A 211 in progress.

No kidding, Pete. You
ought to try me again.

The last time we played,

the only thing you could
sink was the cue ball.

No, I was just setting you
up for the big-money game.

Okay. I guess the only way to
shut you up is to play you again.

One-Adam-12,
One-Adam-12, see the man.

A 484 suspect.

1119 South Gage
via the supermarket.

One-Adam-12, roger.

- Hi, Parlow.
- Malloy, Reed.

How is it out there
in the big, bad city?

Somewhere between
a slow walk and a crawl.

- Arrest report's all made out.
- Is there a phone around here
I could use?

Over there.

How long you been moonlighting?

Oh, a couple of months now.

Every little bit helps.

Yeah, Mac. This is Reed.

Baby oil, diapers,
formula mixture.

Mac okay'd the booking.

Oh, please don't. You
don't have to, do you?

Just take it easy, sister.

It's all in the sack,
initialed and dated.

Mrs. Jessie Gaynor.

Can't you let me go?
Can't you just forget it?

I'm afraid we can't
do that, Mrs. Gaynor.

I don't have any
money. I told you.

She says she ran
out of food stamps.

Please? I've never done
anything like this before.

I'm sorry.

Well, we're all
sorry, Mrs. Gaynor,

but we're gonna have to
take you down to the station.

No! I can't go.
I can't go to jail.

Mrs. Gaynor, if this is your
first arrest, it's a misdemeanor.

It's a minor offense. I'm afraid
you're gonna have to come with us.

Come on.

The baby! My baby! No!

- Take it easy.
- No, please.

I had to. Don't
you see? I had to.

You better give us the keys.

- What?
- The keys to the car.

I don't have them. They're
there in the car, I guess.

They're not here now.

Mrs. Gaynor, would you
check inside your purse, please?

Go ahead. There's nothing in it.

"819 Golder Way"?

We used to live there.

Two cents and no keys.

This is your car, Mrs. Gaynor?

It's mine and the
finance company's.

The registration's
in the glove box.

There. There.

It's all right. Mommy's here.

Mommy's here.

That's hers.

"2902 Lakeview, Los Angeles."

Is that your present
address, Mrs. Gaynor?

Where do you live now?

Well, nowhere.

Me and Poppy...
We looking right now.

Is there somebody we could
call for a duplicate set of keys?

No, I... It's just
the two of us.

Just me and the baby.

What about the baby's father?

No.

Do you have a friend you
could leave the baby with?

Look, she's mine. Nobody
can have her. Nobody.

Mrs. Gaynor, nobody's gonna
take your baby away from you.

I'll ask Parlow to
keep an eye on the car.

I can, can't I?

Keep the baby?

We'll have to see, Mrs. Gaynor.

We're transporting a
female suspect with baby

from 1119 South
Gage b*at to the station.

Our mileage: 624.5. Your time.

One-Adam-12, roger. 1000 hours.

- Did you run her?
- Yeah. No priors.

Okay, well, book her to S.B.I.

The child will have to be
taken to McClaren Hall.

That's gonna be rough, Mac,
separating her from the baby.

Yeah. Well, it
shouldn't be for long.

First beef, misdemeanor.
She'll probably pull

a suspended and probation.

Time-out for rear
echelon maintenance.

We still don't have a
current address on her.

I called the Shared
Finance Company.

It seems they've been looking
for her for the last three months.

They've been getting
sporadic payments ever since

she put $25 down on the car.

From the looks of that heap, it
wasn't worth any more than $25.

Yeah, well, she's been trying,
but they're still gonna repossess it.

What'd Mac have to say?

She goes to Central
and the baby to McClaren.

I tried to prepare her.

- How'd she take it?
- She doesn't have a dime,
no friends.

And she couldn't
make bail if she had to.

How would you take it?

Get your hands off me!

- Who do you think you're...
- Take it easy!

What are you doing?
Get the hands off me!

- Where's your prisoner?
- I left her in the bathroom.

She's gone, and so is the baby.

You were responsible
for a suspect in custody.

She was changing the baby.

I heard the disturbance in
the hall, and I went to help.

Well, there are always
people in the hall.

Now, you know, when you
have someone in custody,

you don't leave them for
any reason, no matter what.

I'm gonna write it up.

You'll probably be
disciplined by the captain.

Yes, sir. I'm
sorry. I was wrong.

Okay.

Hey, how'd it go?

No luck. She just
walked right out of here.

We circled searched.

She couldn't have taken a
cab. She was tapped clean.

Well, I think I
know why she split.

I just got a phone
call from a Mrs. Hardy.

Reported a child missing.

"Female, n*gro, age 10 months.

Last seen wrapped
in a yellow blanket."

Mrs. Hardy thinks her baby was
stolen by a couple she hired as sitters.

- She give you a description?
- Yeah. And names.

Mrs. Jessie Gaynor and
her husband Jack Gaynor.

The Gaynors picked the baby
up in their car late last night.

They were supposed to return it
this morning. Mrs. Hardy works nights.

Any ransom demand?

No.

It goes as suspicion
of child stealing for now.

And it goes to detectives.

Well, you might as
well get back on patrol.

Thanks, Mac.

Mac said that Mrs. Hardy
told him she hired a couple.

Maybe that explains
the missing car keys.

Her husband stayed with the
baby while she went into the market

and took off when
he saw us pull up.

