ABC MouseHey, everybody! Let's G-O, go!

Woman[singing] With ABC, --, and Do-Re-Mi

There's endless people and places to see

From the classroom they can search and explore

With every adventure you learn more

They visit countries near and far

They love to learn wherever they are

They see the world in a brand-new way

They make great new friends every day

ABC, --, and Do-Re-Mi

Come along and you will see

The more they travel, the more you know

Get ready, let's G-O, go

[humming, whistles]

-- MouseNeed some help, ABC?

ABC MouseSure, -,. I'm making a bridge.

-- MouseOh, I love bridges. ABC MouseMe too!

Tomorrow, the teacher's going to tell the class

about a bridge on the West Coast of the United States

that's more than a mile long and has two tall towers.

-- MouseMore than a mile long?

ABC MouseMy bridge is only a foot long,

but I want to make a longer one with that.

-- MouseOh, and I know right where to put it.

ABC MouseOh, this is going to be F-U-N, fun.

Do-Re-Mi MouseOoh, what's going on? What's going to be fun?

ABC MouseBuilding a bridge in the classroom.

Do you want to try it out with us?

Do-Re-Mi MouseOf course I do. Oh, but I can't right now.

I just learned about a new way to paint, and I want to try it out.

ABC MouseDo you know what picture you're going to paint?

Do-Re-Mi Mouse: Nope, but it'll come to me.

It always does. Just wait and see.

ABC MouseThis is one nice-looking bridge, --.

Let's pretend that our bridge is over a mile of cold ocean water.

-- MouseLuckily, our bridge is strong and--

bothWhoa!

ABC MouseStop walking.

-- MouseAh, our bridge might not be as strong as I thought.

ABC MouseLet's go this way.

-- MousePhew, I'm glad that wasn't a real ocean under us.

ABC MouseAnd that was just five feet.

How could anyone ever build a bridge that's more than a mile long?

I have to find out how they did it.

-- MouseMe too.

bothLet's search it!

[upbeat music]

ABC MouseOkay, we know it's a bridge with two towers.

-- Mouse: Oh, there's the Brooklyn Bridge,

but it's on the East Coast, and our bridge is on the...

ABC MouseWest Coast. Like that one.

-- MouseYes, in the city of San Francisco in the state of California.

ABC MouseAnd listen to this. It has two tall towers.

-- MouseIt's more than one mile long.

ABC MouseIt's called the Golden Gate Bridge.

--, I have to go see it.

-- MouseThen Golden Gate Bridge, here we come.

ABC MouseLet's G-O, go!

[adventurous music]

Oops, bye, Do-Re-Mi.

Do-Re-Mi MouseHave fun.

Hmm, the Golden Gate Bridge.

Ooh, that gives me an idea.

ABC MouseThere's California!

-- MouseAnd there's San Francisco! We're almost there, ABC.

ABC MouseWhoa, I wonder who that is.

-- MouseI saw that statue when we were searching.

That's Joseph Strauss.

He led the team that built the bridge.

ABC MouseSpeaking of the bridge, look at how tall those towers are.

-- MouseI wonder what they're for.

ABC MouseWell, let's find out.

[phone rings]

MarioOh, wow, ABC and --. My kids love you.

ABC MouseWhoa. -- MouseLook how high up we are.

MarioMy name's Mario.

What brings you to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge?

ABC MouseWell, we tried building a long bridge,

but it started swaying and sagging.

-- MouseSo we thought we'd come here to learn how Joseph Strauss

built a bridge that's more than a mile long.

MarioStrauss's brilliant idea was to make the Golden Gate Bridge

what's called a suspension bridge.

See those giant cables on both sides that swoop from one tower to the other?

The roadway below is actually hanging from those cables.

So the roadway is what you call suspended from the cables.

ABC MouseSo that's why they call this a suspension bridge.

MarioWell, I better get back to work.

I've got a lot of painting to do.

-- MouseAre you painting this whole bridge by yourself?

MarioOh, no.

There are about of us

who keep applying a fresh coat

of international orange paint to keep the rust away.

That's the actual name of this color.

ABC MouseThen why do they call it the Golden Gate Bridge?

MarioGood question, ABC.

Here's a map of the area before the bridge was built.

Now, do you see how this water has land around it?

That makes it a good place for ships,

because the land helps to protect them from ocean storms.

A place like that has a special name.

