
adventure story?

ELINOR: Yes, please!

MR. RABBIT: You're
gonna like this one.

It's about the time Explorer
Elinor had to stay in bed

because her foot
was sore.

ELINOR: Ooooh, I know
how that feels.

MR. RABBIT: But it gets more
exciting because her two friends

Explorer Olive and Explorer Ari
decided to do something...

to make her feel better.

ELINOR: Really?

MR. RABBIT: Yep!

They went on an
Adventure in the garden

to find vegetables
to make Explorer Elinor

her favorite soup.

ELINOR: I like
this story.

MR. RABBIT: They found
almost all the veggies,

but then there were some
they could not find.

ELINOR: Oh, no, then
what happened?

MR. RABBIT: Mmm, maybe I should
let them finish the story.

[giggle]

ARI: Hi, Elinor.

We looked for beets and
carrots everywhere,

but we couldn't
find them!

OLIVE: We looked
and looked...

until finally we found
our treasure.

The veggies were buried
under the ground!

ARI: That's right.

We learned that some veggies
are actually roots,

and that's why they
grow underground.

OLIVE: So, we decided to
call our special soup....

KIDS: Underground Soup!

ELINOR: Aww, thank you,
Explorers Ari and Olive.

ELINOR: Ah, now I
really do feel better.

MR. RABBIT: [giggle]
KIDS: Yay! Awesome!

MS. MOLE: Well hello, kids!

ELINOR: Hi Ms. Mole!

We came to help you pick
veggies from your garden!

OLIVE: We are expert
veggie-pickers.

ARI: And eaters!

MS. MOLE: Wonderful!

Thanks for your help!

[humming]

Follow me.

ELINOR: Hmm?

ELINOR: Ms. Mole, why are we
going inside your house?

OLIVE: Isn't your
garden outside?

MS. MOLE: It is, but some of
my favorite veggies...

grow underground.

[giggle]
Look!

OLIVE: It's a radish!

ELINOR: Why do some veggies
grow underground, Ms. Mole?

MS. MOLE: Sometimes, the part of
the plant we eat is the root,

and that grows under
the ground.

ARI: And it's delicious!

ALL: [laugh]

MS. MOLE: There are lots of
different root vegetables.

Take a look in this book!

MS. MOLE: Onions...

radishes, garlic,
potatoes...

and rutabagas all
grow underground.

MS. MOLE: And of course...

carrots!

ELINOR: Oh! Wait a minute,
that's not a carrot.

It's purple!

MS. MOLE: Yes, it is!

Carrots grow in all
different colors!

White, orange, yellow
and red! [giggle]

ELINOR: It's a rainbow
of root veggies!

ARI: Colourful and delicious.
[giggles]

[♪♪♪]

ELINOR: Dandy Dandelions.

ELINOR: I love dandelions.

MR. RABBIT: Yep, they're
just dandy [giggle].

ELINOR: Dad, I always
see these yellow flowers

next to the white,
fluffy dandelions.

Do they always grow
together like that?

MR. RABBIT: Actually, Elinor,
they're the same plant.

ELINOR: They are?

But they look different.

MR. RABBIT: That's because
dandelion flowers...

start out yellow and
then they dry up...

and the white fluff
comes out.

That's how they
spread their seeds.

[blows]

ELINOR: Wow! Dandelions
are so interesting!

MR. RABBIT: Yes, they are!

Well, we better get going
to Deputy Mouse's house.

He said he needed help in
his garden right away.

ELINOR: Is something
wrong with his garden?

MR. RABBIT: Well, he just
came back from vacation,

and it's all overgrown.

ELINOR: Overgrown?

Are plants growing all
over his house?

DEPUTY MOUSE: [groans]

MR. RABBIT: [giggle]
I sure hope not.

[♪♪♪]

ELINOR: Hi, Ms. Llama.

MS. LLAMA: Good morniiing!

I hope you're both still
planning to come...

to my salad party at
the park later.

MR. RABBIT: We sure are!

I've already made
my famous...

DEPUTY MOUSE: [groan]
Oh, my poor vegetables.

This garden is a
complete mess!

MR. RABBIT: Hi, your
gardening crew has arrived.

ELINOR: Is everything okay with
your garden, Deputy Mouse?

DEPUTY MOUSE: No! Everything
is not okay with my garden.

Look! It's being
invaded by weeds!

ELINOR: Weeds?

I only see
dandelions.

DEPUTY MOUSE: Well, a 'weed' is
any plant that's growing

in the wrong place.

And this is my vegetable garden,
not a dandelion garden.

DEPUTY MOUSE: My poor veggies
can't grow properly

with dandelions taking
up all the space,

water and sunshine.

MR. RABBIT: How can we
help, Deputy Mouse?

DEPUTY MOUSE: By helping me pull
up all these dandelions weeds!

Then my vegetables will
have room to grow.

MR. RABBIT: Okay,
we're on it.

DEPUTY MOUSE: Great.

Thank you so much.

I'll start
over there.

Silly weeds.

I'll show 'em
who's boss...

[cackle]

ELINOR: Pull up
the dandelions?

But, Mom always says we
shouldn't pick flowers.

MR. RABBIT: That's right!

But that rule is for
flowers growing in the wild.

It's okay to pick things
in a garden,

if you have
permission.

DEPUTY MOUSE: [grunt] And you
definitely have my permission.

You really do.

MR. RABBIT: It's
called weeding.

In a garden, it's good to 'weed'
out the plants you don't need,

so that the plants you
want, can grow better.

ELINOR: Ohhh.

MR. RABBIT: Okay,
let's get started.

