-Bye, Ms.-Bye.

Oh, Freddy,you still here?

Yes ma'am.

Something you wantto see me about?

What is it?What's on your mind?

Will you coach me, Mrs. Curtis?

Will I coach you?

In spelling.

Well, why in spelling?

So I win.

Win what?

Spelling bee.

Oh.

Well, uh,

Freddy, you've never shown anyparticular aptitude for spelling.

Will you pleasecoach me, Mrs. Curtis?

I'm afraid you don't realizehow much work that would be.

You'd have to stay afterschool nearly every day,

and so would I.

Will you, Mrs. Curtis?

Well, I-I-I'll thinkabout it, Freddy.

Now, I think right nowyou better run along home.

Uh, Freddy?

Freddy, do you realize

in order to enterin spelling bee

you're supposed to havean average of at least ?

And you haven't got an average of in anything much less spelling.

So why would you wantto enter a Spelling Bee?

So somebody will look at me.

[music]

[vaccum cleaner working]

[vaccum cleaner turns off] [laugh]

Oh, Hank,put that plug back.

- When do I got it..-Are sure to call me

to tell me this is Friday?

Well honestly by the...[interrupts by a kiss]

- Hi.- Hi.

And how are thelittle monsters today?

Oh, don't even mention them.

And Hank, bringthat thing back here.

-I got to get to it.-Do it later

Hank, please, I don't wantto do it later. I wo...

Later

Yes, sir.

All week longI look forward to Friday.

And when it finallyhere I can't enjoy it

because I'm thinking about Monday.

You've got all Saturdayand Sunday to forget about it.

Monday and Freddy.

Who is Freddy?

Freddy Kaufman

He's one of a boys in my class.

What does he do?

Throw spitballs and drawpictures in the blackboard?

No.

He doesn't. Hedoesn't do anything.

That's just a Freddy is a blank.

But he stayed afterschool today to ask me

if I would coach himfor the Spelling Bee?

Spelling Bee you know that FreddyKaufman couldn't last one round.

Well, never mind Freddy.

Go change your things now.

We get out to dinner.

- Do I have to?- Well, it's Friday.

We always go outto dinner on Friday.

I know. But I don't see whyI have to go all dressed up

just to go to Phil's Diner.

Phil's Diner?

We're going to the Lake Shore Inn.

I'm going to buyyou a whole lobster.

And if you good, I may throwa bottle of champagne. [laughs]

Oh, the childrenweren't that bad, honey.

Well, this has nothingto do with your job.

What do you mean?

It's mine we are celebrating.

Hank!

You're looking ata new traffic manager.

You got your promotion!

And the raise.

Oh, darling! It's so wonderful.

- Oh, I'm so glad.-Well, it is but..

We're going up for it.

I know you did.

Now go changed your thing.

All right. I won't be long.

I may make thattwo bottles of champagne.

Hank!

That means I can quit teaching.

Ah, you sure can.

Just think of it.

No more Mondays,No more Fridays.

I can sleep'till noon if I want to.

You can sleep allday if you want to

Oh Hank!

And we can have pot roastin the middle of the week.

And I can let itcook for hours.

I'll get fat.

Seriously.

Do you care if I quitat the end of this term?

Honey, you're the teacher.

Yeah, but not for long.

We have dollar and cent.

I would like to contribute to cents that will make the Dollars.

that means we have enoughmoney to buy our rosebush.

Now, congratulations for that!

Mrs. Curtis?

Yes Sally.

I think we have to plant ourrosebush outside this window

so that all the fifth gradersfor years and years and years

can look out and see it.

Well, I think that'sa very good idea.

The fourth grade isplanting a walnut tree.

Oh yes, there's a realcampaign going on

to beautify the school grounds.

Yeah. The kindergartenis going to plant Cabs

and it's all over the place.

[children laughing]That would be nice.

Now, as I told you,

our planting ceremony is set totake place two weeks from today.

It's going to be a very nice affairand your parents are all invited

Yes, Bobby?

Mrs. Curtis.

The class representativewill have to plant the rosebush,

- isn't that right?-Yes.

So he's going to haveto do some digging, huh?

I mean, isn't he, Ms. Curtis?

Well a little bit anyway.

That's why it ought to be a boy.

Mrs. Curtis.

That's not fair.Girls can dig, too.

I know.

That's why we're goingto hold an election.

But the girls will win.

because there's moregirls in this class,

Girls always vote for girls.

Well, there's only one moregirl than boy in this class.

After all, no one knowshow I'm going to vote.

Can satisfy you, Bobby?

Yes ma'am.

Good.

We'll hold the election next Friday.

Now will you please getout your arithmetic books.

You turn to pagefour, please. Column .

[music]

Audrey.

Oh Yes, Miss Forbes

Come in here.

Still working?

Well, I'll be finished in a minute.

I tried to see you acouple of times today,

but there's alwayssomeone in your office.

Yes, I know. They told me.

That's why I stopped in.

Are you in a hurry.

- No.- Good.

