The leaves are very dry.

Well, you're right, tiny. It is dry. That's what happens

When we don't get rain for several weeks.

But don't we need water?

All living things need water, but sometimes a long dry

Spell happens. It's called a drought.

But it hasn't been dry for that long. We've lost some

Little puddles, but we have plenty of bigger ones to drink

From and lots of green leaves that aren't dry at all.

Did you say you have green leaves that aren't dry at all?

Yes, i--larry, what are you doing with my leaves?

Ohh! These aren't just leaves, my friend. Fresh leaves

Are sources of water. Plant eaters like me can get lots of

Water by eating these beauties.

Yeah, but you're not eating my leaves, you're picking them.

So I can bring them with me!

Now that the drought's hit, we have to head out to look for a

New home where there's water.

A new home?

Sure. That's what dinosaurs do sometimes when a drought

Happens. They move away.

Well, big droughts make things so dry that sometimes

Dinosaurs have to move away.

See? There you go.

But this isn't a big drought at all.

Your father is right. This is just a little drought. No

One has to move away anywhere.

So stop taking all my leaves!

Wow! I just realized with us moving away from here to find

Water, that might be the last time you yell at me for taking

No. She's usually up in her tree, playing.

Right. Cindy's adapting to the heat by keeping cool and

Conserving energy. That means resting.

And dinosaurs adapt to droughts, too. They use less

Water, or they get more water from their food.

Like mr. Lambeosaurus and his leaves?

Our leaves actually, but, uh, yes, buddy. All that

Happens in a major drought that goes on for months or years.

This one will be over once the rain comes.

Oh! I just had a wonderful idea. What if we turn this

Drought into a family adventure and camp out at the big pond?

Are we moving there?

Water at the big pond, so it's the perfect time to visit.

But, mr. Conductor, how does a drought start?

Excellent question, tiny. A drought is a problem with the

Water cycle. Normally rain falls to the earth. Then over

Time heat makes water evaporate back up into the atmosphere.

That water builds up in clouds, and when the clouds are full

Enough, the water comes back down as rain, but sometimes the

Cycle isn't so smooth, and it doesn't rain very much. When

That happens, things get very dry, and that's a problem

Because living things need water to survive.

Why?

Well, tiny, the truth is water is important to

Everything in our nature community--plants, herbivores,

And carnivores.

So what happens in a big drought? Does everything die?

Most of the time, creatures either adapt or move away to

Find water, except creatures that can survive in very dry

Weather of course.

What kind of creature can live during a drought?

Insects mostly. Some of them don't need much water at all.

Even some plants are made for droughts like a cactus.

But if our plants don't get water--

Oh, not to worry, shiny. All we need is a big enough rain,

And the drought will be history.

Let's compare some fish-eating creatures from the mesozoic era

With a few animals living today.

Pteranodons probably flew above the water until they spotted a

Fish and then dove down to grab it, using their long beaks. Now

Here's a modern bird called the brown pelican. It also flies,

Dives, and grabs its prey with a long beak. Do you remember how

Megaraptor caught fish? Now check out these bears. They sit

On the edge of a waterfall and grab fish right out of the water

Or even out of midair. Wow!

Animals living in the age of dinosaurs probably caught fish

Using the same methods that animals used today. Ok.

Remember, get outside, get into nature, and make your own

Discoveries.
