[train passing] [car honks]

ALMA: Your turn, Junior.

ANDREÉ: Oh, Junior!

If you move diagonally, like this,

you can jump over Alma'’s checker and capture it.

JUNIOR: Yeah, yeah!

JUNIOR: Thanks, André!

ALMA: I'’m good at checkers,

but André is AH-MAY-ZING.

ALMA: Oooh! Sweet moves!

ANDREÉ: Now whaddya say, Junior?

JUNIOR: KING ME!

JUNIOR: Yes!

ANDREÉ: Nice! Now your king piece

can move backwards andforwards.

JUNIOR: Oh yeah, oh yeah! I won!

ALMA: [giggling] Well, not yet.

The game isn't over

until one player losesall their checkers...

ANDREÉ: Andthenthe other player wins.

JUNIOR: Oh!

MR. RAMIREZ: Got time for a game against me, André?

ANDREÉ: Me? But, Mr. Ramirez, you'’re the Checkers Master of the Bronx.

MR. RAMIREZ: [chuckling] I dunno about the whole Bronx.

C'’mon, show me what you got, kid.

ALMA: This is gonna be sooo good!

ANDREÉ: Hmm...

[♪♪♪]

MR. RAMIREZ: I like to call this move "The Pancake Flip."”

ALMA/JUNIOR: [gasp] Oooh...

ALMA: Whoa, did you see that?!

ANDREÉ: And I call that the "“Bunny Hop!"”

MR. RAMIREZ: Impressive.

[pieces moving]

MR. RAMIREZ: Hmmm... Oh!

ANDREÉ: [gasp]

King me!

JUNIOR: Hey! Mr. Ramirez doesn'’t have any red checkers left on the board.

You won, André!

ALMA: Told you! He'’s ahh-may-zing.

MR. RAMIREZ: Great game! André King, you are a Checkers King!

JUNIOR: He taught me everything I know.

ANDREÉ: It was a blast playing against you, Mr. Ramirez.

MR. RAMIREZ: Thanks!

You should bring your skills to the Checkers Tournament tomorrow.

ANDREÉ: A tournament?

MR. RAMIREZ: [chuckling] Yeah.

A bunch of us will be playing here all day

to see who wins the most games.

We'’re checkers champs just like you.

ANDREÉ: [gasp]

MR. RAMIREZ: You'’ll come, right?

ANDREÉ: I'’m in!

Thanks, Mr. Ramirez!

MR. RAMIREZ: Hasta mañana!

ALMA/JUNIOR/ANDREÉ: Bye! See you later!

ANDREÉ: Checkers... for the whole day!

Whoa, I can'’t wait!

I'’m gonna have to play my best.

Can you help me get ready, Alma?

ALMA: Sure! I'’ll be your Checkers Coach.

JUNIOR: André King, Checkers King!

[giggles]

ALMA: Okay, André. Time to start training.

[♪♪♪]

ALMA: Eleven... twelve...

thirteen...

JUNIOR: Whoa! Your fingers are gonna be so strong!

HOWARD: [chuckles confidently]

[gasp]

ANDREÉ: Sorry, Howard.

HARPER: [gasp]

HARPER/LUCAS: [gasp]

JUNIOR: He just keeps getting better and better!

ALMA: Uh-huh!

RAFIA: What? No way! How did you do that?

JUNIOR: He's... André King, Checkers King!

KIDS: [cheering] Oh yeah!

ALMA: How ya feeling, King?

ANDREÉ: I feel ready!

ALMA: Hey, André!

Are you excited for the tournament?

ANDREÉ: I'’m super psyched to play!

Check it out, I even made my own set.

ALMA: I love it!

ANDREÉ: Thanks! I'’m gonna ask if I can play with mycheckers.

I think the other kids in the tournament will- uh...

ALMA: What'’s up, André?

ANDREÉ: Look!

ANDREÉ: That'’s who I'm playing? Grown-ups?!

MR. RAMIREZ: André! I told everyone you were coming.

They'’re so excited to see your skills. I'’ll show you around.

I made the trophy myself...

And all the checker- themed snacks.

ALMA/ANDREÉ: Whoa!

ANDREÉ: Everything is so, so- so checker-y.

MR. RAMIREZ: Hey! You brought your own set to play on?

Marvelous! You'’ll fit right in!

MR. RAMIREZ: Oh, hey!

ALMA: I think everybody here loves checkers almost as much as you do!

ANDREÉ: Alma, there aren'’t any other kids here!

