Phil: previously on "the amazing race"...

Go!

Families of set out from new york city

In a race for $ million.

We love new york! Whoo!

The gaghan family surged ahead.

Right now, we're in first place.

While the paolo family got lost in their home territory.

A new yorker gets lost in manhattan.

We're so stupid!

Teams retraced the steps of george washington

Crossing the delaware river.

Almost there.we're close, though.

Keep on going.

Respect the flag, buddy.

Phil: but the black family had trouble.

Austin, stop playing.

Come on, austin. Do what you're doing.

At the detour...

[Indistinct yelling]

...the weavers had a close call.

[Yelling shrilly]

That's ok. [Indistinct]

[Crash]i'm ok.

While the aiellos faltered.

We don't need to stop right now.

I'm sorry to tell you you have been eliminated from the race.

Phil: this is lancaster, pennsylvania,

A picturesque farming area

That is also the center of america's amish and mennonite communities,

And in the heart of lancaster, the rohrer family farm.

This traditional mennonite homestead

Was the first pit stop in "the amazing race."

Phil: teams must now travel approximately miles

To the town of york, pennsylvania,

Did we go the wrong direction?

Well, I'm reading the map.

Ok.

Dang it...

I did not see it.we did pass it, brock.

Ok, well, that's ok.

Not seeing it and not passing it is two different things.

Let dad drive again. Get up here and turn around.

Oh, I hate when we pass things up.

We took our eye off the ball.

We said south to the driver and we passed up the exit.

We took our eye off the ball.

We said south to the driver and we passed up the exit.

Hey, bri? Sir?

Look on that map. Are we getting close to ?

There was no exit the way we went.

What did I say?you were right.

Yeah, we need to listen to brock more.

I said go east on , and apparently I was wrong.

Only one person can do so much.

Phil: all teams are now making their way

To the nation's capital, washington, d.c.

Once there, they must find the reflecting pool

In front of the u.s. Capitol building

And search the area for their next clue.

The pool is by the lincoln memorial.

"Who is ready for covert operation?"

Phil: a "roadblock" is a task that only one person may perform.

In this roadblock, that person has to search

The area around the tidal basin

For a spy carrying a briefcase identical to their own.

There are people carrying briefcases

But only are confirmed spies.

Team members will use the password "the sky is blue"

And anyone who is actually a spy

Will respond with the phrase--

"The sea is green."

Once team members have made contact,

They will exchange their briefcase for the spy's briefcase,

Which contains their next clue.

I can try it.

Ok, that's it, ok, go ahead.

The sky is blue.

The sky is blue.

We'll just hope for the best, you guys.

That she'll find it.

Get in the righthand lane. It goes right into the basin.

Y'all look dashing together.

You look like you got something going on.

Whoo!

Did you get it?

Yes!

[Cheering]

"Find welbourne manor."

Let's go.

Great job, dad.

There's no gas station.

Go back into the local streets and let's find a gas station.

That's what I'm looking for, mom.

There's no damn anything around here.

We are wasting so much time looking for a gas station now

When we right there.

It would have taken seconds to pull in and buy gas.

I guess they don't pump gas in frickin' virginia.

Well, next time, you should listen to me.

The sky is blue.

The sky is blue. No? Jerk.

The sky is blue.fair enough.

[Chuckles]

The sky is blue?the sea is green.

Thank you.

One to a person? Oh, you're kidding.

The sky is blue.

Damn it! You got to be kidding.

He's coming back this way.

All right, dave. Good job.

Is my brother near you at all?

He was.oh, nice, dude.

"Drive yourselves to middleburg, virginia."

Let's go, boys.

You gotta be kidding me. Let's go.

Good job, david.

Ask this dude.

Sir, we're trying to get to the reflecting pool.

Ok, thanks.thank you.

Can't miss it.

Been there, did that hours ago.

Turn right, go east, can't miss it.

Let's go ask people.

It's to a point where we have to.

What are you going to ask people, billy?

I don't care, but let's ask.

Just keep looking.ok, fine.

I don't see anything.

We were doing so well.

Oh, this is frustrating.

