I've been in a lot of hospitals

In my career as a paramedic,

And lots of hospitals,

The majority of them,

Have their own

Ghost stories.

You have births going on

In one area,

And then you have people just

Sometimes feet away

In different rooms

That are leaving this world

Violently and far too quickly.

Narrator: when richard checks

Into the hospital's past,

He learns something shocking.

Estep: I was told by the owners

Of the hospital

That it had a reputation locally

As the hospital of death

And that they had

A higher fatality rate

With routine procedures.

An evening in the hospital

So that's the original mat.

The first night I ever saw

The tooele hospital,

Looked like it should

Have been in a horror film.

It's absolutely quiet,

And I'm looking down a long,

Long, long corridor.

And it just goes off and off

And off into the distance

With all of these

Shadowy alcoves

And doorways

Coming off of it.

And I thought to myself

I've seen movies

That start like this,

And they usually

End badly for the guy

That enters the building

On his own.

Narrator: luckily for richard,

He's not alone for long.

His team arrives,

Including co-investigator

Robbin daidone.

I'm a registered nurse,

And one of the other team

Members that was with us

Was also

A registered nurse.

It's always fascinating when

You're a medical professional

To be in a hospital.

It's like,

Yeah, this is home.

We started out in the front

Of the building.

Estep: okay, so, we're

The only ones in the hospital.

We've checked all

The doors and locks.

The time is :.

It was very, very creepy.

This is was a nurses

Station right here.

To split the team up

To cover more ground.

Estep: you have a lot

Of square footage,

And you have a lot of rooms.

So you tend to target those

That have the best histories.

Narrator:

With new team member autumn.

This was my first

Paranormal investigation,

And I was super nervous.

Autumn is a relatively

New mom,

And so I thought that perhaps

Autumn might experience

Something over

On the obstetric wing.

For the nursery.

This is where they did,

Like, pkus, circumcisions,

Things like that.

And misty to the area

Ran into the guardian.

Sean: so this is

Exam room we're in.

They set up their

Electronic voice phenomenon,

Or evp, equipment hoping

To contact the entity.

Anybody in here?

Estep: anybody present?

Hello?

We're recording,

So if you speak to us,

We should be able

To hear your voice.

We were conducting just

Some easy evp experimentation,

And I noticed that sean had

Gotten increasingly quiet.

-Whoa, hey, sean.

-Ohh!

He suddenly became

Very, very upset.

And he actually

Burst into tears.

We said, "sean, what's wrong?"

And he said, "you know what?

I've got to take a minute.

I've got to get out of here.

Excuse me."

And he turned around,

And he left.

I have never seen him

This emotional

And this serious before.

He's one of the most

Happy-go-lucky

Dependable investigators

I've got.

He suspects something

Attachment is a situation

And can make them feel

Or can provoke strong emotion.

He was certainly being

Influenced by something,

And it was something

That we couldn't see.

It is a scary thing

To be a target,

And it's probably a good time

For us to move out of here

Before it gets worse.

We started asking questions,

Like, "who's with us?

Is there anybody

That can hear our voice?

Can you come talk to us?"

The energy in there

Was really dark.

Autumn has been att*cked

By something unseen.

As though something

Took a claw and swiped.

I was pretty scared

When I felt that.

Really, really bad.

I freaked me out.

Estep:

The pattern is very suggestive

Of something dark,

Potentially demonic.

The scratch didn't look like

Something a human could do.

For an experiment.

The emergency room itself

Was said to be haunted

By the spirit of a doctor.

I generally do not provoke.

However, in this case,

I saw this as

A golden opportunity

To see how he would react

To us being incompetent.

How would he react us

Inept cardiac arrest ever run

In that emergency room?

From the spirit,

Which he uses in

His teaching for e.m.s. Class.

And he brought medication,

Everything we would need

To do a full code.

Richard asked us early on

If we could try

To goof everything up,

If we could miss

Doing an i.v.,

If we could drop

The i.v. Bag.

Estep: everything that we can

Do wrong we do wrong.

The area was very heavy

To begin with.

You got a feeling

When you stepped in that area

That somebody

Was watching you.

[ Medical equipment beeping ]

Richard started to

Yell right in my face

And really holler at us.

And the atmosphere's getting

Kind of blacker in there.

Woman: go!