ALMA: Oh, yeah...

Maybe they're coming later? I'll ask!

ALMA: Excuse me, who else is coming to your tournament, Mr. Ramirez?

Any kids?

MR. RAMIREZ: Nope.

André is the only kid who signed up.

MR. RAMIREZ: Ooh, it looks like everyone'’s here. We'’re ready to play!

C'’mon, André.

ALMA: You coming, André?

ANDREÉ: I thought I'’d be playing kids. I don'’t belong here.

ALMA: What? Why?

ANDREÉ: They'’re all adults. They'’re gonna be way better than me!

So this won'’t be any fun. I'’m gonna bounce.

ALMA: Wait, what?! André?

I don't get it.

André would still have fun playing grown-ups...

Right?

I gotta think about this...

[♪♪♪]

ANDREÉ: Checkers... for the whole day! Whoa, I can'’t wait!

ALMA: André was excited to play in the tournament...

RAFIA: No way! How did you do that?

JUNIOR: He just keeps getting better and better!

ALMA: And he really is good at checkers!

JUNIOR: Mr. Ramirez doesn'’t have any red checkers left on the board.

You won, André!

ANDREÉ: It was a blast playing against you, Mr. Ramirez.

ALMA: And he'’s already played Mr. Ramirez.

He'’sa grown-up.

Wait, that'’s it! I know what to do!

ALMA: André, wait up!

André! I think you should play in the tournament.

ANDREÉ: Why?

ALMA: Because you looove playing checkers...

ANDREÉ: Not against grown-ups. I'’m just a kid!

It won'’t be fun if I lose all day.

ALMA: But you played Mr. Ramirez, and you won against him!

ANDREÉ: Yeah... I did, didn't I?

ALMA: And if you play them, you'’ll just get better and better,

like when you played all the kids.

Win or lose, you'’ll still get to play checkers all day!

ANDREÉ: Yeah! That'’s so true.

ALMA: Andwhydo you think people call you "“the King?"”

ANDREÉ: Because that'’s my last name?

ALMA: Well, besides that...

Because you'’re an amazing checkers player.

You'’re André King, Checkers King, remember?!

ANDREÉ: Okay, okay, you'’re right, Alma. Time to play checkers!

ALMA: YES!

ALMA: You got this, André!

ANDREÉ: Thanks, Alma.

MR. RAMIREZ: Let the Checkers Tournament begin!

[♪♪♪]

[checkers moves]

ANDREÉ: I won!

ALMA: YES! Go, André!

[♪♪♪]

ALMA: Whoa... That was close!

[♪♪♪]

ANDREÉ: Hmm...

[♪♪♪]

ANDREÉ: King me, please!

ALMA: He'’s doing it! He'’s winning!

[music ends]

MR. RAMIREZ: Our very last two players have won five games each.

And now they'’ll face each other in the final game of the tournament.

It'’s André King against...

ALMA: Ooh! This is gonna be so good!

MR. RAMIREZ: André... we meet again. Ready to show me what you got?

ANDREÉ: Yep!

MR. RAMIREZ: I was hoping we could useyourcheckers pieces.

ANDREÉ: [gasp] Mine? Sure!

ALMA: Here we go!

♪]suspenseful music]

[big bite, chewing] [music stops suddenly]

JUNIOR: [swallow] Sorry!

[music starts again]

ALMA: No. Way! Mr. Ramirez used André'’s Bunny Hop move!

ANDREÉ: Nice one!

MR. RAMIREZ: Pancake flip! I like your style.

ALMA: André just used Mr. Ramirez'’s move against him!

ALMA: [gasp] Mr. Ramirez won!

ANDREÉ: [deep breath] Ahh.

Great game, Mr. Ramirez!

ANDREÉ: I guess I'’ll have to callyouthe Checkers King now.

MR. RAMIREZ: I don'’t know... you keep getting better and better...

André King, Checkers King.

ANDREÉ: Thanks. Rematch tomorrow?

MR. RAMIREZ: Sure! If we can play with these pieces of yours.

Hey! Do you think you could make me a set?

ANDREÉ: I'’d be happy to!

That'’s a lot of checker pieces. Can you help me make them, Coach?

ALMA: Sure! Anything for André King, Checkers King!

[flipped peice rings out]

I call that move the Flippy Flip!

[♪♪♪]

ALMA: "“World'’s Greatest"”

RAFIA: I'’m gonna get there first!

ALMA: Not if I do!

ALMA: World's Greatest Climber...

ALMA /RAFIA: GO!

