Hey, Reed, who's
tailoring your uniforms?

They look great.

Yeah, I had an accident.

I was chasing some kid through
every backyard in the Valley.

Don't tell me you're
doing double tour tonight.

Yeah, Mac's got some big
assignment he wants us to handle.

Hey, you know, there's a beauty
pageant going on in West L.A.

Maybe he's got you
down for security.

Don't tell that to
my partner, all right?

Snider, do me a favor.

Can I borrow your
jacket for tonight?

Yeah. Sure.

Did you talk to Mac?

Uh-huh.

Which is it, the B wagon
or the beauty pageant?

You know that lady we ticketed
right after you tore your uniform?

Yeah, Mrs. Dixon.
What about her?

Mac wants us to ride her around.

She wants a tour
of the division.

What is she, a
reporter or something?

No, no. She's the new
lady police commissioner.

Oh, yeah. I read about
her in the newspaper.

Gee, that's too bad you
hung that ticket on her.

Bet she's sore, isn't she?

She keeps asking about you.

She wants to know
the name of the officer

with the torn uniform.

You squared it
with her, didn't you?

You told her I was
in a foot pursuit, right?

No, I just told her you
were the kind of a guy

that didn't really care about
your personal appearance.

Thanks, pal.

Our passenger's waiting.

Commissioner Dixon, this
is my partner, Officer Reed.

- How do you do?
- Fine, ma'am.

You must have been
in quite a scuffle, officer.

Your partner told me you
were chasing a suspect.

Yes, ma'am, but I lost him.

Well, let's roll.

Thank you.

One-Adam-12, night watch clear.

One-Adam-12, clear.

Would you please fasten
your seat belt, Mrs. Dixon?

Thank you.

Do you have a cold,
officer? Are you all right?

Oh, no, ma'am, I'm fine.

You know, you really did
make an illegal right turn.

And I have the
ticket to prove it.

What would you like to see?

Let's just do whatever
you normally do.

I want to ride around in the
car to get the feel of the work.

Maybe it'll help me to be a
more effective commissioner.

I've got a lot to learn since
the mayor appointed me.

Why don't we just take
a tour of the division,

and hit a couple
of the trouble spots.

Trouble spots?

Yes, ma'am. We have
some bars in the area

where narcotics users
are known to hang out.

We can usually count on quite
a few burglaries in the vicinity.

We like to kind
of stay close by.

How can you hear your calls
with the radio turned so low?

It takes time, but
you get used to it.

After a while, you hear
it without listening for it.

You kind of get a feel what's
going on in the division that way.

For instance, Adam-34 is
out on a burglary investigation.

Adam-26 just went code seven.

That's dinnertime, right?

Yes, ma'am.

Adam-45 just got
a family dispute call.

You kind of keep
one ear tuned to it,

and it doesn't have
to really be loud.

You'll get the hang of it
before the night's over.

Didn't we just get one then?

No, ma'am, that was
Adam-22. We're Adam-12.

Do you want to park

Might scare some of
the customers away.

I got the squirrel penned up
back there in the laundry room.

That's Jean Wagner.

Her husband is Joe Don Wagner,
the ex-middleweight fighter.

They run this place.

Who's the broad?

I'm with them.

Cop, huh?

Well, why else would
you be with them?

Wait till you see this dude.

His name's Fred Tiller.

Hangs around here most of
the time sucking up muscatel.

He's old enough to know better.

All of a sudden, tonight, he
decides he's Mr. Clean or something.

Starts peeling off his clothes.

Cleared the joint

Ah! Here we are.

Okay, boys, here he is.

I have a perfect body.

But then, I should.

Tiller, will you button

Why don't you get
your clothes, Mr. Tiller?

We got a nice, warm place
for you to spend the night.

I live on Mount Olympus.

Not tonight, you don't.

Where are his clothes?

I am clothed in my toga.

That's all we wear in Valhalla.

They're in the laundry room.

Come on, let's go.

Now be careful.

There's a lot of benefits
to having a police car

out in front.

Keeps unsavory elements away.

I never thought of it like that.

I'm sure you
haven't, but it's a fact

that in the high-crime area, the
mere presence of a black and white

keeps a bar like yours
from being robbed.

Yeah. Yeah, I
suppose you're right.

Thanks for coming, fellas.

The next time you
come, park right out front.

Okay?

Just a second. We're going to
have to put these cuffs on you.

As you know, there are five
of us on the police commission.

None of us has any real
power without the other four.

We meet once a week
to discuss everything

from administrative problems to
what the new field jackets will look like.

All that for ten bucks a week.

And most of that ten
goes for buying lunches.

Speaking of which,
have you eaten?

As a matter of fact, we haven't.

Then how about seven?

Fine. We'll buy.

Thank you, Officer Reed.

You're welcome, ma'am.

Did you see that,
Officer Malloy?

He turned right against the red.

Yes, ma'am. He came
to a complete stop.

Hey.

That man talking

He's the one who
knifed that man. I saw it.

What's your name, son?

John Hagen.

Just who the hell are you, mama?

