[SIREN BLARING]

Overlook Drive.

It should be about three blocks up,
and then hang a right.

All right.

[RADIO BEEPS]

DISPATCHER: Squad 51, cancel.

I don't believe that.

A man trapped under his house
with an alligator, and they cancel it.

Can you believe that?

Well,
I wonder what happened on the other end.

Yeah, every time we get a return,
that crosses my mind.

A man trapped under
the house with an alligator.

What is that guy standing
out in the street for?

Does he want us?

Boy, I'm sure glad
I spotted you guys.

I was just running
for a phone booth.

ROY: Well, what's the problem?

It's Lorenzo, he's trapped!

Lorenzo? Well, why don't you hop in,
show us where he's at?

It's right over
in that direction.

Straight over. That's it.

LA, this is Squad 51.

We have an accident at

Send one engine
company to our location.

DISPATCHER: Squad 51.

I hope we're in time.

He's been in there
quite a long time now.

[HORN HONKING]

[SIRENS WAILING]

DISPATCHER ON RADIO:

toxic chemicals are stored
in a tanker.

Use caution.

KELLY ON RADIO: Squad 51,
this is Rampart. Can you send me some EKG?

JOHNNY ON RADIO:

We're sending you a strip.
Vitals to follow.

Pulse is 160. The victim
is in extreme pain, Rampart.

[INTERCOM BEEPING]

This patient is in V-fib.

Rampart, we have lost the
victim's pulse. Beginning CPR.

[RAPID BEEPING]

We're defibrillating victim,
Rampart.

Rampart, we've defibrillated
victim. Decent sinus rhythm.

JOE ON RADIO: Administer 2 amps
sodium bicarb and insert an airway.

KELLY ON RADIO: Start an IV,

DIXIE: Squad 51, continue monitoring
Vitals and transport immediately.

JOHNNY ON RADIO:
We're on our way, Rampart.

Everything the same?

My crane's jammed.
Cable's off the pulley.

I can't get it to go up or down.

JOHNNY: How long
has he been in there?

Ten, maybe 15 minutes tops.

We're gonna have to hurry.
Can you move this crane at all?

If I pull up the outriggers,
the whole thing is gonna go into the drink.

Well, maybe I should climb up
and see what I can do from there.

You better get a cutting tool.

All right.

ELDRIDGE: Well, then, perhaps
one of you gentlemen will listen to me.

Oh, hey, this old guy is nuts.

He wants me to cut the cable
and let the trunk go into the drink.

In that trunk is
Lorenzo The Magnificent,

one of the greatest magicians
the world has ever seen.

This renowned artiste has appeared
before the crowned heads of Europe,

and he has presented to us,
his peers in the world of magic...

Pick a card, pick a card.
No, no...

His peers in the world of magic
that he has perfected a new trick

that will make even
the classic underwater escape

of the great Houdini
look ridiculous.

He is here to
demonstrate it to us.

And I can assure you
that if you cut that cable,

he is perfectly capable
of escaping underwater.

Now, I'm not so sure, Eldridge.

Lorenzo may have gone
off the deep end on this one.

Has he ever pulled
this off before?

No, but if he says he can do it,
he can do it.

Well,
I don't know if we can take that chance.

Please, you must believe me.

If you don't believe me,
ask him.

Bullhorn. Where's the
bullhorn? Over there.

There's the bullhorn.
There. Ask him. Ask him.

Go ahead, do it.

Lorenzo, can you hear me?

Yes.

Can you get out of there okay?
Can you unlock that trunk?

No need for that.
Just cut the cable.

Well, I'll climb up above and
see if I can't work the cable loose.

If not, I'll just have
to cut it, okay?

All right.

All right, do you have any keys?

Keys, keys, keys. Keys, keys.

I'm gonna need them.

Keys, keys.

Thank you.

Mr. Lorenzo,
can you open that trunk? Can you unlock it?

Mr. Lorenzo! Roy?

Yeah.

I think he's unconscious.

Go ahead and cut it.

Okay.

You gonna go in after him?

Nope.

JAMISON: No? Well, why not?

Hooray, Lorenzo!

