FEMALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO: One-Adam-. One-Adam-, a in progress.

One-Adam-, handle code .

[SIREN WAILING]

What'd you bring today?

Tuna sandwich.

I figured as much. It doesn't smell like

the liver-wurst you had yesterday.

Wait'll you see how much money I save, Pete.

-You won't laugh then. -I'm not laughing now.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One Adam-. At community beach. A -W.

One Adam-, roger.

[PEOPLE TALKING INDISTINCTLY]

Looks like we're not gonna win a popularity contest today.

Miss?

Hmm?

Oh, go away.

I got a better idea.

Yeah?

Why don't you tell us what happened

to the rest of your bathing suit?

[LAUGHS] I'm expressing myself.

I'm a free spirit. A beautiful free spirit.

I love the sun.

Is that your purse and towel?

I suppose you're gonna bust me, huh?

Hey, what gives?

They're gonna take me in, Artie.

Yeah?

Just put that on, miss.

Move in a little, will ya?

Hey you, don't ya want your picture in the paper?

Are you a news photographer?

Me? No. I'm her press agent.

Okay.

-[CROWD CHEERING] -I'm ready.

All right, put the camera down.

Do you have any identification?

Uh, Tammy Warren. W-a-r-r-e-n.

You guys' be sure and spell her name right, huh?

Shouldn't take me more than half an hour

to get these negatives down to the city desk.

And what's your name?

Art Phillips. But I don't want any publicity.

Is this your present address?

That's right.

Well, aren't you going to arrest me?

That'll be up to the City Attorney.

What do you mean?

He'll decide that after we submit an application for complaint.

Here's your license.

You said it couldn't miss.

You said I'd make the front pages.

You crumb,

the only thing I'll get out of this is a bad case of sunburn!

How much do you figure you'll save by bringing your lunch?

Oh, about to bucks a week?

When have we spent that much a week on lunch?

It adds up Pete, especially in the places you pick for lunch.

A touch of class never hurt anybody.

Hey. Take a right and come back up the alley.

What do you got?

Guy in the phone booth doesn't look right.

He's still there.

He's acting like a bookie.

He's ripping it off.

Hello, Elaine?

I won't be home for dinner tonight.

It's a business meeting.

One Adam-, clear.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One Adam-, clear.

All units on all frequencies stand by.

One Mary-One is in pursuit.

DEACON:Westbound on Venice Way approaching Riviera

in pursuit of a yellow dune buggy, license Ida Charles King.

MALE DISPATCHER: One Mary-One is in pursuit of a yellow dune buggy,

westbound on Venice Way, approaching Riviera.

One Mary-One, what is the vehicle wanted for?

DEACON:Wanted for speed only.

One Mary-One. Now crossing Bayside.

If that dune buggy makes the beach, he'll never get him.

MALE DISPATCHER:One Mary-One, Ida Charles King is a Wilshire stolen.

[SIREN WAILING]

Get your hands away from your body.

Come on out where we can see ' em.

Okay, out of the car. And put your hands behind your head.

Get in and sit there.

Okay. Take him away. I'll book him.

[CHUCKLES]

Deacon, how about a thank you?

After all, we caught him for you.

Caught him! I put him right in your pocket.

Look, fellas, show a little more appreciation

or I'll take my future business to Wells.

[LAUGHS]

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One Adam-. See the woman, .

Phone calls. Baybridge road. Apartment four.

One Adam-, roger.

The way the calls are coming in today,

we'll never get Code .

That's just another advantage of bringing your lunch, Pete.

Why don't you just go ahead and dig in.

No, I'll wait.

-CARLA: Who's there? -Police.

Come in. Please. I'm Carla Rogers.

I've been getting some terrible phone calls.

Someone threatening you, Miss Rogers?

It was such a shock.

I just picked up the phone and said "Hello"

and suddenly there was this man's voice on the other end.

He said terrible things.

Disgusting, obscene.

How many calls did you get?

Three. Two before I called the police.

And one just before you knocked on the door.

[PHONE RINGING]

Hello?

Do you have any idea who it might be, Miss Rogers?

Someone who's awfully sick.

Have you reported this to the telephone company?

I guess I should.

Chances are they'll advise you to have your number changed.

[SIGHS] Okay, do that, but how can you catch this man?

Make him stop?

There is a way. It's not pleasant,

but it's about the only thing that has a chance of working.

What is it?

If he calls again, make a date with him.

Not here. In some public place.

Then call this number and ask for Investigation Division.

We'll make a report of this.

If you do call they'll arrange to stake out your meeting.

Well...

Isn't there any other way?

There are several other things you might try, get a whistle.

When he calls, blow the whistle as hard as you can into the phone.

It'll sure give him something else to think about.

Also, you might arrange to have someone else answer your calls.

Maybe a service.

Or an a*t*matic phone answer device.

Well, I've got to do something.

Well, Miss Rogers, the first thing you should do is

when you're dressed like this,

you should keep your drapes closed.

You mean this leotard?

I always wear it when I'm doing my exercises.

Think she'll set up a meeting?

I doubt it.

At least she closed the drapes.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One Adam-.

See the man. down. East Front.

One Adam, roger.

-Hello, boys. -Hi, Dave. What do you got?

Oh, another one.