-- MouseOh, oh, I know this one!

It's called a bay.

MarioRight. [birds caw]

So this is called the San Francisco Bay.

ABC MouseLook at the ships and boats.

MarioA few hundred years ago,

an explorer named this opening between the Pacific Ocean

and the San Francisco Bay the Golden Gate.

So that's why it's called...

bothThe Golden Gate Bridge.

[traffic rumbles, horns honk]

ABC MouseWhat do you say, --, are you ready to see more?

ABC MouseSure. But how?

ABC MouseSliding down the cable, of course.

Come on!

-- MouseMario, how do you get down?

MarioOh, the elevator.

-- MouseYou hear that? ABC?

ABC MouseWhoa! -- MouseThere's an elevator!

[ABC Mouse cheers, laughs]

Good-bye, Mario.

bothWhee!

ABC MouseHow fun is this?

-- MouseWell, it's definitely more fun than an elevator.

ABC Mouse[gasps]

Quick, grab my tail.

-- MouseDone. I'm ready to...

ABC MouseJump!

[bell dings]

[laughter] bothWhoo-hoo!

ABC MouseT-E-R-R-I. Terri.

TerriAre you both all right?

ABC MouseHi. We're great.

-- MouseWhen you go exploring with ABC,

this kind of thing happens a lot.

TerriI love bridges.

-- MouseMe too.

TerriWhen I grow up, I'm going to be an engineer and build bridges

just like Joseph Strauss.

ABC MouseLook, a seagull. Where do you think it's going?

TerriMaybe it sees a fishing boat.

ABC MousePeople are fishing down there? TerriSure.

[bell dings]

ABC MouseThanks. We'll get off here.

[laughter]

[horn honking]

-- MouseBye, Terri. Whoa!

Oh! Ooh!

Wait, ABC? Where'd you go?

ABC MouseOver here, --.

[wind blowing]

We can climb down these metal bolts.

-- MouseI have another idea.

ABC MouseFlyers? -- MouseYes, in a way.

We're making parachutes.

ABC MouseParachutes, yes!

[wind blowing]

Ready, set, go!

[exciting music]

[laughter]

Whoo!

-- MouseI know Do-Re-Mi likes to paint,

but she can't be having this much fun.

Can she?

[upbeat music]

ABC MouseHey, race you!

[exciting music]

SonABC Mouse, cool.

Dad, look, it's ABC and --.

DadOh, welcome aboard. ABC MouseThanks.

-- MouseWhat are you fishing for?

SonWell, out there in the open water, mostly bass and California halibut,

and by the base of the tower here, mostly rockfish.

There are harbor seals too, but we don't fish for them of course.

ABC MouseThe base of the tower.

I've got to dive in and see what it looks like.

SonOh, and sharks.

ABC MouseSharks?

-- Mouse[chuckles] Maybe you should just stick your head in.

ABC MouseGood thinking, --.

[wondrous music]

This is awesome!

[laughs]

There's so much wildlife, it's incredible!

And it looks like the tower goes right down into the bottom of the bay.

-- MouseOh, ABC, I can't wait to build our own suspension bridge.

bothThanks. Bye. SonBye.

ABC MouseAnd I saw a seal and a shark.

Do-Re-Mi Mouse: Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-WHOA!

ABC Mouse: Oh, what did you end up painting?

-- MouseReady! ABC MouseOh, the bridge is ready.

[upbeat music]

Do-Re-Mi Mouse: Whoa, that is one amazing bridge.

-- MouseWe learned how to make a really long suspension bridge

with cables and towers.

ABC MouseJust like the Golden Gate Bridge.

[light music]

-- MouseReady to test it out? ABC MouseReady!

-- MouseI think it's working. ABC MouseMe too!

Whoo-hoo! -- MouseYay!

ABC MouseI'm so proud of us. -- MouseOh, we did it!

ABC MouseOoh, --, maybe we should paint it.

Do-Re-Mi Mouse: Ah. Did you say paint?

Ready,

set, open your eyes.

Take a look at my surprise.

ABC MouseWhoa! -- MouseIt's the Golden Gate Bridge.

Do-Re-Mi MouseI painted it in the style of an artist named Seurat,

who was famous for making paintings with small dots of color, like this.

ABC MouseWell, I think the painter we met, Mario,

would absolutely love it.

It's a real work of art.

[upbeat music]

[light music]
