- I'm angelina ballerina.

And today I'm meeting alice at school early

So we can practice.

But where is she?

- Here I am.

Let's go.

- [Clears throat]

Twirling till the day is done.

Time to say, "good night, dear sun."

Tomorrow is a brand-new day, another chance to dance.

Hurray!

[Clapping]

- Oh, I love your poem.

- Thanks.

Now it's your turn.

Oh, look.

A purple butterfly.

- Oh, how pretty.

- I wonder if I can hold it.

- Look, its wings are fluttering faster.

Oh, angelina, we scared it.

- Bye, beautiful butterfly.

- Bye.

Okay.

Now I'll recite my poem.

[School bell rings]

- We're late for dance class.

- Come on.

You can practice your poem on the way.

- I love to spring.

I love to hop.

I love to flip.

I cannot stop.

I love to--

Um, uh--

Oh, no.

I practiced all last night.

- You'll remember it, alice.

- [Gasps]

What if I forget the words to my poem

When I'm in front of the whole class?

- Yo, angelina and alice.

Don't be late.

- Let's go.

You can practice in dance class.

[Jazzy music and snapping]

- Book down, alice.

It's time to catwalk.

- What a cool name for a dance step.

- It's a jazz dance step.

Now, everyone, stand straight as a pencil.

[Laughter]

Let's do a few catwalks and then spin around like a pencil.

- [Grunting]

- Whoa!

- [Laughs]

- Yeah!

Jazz dancing is the best.

- Yeah!

- Those are just two jazz steps.

There are a lot more.

- I want to learn all the steps.

- Today we'll concentrate on a fun part of jazz:

Improvisation.

- Like in jazz music.

You can take the tune and play it in your own way.

Right?

- Exactly.

Once you know some of the basics,

You can make up your own dance.

- Oh, hurray!

- Let me give you the steps.

Catwalk,

Pencil turn,

And a fan kick.

And jump over a log.

[Laughter]

Now you can put the steps together in your own way.

- I'll go first.

- Now, everyone, improvise.

- Come on, alice.

Let's jump over a log.

- Excellent.

- Yeah!

- We'll do more jazz dancing next class.

- Hurray!

- Yeah!

Thanks, ms. Mimi.

- Now it's poem time.

- Oh, no.

- I want to recite my poem first.

- I'll be second.

- I love to spring.

I love to hop.

I love to flip.

I cannot stop.

I love to--

Oh, no.

I forgot it again.

- Alice?

- Tomorrow is a brand-new day,

Another chance to dance.

Hurray!

[Applause]

- That was great, angelina.

- Good rhyming.

- And now it's alice's turn.

But where is she?

- [Sighs]

Hello, butterfly.

- Oh, what a fabulous butterfly.

- [Sighs]

- Alice, are you all right?

- My tummy feels a little funny.

- Oh, dear.

Do you need to see the school nurse?

- [Sighs]

I don't feel sick,

Just, my tummy feels funny.

- Alice, you weren't in class to recite your poem.

- I didn't want to forget the words

In front of everyone.

- Oh, poem day, huh?

- We have to stand in front of the whole class...

- And recite our poems all by ourselves.

- See this butterfly?

It reminds me of when I used to get worried

Before my performances.

- It does?

- Yes.

Sometimes I would get tummy butterflies.

- What?

Huh?

- Butterflies?

- Tummy?

I do not understand.

- It's when your tummy feels funny, not sick,

But like it's got fluttering butterflies inside.

- I think I have tummy butterflies right now.

- I've had tummy butterflies.

- So have i.

- Me too.

- When I get scared, it helps me to talk louder.

- When I have to stand up in front of everyone,

I just pretend that they're all in their pajamas

And their hair looks funny.

[Laughter]

- I can try those things too.

- Guess what, alice.

Mr. Hopper said that whoever didn't recite a poem today

Will get to do theirs tomorrow...

- Okay.

I can do it.

- On the lunchtime theater stage

For the whole school.

- [Gasps]

Oh, no.

My tummy butterflies are back.

- Try it once for us, alice.

- It's always good to practice.

- Okay.

I love to spring.

I love to hop.

I love to flip.

I cannot stop.

I love to--

Oh, no.

- Don't worry, alice.

Let's practice jazz steps now, and you can try again later.

[Jazzy piano music and snapping]

- Fan kick.

- Come on, alice.

- [Laughs]

[Laughter]

I wish reciting my poem was this much fun.

- You'll do great tomorrow, alice.

I know you'll remember every word.

What if alice doesn't remember her poem tomorrow?

[Sighs]

I just wish I could take away her tummy butterflies.

[Sweet instrumental music]

Oh, hello.

What did you say?

Are you talking about my friend alice?

Oh, that's an idea.

An excellent idea.

- I love to spring.

I love to hop.

I love to flip.

I cannot stop.

Girls: alice.

- Over here.

- Regarde,alice.

- Huh?

- Time for the butterfly jazz dance.

- Oh, for me?

- Oui,

For you.

[Jazzy piano music]

[Jazzy music and snapping]

- Yeah!

- Hey, alice.

It's your turn to recite your poem.

- But I'm dancing.

- I bet you can dance and say your poem at the same time.

- Huh?

- [Clears throat]

Girls: I love to jump.

I love to hop.

- I love to flip.

I cannot stop.

Another flip, I'm upside down.

I love to turn the world around.

[Applause]

I did it.

I remembered all the words.

- Good job.

You forgot to think about the tummy butterflies,

So they disappeared.

Oh, look.

- Come, butterfly.

Looks like you love jazz dance too.

- Now it's time to meet camembert's shining stars.

- My name is tiffany.

- I'm stephanie.

