[narrator announcing title]

It was early morning

and Thomas and his friends were just waking up...

when Sir Topham Hatt came to see them.

-[door closes]-I want you all to be

on your very bestbehavior today.

A V.I.P. is comingto the island.

What's a v-eyed-pea?

A V.I.P. means a veryimportant passenger, Percy.

That's right, Thomas,and this V.I.P.

is a deputy ministerwho is presenting me

with an award for...[clears throat]

"Services to Transport"!

-[cheering and whistling]-[Thomas] Well done, Sir!

Perhaps you would like meto collect this minister, Sir?

I'm sorry, Gordon, but Spenceris already bringing him.

Spencer?!

Oh, I might've known!

[train chugging]

I'll have you thereahead of schedule, sir!

I do know how important it isto be on time!

Thank you, Spencer.

Just keep your eyeson the tracks, please.

[whistle blows]

Oh! My hat!

My hat!

[narrator] Spencer was going so fast

trying to get the minister to the station on time...

-Out of the way, slow coach!-[brakes screech]

[narrator] ...he forgot to pay attention

to any of the signals!

Oh, such a show-off!

[narrator] At Wellsworth Junction,

the signalman had set the points

to send Edward along the Branch Line.

But Spencer arrived first,

so Spencer was sent off on to the Branch Line by mistake!

[elephants trumpet]

[animals chitter]

Shouldn't we have reachedKnapford by now, Spencer?

Perhaps I should put onmore speed, sir?

[narrator] But Spencer was no longer

on the main line to Knapford.

Spencer was on the branch line that led to...

the Clay Pits!

But... how did I...?

Hello, Spencer!

What are you doing here?

I don't know.There's been some mistake.

Uh, sorry, sir,but we seem to have ended up

on the wrong line.

[Bill and Ben laugh]

[Bill]Don't you want to take someclay cars with you, Spencer?!

[laughter]

[Ben]That would be Really Useful!

[laughter]

[narrator] By the time Spencer finally arrived at Knapford,

he was very late indeed.

I came here to present youwith a transport award,

Sir Topham Hatt,

but I'm not very impressedwith my transportation so far!

And I will not travel back tothe Mainland with this engine!

-[train whistles]-Not to worry.

I can take you backto the Mainland, sir.

Thank you, Gordon,

but I'll decide who's takingthe Minister back

at the end of the day.

[train whistles]

Maybe I'll be the one who takes

-the Deputy Minister back.-[train whistles]

You'll be lucky.

Surely, Sir Topham Hattwill pick me!

Nonsense. You're bothmuch too slow!

[whistles blow]

[both] We can gojust as fast as you!

[trains whistle]

[narrator] That day, all the engines hurried about their work,

trying to show how quick they could be.

-[cow moos] -They all wanted to be chosen

to take the Deputy Minister back to the mainland.

Spencer watched the other engines rush about.

He was feeling very sorry for himself.

If only I hadn't beenin such a hurry!

If only I had tried to getmy job done properly

without showing off!

[narrator] But it was the other engines

who were showing off now!

[laughs] Wellsworth Station!

Right on time!

[brakes screech]

[passengers]Whoa! Ooh! Oh, my! Ooh!

[laughs] Oh, James!

Your poor passengers!

You mustn't stop so quickly!

Well, at least my passengers

can step onto the platform,Gordon.

[sighing] Oh...

[narrator] By trying so hard to be fast,

the engines were causing confusion and delay!

[brakes screech]

Oliver! What are you doingon my track?

Your track?Who says this is your track?

There are two waysof doing things, Oliver.

The Great Western Way and...

The Wrong Way! I know.

And you're doing itthe wrong way!

-[trains beep]-[narrator] All the engines were making silly mistakes,

but Thomas' mistakes were the silliest of all!

[train whistles]

Thomas! What are you doing?!

Coaches d-don't need coal!

Sorry!

[narrator] At the end of the day,

Sir Topham Hatt was very disappointed with his engines.

Everyone makes mistakes ...

But when you are showing offand in a hurry ,

you make far more mistakesthan usual!

And you have all beenshowing off!

I don't think any of theseengines deserve

to take you hometo the Mainland, sir.

Perhaps I can lend you my car...

Oh, the indignity!

Perhaps you'd let me take

the Deputy Minister homeafter all.

You, Spencer?

I can learn frommy mistakes, Sir.

I just need to be givenone more chance!

Spencer is right!

Everyone deservesa second chance.

I will forgetwhat happened today...

and maybe tomorrow,

I can come back and see

how the railwayreally runs on Sodor!

-Yes, sir!-Thank you, sir!

[whistles blow]

[train whistles]

[engine chugs]

[narrator] So, the next day,

the Deputy Minister did come back...

and all of Sir Topham Hatt's engines

showed him just how well their railway could be run!

[train whistles]

Excellent, Sir Topham Hatt.

You run a very finerailway indeed.

I told you they wereReally Useful Engines.

[engines cheer]Hooray! Hooray!

[train whistles]