ALMA/RAFIA: [efforts]

RAFIA: Who won?

ALMA: Ooh, that was close but... I think you won, Rafia.

RAFIA: Yes! I'’m the greatest!

ALMA: Oh, this isn'’t over yet!

ALMA: I'’m the World's Greatest Rope Jumper!

RAFIA: Ready?

ALMA: Ready!

RAFIA: GO!

ALMA/RAFIA: [heavy breathing]

ALMA: Woohoo!! World'’s Greatest!

RAFIA: Un-uh! You won this round, but we'’re tied!

ALMA: We need a tiebreaker to see who'’s the...

ALMA/RAFIA: World'’s... Greatest... Everything!!

ALMA/RAFIA: THREE-TWO-ONE GO!!!

ALMA/RAFIA: [heavy breathing] [giggles]

RAFIA: World'’s Greatest Hop-scotcher!

RAFIA: [gasp]

ALMA: Yess! World'’s Greatest Thumb Wrestler!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

[♪♪♪]

ALMA: [gasp] YES! World'’s Greatest Stare-er-er!

RAFIA: This still isn'’t over!

[music fades]

ALMA: Okay, Rafia. We gotta find our next-

RAFIA: Hey!

[water flowing]

RAFIA: Race you to the fountain!

ALMA/RAFIA: [giggles] [heavy breathing]

ALMA/RAFIA: [deep breath]

RAFIA: Woo-hoo! I win! World'’s Greatest Racer!

I'’d like to thank my sister, Safina, for always chasing me.

That'’s how I became the World'’s Greatest Racer!

ALMA/RAFIA: [laughs]

ANDREÉ: Hey, Alma! Hi, Rafia! What'’s up?

RAFIA: Hey, André!

ALMA: Hi André!

ALMA: We'’re competing to see who'’s the...

ALMA/RAFIA: WORLD'’S... GREATEST... EVERYTHING! [laughs]

RAFIA; But, we'’re tied!

ALMA: You wanna play with us?

ANDREÉ: No, thanks. I'’m painting.

ALMA: [Gasps] ♪[uplifting music]

ALMA: Whoa, nice! It looks like the fountain.

ANDREÉ: That'’s because it IS the fountain...

well, it will be when I'’m finished!

ALMA: Wow! Is he good or what?

ANDREÉ: I'’m making it for my mom'’s art show.

ANDREÉ'S MOM, NEA: That'’s right! I'’m putting on a gallery show at my bookstore.

I'’m calling it... "“How I See It!"”

ALMA: How you see... What?

NEA: The fountain! Everyone'’s drawing or painting the fountain,

the way... they... see it! [laughs] Genius, huh?

ALMA: Yeah, but, doesn'’t everyone see it the same way?

RAFIA: It'’s a fountain.

NEA: I hear you, but everyone notices different things about it.

And they draw what they see!

And I can'’t wait to see what everyone else sees.

It'’ll be fabulous!

[smart watch beeps]

NEA: Whoop! Gotta get my steps in. Trying to do , steps per day!

There are tons of supplies. Why don'’t you paint what YOU see?!

ALMA: Are you thinking what I'’m thinking?

ALMA/RAFIA: World'’s Greatest Artist!

ALMA: It'’s on!

ANDREÉ: You know that making art isn'’t a competition, right?

ALMA: Sure, it is!

RAFIA: Yeah! This is kinda the perfect tie -breaker.

ALMA: The winner will be... The WORLD'’S... GREATEST...

ALMA/RAFIA: EVERYTHING!!!

RAFIA: I'’ll start my painting first.

ALMA: No, I'’ll start mine first!

♪[upbeat music]

RAFIA: Look, Alma! I'’m the World'’s Greatest Paint Carrier!

ALMA: Well, I'’m the World'’s Greatest Paintbrush Carrier! See?

ALMA/RAFIA: THREE-TWO-ONE! GO!

[♪♪♪]

ALMA: I'’m painting faster than you!

RAFIA: Ha! Are you sure about that?!

[paint splatter]

ANDREÉ: Huh?

ANDREÉ: Whoa!

[pigeon coos] [water flowing]

[music ends]

NEA: [humming]

NEA: Oooh, André,

I've never noticed the expressions on the turtles!

So cute! Like you, honey!

ANDREÉ: Aw, thanks, Mom!

ALMA: Ms. Omenma,

whose painting is the greatest?

RAFIA: Who has the greatest sky?

ALMA: Who has the greatest water?

