Whoo-hoo!

[engine chugging slows]

[giggles]

I love singing,

but some kinds of singing

aren't so easy to learn

as I found out

when I was working in Italy.

[whistle toots]

All aboard for a big adventure.

[Thomas]

"Too Loud, Thomas!"[both]

♪ La ♪♪ Tra la la lala la la ♪

- [whistle toots]

- [cheering]

Why, thank you.

No, really, thank you.

Oh, okay.

Just once more.

[both]

♪ Tra la la la ♪

[Thomas sings out of tune]

What did you do that for?

- What?

- Make that... that noise.

I was trying to sing

in that way you two sing.

[out of tune]

♪ La la la ♪

But we sing Italian...

♪ Opera ♪

You're just shouting.

Oh.

Was is that bad?

- Uh...

- Yes, but don't worry,

- we can teach you.

- Oh.

Lesson one:

Warming up is important,

so you don't strain your voice.

♪ Warming up, up, up, up, up ♪

[out of tune]

♪ Warming up, up, up ♪

Lesson two:

Singing should make

your audience feel something.

Like this.

♪ Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, happy ♪[Beppe]

♪ Sad ♪- ♪ So, so sad ♪

- [sobbing]

Excited.

[whistle blows]

♪ La, la, la ♪

[screeching]

♪ La ♪

[crying]

Oh, dear.

I think I scared her off.

Well, you did

make her feel something.

Lesson three:

There are so many notes

to choose from.

♪ Low, low, low ♪♪ High, high, high notes ♪

[out of tune]

♪ La la la ♪

But, uh,

maybe not those notes.

The problem is

you're singing too loudly.

You have to be careful or you

really will strain your voice.

Okay, okay.

Yeah, I think

I just need more practice.

[gasps]

♪ Thank youfor the singing lessons ♪

We did our best, Beppe,

but not everyone is cut out

to sing opera.

[out of tune]

♪ La la la ♪

[chuckles]

Oh, if I keep practicing

like this,

I'll be an opera sensation

in no time.

Oh, imagine that.

[train engine chugging]

[orchestra tuning]

[orchestra playing]- ♪ La la la ♪♪ La la la ♪

- [cheering]

- [applause]

[all] Bravo.

Encore.

- No more, no more.

- Huh?

- No more.

- Oh...

But I need to practice

if I'm ever going to sing opera

like Lorenzo and Beppe.

[out of tune]

Thomas, you're very loud.

[vocalizing terribly]

[cows moo]

[vocalizing terribly]

[whistle toots]

[shed rumbling]

[screeches]

[glass cracks]

[coughs]

Oh, no.

My voice.

[whimpers]

Lorenzo was right.I had been singing too loudly.It strained my voice.And even worse,I couldn't talk.

Thomas, you need to take

these cars to Stefano.

But it's very important

he waits for Gina.

She has cargo for him too,

so you must tell him

to wait for her.

- Okay?

- [raspy whisper] Yes.

[wheezing]

Okay.

- Eh?

- [whistle toots]

Enough with the whistling,

Thomas.

Just be sure to tell Stefano

to wait for Gina.

[Thomas]

How was I goingto tell Stefano about Ginawithout being able to talk?All I could do was hopemy voice would return in time.

[whistle toots]

Thomas, my good friend.

[wheezing]

Ciao.But my voice didn't return.I said,

ciao,

Thomas.

[screeches softly]

Huh? You're going

to have to speak up.

[whistle toots]

I'll see you later, Thomas.

[whistle toots]

Huh?

[screeching softly]

Oh... have you lost your voice?

[whistle toots]

What's that?

Look at the clock?

What's the time?

[groaning]

Ah, where are you going?

Thomas.

Wait.

[whistle toots excitedly]

Wait?

That's what

you're trying to tell me?

- To wait?

- [whistle toots]

- A-wait for what?

- [Gina] For me.

[whistle toots]

I've brought you more cargo.

[whistle toots excitedly]

You need to be careful using

your whistle like that, Thomas.

You don't want to break it.

[Thomas]

Luckily, my voicesoon started to come back.

I tried to tell you, Thomas,

opera is a delicate art.

I don't think opera singing

is for me, Lorenzo.

I'm going to leave it

to the experts from now on.

Good idea, Thomas.

You know, it's okay not to be

good at some things.

There are always other things

you can be good at.

Yes, like listening

to us perform.

Hmm, I'm not sure

about this one.

[whistle toots]

Have you ever wanted

to do something

that you just weren't

very good at?

I remember when Hugo wasdesperate to be able to flylike the airship.But in the end,he had to learn to be happystaying on the ground.I wanted to be able to singopera like Lorenzo and Beppe,but I found that it wasa lot harder than I thought.It's good to try new things,but it's not always easy.

Learning to sing opera

takes a very long time,

and if I try it again,

I'm going to try it

a little more softly

- so I won't hurt my voice.

- [whistle blows]