Uhh, do you rememberwhen I first took this job

I told you that I didn't intendto make teaching my career.

Well it's...

it was only supposed tobe for two or three years

until we beganhaving our family but-

Well, when we found out thereweren't going to be any children,

Then it was...

going to be until Hank was wellestablished in his work, that's all.

So, now stretched into..

long years.

Has it been that long?

It has indeed.

Audrey, you're the bestfifth grade teacher I ever had.

Thank you

But the point is...

Hank has finally gotten a promotionthat we've been waiting for.

Oh I'm so glad.

Yeah so are we.

Audrey

That doesn't meanthat you're leaving us.

Yes, it does.

I'm uh...

I'm leaving at theend of this term.

I'm sorry but I haveput in eight years and

Now I'm quiet willingto someone else to..

carry on from here.

But what someone else?

Audrey.

I wonder if you have any ideaof the shortage of teachers.

I do.

But I also know that I am sickto death for correcting papers

and playing policemen andnursemaid and part time mother

to a room fullof noisy children.

I know how you feel.

Remember I used to be a teacher.

But there are awesomepositive aspects.

Name one.

You must be tired.

Well, is that yourfinal decision, Audrey?

Yes, it is.

Well, I'll see you in the morning.

Yes, Miss Forbes, in the morning.

[music]

[children playingand chattering]

[period bell rings]

[children chatteringand entering the class]

Very well, be seated class.

Before we start today, there issomething that I must tell you.

I wish I didn't have to, but it'ssomething that concerns all of us.

You, me, the entire fifth grade.

The money that wecollected for our Rosebush is

missing from my desk.

Someone took it.

I'd like to say right now that

all of us at some time in our liveshave done things that we regretted.

The important thingis to realize it in time.

So it doesn't damage our character.

So the one small incidentdoesn't repeat itself

and grow until it forms a habit.

A bad habit.

Now, there are times when amistake can help us to grow better.

If we own up to it,

see it as a mistakeand correct it ourselves.

That's what I wouldlike to see happen here.

I'm going to give the person.

Every chance possibleto return the money.

And of course no one elsein the class will ever know

who that person is.

I would like to see thisday fifth grade problem.

I would also like to see us solve itright here in this classroom so...

I'm going to wait until Friday.

If the money is not returnedby then I'll have no choice.

I'm going to havereported to Mrs. Forbes.

Now, um, who would like toread our thought of the day.

Anne.

Honesty is the best policy.

Thank you, Anne.

[Singing] Work, work nevershrug, there is work for all.

Hank

What's the matter? Is it cranky?

I got a headache.

I'm sorry.

Well, I'm sorry.

What's the matter?

You've been crankyfor two or three days.

I know

Just going to haveto tell her, that's all.

Tell who?

Mrs. Forbes

Oh I just hate to, it'slike admitting defeat.

I was so sure whoever took thatmoney would return it by now.

I'm not a very good teacher.

Now wait a minute.

It's not your fault.

No?

- No, it isn't.- Oh, Hank.

A good teacher should beable to establish a...

closer relationship with thechildren than even the parents can't

Because it's on a higher level.

There's nothing to dowith pride and ambition.

Oh I know, honey, aren'tyou making too much of it?

Just becausesome kid took dollar?

No, I don't think so.That's not the point, Hank.

The thing I'm afraid of is thatthat kid is going to need help

and isn't going to get it.

Well, you did what you could.

Did I?

Maybe if I'd beena better teacher,

it wouldn't happenedin the first place.

The Mayan

Indians also

built

several important

cities

and developed

a high degree of

culture.

These cities contain many great

stone temples

carved with the

images of gods and sacred animals.

Alright class,you're being rude.

It's "Sacred Animal"Freddy go ahead.

[period bell ringing]

Just keep your seats, please.

Now those of you are going toeat lunch in the playground,

would you be sure andclean up the litter after you?

Alright. Class is dismissed.

Mrs. Curtis?

Yes, Sally.

About the rosebush money.

What about the rosebush money?

Well.

Do you know any about it?

Yes, ma'am,I think so.

You think sobut not sure?

Well not exactly.

Did you take it?

Oh No ma'am, not me.

I'm honest. NeverI wouldn't take it.

No, I didn't think you would.

Then what's this all about?

Well, I've been thinkingthat all the kids in the class,

- Yes- And it seems to me..

Well, I don't liketo be a tattletale.

Then don't be.

You stop right there, Sally. You're just guessing,

and that's not fair to anyone.

Yes, ma'am.

Even if you didn't know,I wouldn't want you to tell me.

The only person Iwant to talk to about this

is the person who actually took themoney. Now, do you understand that?

Yes ma'am.

What's been going on in this class? All this guessing and whispering?

Yes, ma'am.

I was going to stop. It'sgoing to stop right now.

And that has got to stopright now you understand?

I had hope for something better fromthis class, but I guess I was wrong.

However.

Probably shows morefailure on my part than on yours.

So this afternoon I am goingto Mrs. Forbes and report it.