And you start to see us

Kind of feeding off

Each other's negativity.

We get angry

With each other,

And we're snapping back

And forth at each other.

And everybody

Was full of rage.

Like, it was bad.

Estep:

Finally, I say, "he's dead.

I'm pronouncing him dead."

And I threw down

My stethoscope,

And stormed out of the room,

Slammed through the double doors

Of the e.r.

Narrator: richard takes a moment

To calm down,

But the spirits

Have other ideas.

Maybe feet

From emergency room,

I step through

An open doorway.

Narrator:

In a former hospital in utah,

Investigators have been att*cked

By a spirit dubbed the guardian.

There were very long

Scratch marks

Running down

Has staged

A failed cardiac arrest,

Hoping to provoke the ghost

Of a former doctor.

Feet from the emergency room,

I step through an open doorway.

And then I heard

This almighty slam.

And I jumped

Half out of my skin.

[ Door slams ]

The door had been violently

Slammed just inches behind me.

[ Door slams ]

It was v*olence

Of the slam.

This wasn't just

Letting a door close.

This was slammed with force.

My turned to ice water,

And I got this

Very real sensation of,

"Who do you think you are

To behave like that

In my emergency room?"

All of a sudden, we hear

A bang in the distance.

[ Door slams ]

Robbin: I just heard it.

I just heard, like, something.

Woman:

Yeah, I heard it, too.

A few minutes later, richard

Comes walking around the corner.

He was pale.

He was pale white.

He was totally scared

For his life.

Estep:

Sorry, everybody.

I offered a blanket apology

To whoever or whatever

I had offended.

And I was shaking.

And it is kind of

A reminder that,

You know,

You should be very,

Very careful what you do

In this profession sometimes.

Narrator: worried about

Provoking the spirit further,

Richard takes his team

To investigate

Another part of the hospital.

But escaping the spirits

Isn't that easy.

We start to hear

The sound of footsteps.

We knew the building

Was locked down

Because we'd secured

It ourselves,

And we have a full security

Camera system in place.

So the building's sealed.

There's nobody in there but us.

Narrator:

The hospital maybe empty,

But they are not alone.

Estep:

We're hearing these footsteps

Coming just closer and closer.

Narrator:

Misty, the team's psychic,

Gets a terrible vision

Of what's coming towards them.

Misty: oh, god.

Like, there's some big,

Black mass, thing,

And it's right back there.

Misty said that

There's a guy there

Who is really,

Really tall.

Misty: a big dark,

Like -foot-tall huge,

Like, shadow guy.

Estep: and misty said,

"That's the guardian.

He knows we're in here,

And he's approaching."

Narrator: to her horror,

Misty sees the guardian

Go face to face

With richard.

[ Screaming ]

He was standing right

In front of me,

Squaring off against me,

Screaming obscenities

And profanities into my face.

Robbin:

This was not a nice person,

Especially to the women

And to richard.

It called the c-word

A couple times.

Estep: I told him,

"You're a bully.

I have no respect

For you at all.

I will not back down."

We're not afraid of you.

Richard started to yell.

I got into a blazing argument

With thin air.

Get out now.

He's screaming.

I told him, "I'm not gonna

Tolerate this anymore.

You're

A pathetic little weasel.

Get out of here."

Get out now.

We heard what sounded

Like footsteps receding.

It's a little

Disconcerting to know

That something

Is out to get you

If you can't see it coming.

And it's that knowledge,

It's that sensation

That I truly was not alone

In that corridor.

From the turn of the century.

There have been probably

Thousands of photographs

Taken of what seems

To be this woman.

Some people believe

This might be

The apparition of mrs. Hull,

To have cloven hooves,

A tail,

And was able

To yell profanities

Despite being an infant.

Terrified, a servant

Did the unthinkable.

Bielski: she k*lled the baby

While it was staying there

To rid the world

Of its diabolical influence.

The devil baby story

Was so powerful

That it inspired

One of the most

Famous horror novels

And films of all time,

Which is "rosemary's baby."

Narrator:

The spirit of the devil baby

Is said to still haunt

Hull house.

Bielski: many people have

Reported seeing

What they describe

As creatures --

Half-human,

Half-animal creature

That will run and hide

When they see someone.

Narrator:

When ursula gets a chance

To investigate

Hull house overnight,

She leaps at the chance.

