- I'm angelina ballerina,

And today is one of the biggest days in my entire life.

- Angelina!

Polly!

Breakfast!

Oh!

You sure got down here fast.

- Today is the day I'm meeting ms. Mimi.

- [Yawns]

Meeting ms. Who?

- Ms. Mimi,

The dance teacher at my new school.

Miss lilly says she's wonderful.

Now, chew faster, polly, so we can go.

- Angelina, please don't rush your sister.

You'll get to school on time, and everything will be--

- Wonderful.

I just know it.

I'll be ms. Mimi's best dancer,

Just like I was with miss lilly.

[Cheerful classical music]

- Oh, angelina.

What a beautiful and talented young dancer you are.

- Oh, thank you, ms. Mimi.

- You're going to star in my fall show

And my winter show

And my spring show.

From now on, the star of every show will be...

Angelina.

[Applauds]

- Angelina.

Angelina.

- Oops.

I was just practicing my pirouettes for ms. Mimi.

- Me too!

[Hums]

- [Laughs]

Mum, do you think ms. Mimi will teach me

To do a grand jete?

That's what I was working on with miss lilly,

And I was getting really, really close.

Ooh! Oh!

Oof!

[Nervous laughter]

Well, maybe not that close.

- With a lot of practice and ms. Mimi's help,

I'm sure you'll get it soon.

- Thanks, mum.

[Bell rings]

- Hey, angelina.

Wait up!

- Hi, vici.

Hurry.

- Why are you in such a rush?

- I can't wait to finally meet ms. Mimi.

- She's so amazing.

- I hope she'll be as amazing as my old teacher, miss lilly.

[Gasps] look!

A picture of miss lilly.

- Wow, she must be the greatest dancer

In chipping cheddar!

- And the greatest teacher.

- Well, I think ms. Mimi is the greatest teacher

In all of mouseland.

- Ah, second greatest, maybe.

I want to show her my grand jete.

Whoa!

Ooh!

Oops.

- You okay?

- Uh-huh.

Maybe I just need some more room.

- You can try it again in the studio.

You can do all the grand jetes you want in here.

- [Sighs deeply]

Ooh!

- Oh!

- Oops.

Excuse me.

I'm so sorry.

- You must be angelina.

I'm ms. Mimi.

- Uh-oh.

- I've heard so much about you from miss lilly.

- Um, did miss lilly tell you I can do an arabesque?

Because I can.

And a saute.

And a pas de chat.

She was just about to teach me a grand jete,

So we can work on that right now if you want and...

- Whoa.

Not so fast, angelina.

What did miss lilly do at the beginning of class?

- Oh, right.

Warm-up.

Of course.

- All right, class.

Warm-up time.

[Bouncy piano music]

And now for some music.

How about a little jazz?

[Upbeat jazz music playing]

- Jazz?

In a ballet class?

Uh, ms. Mimi?

Miss lilly always played classical music,

Like mozart, during warm-up.

- Really?

But I just love jazz.

The smooth, mellow sounds

Just make me want to stretch.

- Mmm!

- Ah!

- Not first position.

Stretch.

- Sorry!

We always started with first position.

- Now the cool jazz sounds are inspiring me

To bend way back like a noodle.

Can you be a noodle, angelina?

- Sure.

I guess.

- Hmm.

Let's all touch our toes.

- [Sighs]

- And wiggle our nose.

- Uh-oh...

- Angelina, I do things a little differently in my class.

Won't you give my way a try?

- Yes, of course.

- And now let's all do a jazzy pirouette.

- That looked like a ballet pirouette.

- With ms. Lilly, we always did plain pirouettes

Without all that jazz.

[Bell rings]

- Lunchtime!

After we eat, we'll meet in the lunchtime theater.

- Are you okay, angelina?

- I'm just not used to ballet with jazz...

Or noodles.

If I can't even be a noodle with ms. Mimi,

I'll probably never learn to do a grand jete.

Oh, miss lilly.

My new class is so different, and I keep messing up.

Ms. Mimi does so many things I don't understand.

I'm afraid I might never learn how to do a grand jete.

[Sighs]

[Twinkling]

- Places, everybody.

You too, angelina.

Today we are going to do the most difficult dance

We ever created.

- Oh?

- It's called the moon dance,

And only my very best students are good enough to do this.

So let's put on our imaginary space helmets.

Angelina, you too.

All right, everybody, let's walk on the moon.

Come on, everybody. Follow me!

Come on, angelina. You're lagging behind!

- Oh!

Oof!

[Gasps]

Ugh!

- Hurry, angelina!

Hurry!

Hurry!

- Wait!

Wait for me!

Wait!

Please!

Wait!

I can't let that happen.

I have to make this afternoon's dance class

Go much, much better.

But how?

I know!

You always said to try my hardest

And put my best toe forward.

Thanks for the great advice, miss lilly.

Sorry I'm late, everybody,

But I'm ready to go.

Jazzy pirouettes or noodles or whatever ms. Mimi wants.

I'm all set, ms. Mimi.

What should we do first?

- Let's try flying.

- Oh, yeah! - Cool!

- Um...

- Let's all float through the air like little butterflies.

- Miss lilly never did this.

- Are you a ladybug, vici?

Excellent.

And what are you, angelina?

- Um...uh...

Ah, a bumblebee!

- Good.

Now swoop around and buzz.

- No, there's actually a bumblebee,

And it's coming right at me!

Shoo!

Leave me alone!

Whoa!

Ooh!

- Angelina, are you okay?

- Not really.

I can't seem to do anything right.

- [Gasps]

- I'm just a failure.

[Cries]

- You know, angelina, my first day at dance class

Was a disaster too.

- Really? You?

- Goodness, I couldn't do anything right.

I thought miss lilly didn't like me.

- What-- what did you do?

- I started to listen.

I gave up the idea that my way was the only way,

And suddenly I began to learn.

So when I asked you to be a noodle...

- You were telling me to be more open to new ideas,

Like being a bug or a bumblebee.

But that bee, the way it hops from flower to flower,

It's--it's almost like dancing.

Ms. Mimi, I know how to do it now.

Watch.

Watch.

- Brava, angelina.

A flawless grand jete.

- I listened to you, ms. Mimi.

I pretended I was a bumblebee, and I flew!

Oh, ms. Mimi, I promise I'll listen from now on.

I'll be a really, really good student.

- Hello.

I'm angelina ballerina.

Today we're going to see some ballroom dancing.

That's where people dance together as partners.

This is called "swing dancing."

It started back in the s

With a kind of jazz music called "swing."

It takes a lot of practice to work well with your partner

So you know what to do next.

See how they move in time to the music?

Every step matches the tempo and each other.

They're simply stupendous.

Hello.

I'm angelina ballerina.

Today we're going to see some ballroom dancing.

Now, this is called "merengue."

It's a latin dance from the dominican republic.

It has a two-step b*at, like a march.

Right, left. Right, left.

My, what a fancy dance!

Sometimes, ballroom dancing is called social dancing.

But whatever you call it,

Ballroom is simply a ball.
