and it was horrifying!

Carmen: Bridge?

Leo: Yes, this used to be a model of the Golden Gate Bridge

that I made for the mayor's party tonight.

But that shaking destroyed it!

Wolfgang: Well, the important thing is that everyone's safe.

Good thing that earthquake was just a small one!

Kids: Earthquake?

Wolfgang: That's right. They sometimes have

earthquakes here where we are today.

Andy: Where exactly are we?

Magic Globe: Hi, everyone!

Today we're in the city of San Francisco,

located in the state of California,

in the country of the United States.

Whoo! I'm glad you're all okay

after that earthquake.

Carmen: Magic Globe, what exactly is an earthquake?

Magic Globe: Well, there are lots of scientific explanations,

but basically our Earth is still forming.

It sleeps for a bit, then wakes up and stretches.

This makes things shake, rattle, and roll.

[bop]

Andy: Wow. I thought the Earth stopped forming a long time ago!

Magic Globe: Oh, nope! It still moves around

in some places, not everywhere.

There are precautions you can take, but sometimes

you just have to go along for the ride.

Andy: That's kinda cool!

Leo: I don't think it's cool.

It knocks things over!

Isn't that dangerous, Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: Most earthquakes are small and harmless.

But every once in a while, there's a big one.

Way back in ,

an earthquake caused buildings to fall down

and lots of other damage.

Right here in the city of San Francisco.

Leo: Aaaagh, that sounds scary.

Magic Globe: Yes, but when a bigger earthquake happens,

you just make sure everyone is okay and then rebuild.

Leo: Rebuild?

Magic Globe: Yes, the people of San Francisco

were good at bouncing back and still are.

After the quake,

they rebuilt the city even better than before!

And that's the San Francisco you're in today!

Leo: I don't know about this place,

I like my ground to stay still.

Plus, look what it did to my chocolate bridge!

Wolfgang: Don't worry, son, the earthquake is over.

How can I rebuild if the ground won't stay still?

It'll just collapse again!

It doesn't look like it caused any damage though.

Leo: Only a chocolate bridge that took me two days to build!

Luna: Chocolate bridge?

Leo: Yeah, but now I just wanna get

to some ground that doesn't shake!

Earthquakes freak me out!

Luna: Hmm. Yeah, I understand.

You know, maybe if you knew more about earthquakes,

you'd feel better about them.

I have a seismologist friend who could help you out.

Andy: What's a seis...meeeee...ol...

Luna: Seismologist.

A person who studies earthquakes,

an earthquake expert.

Come on, he always eats lunch in Union Square.

Shaky: A-shakin', shakin' shakin' [slurps]

Luna: Still drinking that same strawberry shake, Shaky?

Shaky: Hi, Luna! I'm still shakin',

but I've actually switched to strawberry smoothies.

Luna: [chuckles] Glad you're making healthy choices, Shaky.

I'd like you to meet my friends Carmen, Andy, and Leo.

Kids: Hi, Mr. Shaky!

Shaky: Hi, kids! Did you feel that

earthquake this morning?

Kids: Yes.

Shaky: Wasn't it fantastic?

There was a whole lotta shakin' goin' on!

Kids: Yup.

Leo: Actually, Mr. Shaky,

I don't like a whole lotta shaking going on.

Luna: Leo here had kind of a

rough morning with the earthquake.

We thought maybe you could help him out.

Shaky: I get it, little dude.

I know exactly what you're goin' through.

I used to be afraid of earthquakes myself.

Leo: Really? Shaky: Sure!

But livin' in California helped me become friends with 'em.

Now I study earthquakes for a livin'.

C'mon. Let's wiggle over to my office

and I'll show you some cool earthquake-y stuff.

Luna: Thanks, Shaky! Andy: All right!

Shaky: --earthquakes also serve as a reminder,

that the Earth is alive,

always formin' and shiftin'.

It's not some dead rock.

Leo: So, the Earth is...alive?

Shaky: Of course. That's why it moves.

Volcanoes, earthquakes, weather--

rock n' roll, man.

It's always a-changin'.

Ahhhhhh...

Andy: So exciting!

Leo: And serious.

Shaky: It is exciting!

