We live in a big, beautiful world.

I'm Leo.

I'm Andy.

And I'm Carmen.

Our parents work in a circus that travels

all around the world and we travel with them.

So we never know where in the world we will end up next.

(train whistling)

But wherever we go, we know that

Luna the Moon will be there with us.

Trumpeter: Hey!

Andy: Woo! Yeah! This music is incredible!

What is it?

Carmen: It's jazz!

Andy: Hey! Check out my jazz moves!

Carmen: Nice one, Andy. Now check out mine!

Andy: Cool moves, Carmen!

Leo: Oh! Oh! My Turn!

(splat)

Ugh.

Carmen: You okay, Leo?

Leo: Yes.

Carmen: You know who has some really amazing dance moves?

Andy/Leo: Luna!

Carmen: We need to find her and tell her

all about the cool jazz dancing going on around here in...

wait, where are we?

Can you help us, Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: Sure can!

Welcome to New Orleans, Louisiana!

A city in the United States of America,

known for jazz music

and big celebrations.

Here, people celebrate just about everything

with music and dance

-- even funerals!

Andy: Funerals, Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: When someone dies,

people often honor them with a funeral.

In New Orleans, they have what's called a Jazz Funeral.

The Jazz Funeral started in the African American community

and features a brass band that marches through the streets.

The band is followed by family and friends

who knew the person who passed away.

Have fun in New Orleans, friends!

Carmen: Thanks, Magic Globe!

There sure is a lot of great dancing and music here!

I can't wait until we run into Luna and...

Carmen/Skwiggle Man: OOF!

Carmen: Oh, I'm sorry!

Skwiggle Man: It's cool, no harm done.

Carmen: We're actually looking for our friend Luna.

Have you seen her?

Skwiggle Man: Oh, yeah... Luna the Moon...

She's up there...

Luna: (sigh)

Carmen/Andy/Leo: Luna!

Carmen: ♪ Luna come and play! ♪

Leo: ♪ Luna's here, what do ya say! ♪

Andy: ♪ Luna bright as day! ♪

All ♪ Show us the world... ♪

(applause)

Luna: Hey, guys, meet Skwiggle Man.

Skwiggle Man, meet my friends,

Andy, Leo and Carmen.

Skwiggle Man: Hello!

Andy: Whoa, your name is Skwiggle Man?

Skwiggle Man: Actually, my real name is Maurice.

Skwiggle Man is my nickname...

on account of all the squigglin' I do!

Andy: Neat!

Leo: Luna, they're playing really cool

New Orleans jazz at the Circo!

We want you to come dance with us!

Luna: Oh, that's nice of you, Leo but

I don't know if I feel like dancing today.

Carmen: What happened, Luna?

Luna: I just heard that Bessie, one of my oldest friends,

d*ed today.

She was a -year-old alligator.

We used to dance together.

(deep sigh)

Carmen: Oh, Luna, we're so sorry

to hear about your friend.

Luna: Yeah. This is one of her records.

She was a jazz singer, and she sang my all-time favorite song

"Shimmy Like an Alligator."

I'm sad I won't get to see her anymore.

Carmen: Okay, guys.

We need to help cheer Luna up.

Andy: Hey, remember what Magic Globe said about jazz funerals?

I wonder if they're having one for Bessie?

Carmen: Hey, yeah! That might work!

What do you think, Skwiggle Man?

Skwiggle Man: I think that's a great idea.

Say, Luna, we sure hate to see you sad,

and I know Bessie would hate to see it too.

You know what she would say...

Luna: Yeah, I know: "Dancing is a

one-way ticket outta frown town".

But I don't know if I can dance anymore, Skwiggle Man.

I tried listening to one of Bessie's old records,

but even that didn't make me want to dance.

And that's my favorite song.

Skwiggle Man: Aw, Luna, Bessie wouldn't want you

to never dance again.

And her funeral is just startin'!