RAFIA: Which one smells the greatest?

ALMA: Smells?!

RAFIA: I ran out of things to ask.

ALMA: Me too..

NEA: [chuckles]

Oooh, that mix of blues and greens, Rafia.

LOVE! IT!

NEA: And, Alma,

mm, mm, mmm.

Those paint lines are so smooth,

it'’s like the water is moving!

NEA: Keep it up, ladies! And remember, I want to see...

How YOU see it!

ALMA/RAFIA: [laughs]

ALMA/RAFIA: DONE!

ALMA: Okay, let'’s see '‘em.

RAFIA: Whoa!

Nice painting, Alma!

ALMA: Yours too!

ALMA/RAFIA: Hmmm...

RAFIA: So uhh... Who won?

ALMA: I dunno. Let'’s ask André!

ALMA: André, whaddya think? Who'’s the World's Greatest Painter?

ANDREÉ: I am! [laughs] Just kidding!

Hmm. Oh, I like both '‘em.

ALMA: Wait.. What?

NEA: Oooh, yes!

ALMA: Ms. Omenma, what do you think?

RAFIA: Yea, who won?

NEA: Gorg' and gorg'! Can'’t wait to hang them in the bookstore.

ALMA: C'’mon, André, you have to pick one!

RAFIA: Yeah, we need to know who'’s the World's Greatest Artist!

ANDREÉ: [laughs] Huh?!

ANDREÉ: Ooh... You'’re serious?

ALMA; Totally serious! This decides who is the...

WORLD'’S... GREATEST... EVERYTHING!!!

ANDREÉ: Well... they'’rebothnice!

RAFIA: Ugh. We need to figure out who'’s the World'’s Greatest Artist!

ALMA: If André won'’t pick, then we have to... But how?!

I gotta think about this.

ALMA/RAFIA: [heavy breathing] [deep breath]

RAFIA: Woo-hoo! I win! World'’s Greatest Racer!

ALMA: With some things, it'’s easy to figure out who wins.

But trying to pick the best painting...it'’s kinda hard to tell.

NEA: Everyone notices different things about it, and they draw what they see!

ALMA: Hmm, so that means...

I noticed different things about the fountain than Rafia?

Yeah, I guess I did.

Ohhhh! That'’s it! I know what to do!

ALMA: Hey, Rafia, I don'’t think we can pick a winner

for the World'’s Greatest Artist.

RAFIA: Huh? What do you mean?

There has to be a winner! And usually, I'’m the winner.

ALMA: Well, there's no such thing as the greatest painting...

so we can't pick the greatest painter.

RAFIA: Say whaaaaaat?

ALMA: You painted what you noticed,

like the fountain, the trees, the grass...

RAFIA: Yeah. The colors all looked so pretty to me.

That'’s what I saw, so, that'’s what I painted.

ALMA: But what really stuck out to me was the water!

The way it moved and shimmered. So, that'’s what I painted.

RAFIA: Hmm... uhhh... interesting...

ALMA: So... no winner, okay?

RAFIA: Okay!

ALMA: So, Rafia, will you show me how you mixed all those blues?

RAFIA: Sure, if you show me how you did that water thing.

ALMA: Okay, deal!

[traffic] [car honk]

[crowd murmuring]

RAFIA: Hey, look!

RAFIA: This one has the coins at the bottom of the fountain!

ALMA: Wow, they look so shiny and real!

ANDREÉ: Alma! RAFIA: [gasp]

ANDREÉ: Rafia! Check out this watercolor one!

ALMA/RAFIA/ANDREÉ: Hmmm...

ALMA: André, I wanna see your painting!

RAFIA: Totally! Where is it?

ANDREÉ: I'’ll show you!

RAFIA: Whoa, no water, huh? Bold.

ANDREÉ: Actually...

I didn't have enough time to paint the water!

[laughs]

ALMA: I love it!

RAFIA: I can'’t believe I'’m saying this,

but I guess not everything has a winner...

ALMA: Here it comes...

RAFIA: But still...

I AM the World'’s Greatest Everything Else!

ALMA: Yup! There it is.

ALMA: We'’re TIED! Remember, Rafia?

RAFIA: Whoops! [chuckles]

NEA: Hey you, anyone want to help me pass these out?

RAFIA: World'’s Greatest Snack Giver-out-er?

ALMA: Oh it'’s on.

♪[happy music]

ALMA/RAFIA: [laugh]

ANDREÉ: Count me in too!

ALMA: I'’m definitely gonna to win this one.