Good for you, boy!

ELDRIDGE: Well done!

Yes, sir, Eldridge was the only
one who thought you'd really make it.

ROY: Real nice.

Well, thank you.

I have a question
I want to ask you.

Yeah.

Exactly how did you know
that he was going to get out?

He told us. Remember?

Now, here, sir. Get up. Up!

Good boy, Lorenzo.

Here you are.

I do thank both of you.

That's all right.

As we grow older,
people tend to think talents diminish.

I thank you for allowing
me once again to prove

that I am still
Lorenzo The Magnificent.

As a small token
of my extreme gratitude,

I give you

this.

Once you have uncovered the
mysteries of the magic globe,

it will reveal to you
the secret of the universe.

MAN: It's okay.

Kelly, do you have time to
take a look at the patient floor?

Yeah, I will stop
in this afternoon.

Ambulance just brought in a man.

Hello, Kel.

Well, hello.

I always said I'd come down,

visit you at work
some time, didn't I?

And I always said you didn't have
to make a special trip just to do that.

What seems to be the problem?

[PANTS]

Well, I...

I've been having these pains in my leg,
you see. And then...

I seem to have trouble
catching my breath.

[GROANS]

Right there, huh? Uh-huh.

How long have you had the pains?

Oh, a couple of...

Two or three days.
But this morning...

This morning is when it
really started getting to me.

Put him in treatment 1.
I'll be right there.

All right.

You're gonna have to
handle this one, Joe.

Why, Kel?

That's my father.

I know that, I know it. I also
know that you would've gone in

after that guy,
that magician or...

Lorenzo,
Lorenzo the Magnificent.

Lorenzo the Magnificent,
unless...

Unless you knew something
that I didn't know, right?

What?

Unless you knew something
that I didn't know.

All right,
I knew something that you didn't know.

But I can't give away the man's
secret in front of all of his friends.

Well, I can understand that.
I can understand that.

That's very considerate of you.

Thank you.

Well, you're welcome.
What was his secret?

Well, I can't tell you. You see,
it's a matter of professional confidence.

Oh, Roy, for heaven's sake.

Now, look, he gave us this ball
because he thought we were a team, right?

And we are a team, right?

All right.

He wasn't in the trunk.

He wasn't in the trunk?
Well, where was he?

He was underneath the pier.

I climb down there, and he's sitting
down there with a handie-talkie.

Had a speaker in the trunk.

Well, how did he get from the
trunk up underneath the pier?

I don't know.

[ALARM SOUNDING]

DISPATCHER: Squad 51, LA.

Man injured.

1521 Mountain View.

Cross street, Hilldale.
Time out, 0951.

Squad 51. KMG 365.

[SIREN BLARING]

We're gonna have to
scoot you over, sir.

All right.

[GROANS]

When are you two
going to get around

to letting me know what's
going on here?

We have to make
some tests first.

Huh?

It's my husband. I knew I
shouldn't have let them do it.

Do what?

Oh, he and his friends. They got
together and built that dumb fireplace.

I told him he should get somebody
who knew what he was doing,

but he wanted
to save some money.

What exactly happened?

The whole fireplace exploded.

I told him he didn't
know what he was doing.

Okay, we got a
pulse here at 140.

Respiration's 36 and shallow.

Rampart,
this is Squad 51. How do you read?

This is Rampart Emergency.
Go ahead, 51.

Rampart, we have a male,
approximately 35 years old.

He's been involved
in an expl*si*n.

Pulse is 140. Respiration
is 36 and shallow.

He's unconscious... How
long has he been unconscious?

Several minutes.

Rampart, he's been unconscious
for about several minutes.

Pulse is 140. The
respiration is 36 and shallow.

Stand by for BP.

BP is 160 over 110.

Rampart, BP is 160 over 110.

Lay back.

[MAN PANTING]

Oh, look, I don't need this.

Look, I'm already...
My head's fine.

It's okay. Maybe
you do feel fine.

We'll let the doctors
decide that, all right?

Let me take a look
at your eyes here.

Equal and sluggish.

How many fingers you see?

Three. No, four.

Now, follow this finger here,
all right?