Any unit in the

245 Crenshaw at the warehouse.

Unit handling, identify.

We're right on top of that.

This is One-Adam-12.
We'll handle the code 30.

One-Adam-12, roger.

Probably got in this
way without a key.

Something tripped the alarm.

I'll get some backup
to cover the front.

Hold it!

Hands up. Up!

Just stand still now.

Good boy.

You got a partner?

You, uh, got a partner.

Call him. Call him and
tell him everything's cool.

Look, boy, my buddy's in there,

and he's coming out in a
minute, and he's coming out easy.

So you just better
call your partner,

and nobody's gonna get hurt.

Otherwise...

Brinkman!

There's nothing back here!

What's... What's the matter?
He... He lost his voice?

He's probably out
front. He can't hear me.

This is a pretty stupid move.

If push comes to shove,

you'll make a
pretty good hostage.

Toss it out!

Hey!

A little further to your left.

Hey, his name ain't Brinkman.

You're right. It isn't.

Hey, you guys hear the
update on that arrest last night?

- Mrs. Gaynor?
- Yeah.

I just came from detectives,
and on top of shoplift

and child stealing, we now
have a possible kidnapping.

Mrs. Hardy just got
a demand for $2,000.

That doesn't smell right. The way
Mrs. Gaynor was toward that baby,

I don't think she'd be
interested in ransom.

Yeah, well, the guy
that called Mrs. Hardy

said he could arrange for her to
get the baby back for the two grand.

Now, he may just be an
outsider trying to cash in.

We're still calling
it child stealing.

Yeah, well, that makes
more sense, Mac.

Say, how'd the big
pool game go last night?

I buried him. No contest.

Let's get to roll
call, hot sh*t.

One-Adam-12, day watch clear.

One-Adam-12, clear, and a call.

See the woman. A
landlord-tenant dispute.

229 G Street. Code 2.

One-Adam-12, roger.

Hold it now. Hold it.

Take it easy. Come on.

Who's inside there?

It's Elword Staff, the manager.

- Yeah? Who is it?
- Police officer.

- Who called you?
- What's your name, mister?

I'm Elword Staff. I
manage this place.

He's long gone.

- Who's long gone,
Mr. Staff?
- Gaynor.

You try to be nice to people,

you try to do them a favor,
and what does it get you?

Listen, Officer, if you find
that woman's husband,

I'll press every
charge in the book.

Where is the baby, Mrs. Gaynor?

I don't know.

How much back rent you
owe me? Come on. How much?

- We would've paid.
- What?

That no-good freeloading husband of yours
never turned a day's work in his life.

- Now, stop jiving the man.
- He couldn't get a job.

I offered him a job

cleaning out this place
around here, didn't I?

Now, what did he do?
He quit on me, didn't he?

Yeah. You cheated on
him. You didn't pay him.

I deducted it from
what you owed.

All right. That's enough.

Lazy trash.

Just look at what this
man did to my room!

You going to jail, girl,
and it's a good thing.

When he found out
we had the baby,

he called Mrs. Hardy
and tried to get money.

Now, you're not gonna
believe that trash, are you?

He called her, and we
heard him, and that's...

That's not so!

They come here with their
hands out, asking to use my car,

and when I refuse,

he starts arguing
with me like I owe him.

Then he hits me and
he takes the keys.

Where's your car parked?

Well, it's on the street,
but he must've stolen it.

I looked out the
window. It wasn't there.

- What kind of a car is it?
- It's a yellow '67 Nova.

I'm not no monster. I
know they've been having

a tough time of it,
and I try to help out.

I even carry them on the rent.

But...

I just kind of hate to see
them having a tough go of it.

Why the sudden change
of heart, Mr. Staff?

He's gone and got scared you'll
stick him with that ransom call.

You shut your mouth, girl.

All right. Knock it off.

What's the license
number of your car?

It's, um...

Here. My insurance card.

You give me a description again.

Well, he's about 6'2" his build,

black hair and brown
eyes and a moustache.

What was he wearing?

Salvation Army.

Was blue work pants and, um,

um, a suntan shirt.

And he's about 25.

Suspect has the victim described
as a female n*gro, 10 months.

Suspect last seen five
minutes ago in the vicinity

of 229 Chase Street.

Possibly driving a stolen
yellow '67 Chevy Nova, four-door.

California license
Victor-Tom-Ida-242.

- One-Adam-12...
- Look, I don't mind
going with you fellas,

but I don't wanna
press any charges.

No, sir. I don't wanna do that.

I... I'm your friend, Jessie.

Well, okay, Pete.

Detectives will take
the manager's statement

and try to sort out
who called whom

and when and what about.

You and Reed take Mrs. Gaynor
over to S.B.I. and book her.

Anything more from Mrs. Hardy?

She came in about a half an
hour ago. There's nothing new.

She's with detectives now.

Jessie, how is Poppy?

I'm sorry.

We trusted you. We
thought you were our friend.

Why did you do it?

We tried to have a baby,

and we couldn't.

We tried to adopt, and
they said we was too poor.

Too poor, they said.

All those beautiful babies,
and we couldn't have one.

Well, you have four children,
and Poppy was so sweet.

We... We just thought...

Can you understand?

I can't.

And I can't forgive
you. I just can't.

I guess we made a big mess.

Yeah. And it would've
helped if you hadn't run.

Mister, we've been
running all our lives.
