BUS DRIVER BOB: Coming up next on "Betsy's

Kindergarten Adventures."

-It's the greatest toy ever made.

-This is our last Sandy Play Set.

We apologize, but this is all we have.

-I think it's about time you were

introduced to our classroom visitors.

[CHILDREN GASPING]

[THEME MUSIC]

THEME SONG: A B C and .

It's kindergarten time for you and me.

So climb aboard, and take a seat for kindergarten fun

with Betsy.

We'll meet new friends along the way

and have adventures everyday.

It's Betsy's Kindergarten Adventures.

[BABY SQUEALING]

[RINGING]

BETSY: The day was finally here, and I was so excited.

Today was Thursday, and Thursday was the day that the Super Fun

Sandy Mega Play Set was finally going on sale in stores.

All the toys that I'd ever wanted, this one

was by far the one that me and Sandy needed the most.

Sandy, tonight you'll have an entire house to play in.

Tonight you'll have tea in your very own dining room

with your very own super fun Sandy china.

[CRYING]

-Now, Kevin, you can play the Teddy,

but first you need to finish your breakfast.

-Good morning, Mom.

-Good morning, Betsy.

-What's the matter with Kevin?

-Oh, Kevin is upset that I'm making him eat his breakfast

before he can play with Teddy.

Kevin needs to understand that he has to finish his work

before he gets the reward of playtime.

-It's OK, Kevin.

Just have a few more bites, and you'll

be playing with Teddy in no time.

Mom, what does "quantities limited" mean?

-I see you're still excited about that new toy.

Quantities limited means they only have so many.

It's a very popular toy.

-I understand why.

It's the greatest toy ever made.

-Well, I don't know about that.

But I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

We'll go to the toy store right after dinner tonight.

Sound good?

-Sounds great, Mom.

-Great.

Now finish your breakfast.

The bus will be here any minute.

-OK, Mom.

-Is everyone ready for today?

-Am I ready?

It so happens that my Aunt Gertrude is waiting in line

as we speak for my Super Fun Sandy Mega Play Set.

And Aunt Gertrude always delivers.

-I'm ready, too.

My mother's going to the toy store around lunch time today.

She said that at lunch time, everyone will be hungry

and the lines at the toy store will be smaller.

Who's waiting in line for you, Betsy?

-Waiting in line?

-Huh?

[GASPING]

You do have someone waiting in line for you, don't you, Betsy?

-No.

Me and my mom were going to go to the mall after dinner.

[GASPING]

-After dinner?

-After dinner?

This is horrible.

Betsy, there aren't going to be any available after dinner.

-How do you know?

-Betsy, the Super Fun Sandy Mega Play Set

is only available in limited quantities.

-I know.

-They go on sale at : in the morning.

-That is one hour from now.

-After dinner is around : P.M..

That's-- uh, one, two, three, four--

-That's ten hours from now.

-That is ten hours of shopper buying Super Fun Sandy Mega

Play Sets before you even get there.

-Oh, no.

What should I do?

-I don't know.

-OK, class, time for morning circle.

Today we have a very important lesson.

Today I'm going to teach you about homework.

[GASPING]

-Homework?

Uh oh.

Oh, no.

[LAUGHING]

-Obviously some of you have older brothers and sisters,

and I'm afraid they might have given homework a bad name.

Think of it like this-- how many of you like to learn?

-Oh, me.

-I do.

-I like to learn.

-I do!

-Great.

Now do you only learn in school?

Yes, Billy?

-I learned about earth worms the other day

from a man in the pet store.

-I learned about the ballet by going to see a performance.

-See, class?

Learning continues far beyond school hours and the classroom.

In order to learn your subjects, you

need to practice them at home.

So each night, you will get a homework assignment

that you need to complete by the following day.

-But what about playtime, Mrs. O'Connor?

-Playtime is important, too.

That's why I've thought up a few rules that will help you

do your homework every night and still have time to play.

Homework rule number one-- keep a list of homework assignments.

Homework rule number two-- as soon as you get home,

show your homework list to your parents.

Homework rule number three-- don't

wait until too late to do your homework.

School's not over until your homework

assignments are complete.

Homework rule number four-- do your best on every assignment

and ask for help if you need it.

Homework rule number five-- as soon as your homework is

complete, place it in your school bag.

This way nothing unexpected happens to it,

and it doesn't get lost.

And finally, homework rule number six-- put your book bag

in the same place every day so you

always remember it in the morning.

There you have them-- the six homework rules.

Now I need a volunteer to help me hand out

tonight's homework assignments.

-Oh, I will!

-Me!

-I'll do it.

BETSY: The little hand was on the one,

and the big hand was on the six, which meant that it was :.

That meant that Super Fun Sandy Mega Play Set had been selling

for-- one, two, three and / hours.

