AGE:

Your boy's okay.

A long time ago,
we would've called it... a miracle.

INTENSIVE CARE

[distorted, overlapping whispers]

[nurse, echoing] Don't worry, Jodie.
They gave you something to sleep.

NURSE

Your mom is coming back.
She's done a good job raising you.

Am I going home?

We would love you to come home, Jodie.

But you're still afraid.

It's time to stop running.

Just a few days till you turn .

[Jodie] My pills.

[Lili] You don't need them.

They cloud your mind and your heart.

- [Jodie groans] I need my pills.
- You can make it stop, Jodie.

- [heart pounding]
- [Lili] Close your eyes.

Close them.

Don't be afraid.

[tense music fades]

[Marie] You're up.

I didn't wanna wake you.

Thought you should rest
as much as possible.

- Hey.

[sighs deeply]

Somehow.

Well, we should get you dressed
and take you home.

It's time.

Just like that?

It's hard to believe, but the doctor said
there's no reason for you to be here.

Come on.

[Ángelo, under breath] f*ck.

OPERATING ROOM, RECOVERY

[breathing shakily]

- Ángelo Ramírez?
- Yes. Can I see my dad?

I'm Dr. Álvarez.
I'm taking care of your father.

I'm sorry. You can't go inside to see him.

Why not?

[Álvarez] Your father suffered a trauma.
We need to keep him in a relaxed state.

A visit could agitate him.

Why's that f*cking gringo fine
when my dad's messed up?

[Álvarez] We have to wait
until the swelling goes down.

Do you have
an adult family member at home?

I need someone who can sign
these authorization forms for me.

- [high-pitched ringing]
- [Álvarez] It's very important.

[muffled] Do you have a relative
who can come in?

[dog barking in distance]

[car door closes]

[Magda] They let you out?

How are you? Are you okay?

Because I knew you'd be here.

[tender music playing]

I have to go.

I left my dad alone.

[Hipólito] Wait.

You keep running away.

He's waiting. I really gotta go.

Magda.

[Daniel] Magda!

Was that your first kiss?

It was mine too.

[Daniel] Magda!

[Hipólito laughs]

and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

- [man, in English] Long live Pastor Cruz!
- [man ] Amen!

Did you know?

No pain can enter
into a heart that worships Christ.

[congregation] Amen!

Let's take a moment
before we read the gospel

to pray together for the quick recovery
of our brother Carlos Ramírez.

- [scoffs]
- [pastor] And for his beautiful family.

For Ángelo.

We've seen grow into a man.

For the beloved Camila.

I know he hasn't been here
in quite a long time.

But in the eyes of the Lord,
all of us are brothers.

[indistinct chatter]

- Hello.
- Hi, Magda. How are you?

Good. And you?

- [Marie] Good.
- [Wagner] Pull the thread, bend the ball.

[Tuka] Hey, Magda.

[Wagner] Oh yeah. It's no big deal.

Are you upset?

No.

Your dad left right after Father O'Higgins
asked us to pray for Carlos Ramírez.

He can't even hear his name.

Wasn't he the assh*le watching
your brother the day he went missing?

I've heard he goes
to the caves to look for him.

But he wasn't the one
who organized the trip.

He didn't tell Santos
to wander off on his own.

Yeah, but he was in charge.

So it's basically his fault.

I'm worried about
what Ángelo will do to us now.

[Jodie] Unfortunately, Ángelo wasn't
in the truck with his dad.

- Jodie!
- [Tuka] Jodie!

[Wagner] Oh man. I'm so glad you're okay.

You're famous, you know?

No, seriously.

How did you survive that
without a scratch?

[Tuka] I think it was a miracle.

"Chaneque," as we would say
in my language.

The miracle is that Jesus
helped us get our revenge on Ángelo.

[Marie] You shouldn't be joking
about that.

That family is going
through a very hard time right now.

Jodie was very lucky.

There must have been a ditch there, or...

I didn't see any ditches.

Even though you didn't see a ditch,
that doesn't mean it wasn't there.

Am I right? Yeah?

[eerie music playing]

How are you feeling?

Fine, I guess.

Do you remember
what I told you about your father?

He d*ed before I was born.

That his family is full of bad people.

What do you mean by "bad"?
Like, criminals, or...

[Marie] Powerful people.

People that have the means

to take you away from me.

I can't think of anything more horrible.

[sighs] We used to move around a lot
when you were younger.

Before we came here.

No, please. Please, I don't wanna go.

I don't want that either.

But we have to be careful.

People are gonna be so interested in you.

We don't need that kind of attention.

So if you see or hear anything
that feels strange, different,

I need you to come and talk to me.

Why do you say that?

Jodie, people are always
gonna be looking for us.

I know it might sound paranoid.

I'm not.

What does the Bible say
about those who rat on friends, Tuka?

Well, nothing. Or,
according to Father O'Higgins, everything.

What else did Jesus do?

Well, mm, he cured the lepers.

Mm, the blind.

He turned water into wine.

Mm, he also brought deers to Belar.