She brings along

Colleague eric,

But as soon as they

Enter the house,

She's struck by

An ominous feeling.

In years of

Staying overnight,

Sleeping in cemeteries

And schools and churches,

Of those rare places

That I don't really

Like to go.

I get a bad,

Oppressive feeling from it.

What we wanted to do was

Of photography experiments

So that we could perhaps

Capture some of the things

Were experiencing.

Defined, not too much.

When you get

A piece of evidence

That backs up experiences

In paranormal investigation.

And mediums

Who have visited the area

Claim to be a portal.

As an investigator,

I was very skeptical.

I thought that it didn't really

Have a basis in reality,

Especially people

Claiming that you could

Bring entities home with you.

If there's any evidence

To support the existence

Of a portal.

We took out an emf meter

And tried to see if there

Was any part of the garden

That we could find

Unusual levels.

And emf meter is measuring

The electrical field,

And if there are fluctuations

In these fields

That can't be explained

By normal means,

And we did find that there

Were several places

In the garden where

The e.m. Readings were raised.

Find a portal,

But something else

That anything physical actually

Happened in her presence.

That they were experiencing

They were hearing

Crazy sounds,

A hammering sound,

Banging noises.

Like somebody was nailing

Nails and hitting pipes.

I'm like, "this is probably

Just a routine assessment,

And I'll just go

Take a look at it,

See what we can

Come up with."

He knows this isn't going

To be a routine investigation.

I started feeling dizzy.

I started getting

This weird sensation

As if I was gonna pass out.

Almost like a vertigo.

And I'm like,

"What is going on?"

Am I gonna be able

To do this investigation?

To help a woman being plagued

By mysterious noises,

He's hit

By a powerful feeling.

I started getting

This weird sensation

As if I was gonna pass out.

And I'm like, "am I gonna be

Able to do this investigation?"

And then I started feeling

A sense of something else.

A lot of times

When you're dealing with

Any type of spirit activity,

The electromagnetic

Frequency around you

Is a little bit too strong,

Almost kind of like radiation is

If you're exposed

To it too much.

And that's what I thought

Was happening to me.

That vertigo sensation

Was something

I have never felt before.

I mean, my whole equilibrium

Was right off.

And then when I got out of

The car, I got a woozy feeling,

Like as if

I was gonna nauseous.

And I'm like, "maybe I should

Just call this off.

Maybe I should reschedule."

But I didn't.

I said, "you know what?

Let me walk it off,

Get some fresh air."

Joe feels well enough

To knock on the front door.

Cetrone: and as I'm waiting

For somebody to open it,

I look down,

And there's this

Tabby-looking cat.

[ Meows ]

And I'm like, "wow,

That's a cool-looking cat."

-Hi. How are you?

-Good.

Then the door opened,

And it was the wife.

Cat goes in.

Nice warm house,

Nice atmosphere.

Narrator: the first thing joe

Does in any investigation

Is walk through the home

Looking for any rational

Explanation for the activity.

I just went through each room,

And I'm saying,

"Had you heard of any activity

Anywhere else?"

And she says, "no, it come

Strictly from the basement."

Narrator:

But as joe heads downstairs,

He's overcome with another

Strong feeling.

Cetrone: I graduated from

Vertigo to anxiety.

I can feel my pulse b*ating,

And I'm like,

"Man, what are you doing, joe?

Get yourself together.

This isn't like you."

I never had this problem

In any case

That I've gone through

Like to that extreme.

Narrator:

After composing himself,

Joe is able to enter

The basement.

Cetrone: looked around

In the basement,

Try to see any boards,

Any type of wood, sheetrock,

Hammer, nails, anything.

Anything that could

Just indicate that

There's something rational

To what's going on.

And it was

The total opposite.

It was basically

An empty basement.

I took some pictures anyway.

See if I can find anything

That come up on the camera.

But I didn't see

Anything at all.

I wasn't insinuating anything

Paranormal in that basement.

Despite the lack of evidence,

Joe's vertigo

Lead him to suspect

Something is going on.

He doesn't hear it.

He asked the couple

If there's anything he's missed.

She said, "I know that

There's nobody in my house,

And I don't know where it's

Coming from, and I'm scared,

And nobody seems to believe me,

Not even my husband."

-I'm not crazy.