Perhaps she can succeedwith you where I have failed.

Mrs. Curtis?

Yes, Freddy

Why don't we all search the room?

Well, I have alreadysearched the room several times.

However, if the class wishes todo so it's quite all right with me.

I found it.I found it.

[Children noising]

Excuse me. Look at meWhere did you find it, Freddy?

- In that little drawer.-Which one?

That one.

Oh, I see.

Well.

Well, bring it back tothe desk and we'll count it.

All right, children, back to your seats.

Right up here, Freddy.

Alright, give me that.

There's a dollar.

, , ,

Two dollars.

Well it's all here.

Our rosebush money has been found.

[Children Applauding]

All right.All right.

Now, since Freddy found the money

I nominate him to be theone to plan our rosebush.

I'll second promotion.

I move thenominations be closed.

I second promotion.

All in favor.

[Everyone agrees] Good

Young man, youhave just been elected.

Here.

I want you to take our money

and hold it for us soit won't get lost again.

Tonight, let's gosomeplace special for dinner.

Oh, come on. You'll feel better.

Don't thinkI'll ever feel better.

Now, Audrey, you're taking this too hard.

I can't help it.

To think of that poorkid I feel so guilty.

That's what I don't get.

It's not your faulthe's all mixed up.

No, no, no. I knew it.

But I didn't help himand that is my fault.

But you told mehe didn't have a chance.

That's not the point Hank.

Good teacher wouldhave helped him anyway.

And what did I do? I just brushedhim off. I just brushed him off.

But how could you haveknown it would lead to this?

Well, I don't know.

I should've known.

All I could think ofI was how tired I was.

What's the matterwith the kid, anyway?

He needs attention.

That's why he did this, Hank.

He doesn't evenknow why he did it, either.

Just knows now thatyou did something bad.

And if it's left that way,it'll grow until he'll be bad.

I don't think I'll ever getover the sight of that kid

standing in that door saying,so someone will look at me.

[doorbell ringing] I'll get it.

Yes?

Is Mrs. Curtis home?

Come on in.

You have a visitor, dear.

Freddy?

This is Freddy Kaufman.

This is Mr. Curtis, Freddy.

How you do?

Hi, Freddy.

Well, I have some work to do.

Come in. Come in here.

Come here.Sit down.

I'll get you some Lemonadesomething nice for you.

No ma'am.

Mrs. Curtis

I came here to tell you.

Tell me what?

Did I come in themiddle of your dinner?

Oh, no.

No, no we always go out fordinner on Friday nights, Freddy.

Oh. Well,

Mrs. Curtis

Yes?

I took the money.

Yes, I know you did.

You knew all the time?

Well, I knew it wasn'tin that little drawer

because I had alreadylooked there before.

So you had to have put it there.

I saw you go straight to it.

Have you told Mrs.Forbes that I'm a thief?

Well, you're not a thief, Freddie.

But I took the money.

But when you took the money, you...

You didn't spend it, did you?

No ma'am.

No.

Freddy,

Why do you think you took it?

I don't know.

I guess I justwanted to be a Hero.

You are Hero.

But you didn't have tocome here and tell me the truth.

But you did.

And that's a real courage.

Real Courage!

When you ask me totake care of the money.

I felt awful.

I finally can understand it.

I know the only reason they electedme to plant the rose bush was

Because they thinkI found the money.

Then...

tomorrow suppose youjust declined the honor

and we'll let it go at that.

Mean I really don'thave to tell them?

No, of course not.

I explained that toyou in the classroom.

I don't know why Idid it, Mrs. Curtis.

I've been tryingto figure it out.

But you know what I think?

I think you did itto get attention.

I did?

Sure, everybody wants attention.

But now we know that...

Attention is no good unless wedo something to deserve it, is it?

No ma'am.

No.

Well never mind.

You deserve attention whenyou win that Spelling Bee.

Spelling Bee?

You and I are going to havea lot of work to do, young man.

You gonna coach me, Mrs. Curtis?

Every day after school.

You think you can stand it?

- Yes ma'am!- Good!

Now, how about that lemonade?

No ma'am. I- I think Ibetter be going home now.

Oh well, Alright Freddy.

Oh, I've forgot

-There's the money.-Oh.

Oh no. I gavethat to you for safekeeping.

Remember?

I trust you.

Yes ma'am.

Did you hear that?

I heard it. You feel up forgoing out to dinner now?

Oh, Hank I justfeel up for anything.

You know what I'm gonna do?

I'm going to goout in the kitchen.

I'm going to cook you thegreatest meal you ever ate.

[kiss]Well

Darling,

Do you realize?

if I can help Freddie that way,

think of what I can dofor some of those other kids.

Remember, I'll see the littlekid who has the reading problem.

I told you about her.

And then Johnny, his brother was an honor student.

Oh, his family never let himforget it for one single minute.

And next yearI get Suffy Coatsman.

She's the one who offered...

Next year,

Oh, Hank.

Do you mind?

Oh, Darling!

I just have won.

I might turn into avery good teacher.
