All the water's gone. It's just a dry hole.

And listen. Loud and crunchy.

Well, you're right, tiny. It is dry. That's what happens

When we don't get rain for several weeks.

But don't we need water?

All living things need water, but sometimes a long dry

But it hasn't been dry for that long. We've lost some

From and lots of green leaves that aren't dry at all.

New conditions around you.

No. She's usually up in her tree, playing.

Right. Cindy's adapting to the heat by keeping cool and

Conserving energy. That means resting.

And dinosaurs adapt to droughts, too. They use less

Water, or they get more water from their food.

Like mr. Lambeosaurus and his leaves?

Our leaves actually, but, uh, yes, buddy. All that

Happens in a major drought that goes on for months or years.

And the drought won't end until it rains!

Well, bless my scales and pull my tail. You pteranodons

Know a lot about droughts.

But, mr. Conductor, how does a drought start?

Excellent question, tiny. A drought is a problem with the

Water cycle. Normally rain falls to the earth. Then over

Time heat makes water evaporate back up into the atmosphere.

That water builds up in clouds, and when the clouds are full

Enough, the water comes back down as rain, but sometimes the

Cycle isn't so smooth, and it doesn't rain very much. When

That happens, things get very dry, and that's a problem

Because living things need water to survive.

Why?

Well, tiny, the truth is water is important to

Everything in our nature community--plants, herbivores,

And carnivores.

So what happens in a big drought? Does everything die?

Most of the time, creatures either adapt or move away to

Find water, except creatures that can survive in very dry

Weather of course.

What kind of creature can live during a drought?

Insects mostly. Some of them don't need much water at all.

Even some plants are made for droughts like a cactus.

Hi, there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist. Do you know

Something that every living creature on earth needs? Water!

From dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago to us

Humans living today, we all need water. Most of the water used by

Land animals and plants comes from rain. Some years, it rains

A lot, and other years, well, it hardly rains at all.

When it doesn't rain much for a long time, months, or even

Years, we say that a place is having a drought. During a

Drought, lakes and rivers start to disappear, the ground dries

Up, and the trees and other plants start to die. Animals and

Plants that live in deserts like camels and cactus have the

Ability to store water in their bodies, and they can go a long

Time without any rain, but most plants and animals that don't

Live in deserts really struggle when there isn't enough water

Around. During a drought, some animals stay put and try to make

The best of it. Eventually the rain returns, and the animals

And plants come back, too. So we know that dinosaurs had to deal
