Describe its texture.

And kind of rough.
It'’s also sort of rubbery.
Hmm. Those are great
Observations. The rough, bumpy
Bottom of sid'’s shoe is made out
Of a material called rubber. And
When the rubber on the shoe rubs
Against the carpet, it creates
Friction, which stops the shoe
From sliding.
So...friction can stop you
From sliding?
It sure can. Like when
Gerald tried to slide on the
Carpet.

It'’s time for the friction
Investigation. You'’re going to
Slide a hockey puck over a piece
Of carpet, then over a rubber
Mat, then over a smooth floor.
Ok, try sliding the puck as hard
As you can over the carpet, then
The rubber mat, then the floor.
We'’ll use tape to mark where
Your puck stopped. And now
Someone else can take a turn.
It looks like the puck doesn'’t
Slide very far over the carpet
Or the rubber mat, but it does
Slide far over the floor.
Let'’s try this again. First,
Slide the puck over the carpet,
Then the mat, and now the floor.
Wow! Just like the first two
Times, the puck slides really
Far on the smooth floor. Ok,
Last person. Slide the puck as
Hard as you can over the carpet,
Now the rubber mat, and now the
Smooth floor. Let'’s discover why
The puck slides the farthest
Over the floor. The floor is
Really smooth so it doesn'’t
Create much friction with the
Puck. Now feel the rubber mat.
It'’s rough, and so is the
Carpet. They create lots of
Friction with the puck so it
Doesn'’t slide very far. But the
Puck does slide far over the
Smooth floor. Draw some
Observations in your journals.
Remember how the carpet and the
Rubber mat created lots of
Friction with the hockey puck,
And the smooth floor created the
Least amount of friction.
All right, scientists, I can'’t

Only slid a teeny-tiny bit. And

So you don'’t slide. But what if

Around the world? Just push
Another button and the bottom of
The shoe changes to a smooth
Layer of mushy bananas so you
Don'’t have much friction with
The ground at all. Whee! I'’m
Sliding all around the world!