Rampart, eyes equal
and sluggish.

Possible diplopia.
Possible concussion.

He has facial lacerations
and contusions.

Have you got him on O2?

Affirmative, Rampart.

Keep him on 02 and transport.

JOHNNY: 10-4, Rampart.

I feel fine, really.

Okay, you heard the man.
Take you to the hospital.

What could he have
put in the fireplace?

I don't know, but when I lit the fire,
it exploded for no reason.

How long ago was that
fireplace finished?

Oh, I'd say...

We were anxious to try it out
after all the work we'd done.

Well, you didn't
let the mortar dry.

It turned the water into steam.

Is that important?

I'd say that's important.

[SIREN WAILING]

Look, there's the ambulance.

I don't want to go. You see,
I'm all right. Really, my head's all right.

I want to tell you something.

If my brain wasn't working right, I'd be
the first one to know about it, wouldn't I?

Not necessarily, Jamie.

Please, take him in.

Come on, let's put this back on.

Just relax, now, all right?

Is that... Yeah, it is...

Kel, I've got the results
on your dad's x-ray.

Well, let's take a look.

Well, there's a small shadow in the
right field. Could be a small infarction.

Any result on the
arterial blood gases yet?

Well, the PO2 is 63. I think we'd
better start the heparin therapy now.

No, it's too risky, Mike.

He has a history of peptic ulcer with a
serious hemorrhage about a year ago.

Doctor wanted to operate,
and he wouldn't let him.

Let me know as soon as
the lung scan is done, huh?

Right away.

Hey, Kel.

How you doing?

All right, all right.

[sums]

How'd my tests come out?

Well, I asked Dr. Crowell
to take care of you.

He's a cardio-vascular
specialist.

It seems you have a large
clot in the vein of your right leg.

We suspect some of it has broken
loose and traveled to your lung.

Yeah, that's...

That's bad, isn't it?

It could be if a large enough
piece of the clot broke loose.

You know, it's funny, I...

I can still remember
the day you were born.

The size of you
about so big, just

lying there so helpless and...

Now things just seem to be
completely turned around, aren't they?

Hey, wait a minute.

I thought you said you weren't
going to worry about this.

I know I did,
Kel. I'm trying not to. It's just that...

That sometimes
I can't help but...

[sums]

There's just so much I
haven't done. So many...

So many things I want to do.

And there's a lot of things
I want to do with you.

I know we...

We haven't seen much
of each other lately.

Shucks, I understand that.

You've been a busy fellow.

No, not that busy.

I'll tell you what.

As soon as you get out of here,
we're going to go fishing.

You know, we haven't been
fishing in a long time.

I know.

I'd like that, I really would...

It's just that
I don't know if I can.

What makes you think you can't?

[sums]

You're gonna have to cut me up pretty good,
right?

Yeah, it might be
necessary to operate.

Hey, but don't forget.
You're in pretty good hands.

Yeah, I know.

What a lucky guy I am that...

That you were
such a stubborn kid.

Come on.

Don't you remember how hard I tried
to talk you into being a lawyer? Huh?

All righty.
We got everything here.

Well, see, I told you.
Clear as a bell.

No concussion?
Well, just a mild one.

Doctor said that I'll have to
take it easy for a little while.

But now that I know what I'm doing wrong,
I think I'll start over from the beginning.

Well, I'm just kidding. You guys are okay,
you know, you saved my life.

Thanks.

Oh, what's that?

[CLEARS THROAT]

The secret of the universe.

You mean, like how
to deal with wives?

Well, you better send me a copy.

Well, thanks again.

Yeah, thank you. Good luck.

Yeah, you too.

I think I'll need it.

MARCO: And that guy...

Lorenzo,
Lorenzo the Magnificent.

Lorenzo the Magnificent.

Didn't he tell you what you're going
to find inside when you get it open?

If he gets it open.

I'll get it open.
Don't worry about that.

I can get it open.
It's one of these, I know.

John, now, if you break it,
that's cheating.

I'm not breaking it.
I don't have to cheat.

JOHNNY: All this is
is mind over matter.

Yeah? Where are you
going to get the mind?