Let's get down there and join the second line!

I'm sure that'll get your dancing legs back!

Luna: Maybe you're right, guys.

A jazz funeral might be just what I need to celebrate

Bessie's jazzy soul.

(sad funeral music) ♪

Carmen: Look at all the people!

Leo: Yeah, Bessie must have been

really popular!

Skwiggle Man: She sure was.

Bessie meant so much to so many...

especially to Luna.

Skwiggle Man: Bessie and Luna were especially close...

like two peas in a pod.

Whenever they got together, there was nothing

they liked better than singin' and dancin'

especially the dancin'.

Folks around town knew her

as the best jazz singer in New Orleans

and Luna was her biggest fan.

And, when Bessie didn't sing so much anymore,

Luna would still come to see her old friend.

Because the only thing they enjoyed more than

sharing a song, was sharing each other's company.

Carmen/Andy/Leo: Awww!!

Carmen: That's so sweet!

Luna: (sigh) Andy: Cool funeral, huh Luna?

Luna: Of course, guys.

It's great to see all of Bessie's loved ones

honor her life.

I don't know. The only thing

that makes me feel a little better is listening

to my favorite Bessie song,

"Shimmy Like an Alligator."

If I didn't have this record...

I don't know what I'd do!

Carmen: Luna! Your record! Luna: Huh?

(bing)

Bessie: "...shake and shimmy like an alligator

'till my blues go away."

All: Wahhh!!

All: I got it! I got it! I got it!

(cr*ck) Crowd: (gasps)

Luna: Oh, no! My record...

it's... it's... GONE!

Carmen: I'm sorry, Luna...

we tried to catch it!

Luna: I know, it's not your fault.

I'm sorry guys, but I...

I just can't do this right now!

Skwiggle Man: I think Luna might need some alone time.

Luna: (sigh) No Bessie, no dancing,

and now my favorite record gone forever.

This is one Blue Orleans day.

Bessie: Luna!

Luna: WAH?? Who said that?

Bessie: On the cover of your record, Silly!

Luna: Huh? Bessie?

Bessie: That's right!

Come to ask why you're so down in the dumps!

Luna: Well, it's because you're gone, Bessie...

and I miss you.

I just don't feel like myself anymore.

Bessie: Hmmm... Yeah,

that happens sometimes when you lose someone.

And it's important to feel those sad feelings

and work through them.

But you know what's even more important, Luna?

Luna: What's that, Bessie?

Bessie: Bein' happy, and havin' a good time!

Come on, Luna, that's my one and only jazz funeral out there!

You gotta think of all our happy times

and dance those tears away!

Bessie: Here, do like me!

(jazz scatting) ♪

ha haha!

Luna: You mean like...

(jazz scatting) ♪

Bessie: Yes! That's the spirit!

You're in New Orleans, Louisiana!

You gotta celebrate my life

with a happy, jazzy celebration!

And you're the happiest,

jazziest moon I know.

Luna: Yeah... I guess I forgot

that you would want me to be happy

and dance at your jazz funeral.

Bessie: That's right, Luna!

You know what I always say!

Bessie/Luna: Dancin' is a one way ticket out of frown town!

Bessie: (laughing)

Bessie: Quit your mopin', Luna!

They're gettin' ready to play our favorite song!

Luna: (gasps) Shimmy Like an Alligator? Nuh uh!

Bessie: Yes-huh!

Now get out there and make me proud!

Luna: You're right, Bessie, I gotta do what I do best.

I gotta dance!

(Jazz music) ♪

Carmen: Whoa, why's the music speeding up?

Skwiggle Man: Oh, we're on to the next part

of Bessie's jazz funeral.

That slow, sad music was the dirge.

Now the song gets swingin'

and folks start shakin' and shimmyin' on the second line!

Andy: Woooo, yeah!!

I can get down to this!!

Leo: But wait, something's missing.