-Betsy, Newton and I are going to ride our bikes

after we finish our homework tonight.

You want to come?

-Today?

Oh, no, thanks.

I can't.

-Why not, Betsy?

-Because Super Fun Sandy Mega Play Set goes on sale today,

and I have to go to the toy store

as soon as I get out of school so I can get one.

-Super Fun Sandy?

But that's a girl's toy.

-Betsy is a girl, Billy.

-Oh, yeah.

But what about your homework?

-Yeah.

You have to finish your homework before you can go to the store.

-Really?

-Homework rule number three, Betsy--

don't want until too late to do your homework.

Do it before dinner before you start to get tired.

Keep playtime for after you finish.

-That's right.

Oh, no.

What was I going to do?

This was my first homework assignment.

I had to do a good job.

Somehow I had to finish my homework

and get to the toy store on time to keep my promise to Sandy.

[BABBLING]

Mom!

Mom, Mom, Mom!

Quick!

Look at my homework list.

I'm going to get started, and then we

can go and get Super Fun Sandy her Mega Play Set.

-OK, OK.

But like I said, we have to go after dinner.

-But Mom, they'll be gone after dinner.

-I'm sorry, sweetie.

But I have things to do around the house,

and I can't leave until then.

Why don't you go and get started on your homework,

and I'll keep doing my chores.

The quicker we get started, the quicker we'll get finished.

BETSY: Little hand on the four, big hand on the six.

:.

Now all I need to do was finish my homework.

[GROWLING]

Gracie, how am I supposed to do my homework

with you running around?

[WHINING]

I'll just go in the other room.

Almost done.

[SCREAMING]

-Yeah!

I go the Super Fun Sandy Play Set!

I got it!

-Huh?

Oh.

GIRL: I got it.

I got it!

-Oh, no.

MOTHER: Betsy, dinner is ready.

-Huh?

I'm almost finished, Mom.

I still have one thing to do.

-Wow, Betsy, I didn't think you had that much homework.

-I don't.

All I can think about is my Super Fun Sandy Play Set.

-Well, why don't you eat your dinner,

and we'll go to the stores right when you're done?

-But I won't be done with my homework.

-That's very responsible of you, Betsy.

I'll leave it up to you.

-Thanks, Mom.

-Now eat your dinner.

[BABBLING]

-What do I do, Kevin?

Even I get the Super Fun Sandy Play Set,

I don't know if I'll be able to concentrate then.

Even you put aside your favorite Teddy bear to eat your dinner.

Hm.

-OK, sweetie.

Dishes are done, and I'm all ready to go.

-Mom, I've decided to stay and finish my work.

Sandy will have to wait a little longer for her play set.

-Betsy, that's very responsible of you.

How much time do you need?

-Not too long.

-Well, just let me know when you're ready.

-OK.

OK, Mom.

I'm all ready.

[LAUGHING]

-Hey, this is incredible!

I got my Super Fun Sandy!

I got one!

-Mom, thank you so much for taking me here.

I just can't wait to play with my Super

Fun Sandy Mega Play Set.

-Attention, everyone.

This is our last Sandy Play Set.

We apologize, but this is all we have.

-Are you sure that's all you have?

-Yeah.

That's the last one.

-Well, do you know when you'll get more in?

-Probably, like, not for a few months.

This is, like, the most popular toy all year.

-Oh, Betsy.

I'm so sorry.

-The worst part was telling Sandy.

Sandy, I hope you won't be mad, but I

didn't get you your Mega Play Set like I promised.

I have a good reason, though.

I needed to finish my homework.

I tried to get you your play set,

but there were none left at the store.

I'm sorry, Sandy.

FATHER: Betsy!

-Dad?

FATHER: Can you come down here for a second?

-Sure, Dad.

I'll be right back in a second, Sandy.

-Pilot to co-pilot-- how are you feeling?

Over.

-Co-pilot to pilot-- not so great.

Over.

-Well, co-pilot, I happened to be returning from Miami today

and past a toy store in the airport.

I remembered you saying something about a Super

Fun Sandy Ultimate Play Set thing.

-Thank you!

Thank you!

Thank you!

Thank you!

-I told your father what a responsible student you were

today, finishing your homework before you'd go anywhere.

-This is our way of saying we're proud of you, Betsy.

-Thanks, Mom.

Thanks, Dad.

[SQUEALING]

Thanks, Kevin.

[LAUGHING]

[MUSIC PLAYING]

BETSY: One of the things I really like about kindergarten

is that you never know what to expect each day.

Weekends are fun, but I like school better.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

[SQUEALING]

[HUMMING]

[GASPING]

-Oh!

Will you look at that?

-What is it, Mom?

-You'll see.

Now look over there where the roof

hangs down over the window.

BETSY: Birds!

Baby birds.

MOTHER: That's right.

Isn't that something?

-It sure is.