Mm. He invited the oldest coyote to Pasco.

Think you're mixing religions.

It's all the same. Only the names change.

[door creaks open]

- [sighs] We did it.
- [Wagner] Sold out?

Yeah. We just sold out of everything.

We don't have a leper,
but it looks like we have a blind man.

- [friends] Ah!
- Hey!

Hey! Hey!

[Wagner] We're gonna make
a fortune with this.

Can you imagine?

[Hipólito] Ladies and gentlemen,

this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Something never seen before.

So please keep quiet
and pay close attention.

[brother] W, K, Z...

- You got this. You got this.
- A, W... K...

Okay. Tuka, take him out.

- Welcome, one and all!
- [applause]

[cheering]

As you already know,
Jodie is the Miracle Boy of Santa Rosalía.

Today, in front of your very eyes,

you will see something spectacular.

MIRACLE HEALING

Supernatural.

Miraculous.

Let's put our hands together for Jodie!

[crowd cheering]

Everyone knows my brother Erik
is as blind as a bat.

He's spent his whole life living
in a deep...

Huh?

...dark hole of darkness... with no light.

But today, Jodie will cure his blindness.

He'll bring in the light
so he'll see again!

Jodie.

[speaking in tongues]

[Elvis stifles laughter]

[girl gasps]

My vision's perfect.

Erik, tell us, what letters do you see?

[Erik] I see...

A,

K,

W...

I'm sorry. Q.

Z. No, Q.

Yeah, Z. A, K, W, Z.

- [Wagner] A round of applause!
- [crowd cheering]

Whoa!

[Wagner] We did it!

Thank you so much for coming.

You've just experienced
the Miracle Boy, Jodie!

- [boy] Eh.
- [boy ] Huh?

Hey. Come on, buddy. They're free.

COME SEE THE MIRACLE BOY!

[tense music playing]

[gate squeaks open]

[high-pitched ringing]

[dog barking outside]

[fence rattles]

[footsteps approaching]

Show yourself!

[music fades]

Good morning, ma'am.

[splutters] Sorry.
I didn't mean to scare you.

The door was open,
and I can't hear too well.

I'm Guillermo.

I work at the quarry
where your son had the accident.

May I, ma'am?

[Marie] Sure.

- [rooster crows]
- [sighs]

My mother made this... for your son.

For both of you.

[softly] Yeah.

That accident with your son,
what happened was a miracle.

[tense music resumes]

[man] Thank you, ma'am.
Thank you. Have a good day.

You too.

[tense music swells]

Wake up. Drill.

Wake up! Wake up!

Drill. Go! Go, go, go, go!

I'll meet you there. Hurry, Jodie!

[unsettling echoing]

[wind whistling]

[Marie] Jodie!

We have to be better.

Mom, I hate this.

Always preparing for the end of the world.

[Marie] You know why we do this.

I don't want to leave.

[sighs] I know you don't.

And hopefully, we never have to.

All I want is for you
to have a sense of normalcy.

- You call this normal?
- No. This? No.

But this is necessary.

If we're not prepared,
you don't get to stay here.

[Jodie] Look at us!

We're such freaks.

Who has a hideout with money and fake IDs?

I don't wanna do this anymore.

I hate your damn drills.

No more drills!

[gull calling in distance]

What's wrong?

I should already be dead.

Meanwhile, Ángelo's dad is still
in a coma, and I'm just...

No, don't say that.

[tender music playing]

What?

What?

You're making me nervous.

I remember when the truck was flying
at me, my biggest regret was...

it was...

Can I be honest?

Jodie, you can tell me anything.

You're like my brother.

Just how much I love you and our friends.

[Hipólito] What's wrong?

[Magda] Nothing. Why?

You didn't like the kiss, right?

No, it's not that.

It was good.

So?

[Magda] I don't know.
I don't want things to change.

I feel like it could make things weird.

But you wanna be my girl?

I think you're moving too fast, Hipólito.

Do you like Jodie?

[sighs] This isn't a competition,
like who can spit the farthest.

[kids laughing]

Okay. I'm not gonna rush you.

But you did like it, right?

Let's turn water into... wine.

We can't keep lying like this.

- Seriously.
- Well, magic isn't lying. It's art.

Remember the red water
from the salt flats?

If we mix the salt with bacteria
in the water, it will turn red.

And, ta-da, wine.

I'm out.

What's your problem?

Don't be like that.

Jodie, you have to do this, man.

[Magda] Jodie, it's a miracle
you're alive.

And you're wasting your time
on scams and tricks?

Magda, it's only just a magic trick.

Chill out. All right?

Magda!

Don't worry, man. She'll come around.

[Wagner] The show must go on, as they say.

And so, please, Tuka, do me the honor
of counting when I pour in the salt.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four. Five. Six.

[Hipólito and Tuka] Seven. Eight.

Nine. Ten.

Eleven. Twelve.

Thirteen. Fourteen. Fifteen.

[Wagner] Look. That's magic.

- Adults.
- What?

We better wait till they go.

They're not gonna leave. Let's go.

- Really?