[SCOFFS]

You want me to give
you a hand there?

I can get it.
I'm just getting warmed up.

This thing's not going
to get the best of me.

Yeah.

[ALARM SOUNDING]

DISPATCHER: Station 51,
vehicle accident with injuries.

Ocean Park Boulevard
and 73rd Street.

Ocean Park Boulevard
and 73rd Street.

Time out, 1148.

STANLEY: Station 51. KMG 365.

[SIREN WAILING]

You and Marco have a look
around the apartment for occupants.

[WOMAN GROANS]

You all right?

LA Engine 51, we have a vehicle accident
with power lines down on a building.

Notify the power company.

Are you okay?
Do you have any injuries?

We can help you. You're gonna
have to tell us if you're all right.

I'm all right. All right.

Okay.

I'm all right. There's
nothing wrong with me!

How're you doing?
We got it, all right?

We're going to take you to the hospital
and have someone check you out, okay?

I'm telling you, I'm all right.

You're pretty lucky
not to have any injuries.

Lucky? I wasn't even in the car.

I'd just gotten out of it and I must
have left it in gear or something,

and it rolled down the hill
into this pole.

And it's my boyfriend's
brand-new van. He's gonna k*ll me.

Okay, why don't we just
move you over there?

Let's get you out of the glass.

Okay, there you go.

Her purse? All right.

There we are.

Take care of her, please.

Cap, we got an injured man
in the end room down here.

[ELECTRICAL BUZZING]

Hey, don't move a muscle.

Now, listen, pal, don't touch anything
metal till we get the power cut off.

Trust me.

I'll need the pry bar and the dry
chemical in case that oil flashes.

How are you doing?

Michael, throw a ladder up into that
pole down there and cut those wires.

Give him a hand there, Chet.

All right, it'll be okay.

Rampart, this is Squad 51.
How do you read me?

Go ahead, 51.

Rampart, we have a victim trapped
under a transformer and it's leaking oil.

Johnny, he's got a cast
on his left leg.

Rampart, he's also got
a cast on his left leg.

How did you get that cast?

I zigged when I should've
zagged, that's what happened.

[sums]

I know you're not
going to believe it,

at least it doesn't
look that way right now,

but you're looking
at a real champion skier.

Except you zigged
when you should have zagged.

Right.

What was the damage?

A whole lot of broken leg.

Rampart, he broke his leg in
that previous accident, skiing.

How about some vitals?

Rampart, we can't get at him.
He's still surrounded by hot wires.

Juice is off.
Let's get that off of him.

All right.

Okay.

STANLEY: Come on in here, Chet.

Okay. Ready?

There, hold it.

Okay.

Okay, it's off.
Just let it slide.

Watch it, watch it.

Okay.

It's a broken right tibia.

Yeah, that does look
like that, doesn't it?

Yeah.

I'll get a blood pressure.

Get some stuff
out of the way here.

Rampart, this is Squad 51 again.

Rampart, we have
a broken right tibia.

The victim has just been
extricated. Stand by for vitals.

Pulse is 115.

[COUGHS]

Twenty.

Rampart, we got a respiration
of 20 and a pulse of 115.

Stand by for BP.

BP is 136 over 70.

Rampart, BP is 136 over 70.

and transport.

10-4, Rampart.

Got the rest of
your test results.

Well, what's the verdict?

[sums]

The special vein x-ray
Dr. Crowell did this morning

showed a clot in the deep
vein of your leg.

We really can't tell
how extensive it is, though.

And the lung scan verified
that several small pieces

have already traveled
to your lung.

Fortunately they haven't
produced any major problem.

What happens next?

Oh, Crowell wants to do
another type of vein x-ray

to see how large
the clot really is.

If it's extensive,
then surgery may be necessary

to prevent the clot
from traveling to your lung.

And that could be a little
hairy for a fellow my age, huh?

[sums]

Kel? Come on.

You're not going to start
kidding me now, are you?

Well,

now is not the time to start.

Good.

The odds against you would make
a Las Vegas gambler run for cover.

But all I keep remembering
is how you've

toughed it out a dozen
different times over the years.