They're so cute.

[FLAPPING]

Ooh, that must be the mother bird.

-I think so, too.

[YAWNING]

[MEOWING]

-Oh, no, you don't, you naughty cat.

You leave those birds alone.

[MEOWING]

-You don't think Kitty would hurt the baby birds, do you?

-Don't worry, Betsy.

Mother bird built her nest nice and high.

There is no way Kitty can get at her babies.

[SIGHING]

-Thank goodness.

-Good morning, everyone.

-Good morning, Bus Driver Bob.

-Bus Driver Bob, guess what!

We have a bird's nest with three baby birds at our house.

-Wow.

I'll trade you.

I have a family of skunks living in my tool shed.

-Oh, dear.

-I haven't been able to get to my lawn mower in two months.

My front yard looks like a jungle.

[LAUGHING]

The neighbors want to have my yard

made into a wild animal park.

-I'm sure everything will work out, Bus Driver Bob.

[SIGHING]

-I sure hope so.

-Have a good day at school, Betsy.

-I will.

Bye, Mom.

Bye, Kevin.

[SQUEALING]

-See you later.

-So long, Bus Driver Bob.

-Bye bye now.

-So long.

Have a great day.

-Ah, Bus Driver Bob, just the man I'm looking for.

-What can I do for you, Principal Warner?

-A package arrived for Mrs. O'Connor,

and I was wondering if you could help

me bring it over to her classroom.

-I'd be happy to.

-I knew I could count on you.

-OK, everyone, time to gather around for morning circle time.

Good morning, everyone.

-Good morning, Mrs. O'Connor.

-Today we're going to be welcoming

some brand new visitors to our classroom.

-Oh!

That sounds good.

-Good morning, Mrs. O'Connor.

Good morning, children.

-Good morning, Principal Warner.

-Excuse me, Principal Warner, but weren't you

supposed to be bringing something?

-Huh?

Bringing something?

Oh, of course.

Of course.

How silly of me.

Come along, Bob.

Don't dawdle.

-Coming, sir.

-That's it.

Take it easy.

Right this way.

[GROANING]

You're doing fine.

Keep coming.

Hold it right there, Bob.

-Yes, sir.

-Where would you like us to put this, Mrs. O'Connor?

[GROANING]

-Uh, right over here, please.

That is, if it's no trouble.

-Why, it's no trouble.

No trouble at all.

This way, Bob.

-Yes, sir.

PRINCIPAL WARNER: Remember, lift with your knees.

That's it.

[GROANING]

Easy.

Easy.

Easy.

Don't drop it.

Easy.

[GROANING]

-Perfect.

-Thank you both so very much.

-Think nothing of it, Mrs. O'Connor.

It was no trouble-- no trouble at all.

Aye, Bob?

-No, sir.

No trouble at all.

-Just goes to show you what you can

accomplish with a little teamwork..

-Well, I think it's about time you were

introduced to our classroom visitors.

-Flowers?

-Ohh.

-What is it?

MRS. O'CONNOR: Yes, Newton?

-Uh, Mrs. O'Connor, I don't see anything in there.

Well, except for some tree branches.

MRS. O'CONNOR: Oh, there's something else in there.

Who would like to come up for a closer look?

OK, Billy and Betsy.

Come take a look.

Can you tell me who our classroom visitors are?

-I know, Mrs. O'Connor.

I know who our visitors are.

-Billy, what do you see?

-OK, Billy, show us.

-Our visitors are right here on this leaf-- caterpillar eggs.

Our special visitors are caterpillars.

In fact, some of them have hatched already.

-He's right.

I see them, too.

[CHILDREN GASPING]

MRS. O'CONNOR: Good job, Billy.

Those little dots are caterpillar eggs.

A butterfly can lay as many as eggs on plant leaves

and stems.

[CHILDREN GASPING]

When the eggs hatch, the caterpillar-- or larva--

eats its egg shell and then goes on to eat lots of leaves.

-Now this was exciting.

I couldn't wait to tell my mom all about the caterpillars.

[SNORING]

School was so much fun today.

Mrs. O'Connor had a big glass t*nk full of caterpillars.

And guess what!

They're all going to change into butterflies.

-Oh, my!

Well, I had some excitement today, too.

Look at this.

-Oh, my goodness.

MOTHER: One of the little birds tried to fly this afternoon.

It was a good thing Kevin and I were

in the backyard instead of Kitty.

-Is he hurt?

MOTHER: Well, the veterinarian said he sprained his wing.

We'll have to take care of him for a few weeks

until he's well enough to fly on his own.

Do you want to help me take care of him?

-Oh, boy!

It was fun helping my mom take care of the little bird.

It was fun at school watching the caterpillars, too.

They were growing fast.

Then, one day, Molly saw something really exciting.

[SCREAMING]

-Mrs. O'Connor!