Carmen: Yeah, we can't dance without Lu--

(loud whistle) Carmen/Andy/Leo/Skwiggle Man: Huh??

(kathoom) Luna: Watcha!!!

Carmen/Andy/Leo/Skwiggle Man: Luna!!!

Luna: C'mon, friends!

Let's get dancing on the second line!

Andy: Luna, you got your dancin' legs back!

Carmen: I've missed them so much!

Luna: Me too, guys.

Bessie wouldn't want me to be sad at her funeral,

she'd want me to be shimmyin'

and shakin' the New Orleans way!

It takes a while to start feeling better

when someone dies.

Dancing not only helps,

it's a wonderful way to celebrate the person's life.

Thanks for helping me get my dancin' legs back.

Skwiggle Man: Don't mention it, Luna.

Carmen: I've never seen anything quite like Luna's crazy legs!

Leo: Yeah! Just look at em' go!

Leo: Wait... they're gone.

Leo/Carmen: Luna?

Luna: Up here!

Carmen/Andy/Leo/Skwiggle Man: Luna!

Luna: Sorry, guys.

It was time for me to shuffle off the second line

and into the sky!

Leo: Thanks for showing us around New Orleans, Luna.

Andy: Yeah, jazz funerals are the best!

Carmen: It seems like Bessie was the best, too.

Luna: She sure was.

I'll always miss my friend,

and sometimes I'll get sad about it.

But when I do, I'll just remember

that Bessie would want me to dance.

Carmen: But Luna, we want to see more of New Orleans, Louisiana!

Luna: Don't worry, Carmen!

Andy: Hi, it's Andy with a song about a mythical ghost character

who is mischievous

and always playing silly tricks.

And Lutin is his name.

Pippa: Thanks for helping me paint the set

for tonight's performance, kids.

Leo: You bet, Mom!

Pippa: I'm sure the audience here in New Orleans, Louisiana

will just love it!

Andy: New Orleans, Louisiana? What's that?

Carmen: New Orleans is the city we're in today.

Isn't that right, Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: That's right, Carmen!

The city of New Orleans is located

in the state of Louisiana,

in the country of the United States of America.

New Orleans is a colorful city,

full of wonderful people

whose families came from all around the world,

bringing their traditions with them.

Andy/Carmen/Leo: Thanks, Magic Globe!

Pippa: We want the set we're making

to look just like New Orleans!

So, we need to find out

how the people, food,

and styles of different countries

have influenced the city!

Andy: Influences... what's influence?

Pippa: When people, places, or ideas make you think

or do things a different way.

That's influence.

Andy: Like how I started wearing a hat when I saw Leo's hat!

He influenced me!

Carmen: Yeah! And how Andy's green color

made me want to start wearing green dresses.

Andy influenced me!

Pippa: Exactly!

Fabuloso: Good morning, everybody!

Me oh my, this set is looking simply Fabuloso!

It reminds me of Spain.

I feel like I am back in my home country once again!

Andy: New Orleans reminds you of...

Spain?

Fabuloso: Oh, yes!

The Spanish influence on this city is undeniable.

Andy: Oh, yeah... influence!

You mean that New Orleans looks a lot like Spain.

Bonjour: : Incredible!

Come look at this set, Au Revoir!

Au Revoir: : Wow!

Bonjour/Au Revoir: Just look at that French influence!

Au Revoir: : It reminds us of France!

Andy: Whoa, whoa, whoa!

How can one American city

remind people of Spain and France?

Magic Globe: (clears throat) Mind if I jump in here?

Lots of people moved to New Orleans from Spain and France.

They brought their influences,

so New Orleans reminds us of both countries!

Magic Globe: Native Americans were already living in the area

we now call Louisiana,

when New Orleans was planned and built by France,

but the city was later given to Spain.

Leo: This is a little confusing Magic Globe.

Magic Globe: I know, I know.