First, you want to loosen up
the soil around the plant...

[singy-songy]
Dah, dah dah!

MR. RABBIT: Then,
you get a good grip...

around the bottom
part, and pull up.

[effort]

ELINOR: Whoa, the
roots came up too!

MR. RABBIT: That's the idea!

And the plants we pull
out go in the bucket.

ELINOR: I can
do that.

MR. RABBIT: Great!
Because we'll have to do it...

about a hundred times.

ELINOR: Whoa!

DEPUTY MOUSE: [effort]

ELINOR: Gardening, is my thing,
it makes me want to siiing!

ELINOR: Hi, green
bean plant.

Look, now you have
more room to grow!

ELINOR: Hmm, it looks
like our bucket is full.

Deputy Mouse?

What should we do with all the
dandelions we pull up?

DEPUTY MOUSE: Come over
here, I'll show you.

DEPUTY MOUSE: They go
into my composter.

We just open it up...

dump in the weeds...
and shovel dirt on top.

ELINOR: Wha... why?

DEPUTY MOUSE: Because it helps
the dandelions to break down,

and rot.

Then it all turns
into compost.

ELINOR: I guess.

Deputy Mouse says we should
put the dandelions

so they can rot.

ELINOR: But why do weeds grow if
no-one seems to want them?

Aren't they good
for anything?

MR. RABBIT: Hmm.

I've never known a plant to
be 'not good for anything.

In nature everything
has a place.

ELINOR: Then what are
dandelions good for?

[bee buzzing]
ELINOR: [gasp]

[bee buzzing]

It's a bumblebee.

MR. RABBIT: Mm,
that's a big one.

[bee buzzing]

DEPUTY MOUSE: [grunts]

ELINOR: It's going from
dandelion to dandelion.

DEPUTY MOUSE: [effort]

[bee buzzing]

ELINOR: I wonder why
it's doing that?

DEPUTY MOUSE: The bee?

Oh, it's drinking nectar and
getting pollen from the flowers.

ELINOR: Hmm...

What's all that powdery
stuff on the bee?

DEPUTY MOUSE: That's
the flower pollen.

The bee takes that back to the
nest, along with the nectar,

for the young
bees to eat.

ELINOR: So, bees get
food from dandelions?

DEPUTY MOUSE: Yep.

Especially in the Spring,

when no other plants
have flowers, yet.

ELINOR: Cool!

ELINOR: [gasp]
A hummingbird!

DEPUTY MOUSE: Oh yes!

DEPUTY MOUSE: Oh...
Now, where did I put them?

Oh, there they are...

DEPUTY MOUSE:
My binoculars.

They help me get a closer look
when I'm bird-watching.

ELINOR: Thanks!

ELINOR: I [gasp]
There it is!

The hummingbird is taking some
fluffy seeds from the dandelion.

I wonder why?

DEPUTY MOUSE: [effort]

ELINOR: I need more
observations.

ELINOR: Oh, wow.

It's using the fluff to
make its nest.

Ooh, I bet that makes the
nest soft and warm.

MR. RABBIT: Looks
cozy, doesn't it?

ELINOR: Hmm...

So, dandelions make
food for bees,

and their seed fluff is good
for making hummingbird nests?

MR. RABBIT: That's right.

Some birds even eat
the dandelion seeds.

ELINOR: Wow.

Dandelions are good
for lots of things.

MR. RABBIT: Mmhmm,
it's like I said...

in nature, everything
has a place.

Even weeds.

DEPUTY MOUSE:
That's true...

[grunt]

DEPUTY MOUSE: ...but that
place does not have to be...

in my veggie garden!

[pull effort]
[grunt]

MS. LLAMA: Ohh!
Deputy Mouse?

MS. LLAMA: Oh, hello
again, Mr. Rabbit!

DEPUTY MOUSE: I wish.

It's mostly dandelions.

MS. LLAMA: Oh, I see.

ELINOR: What's the matter,
Ms. Llama?

MS. LLAMA: Well, I went to
Farmer Bear's to get spinach

for my Spinach Surprise salad.

But she's all out
of spinach!

MS. LLAMA: And now I don't know
what to bring to my own party!

How can I make a salad,
with no leafy greens?

ELINOR: Hmm...

[gasp] Dad, are
dandelions safe to eat?

MR. RABBIT: Good question!

Lots of plants and flowers
are not safe to eat,

so you should always ask an
adult before you eat anything

in a garden.

MR. RABBIT: But as a
matter of fact,

dandelion leaves
are safe to eat.

MS. LLAMA: Oh, and
they're not just safe...

they're delicious
in a salad.

ELINOR: Ms. Llama, why don't
you use dandelion leaves...

to make your salad?

There's lots of
dandelions here.

MR. RABBIT: Ohhh!
That's a great idea, Elinor.

MS. LLAMA: Oh!
It certainly is!

But are you sure Deputy Mouse
has enough dandelions to spare?

DEPUTY MOUSE: [grunt]
[oooof]

Oh, I'd be thrilled!

Take 'em, please!

Take 'em all!

ALL: [giggle]

ELINOR: Here you go.

MS. LLAMA: Wooo-hoo!

ELINOR: Awesome!

ELINOR: [giggle] That's just
what I was thinking.

ELINOR: Hmmm...
Ms. Llama?

What's going to happen to all
the dandelion flowers

and stems over there.

MS. LLAMA: We can
compost them eventually,

but first...

Come here, ha!

Come here, ha!

MS. LLAMA: I used to do this all
the time when I was a cria,

that's a baby llama.

MS. LLAMA: You tie
the stems together,

like so...

MR. RABBIT: Well, that looks...