Oh, sure.

There were times a lot of
other men would've caved in.

Have a little
accident, huh, Gage?

It fell off the table.

Uh-huh. You're
lucky it didn't break.

Then you couldn't have
used your brain power.

Look at this. Look. Look.

What do you think of that?

Well, it's a start, I guess.

You know, I must have pushed
on that thing a dozen times.

You know what I would do
if I were you, Gage?

I'd put that under
the wheel of a fire engine.

The next time we get a call,
you get to the core of your problem.

That's cheating.

Right.

Chet, you don't cheat
with something like this.

You just have
to have perseverance.

Well, cheating is easier, Gage.

Hey, Kelly? Yeah, Cap.

Oh, no. Oh, no.

I didn't do it again.

[PHONE RINGING]

Hello?

[KNOCKING]

[sums]

I see.

Yeah, all right. Thank you,
Doctor. I'll look in on him.

Bad news?

Dr. Crowell said
the second venogram

showed a more extensive
clot than we'd expected.

If it breaks loose,
it could be fatal.

So, what's next?

Crowell called in a vascular surgeon,
Dr. Johnson.

They're setting up for an
immediate caval plication.

Well, he's the best.

Yeah, I know.

This is one of those times you
wonder if the best is good enough.

Kel. Yeah.

How you feeling?

A little woozy.
Getting woozier all the time.

It's that sh*t they gave
you a few minutes ago.

Yeah? I guess so.

Listen, Kelly,

I wanna

sleep.

Over here... Easy.

Changing horses in midstream.

It's a funny feeling,
going to sleep and

knowing you're going under and not knowing
if you're gonna come out of it again.

Kelly, you gonna be with me?

No, I'm afraid not.

Dr. Johnson's going to do
the actual operation.

He's the best surgeon
we've got here.

Oh, good.

Well, let's get
on with it, then.

It's not fair to keep a good
doctor like that waiting.

JOHNSON: Hemostat.

Sponge.

Ok, I'll have the peritoneum
freed up in just a minute.

Okay. There it is. Retractor.

All right. Now just gently
retract the peritoneum medially.

That's good.

There's the inferior vena cava.

ASSISTANT: How far
does the clot extend?

JOHNSON: Well, it goes well
up into the iliac from the femoral.

But I don't feel
anything up in the cava.

We should be able to prevent
any spread to the lung area.

Okay, I'm going
to try free up the IVC.

Okay, wanna get
the clamp around it.

Okay, can you hold it back
just a little bit more?

That's it. Good,
just like that. Okay.

Okay. There it is. Good.

ASSISTANT: He's hemorrhaging.

JOHNSON: Put a sponge on him.

That's it. Just hold it.

Okay, just hold it for a second. Okay,
just let it up slowly.

Okay, I see the vessel.

Okay, just leave the tie.

Hold this.

Okay.

Get the scissors. Scissors.

Okay, good. Now just cut that.

Okay, yeah. Looks pretty clean.

Okay. Let's get on with
the caval plication. 5-0 silk.

Where's Johnny?

Don't know.

What are you doing?

Oh, I'm just getting away
from those characters in there.

How's it coming?

Pretty good, you know,
I got it down pat now.

See,
look. This piece goes out like that.

And this piece goes like that.

Yeah, and then what?

Well, and then this goes like that,
and then that goes like that.

Want to help me in
the back for a minute?

Yeah, I'm... Sorry.

[ALARM SOUNDING]

DISPATCHER: Station 51,
Engine 38, Truck 74, Battalion 14.

Broken gas meter with fire. Valley
Crest Road and Treeline Drive.

Valley Crest Road
and Treeline Drive.

Gas Company has been notified. Time out,

STANLEY: Station 51. KMG 365.

[SIREN WAILING]

Hold on. Help is
here. I'll be right back.

I'm afraid everything's
going to blow up.

No, you'll be all right.
I'll be right back.

There's a girl trapped. I
think everything's going to go.

Kerosene's already
beginning to seep in there.

STANLEY: Yeah. Listen, we can't
wait for the gas company on this thing.

We got to get this fire out.

Roy, you and I'll go
in there with dry powder.