Well today, New Orleans is part of the United States,

but the influences of Spain and France

can be found all around the city.

Fabuloso: Sounds to me like New Orleans

is obviously much more Spanish.

Bonjour: : Don't be silly!

Au Revoir: New Orleans is clearly more French!

Pippa: Now I'm confused too.

I want our set to be accurate.

Should it be more French or Spanish?

Fabuloso: It's obvious we cannot agree,

so let's settle this like gentlemen.

Au Revoir: As you wish.

En garde!

Bonjour: Not like zat, brother!

Andy: I know! You should go outside and count

how many things are French

and how many are Spanish,

so you can see who influenced New Orleans more!

Fabuloso: Agreed. That will settle it

once and for all!

Pippa: You'd better go with them, Andy.

We need this New Orleans set to be perfect for tonight's show!

Leo: Here, take this walkie-talkie

and report back what you learn.

If it's more French or Spanish.

Andy: Got it!

Carmen: We'll stay here and build exactly what you tell us:

more Spain or more France!

Andy: You can count on me!

Andy: So this is New Orleans!

It's really cool.

Fabuloso: Oh, just look at these buildings!

Each one a perfect example of the Spanish style!

Bonjour/Au Revoir: Hmmph.

Andy: What makes them Spanish, Señor Fabuloso?

Fabuloso: These beautiful wrought iron balconies

are just like ones we have back home in Spain.

Fabuloso: And this red tile roof?

It is muy Spanish!

Andy: Interesting...

Did you hear that, guys? Make it more Spanish!

Leo: Copy that, Andy.

Bonjour: Nice try, Señor Fabuloso, but did you even see

what is inside zat building?

Au Revoir: Ah, c'est bien, brother.

It's a little café,

serving delicious beignets!

Bonjour: Which are tres French!

Fabuloso: Hmmph!!!

Andy: Okay...

New update, guys.

Make it...

Andy: ...more French!

Leo: More French!

Carmen: But I just started making it more Spanish!

Andy: Hmmm...

What other influences can we find?

Andy: Hey, look over there, it's..

Luna!

All: Luna!

Andy: ♪ Luna, bright as day! ♪

Luna: Hi, friends. What brings you to...?

Fabuloso: A-ha! Look, Luna is eating paella,

a dish from Spain!

Bonjour: Absurd!

Au Revoir: Zat is obviously Bouillabaisse,

a very popular dish from France!

Luna: Actually, this is a stew called gumbo.

It's flavors come from Spain, France, and other places,

but it's from right here in New Orleans.

I reallllllly love Gumbo.

What do you guys love about this city?

Fabuloso: Well Luna, I'm glad you asked.

(Spanish guitar music) ♪♪

Au Revoir: Oh brother.

Fabuloso: ♪ Ah, New Orleans ♪

♪ It's just like Spain ♪

♪ Spanish feeling everywhere ♪

♪ New Orleans' claim to fame! ♪

Fabuloso: AAAAAH!!!!!

Bonjour: ♪ We love New Orleans ♪

♪ 'cause every glance. ♪

♪ Has a certain "je ne sais quoi" ♪

♪ zat feels just like France ♪

Fabuloso: ♪ New Orleans was Spanish for years. ♪

Au Revoir: ♪ But it was built by French engineers! ♪

Bonjour: ♪ Their planning made the city grow ♪

Fabuloso: ♪ So Spanish and muy Fabuloso! ♪

Fabuloso: ♪ Mmmm... That smells like Spanish food! ♪

Au Revoir: ♪ Ew, what's that stench? ♪

Fabuloso: ♪ I hear someone speaking Spanish ♪

Bonjour: ♪ No, zat sounds like French! ♪

Croc: Do you mind?

All: ♪ It's plain to see New Orleans is ♪

Fabuloso: ♪ Spanish! ♪

Bonjour/Au Revoir: ♪ French! ♪

Bonjour/Au Revoir/Fabuloso: Grrrrr......