- I'm brittany.

- I'm lisa.

- We dance with new york chinese cultural center.

[Intense drumming]

- We're performing the lion dance.

This dance is over , years old.

And usually it's danced to celebrate during festivals.

- The lions are played by two people.

One is the head, and one is the tail.

- They're good lions.

- The little girls play with the lion.

And all together,

We try to scare the evil spirits away

And bring in good luck.

- When you first learn how to do a cartwheel,

You just can't stop.

The musicians,

They follow along as we go on in the dance.

During more exciting parts in the dance,

The music gets louder.

- My part in the dance is to tease the lion.

And the lion kind of scares me,

So I have to tease him back.

I get to jump on the lion's back and ride on him.

Sometimes it's a little bit hard,

'Cause I have to jump high.

- Chinese dance sometimes has acrobatics

To, like, make it feel, like, joyful.

- It's fun, and I love wearing makeup.

[School bell rings]

- That music makes me want to tap-dance.

And yippee!

Ms. Mimi is teaching us tap dance.

We're starting with soft-shoe,

But soon we'll do it with tap shoes.

The soft-shoe is great fun, though,

So we're not in a hurry.

- Wait till we put on the tap shoes

And start really dancing.

- Well, most of us aren't in a hurry.

- While you're learning tap dance,

I'm learning magic.

My uncle gave me this book.

Want to see a trick?

Both: yes, let's see one.

- Abracadabra.

Alamajere.

Watch me pull coins from behind this nice ear.

- Ow!

- Voila!

Oh, pardon,angelina.

But I don't think you have the right ears for this trick.

- Shuffle forward, dancers.

Brush your feet against the floor.

[Wooden scraping]

Almost any tap dance you do will include a shuffle.

Please concentrate, gracie.

[Wooden scraping]

That's it, dancers.

Shuffle.

Sweep the floor with the bottoms of your feet.

- My dad has some music that would be good for tap.

Want to come over to practice?

- Let's go.

- It sounds fun,

But I've been tap-dancing for almost my whole life.

I don't need to practice.

- Gracie, dear,

I saw that you weren't practicing your shuffle.

- I already know how to shuffle, ms. Mimi.

See?

- But it's good to brush up on the basics.

You need to know the beginning steps

Before moving on.

- But I do, ms. Mimi.

I really do.

Voila!

Look how fast I can do it.

There.

Better, right?

- Your tap doesn't look quite like ms. Mimi's, gracie.

- It looks kind of rusty.

You might need to practice the easy stuff a teensy bit.

- It's because I didn't warm up.

Actually, I can do it perfectly.

Look, angelina.

I have a new magic trick.

Can you please be my helper?

- I'm not sure.

I think I'm busy.

- And now may I present a special trick?

Voila!

Abracadabra.

Alakazara.

Give angelina a sparkly tiara.

[Audience gasping]

Oops.

Oh, no.

Angelina?

Angelina?

Angelina?

Angelina?

Angelina?

- Hmm?

- Angelina?

Both: angelina?

- Thank goodness I'm no longer a piece of cheese.

- Please, I need your help.

- Thanks, gracie, but I'm going to wait

Till you've had a bit more practice.

My ear still hurts from the last trick.

- Okay.

I'll do the trick myself.

Alice?

Please hand me your lunch bag.

I will be very careful with it.

Abracadabra.

Alacabunch.

Bird fly out of alice's lunch.

Voila!

Birdie?

Oh, birdie.

Ugh.

[Giggles nervously]

I must have forgotten to wind up the pretend bird

So it would fly.

Ohhh.

- [Gasps]

- Sorry, alice.

My trick was ruined by your peanut butter.

This is what I've been waiting for,

To dance a real tap dance.

- Ms. Mimi didn't think we'd be ready yet.

- It's because we worked so hard at our beginning steps.

- Aren't you so happy to be done

With those silly beginning steps?

- Not me.

I kind of liked learning them.

- Me too.

I don't have to be doing hard dances to have fun.

- [Laughs]

I forget that not everyone is like me.

I do the easy stuff fast, then skip ahead.

- Tapping on the floor is like b*ating on a drum.

Shuffle...ball change.

Shuffle... Ball change.

Bravo!

Pick up the tempo as the music gets faster.

- Ooh.

[Grunting]

- I'm sorry, gracie.

But I'm not sure you're ready for this dance.

- Oh, please, ms. Mimi.

Give me a minute.

[Tapping out of rhythm]

- Remember,

There are no shortcuts with dance.

- But I thought I was really good at tap.

Why does it feel so hard today?

- You haven't done much tap lately.

Even famous dancers always go over the basic steps.

- Maybe I am a little out of practice.

Oh.

[Wooden shuffling]

I guess I should have listened to ms. Mimi.

Now I am behind.

- Your tap will come back, gracie.

We can practice with you and help you catch up.

- Really?

- Really, truly.

Hello, I'm angelina ballerina.

My friends are performing the chinese lion dance.

Two performers are needed for each costume:

One for the head and one for the tail.

I wonder how the dancers know

How to jump and roll at the same time.

They told me the lions' heads are made of papier-mache,

And a boy lion wears a red bow,

While a girl lion wears a green one.

But I think she should wear a pink bow like mine.

[Laughs]

- Hola,marco here.

I'm listening to my friend yibiao play the flute.

Did you know that flutes have been around

Since the time of the cavemen?

Flutes are wind instruments, just like recorders.

That means air makes the sound.

Do you see how yibiao puckers his lips

To push air through the flute

And his fingers cover the holes to make the different pitches?

I want to play flute at the next camembert parade.

It's easier to carry than a tuba.

Gracias,yibiao!
