- Whoo-hoo!

- Do you like dressing up?

When I was in India,

the engines all wore

amazing costumes

for a really exciting

competition.

[whistle toots]

All aboard for a big adventure!

[Thomas]

Shankar's Makeover.

[Thomas]

It was the end of another busyday on the Indian railway,and Shankar was finishinghis shunting.

[horn blows]

- Whoo-hoo! The spectacular

Shankar Shimmy!

[laughs]

- Early night for me.

Got to look my best for the

fancy costume contest tomorrow.

- Oh, I can't wait!

I love wearing a costume.

Have you chosen yours?

[whistle toots]

Who do you think will win?

- The winning's not important,

Thomas!

But, between you and me,

I think I have a good chance.

- My theme is flower power!

I'll be the most colorful

engine in India!

- Oh, sounds great!

How 'bout you, Rajiv?

- Ha! Let's just say

my decorations

would be fit for a king.

- What will your costume be,

Thomas?

- Can't decide.

What about you, Shankar?

- Me? Ha!

I won't be taking part.

- What? Why not?

- We ask him every year,

and every year, he says no.

- I can't think of

anything worse

than everyone staring at me.

[shudders]

- I can't think of anything

better!

- Ha! I'm happy shunting

the coal cars

like I do every year.

It's a very important job,

so if you don't mind,

I'm off to bed.

- Psst, Shankar, are you awake?

- Mm, ah, what?

- You have to enter the fancy

costume contest, just once!

- No. I said I don't want to.

- Why aren't you two asleep

yet?

- Because...

Shankar wants to ask

if he could enter the contest

this year.

- Thomas, no, I don't!

- You're just nervous.

Don't worry.

- Well, that's wonderful news,

Shankar.

Of course you can enter.

- But I need to do all the coal

shunting, Charubala, ma'am.

- Well, you can do both

if you like.

- But I don't have

any decorations!

- [Thomas] Well, I can

sort them out for you.

- But--I--well--

[sighs]

I suppose.

- Great! I'll add you

to the list of competitors

straight away.

Now, off to sleep, you two.

- Whoo-hoo!

Sweet dreams, Shankar.

- [engines snoring]

- Me? In a costume?

In front of a crowd?

Oh, no, no, no, no.

I wasn't made for life

in the spotlight.

[dreamy music]- [Emcee]

And now,singing live is Shankar!

[cheers and applause]

- [clears throat]

♪ I'm a diesel train called

Shankar ♪

♪ Shankar is my name ♪

♪ I like to-- ♪ [stammers]

- [coughs]

- [boos and laughter]

- I--

- [Thomas]

Shankar! Wakey wakey!

- Oh, I can't do it.

I can't be in the contest.

I need to tell Charubala.

- It's too late!

You've overslept.

And you've got

a whole morning's shunting

to catch up on before you can

put on your costume!

Ta-da!

- Ah!

- But I don't want everyone

staring at me

in some silly costume.

- It's only a bit of fun,

Shankar.

[whistle toots]

There's nothing to worry about.

See you at the contest!

- Oh.

[elephant trumpets]

- [laughs]

[trumpets]

[Thomas]

Everyone was excitedto put on their costumes.Well, almost everyone.

- Oh.

[lively music]

[camera shutter clicks]

♪ ♪- [Emcee]

Welcome tothe fancy costume contest!Judging will begin soon.

- Where's Shankar?

[gasps]

Aha!

[whistle toots]

[gasps]

Oh.

Shankar!

[laughs]

You look amazing!

- Thomas,

I don't want to do it!

I'm covered

from buffer to buffer.

I look ridiculous!

I don't want anyone to see me

like this.

- Oh, you're just nervous,

Shankar!

Everyone's so excited

to see you!

And you're all

dressed up now, so,

you might as well get

out there!

[whistle toots]

- [sighs]

- Firstly, congratulations

to all the entrants!

Every year, the costumes

seem to get better!

It's been a very tough contest,

but we have made our decision.

And I can reveal the winner of

the fancy costume contest is...

Shankar!

- [gasps]

- Huh?

- [cheers and applause]

- Congratulations, Shankar!

I knew you could do it.

- Do the Shankar Shimmy!

[all] Shankar Shimmy!

Shankar Shimmy!

Shankar Shimmy!

Shankar Shimmy!

- Come on, Shankar,

you can do it!

- [sighs]

[horn blows]

[horn blows]

Ooh. Oh!

[steam hissing]

No!

- [all laughing]

- No!

[both] No!

- Oh, no.

- I didn't want to enter

this silly contest anyway.

- But, you won!

- I don't care about winning!

I care about being useful.

- But you didn't have to enter

if you didn't want to, Shankar.

- Actually, I made him enter

even though he said

he didn't want to.

I thought he'd like it.

- Not everyone likes being

in the spotlight, Thomas,

and that's fine.

- I'm sorry for not listening

to you, Shankar.

- Apology accepted.

Now, please may I go back

to the shunting yard,

Charubala, ma'am?

- Of course,

but those cars still need

shunting.

- [sighs]

[horn blows]

[peppy percussive music]♪ ♪

[all] Whee!

- [cheers and applause]

- Ah.

- Whoo-hoo!

- Hooray!

- Well done.

- Perfect!

- That's how you do

the Shankar Shimmy!

[cheering]

[whistle toots]

- Has a friend ever pushed you

to do something you didn't

want to do?

[steam whooshing]

Once, Philip wantedto have a race,but Toby didn't want to.He had his own slower wayof doing things.Philip didn't respect this,and made Toby race him anyway,which nearly endedin a big crash!Shankar said he didn't want totake part in the contest,but I made him enter anyway.I thought he would like it.He ended up feelingembarrassedin front of everyone,and I realizedI should've listened to himin the first place.[steam whooshing]

Just because we like doing

something,

doesn't mean everybody else

does.

We shouldn't force our friends

to do things

that make them uncomfortable.

- [whistle blows]

- [Annie] Come on, Thomas!

- It's time to go!

- See you next time!

[whistle toots]

[upbeat rock music][upbeat music]

[whistle toots]
