Do you like building things?
When my friend Ruth,
the inventor, moved to Sodor,
I helped her build one of
the best inventions ever.

All aboard for a big adventure!

Thomas and theInventor's Workshop.It was a sunny day on Sodor,and I was hurryingto Ulfstead Castle,where the earl hada special job for me.

How are you doing?
- I'm good, thanks, Ruth.
Can't stop and chat,
though. Sorry.
The earl's got
an important job for me.
- [Earl]
Ho ho ho! Thomas.
Ruth
is
your important job.
I'd like you to show her
all around Sodor,
and help her find
a place to live.
- What do you say, Thomas?
- I'd love to help!

[upbeat music]
You know, Ruth, there are so
many brilliant places on Sodor,
I don't know how
you'll ever pick one.
- Ooh, Brendham.
Suddery!
Oh, what about--
- Norramby!
Norramby's lovely.
- They all sound great!
Where should we try first?
- Oh!

[foghorn blows,

Welcome to Arlesburgh Harbor!
Lovely seaside location,
and a fully working dock.
Perfect for any shipments
of parts or tools
or other inventor-y things.
- And just take a breath
of that sea air!

branch line!
- What's it like there?

And the search continues!

Stop!
That's the place!
- Huh?
[puzzling music]
Really?
- Uh-huh.
- But its sails are all broken,
its roof's falling in,
and there's a tree
growing out of the wall!
- I know!
It's perfect.
- Perfect?
It's old and useless.
- Just you wait and see.
[upbeat music]
[wood straining]
Whoa!
I'm okay!
[screws squeaking]
[owl hooting]

[tapping]

- What do you think
she's up to?
- I don't really know.
- [gasps]
Maybe she's trying
to make the old barn fly!
- Let's find out!
Ruth, what's all this
going to be?
- You'll see very soon, Thomas.
You won't believe
what these sails can power!
- [gasps]
Sail power?
[steam whooshing]
[upbeat music]
[whistle blows]
- Thomas!
- [laughs]
[propellers whirring]
Whoo-hoo! Wow!
See ya, Gordon!
- Thomas!
- Wah-hoo!
[welder crackles]
Huh?
[dreamy musical flourish]
[mask squeaks]
- Ta-da!
- Cool!
Uh...
Does it fly?
- Fly? Ha ha!
No, Thomas.
It's an electromagnetic
generator.
It will convert energy from
the sails into electricity!
All we need now is a blast
of power to get it started,
like a bolt of lightning!
- But how are you going
to make that happen?
There's no storm in sight!
- Oh, you'll see.
[harp flourish][upbeat music]
So if you go fast enough,
then that metal
will connect with that cable
and make a spark
just like lightning,
which will power the generator,
but only if you go fast enough.
[laughs]
Got it?
- Got it!
[determined music]♪ ♪
Ready, Ruth!
- Go for it!
[whistle toots]
[train engine chugging]
Faster, Thomas, faster!
- [straining]
[pressure gauge squealing]
[straining]

- [Ruth gasps]
It's working, Thomas!
You've powered the generator!
- You did it, Ruth!
- [laughs]
We did it, Thomas.
- The next day,I popped in to seehow Ruth was settlinginto her new home.
Oh, no.
The gate's stuck again.
Huh?

- Smooth drive through
the level crossing?
- That was you?
- Sure was!
My generator powers more
than just my workshop.
Your level crossing
is now fully a*t*matic,
thanks to the energy
all around us.
We can power almost anything!
- All thanks to you, Ruth,
Sodor's incredible,
imaginative inventor!

Have you ever thought
something was useless,
but then it turned out
to be very useful indeed?
[steam whooshing]
When I was in China,I thought I'd been givena useless old bit of woodto transport...but it turned out it wasa really important wheelthat delivered waterto the rice fields![calm music]When Ruth wanted to livein the old barnnext to the windmill,I thought that wasa silly idea!But, with a bit of workand creativity,she transformed the placeinto something really useful!

I learned that some things
might look old, broken,
or useless to start with,
but they can be made into
something useful and amazing.
