We live in a big, beautiful world.

I'm Leo.

I'm Andy.

And I'm Carmen.

Our parents work in a circus

that travels all around the world,

and we travel with them.

So, we never know where in the world we'll end up next.

(train horn blaring)

But wherever we go,

we know that Luna the moon will be there with us.

What are you doing up here on top of your trailer

so early in the morning?

Andy: I'm so excited about where the Circo is today.

I looked out the window and saw so many wonderful things.

It gave me big ideas for paintings.

It's an amazing city!

Where are we, Carmen?

Let's let Magic Globe tell us about it.

Where are we, Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: Well, Carmen, as you know,

we are in Mexico City, in the country of Mexico.

A city so beautiful,

artists have been painting pictures of it for many years.

Just like you Andy!

Mexico City is one of the biggest cities in the world.

They speak Spanish here,

and when something is big, they call it grande.

All: Grande!

Thank you, Magic Globe.

The fact that Mexico is so grande

must be why I have such grande ideas for paintings.

I must... paint...

All: Grande!

Andy: (laughs)

But before I can paint big,

I must find something grande to paint on.

Huh?

(angels vocalizing)

Must paint grande!

Andy: Must paint, must paint. Lucie: No, Andy, stop!

You can't just paint on walls whenever you want to,

especially Senor Fabuloso's wall.

But it's so grande, so empty.

It's practically begging to be painted on.

Wall: Please... oh please, paint on me...!

Paint on me.

(blink)

I'm sorry, Andy, but you can't just paint on anything.

You have to get permission first.

Leo: Whoa, I can't believe you almost painted

on Senor Fabuloso's wall.

Yeah, must paint.

Maybe if you can't find something grande

to paint on right now,

we should take a break from painting for a little bit.

That's a good idea, Andy.

Maybe you and your friends could take a walk into the city.

I really wanna paint.

I wanna paint on something grande!

We decided to go for a walk around Mexico City,

because Andy is a bit excited today.

I just really wanna paint on something big.

That's all.

I think I know just the person we should see.

This way, come with me.

(soft instrumental music)

Andy, Carmen, Leo, this is my friend Diego.

He's painting on that big wall!

Andy: No, stop, Mr. Diego!

My mother said you weren't supposed

to paint on walls without permission.

Ah, amigo, but I do have permission.

That's what I do.

It's-- my job.

Diego is right.

He's allowed, because he's painting a mural.

Oh-- a mural.

I don't know what a mural is.

A mural is a painting on a wall

you have permission to paint on.

But there's a lot more to it than just getting permission.

To paint on a big grande wall,

you have to have-- a big grande idea.

For instance, I'm creating a mural

of the whole community.

What's a community, Senor Diego?

A community is the place where a group

of people live and work in the same area.

For instance, you see here,

I've started painting Juan

providing Paletas de Hielo

for all the neighborhood children.

Paletas de Hielo are delicious

Mexican frozen fruit treats.

Like what we were eating today!

Diego: Yes.

I paint murals on walls to show all of the wonderful things

that happen in my community.

My grande community gives me grande ideas.

In fact, my mural is so grande

that I still have much work to do on it.

I sure could use some help.

It looks like there's a party going on today,

or some holiday.

I love this fun skeleton mask.

And I love these yummy sugar skeleton skulls.

What holiday is this?

(soft guitar strumming)

Leo: Hi, Carmen! Carmen: Ah!

Whoops, sorry Carmen!

I didn't mean to scare you with my skeleton mask.

Me, scared?

No, I was just startled, that's all.

Skeletons are great.

I love skeletons. (chuckles)

Leo: Would you like to wear it?

(chuckles) No, thank you.

Carmen, we love all the fun skeleton decorations in town.

It looks like some sort of holiday today,

but we don't know what it is or where we are.

We are in my hometown of Mexico City.

And today is what's called the Day of the Dead.

The Day of the-- (gulps) Dead?

I'll let the Magic Globe explain more.

Magic Globe: Thanks, Carmen.

Yes, we are in Mexico City,

which is located in the country of Mexico.

Right now, many people in Mexico

are celebrating a holiday

called "El Dia de Los Muertos",

which is the Spanish name for the Day of the Dead.

Cool.

Magic Globe: Here in Mexico City,

the Day of the Dead celebration

includes people coming together

with costumes, treats, and skeleton masks

in places like Zocalo Square.

Skeletons, costumes, and treats?

The Day of the Dead sounds a lot like Halloween.

And I love Halloween!

The two holidays have some things in common,

but Day of the Dead is not the same as Halloween.

Even if there are a lot of skeletons.

Magic Globe: That's right, Carmen.

The most important thing

about the Day of the Dead is family.

Many families in Mexico build altars

to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have d*ed.

It's a great way to remember the person who has d*ed.

I had a goldfish die once.

His name was Mr. Splashy.

When he d*ed, we didn't do anything like that.

Even though it seems like a big party,

it's a very important day for Mexicans like me.

Tonight, my family is gathering at my Aunt Ceci's house,

and I'm going to play a special song

at my Abuela's altar.

Both: Abuela?

Abuela means grand- mother in Spanish,

which is the language we speak here in Mexico.

My Abuela d*ed when I was little,

but I have this picture of her.

Wow Carmen,

your Abuela played guitar too?

Yup! When my Abuela d*ed,

she left her guitar to me.

So, the guitar I play today

is the same one in this picture.

Carmen: That's why I want to celebrate her life

with a beautiful song

as long as I don't let my fear

of skeletons keep me from getting to her altar.

Ceci: Carmen, is that you?

Aunt Ceci!

On the Day of the Dead,

we laugh at things that would normally scare us

and make it fun.

Doing something that means a lot to you

in spite of being scared is what makes you brave,

like going through all the skeletons

to play at your Abuela's altar.

what a wonderful holiday the Day of the Dead is.

It's a time where you can show love

for your friends and family who have d*ed,

like my Abuela.

You know, even though I come from Mexico City,

to learn about it.