Look for a clue box.

This is k*lling me.

We got here like hours ago.

There's the reflecting pool.

Come on.

Let's look at the clue again.

"Around the reflecting pool at u.s. Capitol."

Let's ask the park people right here.

Is there a reflecting pool by the u.s. Capitol building?

All right, thank you.ok.

Come on, dad.

That's the louisiana team.

Did y'all go this way?

Yeah, we've been here for hours. Read your clue.

It says reflecting pool at the u.s. Capitol.

Oh, my god, what are we doing here?

Let's ask the service center.

Is there a reflecting pool at the u.s. Capitol?

U.s. Capitol, guys.

We went to the wrong one.

Our car is just right down here.

Let's go to our car.

Oh, my goodness.u.s. Capitol.

Come on, dad.holy hot.

Ok.

Reflecting pool.

There it is, right there.

"Find the limousine parked on third street

And receive a briefcase."

There it is. Whoo.

"Find the limousine parked on third street."

There's a limo.ok, good.

Billy, come on.thank you.

A briefcase clue.

"Take the briefcase to the tidal basin."

Thank you.

Ok, there's the capitol, guys.

Well, here's the box.

"Find the limousine parked on third street."

"Take the briefcase to the tidal basin."

Now we're go. It would have taken seconds to pull in and buy gas.

We were right next to it. Right there.

I've heard you times already.

No.

Here's a gas station. Yay!

Does he understand that we need gas in the car?

Does anything compute in his brain?

I've got to go this way, right?

Yeah, you gotta turn there.

Can I make a right here? You sure?

Yes. Relax.

The sky is blue.

Ugh, where is he?

There's another car.

There's the box right there.

"Roadblock."

That's yours.the sky is blue.

It's beautiful, isn't it?

I know, isn't it? Oh, damn.

The sky is blue.the sea is green.

Oh-ho-ho! Thank you.

Where are you, nicholas?

He's coming. I see him over there.

The sky is blue.

The sea is green.

Thank you.

Guys! I got it!

Oh, god, where's nick?nick's right behind her.

Come on, nick, let's go!

She's got it!nice job, girl.

Go, nick!

"Drive yourself to middleburg, virginia

And find welbourne manor."Ok.

"Drive yourself to middleburg, virginia."

Ok, nice job.

Let's go.

Middleburg.

West. Ok, here's .

Hopefully we can gain some time.

Middleburg, virginia.

We want to get to route .

"Who's ready for a covert operation?"

I'll do it.are you sure?

It's a physical task.i'll do whatever.

You have to go all around this thing.

We should have done it.

Come on, dad, you can do it!

I think we're really lost.

We have to get directions to the tidal basin.

Sir, where's the tidal basin?

Great directions, guys.

Leave it to us, we'll miss it.

Middleburg. What highway?

What's this here? We passed the pentagon again.

I don't know why we're going back into washington.

Apparently I have people behind me and not one of them

Can read a map.

Don't blame the people in the back.

Blame the of you,

'Cause none of you ever, ever, ever listen to me.

Give me the damn map!

I've had it. Oh, we screwed up big time.

Unbelievable. We were going so good.

God almighty.

Keep going, keep going.

Middleburg is maybe more miles.

Middleburg.

We're getting close. This is good.

Man!

Traffic jam equalizer.

Traffic.

Oh, man.traffic.

It's a big line of traffic.you got to sit.

You got to sit.oh, my god.

Look at that traffic.

This is going to take us forever.

Unless you see another way, nick.

Passes it right here.

Take it.yeah, just get off.

Having this map is huge, you know. We can take all these back roads.

And the other teams are probably running into the same traffic we did,

So whether or not they got off, I'm hoping they did not.

The sky is blue.the sea is green.

Thank you.come on, wally!

Thank you, dad!

"Find welbourne manor." All right, let's go.

Oh, my god.

On this road, everyone's going slow.

Damn it.

Oh, my goodness.

[Sighs]

Let's get off, try an alternate way.

There's the box."Roadblock."

Oh, god.

Sir, the sky is blue.

Sorry, can't help you. Dang it!