-She was nervous about it

Because here she is out

In the middle of nowhere.

It's just her

Surrounded by woods.

The woods in the area

She was a little bit nervous.

There has been

Cultic activity

Throughout those areas

Over the past few years.

And then all of a sudden,

I heard it.

Loud, hammering sounds,

As if a hammer

Was hitting metal.

-Do you hear that?

-And she said, "did you hear it?

Do you hear it?

Now do you believe me?

And I remember

Looking at the husband,

And he just sat there.

And he's looking around.

He's like,

"This just can't be."

I can feel that the hair

On my arm started standing up.

The lightheadedness,

The vertigo,

The hammering sounds --

I mean, there's

Something paranormal.

Narrator: the noises

Are coming from the basement.

Cetrone: it was loud,

It was horrifying.

I knew then that I had

To go back down there

And further research

That basement.

Narrator: cautiously, joe heads

Toward the source of the noises.

Cetrone: I take more pictures.

I got my emf detector.

See if I can get

An change in frequencies.

I'm looking around.

I'm peeking around

The corners.

I'm like,

Is there anything here?

What is going on?

I know there's an energy

That's strong --

Strong enough to throw

My equilibrium off.

Trying to find something.

I can't find anything.

And then I heard scratching.

It's coming from outside.

[ Scratching ]

Look.

And it's the cat.

[ Meows ]

And I'm like, phew.

It's just you.

And I felt relieved

To know that.

But I'm still left with,

What is going on

In his basement?

Narrator:

Instinctively, joe decides

To follow the cat outside.

Maybe the sound

Is coming from out there.

They've got the land.

There's an acre.

I mean,

It could activity outside.

I go out there.

I see the cat.

And the cat takes off.

And I start

Snapping pictures.

Narrator: what joe captures

Gives him the chills.

The second picture I took,

Right in

My little viewfinder,

I see this large,

Bright, white glowing orb,

Probably the size

Of a basketball hovering

About feet in the air.

Essentially, an orb is another

Manifestation of a spirit.

It's energy.

It's one big massive

Ball of energy.

How always can detect

A genuine spirit orb

Is the brightness of the orb,

The glowingness,

And there's usually

A ring around that orb.

I like to call it

The corona of the orb.

Narrator: the brighter the orb,

The more powerful its energy.

And joe can feel

Its intensity.

Cetrone:

I'm feeling tired at that point.

The anxiety has subsided,

But I still feel

A little bit dizzy.

So I went inside.

We're at the table.

I showed them the orb.

I said, "what's really amazing

About all this

Is I don't know

If I wouldn't went outside

And started

Snapping pictures

If it wasn't for your cat."

Narrator: but the millers have

Some shocking news for joe.

They're like,

"No, I'm sorry --

We don't have a cat."

And I'm like,

"But you let the cat in.

The cat went in."

Then I remembered -- last time

I seen the cat outside,

He took off heading

Toward the woods.

Narrator:

Joe heads back outside to track

Down the mysterious creature.

Cetrone: I headed

Where I seen the cat go.

There's a little pathway.

Lo and behold,

I look down on the ground,

And there's a hammer,

There's some nails,

Rusty nails.

And I look over here

To the right,

And I see the bones

Of what appeared to be

An animal laying down dead.

[ Clanging, meowing ]

Narrator: the skeleton

Is that of a cat.

I believe that those noises

And everything

That led up

To me even going there

All had to do with the cat.

Cat was k*lled by someone,

Something,

And it was warning.

It was a warning from that cat

That something happened to it.

I think it was trying

To give the wife a message.

I have never witnessed anything

That had to do with any animal,

Any spirit,

Anything like that.

That was the first time

Something like

That has happened to me.

Narrator:

After joe's grisly discovery,

He offers to cleanse

The property

Of the cat's spirit.

And they said, "you know, joe,

We appreciate you coming here.

It puts closure

On a lot of things.

At least now we know my wife

Is telling the truth."

No cleansing at all.

They were happy

With the evidence that I had,

And they were fine with that.

So they declined

The blessing.

Narrator:

Soon after the investigation,

The paranormal activity

Subsides,

And the millers

Put the haunting behind them.

For joe, it's a case

He'll never forget.

What I did learn is that spirits

Come in all shapes and sizes,

And obviously, also a cat.