Okay, buddy, don't push it.

I was just asking
her who she was.

Anything wrong with that?

Never mind who she is.

Well.

Looky here.

We got us a real
live Aunt Jemima

with a five-star
general's badge.

Don't you back me
against the wall, young man.

Don't you try.

I don't scratch, I claw.

Don't scare off, do you, mama?

Hey, Benjamin, why don't you and
I go have a little talk for a minute?

How'd you know my name?

You're a heavy dude, man.

It's our business to
know heavy dudes.

Yeah, sure.

You clowns better
not lean on Benji.

You hassle Benji,

and we come down on
you like a concrete wall.

That's a promise.

What are you trying
to tell me, man?

I'm telling you that
I've called for a backup.

We can do this one or two ways.

Either you cooperate
or you don't.

Why don't we do it
the easy way, huh?

Hey, man, the cat had a g*n.

I had to defend myself.

But you wouldn't
believe that anyway.

Do you have witnesses to that?

Yeah, I got witnesses.

Plenty of the guys saw it.

If I find the g*n, and
you have witnesses,

it'll probably go down
as a case of self-defense.

Yeah.

Listen, man...

While I search him,

why don't you put these
on and wait in the car?

I'd have to be stupid
to do that, wouldn't I?

Yeah, well, you're
stupid if you don't.

Hey, Benji, what you doing, man?

Back off, pal.

Any of you people saw
what happened here,

I'll take your names
and statements.

Right.

Okay.

Hey, Malloy, I just got the word

that you're riding the lady
commissioner around tonight.

- Pretty funny, right?
- What's so funny?

The way I hear it, you and
Reed hung a ticket on her earlier.

- They got a word for that.
- I can hardly wait.

- It's called stupid.
- Anything else?

Well, I just thought
I'd tell you it's a shame

that you and Reed are going to
be the P.D.'s first two meter men.

Good evening, Patsy.

It was.

- Hi, Ed.
- Oh, Reed.

I just talked to a
couple of meter maids.

They tell me there's
a special on chalk

down at Sumner's
department store.

Maybe I'm not plugged
in. What's he talking about?

Don't ask.

I got a call from T.J.

He wants us to drop
by when we can.

Where's the commissioner?

In the coffee room taking seven.

She's having a hot can of stew.

Oh, that's smooth.

You guys really know
how to put on a feed.

Good-bye, Ed.

I was going to have
dinner all ready.

I put my money in the
machine, and I lost it.

Uh-huh.

Let me open that for you.

Why don't you get a new machine?

That's not a bad idea.

Last week, Sanchez jammed
his thumb twice hitting that thing.

Sanchez has lousy technique.

You got to keep your palm open,

and snap your
wrist when you hit it.

Would you like a cup of coffee?

Yes, thank you.

- Pete?
- Yeah.

Looks good.

One-Adam-12, clear.

One-Adam-12, clear.

What now?

We still have to see T.J.

- Who's T.J.?
- He's an informant.

He's turned some
pretty good stuff for us.

He wanted us to stop by
and check with him tonight.

One-Adam-12,
One-Adam-12, see the woman.

A missing juvenile. 4810 Garber.

One-Adam-12, roger.

I'm Officer Malloy.

This is my partner,
Officer Reed,

and this is Mrs. Dixon
who's riding with us tonight.

I'm Diane Stanley.

You must excuse me. I'm upset.

Please, sit down.

You reported a missing juvenile.

How long has the
child been gone?

You must be careful.
You mustn't frighten him.

His name is Roy
Wilson, and he's just 17.

We'll do our best.

I'm sorry. That's
not what I meant.

You have to understand
the deaf, Officer Malloy.

Did you see the children
when you came in?

When they saw you?

How did they look?

Frightened, didn't they?

It's a terrible thing to say,

but most deaf people are
extremely fearful of the police.

They know they
can't communicate,

and they're afraid
of getting sh*t.

It's really more
complicated than that.

We'll do everything
we can, Mrs. Stanley.

Roy's been here for a month.

He's an unwanted child.

His parents didn't want
him, so they left him with us.

He's been going through a
terrible period of adjustment.

He simply can't accept the fact

that he's not wanted.

Where do his parents
live, Mrs. Stanley?

Maybe he's trying
to get back to them.

They live in Santa Barbara.

I'm sure he's trying
to get back home.

But you must find him.

He's emotionally disturbed,

and if he gets home
and he's rejected again,

it could affect him permanently.

Can you tell us what
he was wearing?

Yes, he was wearing a
yellow sweater and blue pants

and tennis shoes.

Mrs. Stanley, do you
have a picture of this boy?

Yes, right here.

I found one from the
files for you to have.

What is it? Is something wrong?

Earlier this evening,
Mrs. Stanley,

my partner and I
stopped this boy,

and when we tried
to talk to him, he ran.

I lost him over on
Northside Avenue.

Was he hurt?

No, ma'am, not
as far as we know.

You better put out a
supplemental broadcast.

Please, please be careful.

He's only a boy.

We will, ma'am, if
he just slows down.

well afford to go into in depth.