Getting so anyone can wander in these days.

Staggers in, loaded to the gunnels.

Orders a bowl of chili and then passes out before he can eat it.

How about a bite to eat?

No, thanks, not right now.

Whip you up a chili dog or a cheeseburger in no time.

Okay, fella. Come on.

Oh, he's out like a light.

Cone on. Wake up.

He's dead.

Dave, do you know him?

He's just another bottle hound.

Call the coroner.

-Use your phone? -Yeah.

-This gonna take long? -No.

What's your last name, Dave?

Carson...

Look, how long is this gonna take?

Just a few minutes.

We have a DB at East Front.

Maybe we can haul him out back.

Thing like this ain't good for business.

Leave him alone.

How long ago did he come in here?

I dunno. An hour ago, maybe.

DB at East Front Street. Coroners been notified.

Thank you.

I wanna get him out of here.

The Coroner and Detectives will be here in just a few minutes.

Look, I didn't ask the bum to conk out here!

I've got cash customers coming in.

This is the height of my business hour.

A place like Dave's is a perfect reason for brown-baggin' it.

You wanna try for Code now?

No. Fact is, I just lost my appetite.

One Adam-, clear.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One Adam-. Clear.

-Pete. Grab a right. -What do you got?

There's a pumpkin in the alley.

A pumpkin?

Yeah. Hurry up, will ya.

That the pumpkin?

Looks like the same one.

[HONKING]

Do you want me to call in and report a mile an hour pursuit?

Just wait till we get to the next street, I'll pull alongside.

[SIREN WAILING]

I got an idea, Pete.

Why don't I jump out and go in foot pursuit?

Just keep your safety belt fastened.

You're not gonna try another end run, are you?

I think it's time to punt.

Need help, officers?

I'll let you guys handle it from here.

I've already booked three pumpkins this week.

Deacon, you've turned into a real ball of fire

since they took off your training wheels.

[LAUGHING]

Step up on the curb.

I heard the siren, and it scared me half to death.

I knew I should stop, but not in the alley.

Is this your pumpkin, ma'am?

I operate the "Peter Pumpkin Eater" Day Nursery.

I was just bringing this playhouse home here

while the schoolyard is being resurfaced.

Do you want me to take it back?

No, ma'am. You don't have to take it back.

But, for safety's sake, when you do take it back

put it on a trailer.

Oh, I'm sorry. Of course I will.

May I see your drivers license please?

Well, would you take it out of the wallet?

Say uh...

As long as you fellows are here,

I wonder if you'd do me a favor.

Help me push the pumpkin up into my driveway.

[CHUCKLES]

Don't feel bad, Pete.

It was a fair chase and you lost, that's all.

-It could happen to anyone. -Before you start on me

just think of what it's gonna be like at the station

when Deacon gets back with this caper.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One Adam-. An ADW in progress.

Bay Ridge Road. Handle Code .

[SIREN WAILING] One Adam-, roger.

That's Carla Roger's building.

Inside, it's horrible. All that screaming.

All right, ma'am. Just calm down.

It was quiet. Except for Carla's record player.

Then, this terrible crashing sound

like all the dishes were being smashed or something.

She screamed.

Over and over, then it got very quiet.

My son banged on her door. I told him to stay away.

Not to get involved.

Where is he now?

He's out back watching the rear entrance.

Did any of you see him know what he looks like?

No.

-Let's go. -I'll take the back.

Woman's son's out back. No one's gone past him.

Kick it.

Jim!

Take it easy. What happened, Miss Rogers?

This is Officer Reed. One Adam-.

We need an ambulance and backup

at Bay Ridge Road.

An ADW victim. Suspect's still on the premises...

Right.

I just saw him he ran upstairs.

He tried to sneak out the back, and I yelled at him.

Can you describe the man?

Sure. He's got on a jump suit. Sort of blue colored.

Like one of those repairmen wear.

That's fine.

She's hurt bad, huh?

We'll take care of this. You go outside, okay?

Sure.

Just lie still. A doctor will be here in a few minutes.

Don't try to move. Do you understand?

Yes.

Adam-'s got the outside covered.

What do ya got, Pete?

ADW suspect wearing a blue repair man's outfit.

You guys check this floor.

Jim and I'll take third floor and the roof.

Right.

Hold it!

Leave me alone!

You stay away!

Don't touch me!

Come away from there.

It's her fault!

She wanted me to see!

She went around in that thing. Every day.

She wanted me to see but she wouldn't talk to me.

I called but she kept hanging up on me.

Sure. We understand.

What's your name?

My name?

Ted Hunter.

She's... It's all her fault.

That's right, Ted. It was her fault.

What?

I mean that certain girls get their kicks just turning guys on.

Any guy.

She's not like that. Not her.

Come on, Hunter. Wise up.

We see girls like that all the time.

The streets are full of 'em.

No. No!

Not her. You take that back!

Take it back! Take it back!

Ah!

All I wanted her to do was talk to me.

The ambulance driver says the girl was more bruised

and frightened than hurt.

She's going to be all right.

He said it all started with watching her

do her exercises by the window.

He probably never realized his last look at that window

would be from the back seat of a police car.

What you got?

Another advantage of eating in restaurants,

the suspects don't sit on your lunch.