The sky is blue.

Yes! Thank god.

Come on, bren.

Here. Ok.

"Drive yourselves to middleburg, virginia."

Let's go. West.

Middleburg, here we are.

All right!

What's the name of the place?

Welbourne manor.

We're gonna see a sign.i hope we see a sign.

Middleburg. Find the welbourne manor.

Peel your little eyes.

Welbourne. There it is.

"Detour."

Phil: a "detour" is a choice between tasks,

Each with its own pros and cons.

In this detour, teams have to choose

Between m*llitary duties common during the civil w*r.

The choice-- heat of the battle...

Or heat of the night.

In heat of the battle, teams must take part

In this full-scale civil w*r reenactment

And use these stretchers to transport

Wounded soldiers off the b*ttlefield

Into the surgical tent. In heat of the night,

Teams must roll a barrel of oil to a work station,

Where they'll have to fill up oil lamps.

Then they must take the lamps to a table

And light all for the quartermaster.

Once they've completed their task,

They'll be handed a regimental flag

That they have to carry down this winding road.

And they'll find me here in this meadow,

The "pit stop" for this leg of the race.

The last team to check in here may be eliminated.

Let's just go look at it.

"Check in at the pit stop."

You guys, we've got to go.

Guys, where are we going?

Guys, I don't think it's down here.

Welbourne, to your left.

[Cheering]

Ok.

"Detour."Let's carry.

Come on, it's quicker. Come on, come on.

Wounded soldiers,

Come on, this will be fun!

Fire!

Oh, my god!

Oh, my god, you guys.it's unbelievable.

I don't know where we're supposed to go.

You guys, this is frustrating.

Up there, up there. There's people over there.

Oh, my gosh.come on!

Right here. This guy.

Put that down, let's roll him on.

I don't think we can carry wounded soldiers.

Let's do the lamps.

There's the oil, there's the oil!

"Choose lamps."

This part needs to be open.

Oh, my gosh, this will take forever.

Oh, my god. It's only five.

Welbourne manor.

We got the master map.

Is that the pink ladies? Let's go.

"Warning, the last team to check in may be eliminated."

Grab a leg, grab a leg.

We've come to help you in your battle.

How do you light them? How do you do that?

We've got teams following us.

The brother-in-laws.

The powder blue girls with their father.

Here it is. You ready to run?

"Detour."

All: oil.

They might be big people,

But... Light things?

Only versus .

It's gotta be some work.

Let's go.

Oh, this sucks.let's go!

That's three, guys.

Ladies, two more.

Rub them back and forth.

Five, six, seven.

Burning, ow. Great.

See what they're doing?

There's the oil lamps.

All right, let's go.

Ok, where do we go?follow him.

All right, let's go.

Gives me goosebumps.

Being a marine and being out here in the middle

Of a civil w*r battle, carrying wounded,

I can't even put it into words.

Megan, just stay with us. Come on.

Oh, my gosh, you guys!

One more, guys.

All right, tell me about your mom and dad here.

She's a fighter. She complains like everything,

But she comes through in the clutch.

Welcome to middleburg, virginia.

Thank you.thank you.

Phil: rogers family,

You're the last team to arrive.

I'm sorry to tell you, you have been eliminated from the race.

Tell me what's going through your mind right now.

I made a mistake and I led my guys in the wrong direction.

It's my responsibility to take the blame,

If there's blame to be cast.

I feel like if my family listened

To some of the things that I had to say,

Then we wouldn't have been eliminated.

The one thing that I always try to show brock

Is you can't get to where you need to go in this life

Casting stones and blaming other people

For your misfortunes.

My family, they'll always be the same,

They know what's right in their minds.

It's frustrating and I hate it. I can't stand it.

After this race, I'm the glue that'll hold us together.

It's extremely hard, but at the end of the day,

We're still the rogers family.

Phil: stay tuned for scenes from our next episode.

Phil: on the next episode of "the amazing race"...

Teams take a wild ride at nasa's centrifuge.

I want to be an astronaut.

♪ My arm is very heavy

Aah!

And the aiellos spin their wheels.