And yes, also serious.

Most Earthquakes are manageable,

but you might want to get under a table

for the bigger ones.

I like to be prepared, so I've got bag

full of safety gear.

Leo: Why would anyone choose to live somewhere

that has earthquakes?

♪ Temperatures change, the ground shakes and it moves ♪

♪ A volcano blows

And if something unexpected happens...

we make sure everyone's okay,

and then we rebuild. [slurps]

Leo: I'm still confused about this whole rebuilding thing.

Why? Whatever you rebuild

will just fall down again next time.

Shaky: Actually, there are new ways of rebuildin'

that keep things from fallin' down next time.

I test different building techniques

to see how they'd hold up when things get a-shakin'.

We've made a lot of improvements over the years.

Leo: Andy! Carmen! Will you help me rebuild my chocolate bridge

Wolfgang: Looks like your chocolate bridge

is a big hit with the mayor!

Not only did you rebuild the Golden Gate Bridge,

you added the whole city!

Leo: Thanks, Papa, it did turn out pretty cool,

but I couldn't have done it without Carmen and Andy's help.

[rattling, rumbling]Andy: What's that? Another quake?

Leo: No, I think I know what it is.

[splat]

Luna?

Luna: [snoring] Whu-huh!?

Oh, hey, Leo!

Leo: Thanks for showing me all about earthquakes today

and helping me get back up on my feet.

Luna: No problem! You know, sometimes in life,

things change and we have setbacks.

But whether you fall down or just feel down,

you just gotta pick yourself up again.

Leo: Yeah, I get what you mean.

"Love and harmony," by Love and Harmony.

But those two have no appreciation for good music.

Andy: Good music?! Pfffft.

Luna: I actually love this record.

I used to have all of Love and Harmony's albums.

Carmen: Really, Luna?

Luna: Oh, sure!

[sigh] I remember those days...

Love and Harmony really were about love and harmony.

They believed their music could help everyone

get along and love each other.

In fact, where we are today

was home to a huge Peace and Love movement

in the late 's, right, Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: That's right, Moon Glow...

Today we are in San Francisco, California,

in the country of the United States of America!

In the 's,

the younger generation really led the way

to promote peace and love.

And in the forefront of that movement was,

you guessed it, San Francisco!

Or more specifically,

the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.

Haight-Ashbury gave rise to what

people called "hippie culture",

which led to groundbreaking changes in art,

clothing, hairstyles, and even music!

With the wave of love and peace

came groups like Love and Harmony,

who wrote the big hit song "Love and Harmony"

to help people find love and peace in their lives.

But suddenly, something changed,

and Love and Harmony stopped performing and recording music.

But fortunately we still have their records from the 's!

Stay groovy, my brothers and sisters,

stop performing and writing songs?

Carmen: Be careful, Luna. [knock-knock]

[clank] Love: Go away!

Luna: Uh...Love?

Love: Luna, is that you?

Luna: Yes, Love, it's me.

Love: Oh, Luna! [grunts]

It's so good to see you!

Luna: Uh, good to see you too, Love!

Love: Luna, I'm so embarrassed

to have you see our house broken down

and the flowers in our hair wilted.

Carmen: "Our"? You mean Harmony is here too?

Luna: This is Carmen.

She's a big fan of yours.

Love: Yeah, Harmony is here.

[Harmony grunts] Harmony!!!!

Harmony: Whaattt??? Love: Someone's here to see you!

Luna: Um...hi, Harmony! It's Luna!

Carmen: And I'm Carmen, Miss Harmony.

And, well, we came to find you,

because we could really use some

love and harmony right now.

Harmony: Well you came to the wrong place!

There's no love or harmony here!

And my name isn't even Harmony anymore!

Carmen: Huh?! Are you sure

they are the right Love and Harmony?

Love: We don't know what happened to it either.

The more we saw of the world,

the less we believed in the songs we were singing.

Carmen: Love, that is so sad.

You know, maybe if you two sang

your Love and Harmony song again,

it might bring you back together.

Love: Yeah, that's not gonna happen.

Miss Crabbypants hasn't sung with me in decades.

Carmen: Well, I think we should try!