John, check that. There's a girl
in the car up there, check her out.

Okay, Marco, Chet,
inch and a half protector lines.

Listen, we'll take it from here.

You stand back,
out of the way, all right?

Are you hurt?

I just feel numb all over,
I can't tell. I'm stuck.

Okay, we'll try to get
you out of there.

Can this open? Yes.

All right. Now, you sure
you're not hurt anywhere?

I think so.

Okay, I'm gonna get
something to get you out of here.

Okay.

So you just take it easy, okay?

Okay.

Hey, Cap, could I grab
the jaws to get her out?

Handle by yourself
okay, you think?

Yeah, I think so. I'll
holler if I need your help.

Can I give you a hand?

Yeah, you can.

Can you carry
this in here for me?

Yeah.

Just follow me with it, okay?

All right, we're gonna try
to get as close as we can.

We might not be able to get
in there without additional lines.

So if it gets too hot,
we'll pull out, all right? Come on.

You think you can start
that thing? Sure thing.

Okay, can you take it as far away as
this truck as possible? Back behind?

All right.

How are you feeling now,
huh? Better.

I didn't think either one of
you was really coming back.

What about the numbness?

About the same.

About the same. Okay.

All right, in the back of the squad is a
box of chains and an asbestos blanket.

You think you can
grab it for me?

Okay. Sure.

Good enough. Hold it.

Change them up, Mike!

Okay. Okay.

Captain, as soon as those two lines of
yours are set, you can back us up on that.

All right, why don't
you just move over

to the other side of the car?
Let's cover her up.

Now, I'm going to have to break that glass,
so if you can cover her face with this?

Okay.

Okay, just like that.

All right.

Ready?

Watch your face.

That ought to do it.

STANLEY: Stay behind.

Rush those burns about four,
five feet up. Dead center in there.

Go. Watch those centers. Get the middle
of that thing. About four or five feet up.

A little higher.
A little higher.

Another three feet there.
God, that's hot.

God, that is hot.

STANLEY: Same place,
up in the middle.

A little more, a little more.

Keep them up there,
keep them up there.

Good.

Keep these fog lines in
position in case we get a re-flash.

Roy, let's go see
how John's doing.

Flame's out. Can you get your
hood open there, buddy?

STANLEY: I'll disconnect
this battery. We can re-flash.

You had a pretty
close call there.

I didn't think I was ever
going to get out of here.

All right.

What's that?

Well, that's silence. Looks like
the gas company shut off that main.

There we are.

All right.

How'd it go, Bill?

Hey, you're talking to the best vascular
surgeon in the business, remember?

Yeah, I almost forgot.

It was a good operation, Kel.

The plication should prevent that
clot from embolizing to the lung.

Then after a couple weeks of
treating his phlebitis, he should be okay.

Hey, thanks, Bill.
I appreciate it, huh?

My pleasure.

Hey, Kel, how about
a cup of coffee?

Yeah, sounds like
a good idea, Joe.

What are you doing this weekend?

I don't know. Probably stick
around the house, relax for a while.

Trying to open that ball, huh?

I'm not working
on that ball anymore.

It's childish. It's a waste of time,
if you think about it.

Yeah? Sure.

[JOHNNY SCOFFS]

What did you do?

Hey, congratulations, Roy.
Isn't that great, John?

What did you do?

Just fell apart on me.

Well, of course it fell apart.
I do all the preceding work,

and you come in
and take the credit for it.

Well, I don't want
any credit for it.

Well, that's beside the
point. You got the credit.

Hey, this must be
the secret of the universe.

Hey, you give me that.

What's it say?

Hey, I'd like to know
the secret of the universe.

Well, it says...

Says it's made in Japan.

Kind of enigmatic, isn't it?

What else does it say?

Well, that's all.
It says it's made in Japan.

Lorenzo the Magnificent
strikes again.

sh**t.

Hey, hey, what are you doing?

Getting rid of this junk.

I don't want you
to get rid of it.

I want it. I've got to
put it back together.

Why?

Well,
so I can take it apart. By myself.

You start on those
two big pieces, it'll...

By myself.
