Well, hello, pteranodon clan,
And t*nk.
Hello, mr. Conductor.
Play date on the dinosaur train?
Yep. We're taking a ride back in time to meet a relative
Of t*nk's.
Is that so?
My mom says I have an ancestor.
That means a relative from long, long ago. [Squawks]
Uh-huh. An ancestor of mine named penelope. She has a frill,
But no horns.
Hmm. Let's see. A relative of yours with a frill and no
Horns. Sounds to me like a protoceratops.
That was her name--penelope protoceratops.
Observe.
Wow! Protoceratops really doesn't have any horns. Maybe
We should bring her some.
But why doesn't she have horns? t*nk, you use your horns
For protection, right?
Sometimes. Sure.
So if protoceratops don't have horns, maybe she doesn't
Have to protect herself that much. Maybe there aren't many
Meat-eating carnivores where she lives.
That is a well-thought-out hypothesis, buddy, and
Protoceratops does live in a different environment, without
Many predators.
What kind of environment does penelope live in?
Glad you asked, tiny. Most protoceratops live in the

No, t*nk, the desert. That's where we'll go to meet penelope

I happen to know penelope loves visitors. But just so you
Know, the area where she lives does tend to get earthquakes.
Earthquakes?
You mean when the ground shakes and shakes under your
Feet? Uh-uh-uh-uh-uh!
Ha ha!
Exactly.
Um, if there are earthquakes, then maybe we shouldn't go.
Earthquakes are serious, shiny, but even places known for
Getting earthquakes don't get them all the time. Isn't that
Right, mr. Conductor?
Well, actually--ahem--i must say that earthquakes do happen
All the time. There's an earthquake about every
Seconds somewhere on earth.
Really?
Really?
Ahem.
But most earthquakes are very short and not that strong. What
Your mom means is usually they happen way down deep, so up here
We can't even feel them.
But what if you're in an earthquake that you can feel?
First of all, if it happens, you should listen to the
Grownups, and there are things we can do to protect ourselves
In an earthquake.
Absolutely. Stay calm and don't run around. Best thing to
Do is stay out in the open and move away from anything that
Might come loose and fall on you.

You're not alone. But remember, we never even feel most

The land? Like the ground and trees and things?

Change the way land looks. They can even make mountains.
Earthquakes can make mountains?
How?
The surface of the earth is broken up into giant chunks
Called plates.
Like the kind we eat off of on the dinosaur train?
Maybe that's why I like eating plants so much. They're
Served up on giant plates.
[All giggle] interesting theory, but these
Plates are different. They're giant, giant, giant stretches of

Hi, there. I'm dr. Scott, the paleontologist, and this is
The skull of a dinosaur that we discovered right here in utah.
I named it utahceratops.
Utahceratops was a horned dinosaur, or ceratopsians, and
This was a huge animal, about feet long, but most impressive
Of all is its enormous head, almost feet long. Utahceratops
Had a large horn over the nose and short eye horns that stuck
Out to the side. Similar sideways-pointing horns can be
Seen today in bison.
Utahceratops' horns are different form the horns of all
Other ceratopsians. Triceratops had one horn over the nose and
Much bigger horns over the eyes that pointed forward instead of
To the side. Coahuliaceratops also had a horn over the nose
And even bigger horns over the eyes, and kosmoceratops, well,
It had a total of horns all over its head. This is the
Skull of a small ceratopsian named protoceratops. You can
See that it's tiny compared to the skull of utahceratops, but
All these plant eaters have a lot in common, including a
Narrow turtle-like beak up front and a big boney frill in
The back, and they all walked on legs. Ok. Keep watching for
More dinosaur discoveries.

I wonder how those eggs felt about the aftershock. Do you
Think they liked it as much as I did? What do you think the
Little dinosaurs in the eggs are doing? Do you think they're
Asleep?
But how do the babies breathe in there?
I have a hypothesis. The egg shells must be thin enough for
The babies inside to breathe.
But they still must be really strong because none of
Them cracked during the aftershock.
Well, you're both right. The eggshells are thin enough for
The babies inside to breathe, but they're also really strong.
If you look closely, you can see lots of tiny holes in the
Shells. Take a gander through my supermagnifying glass. Those

Is that these fossils are about million years old. Like
Birds, dinosaurs laid their eggs in circular nests, usually
