[upbeat pop music]

[children] ♪ They'’re two, they'’re four ♪

♪ They'’re six, they'’re eight ♪

♪ Shunting trucks and hauling freight ♪

♪ Red and green and brown and blue ♪

♪ They'’re the really useful crew ♪

♪ All with different roles to play ♪

♪ Round Tidmouth Sheds or far away ♪

♪ Down the hills and round the bends ♪

♪ Thomas and his friends

[whistle toots]

[male narrator] "Diesel'’s Ghostly Christmas: Part One."

Christmas is the busiest time of the year

for the engines of Sodor.

There are more passengers and more deliveries

than at any other time of the year.

[bell dinging]

[train engine chugging]

[whistles tooting]

[choir] ♪ Glory to the newborn king

Merry Christmas, Thomas.

All ready for the earl'’s grand Christmas lunch tomorrow?

Not yet, Edward.

I'’ve got to take these singers to their rehearsal

and then pull all those cars up to the castle.

[laughs] You are busy, Thomas.

[grunts]

Oh, dear.

Hello, sir. Merry Christmas.

I'’m afraid I'’m not feeling very merry

at the moment, Thomas.

I'’m supposed to be at Brendham Docks,

but I twisted my ankle, so I can'’t drive.

Oh, would you be able to take me instead?

Oh, I'’d love to help, sir,

but I'’ve got to take the singers to their rehearsal

and then cars up to--

Oh, well. Don'’t mind me, then.

But if one of my friends can help me, sir,

I'’m sure that I can help you.

[whistle toots]

[stammering] Oh!

[whistle toots]

[whistle blows]

Merry Christmas, Diesel!

Ha! What reason have we to be merry?

I was wondering if you'’d help me.

No, Thomas.

I can'’t help you. I'’m busy.

[sighs] Diesel is about as helpful as a...

chocolate firebox.

[laughs]

♪ Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la ♪

Emily! [whistle toots]

[narrator] Luckily, Emily was happy to help Thomas,

so he was able to take

Sir Topham Hatt to Brendham Docks.

[Cranky] Hurry up with that flatbed, Salty.

These chains are coming loose!

Arr, my fuel line is frozen.

I can'’t make it to you in time!

Whoa!

Diesel, help me!

You need to push that flatbed onto these tracks!

I don'’t need to do anything.

I'’ve got enough jobs to do without helping you do yours.

[engine roars]

Whoa!

[rope snaps]

Arr, shiver me timbers!

The tree!

Arr.

[tree crashes]

Whoops.

If you'’d been bothered to help, Diesel,

this never would have happened.

That'’s not my problem.

But, Diesel... [splutters]

Christmas is a time for goodwill.

[scoffs] Bah, humbug.

[train engine chugging]

Hmm...

[narrator] At last, the huge Christmas tree

was loaded onto a flatbed for Paxton to deliver to Ulfstead Castle.

[horn honks]

[steam hisses]

[grunts] Oh, that'’s a big '’un.

I think I may need some help.

[horn honks]

Oh, maybe Diesel could help you.

He doesn'’t have any more cars.

Ugh, I told you I'’m busy.

Ugh, Diesel.

[narrator] Paxton set off for the castle.

But the huge tree was rolling around so much,

the chains were coming loose.

And with no back engine to see what was happening,

there was nobody to warn Paxton.

[chain snaps]

[screaming]

Ow.

[laughter]

-Merry Christmas! -Merry Christmas!

Bah, humbug.

Diesel, you came to help after all.

No, I didn'’t.

One of those other engines that likes being helpful

will be along soon enough.

But... but...

Huh.

[whistle toots]

Paxton, are you okay?

Yes, I'’m fine.

Just a little bit off the tracks, that'’s all.

Those tracks look like they'’ll need some repairs.

But was that Diesel who just went by?

Yes, but I think Diesel must be very busy today, Thomas.

I'’d like to find a way to teach that unhelpful Diesel

just what being helpful is all about.

[narrator] That evening, when Diesel returned,

he found the diesel works mysteriously deserted.

Hello! Hello?

Oh, where is everybody?

[train engine chugging]

[laughs nervously]

Uh, okay. You can stop messing around now.

[yelps] What'’s that?

-[chains rattling] -[eerie wailing]

[yelps] Who'’s there?

-[eerie wailing] -[yelps]

I'’m Emily'’s ghost, and I'’m here to warn you

to stop being such an unhelpful engine.

I think we need more steam.

[steam hissing]

[stuttering] Just go away!

You shall be visited

by three more ghosts before Christmas.

[eerie wailing]

Sir Topham Hatt

said he needs you to go to the docks tonight,

or you'’ll be in big trouble.

B-big trouble?

[Emily giggles]

This plan of yours is great fun, Thomas.

[giggles]

[narrator] Diesel raced quickly into the docks.

He had been scared by the ghost

and didn'’t like the sound of being in even more trouble.

S-S-Sir? Are you here, sir?

-[snoring] -[gasps]

Cranky? Was that you?

[snoring]

[gulps]

[eerie moaning]

[whimpers]

[snoring]

[eerie moaning]

[Salty] I am the ghost of Christmas past.

I, uh... I should go.

I think Thomas needs my... my help at the shunting yard.

-[cackles] -[gasps]

[horn bellows]

You? Help Thomas?

When was the last time you helped someone, Diesel?

[stammering] Well...

Ha-ha-ha-arr.

Let'’s go back and see, shall we?

[eerie moaning]

Ha-ha-ha-arr!

You weren'’t helpful that time

you pushed those cars into the sea, were you?

And you weren'’t helpful

when you spilled milk on Sir Topham Hatt either.

And you definitely were not helpful

when you refused to move the flatbed yesterday.

Poor old Salty.

Poor old Salty.

[screams]

Ha-ha-ha-arr.

So how did poor old Salty do?

[eerie moan]

-Spooky! -Arr. [laughs]

Spooky, indeed.

[whistle toots]

[upbeat pop music]

[children singing]

[whistle toots]