Mrs. O'Connor!

-What is it, Molly?

-This caterpillar ate so much, he exploded!

-No, Molly, he didn't explode.

Each time a caterpillar grows, it needs to shed its skin.

That's how they get bigger.

-The caterpillar t*nk was now full of very fat caterpillars.

Mrs. O'Connor said they needed to eat a lot

in order to change into butterflies.

The caterpillars weren't the only ones

who were always hungry.

So was Mister Tweets.

That was what I named my bird.

By now, Mister Tweets was feeling much better.

He'd hop around on my desk, and he was really cute.

He didn't have to be fed with the eye dropper anymore.

And he really liked the bird seed that I fed him.

Every once in a while he would try to fly,

but he didn't do very well.

-How's Mister Tweets doing?

-A little better.

He tried to fly again, but he's still pretty weak.

-Well, I'm sure it won't be long before he's

strong enough for us to let him go.

-Let him go?

-Of course, Betsy.

Once he's healthy, we have to let him go.

-(VOICEOVER) Let him go?

I hadn't thought about that.

I didn't want to let him go.

The next day at school, Scott and Maria

were looking inside the terrarium

when they noticed something fantastic was happening.

-Hey, where did all these caterpillars go?

-I think I know, Mrs. O'Connor.

Look.

-It looks like our caterpillars have

entered a new stage of development.

First they were--

-Oh!

Oh!

Oh!

Eggs.

MRS. O'CONNOR: Then they became--

-Caterpillars.

-And now it looks like they stopped growing as caterpillars

and have become pupas.

-Pupas?

-That's right.

When the caterpillar sheds its skin for the last time,

it becomes a pupa.

The pupa stays in a hard shell called a chrysalis.

-I see them.

MRS. O'CONNOR: That's right, Scott.

Inside the chrysalis, the pupa is changing from a caterpillar

into a butterfly.

-Wow!

-It's funny not to see all those caterpillars anymore.

I kind of miss them.

-I know what you mean.

It looks kind of lonely in there.

-Yeah.

-(VOICEOVER) As much as I was missing all the caterpillars,

the idea of saying goodbye to Mister

Tweets really made me sad.

No.

Mister Tweets, stop flying.

You need your rest.

-Well, it looks like Mister Tweets

has made a full recovery.

-Uh, I don't think so.

I think he still needs more rest.

-Oh?

He sure looks recovered to me.

-Mom?

I was thinking-- maybe Mister Tweets could stay here.

We could get him a nice bird cage, and he could be our bird.

[SIGHING]

-Well, I don't know.

Do you think that would be right?

Mister Tweets is a wild bird.

His whole family lives outside.

Don't you think he misses his mother and his brothers?

-I never thought about it that way.

-Well, what do you think we should do?

[SIGHING]

-I think we should set him free.

It's the right thing to do.

-I think so, too.

Good night, you two.

[SIGHING]

-Good night, Mister Tweets.

[TWEETING]

[GASPING]

CHILDREN: Wow!

-My goodness.

Look at all the butterflies.

-What are we going to do with them?

-Are they our new class pets?

You know, like Sidney?

-I think that we should all get some to take home with us.

Um, let me see, please.

I will have that one, that one-- ooh, that one.

Yes, and that one.

-No way.

We should just let them fly around inside the classroom.

[LAUGHING]

-That would be awesome.

-Yeah!

[CHILDREN TALKING]

-Excuse me.

I think we should set them free.

-Why do you say that, Betsy?

-Because-- because it's the right thing to do.

-Yeah, Betsy's right.

-Definitely.

-I'm going to miss them.

-Set them free.

-Oh, I suppose.

-Then it's settled.

We'll set them free.

-Yay!

-Later!

-Goodbye!

-Bye bye!

-See you later!

BETSY: It was so beautiful to see

all our butterflies flying off.

I sure hope they're happy.

-Are you ready, Betsy?

-Uh-huh.

Goodbye, Mister Tweets.

Be happy.

[BABBLING]

[HUMMING]

[SIGHING]

-Oh, dear.

Well!

Will you look at that?

You are the prettiest little things I have ever seen.

[GASPING]

Skunks!

Shoo!

Go away!

Leave me alone!

Keep away from me!

Go home!

MRS. O'CONNOR: Visit the "Betsy's Kindergarten

Adventures" website, and see how Betsy's getting

ready for school, play games, color pictures,

and meet all of Betsy's friends at pbskids.org.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

BETSY: My friends and I love to read.

You can find all kinds of fun and interesting books

to read at your local library.

Visit the library in your town today

to have your own adventures, just like me.

[LAUGHING]

-Of course, garbage will have to be

taken out by somebody strong.

BILLY: When someone gives you a responsibility,

you should always do your very best.

MRS. O'CONNOR: How about Billy?

-All right!

I get to take out the garbage!