Andy: There's got to be some way we can settle this, Luna.

What if we ask someone who lives here?

You always know the perfect person

for answering any question!

Luna: That's true, I do!

C'mon!

(grumbling)

Andy: What is this place, Luna?

Luna: It's a research center, where lots of teachers

and people from colleges come

to look things up and find things out.

Luna: And there's one now!

Hi, Dr. Batiste!

Dr. Paloma: Hello, Luna!

Luna: Everyone, this is Dr. Paloma Batiste.

She's a historian from right here in New Orleans.

A historian is someone who studies events from the past.

Dr. Paloma: Hello, every--

Fabuloso: AHH--HA!!

See? Paloma is a Spanish name.

Bonjour: Ah, but her last name is Batiste!

Au Revoir: A French name.

Dr. Paloma: That's right!

Luna: Maybe you can settle this argument.

Andy: Is New Orleans Spanish or French?

Dr. Paloma: Well...

it's both!

Fabuloso/Bonjour/Au Revoir: Ah-HA!

Fabuloso: Wait, wait, wait... both?

Bonjour: What does this mean "both"?

Dr. Paloma: This city is influenced by both the Spanish

and the French,

but that's just the beginning of the story.

In New Orleans, you can feel the influence

of many different people from different countries

and even continents.

Dr. Paloma: Another big influence in New Orleans

is the continent my ancestors came from: Africa!

Bonjour/Au Revoir/Fabuloso: Africa?

Andy: Stand by, g*ng. We've got some new

influence info coming in.

Dr. Paloma: You know, this place is like gumbo.

It's full of lots of different mixed-up influences

that all add up to one great city:

New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Paloma: ♪ In New Orleans, Everywhere ♪

♪ From the Spanish Plaza ♪

♪ To Congo Square ♪

♪ So much music, food and style ♪

♪ So many places bound to make you smile! ♪

♪ There's Spanish and French, ♪

♪ You're right, that's true! ♪

♪ Plus African, German ♪

♪ and Native American, ♪

♪ Irish and Italian too! ♪

♪ These and more in one big mix. ♪

♪ That's New Orleans through and through! ♪

♪ Hey-yeah! ♪

Fabuloso: Forgive me. I didn't realize

so many people from so many places

make up this wonderful city.

I understand now that you all have just as much

to love about this place as I do!

Bonjour: Oui, and we apologize to you, Señor,

and to you, Doctor Paloma...

Au Revoir: ...for not appreciating

what all people bring to New Orleans.

Bonjour: Is that a beignet?

Fabuloso: (gulp) Yes! Yes!

I love these French beignets

and I don't care who knows it!

(laughing)

Dr. Paloma: Haha!

I'm so glad you came to visit our city!

What time is the Circo performance tonight?

Fabuloso: Oh, no, no, not for a while,

we still have five minutes.

All: Five minutes?!

Andy: Wait, wait, everybody... STOP!!

Leo: Don't worry, Andy.

We heard everything Dr. Batiste has been saying.

I think we're just about ready for the show.

Andy: Copy that. Great news, Leo! We're on our way!

Fabuloso: Welcome to Circo Fabuloso,

Ladies and Gentlemen of New Orleans!

Crowd: (cheering)

Andy: Wow! That set really captures New Orleans!

And Dr. Batiste, thanks for helping us understand

the different influences of New Orleans!

Dr. Paloma: You're welcome, Andy.

I'm so glad Luna introduced us all.

Andy: Me too. Wait... where'd she go?

Andy: Luna? Luna!

Is it snowing?

Luna: Oh! Sorry, Andy.

These beignets are really powdery.

Isn't New Orleans wonderful?

Andy: Yeah! It's amazing

how people from Spain, France, Africa

and other places influenced this city!

There's so much more I want to know about

New Orleans, Louisiana!

Luna: There's more to know about any place we visit.
