What do we got?

A fire at Global West Ventures Corp,

a Naval defense contractor.

It appears to be arson,
and the FBI believes that

they know who set the fire.

Y'all recognize this?

That looks eerily familiar.

It's the signature
of a rather infamous arsonist,

Randall Perez, also known as...

"On Alert."

He considered himself
putting his targets

"on alert" for the crimes
they committed.

Did you work that case?

No, but I remember him well.

He had the FBI "on alert" for years.

Is this the same guy
who blew up an oil tanker?

Yeah. Talk about Carmageddon.

He shut down the freeway for a week.

Any casualties in this recent fire?

The building is under renovation,

and the foreman, Michael Duncan,

was found dead inside.

LAPD believes that he actually
caught the arsonist in the act

and was then assaulted

and left for dead at the scene.

You know, it's one thing
to burn down a building,

it is another to take a life.

If I remember, Perez's MO
focused on companies

that committed environmental crimes.

Why would he att*ck
the defense contractor?

It's unclear.

The company has multiple
highly classified Naval projects

in development on all four
of its campuses.

If there's a vendetta
against this company,

we need to find out
what it is. We need to stop

this arsonist before
he att*cks another location

Perez took a non-violent,
creative approach to his activism.

He's a trained visual artist

and built sculptures
out of plastic straws

found in the ocean.

So, why would an artist turn into

an environmental t*rror1st?

Eventually, he began participating

in more radical protests

and was arrested numerous times

- for disorderly conduct.
- When did the fires start?

.

It took us a year
to ID Perez as a suspect.

Um, but as we closed in on him,

he went on a spree, setting
nine fires in two months.

So, we can expect another fire?

Very likely.

After his last fire,

we almost caught him.

We believe he escaped to Mexico

and has been a fugitive
for the last three years.

Proverbially and literally.

I had my agents look into

no environmental red flags, only
a couple of OSHA complaints.

Hmm. All right, well,
if Perez is back in town,

Yeah. He has a daughter as well.

She lives with her aunt, but...

All right, well, let's talk to them.

Yeah, yes, of course. I love you, too.

All right, bye, baby.

So, what did she say?

- I didn't bring it up.
- Why?

I mean, Kensi is chaperoning
-year-olds

on a field trip to our nation's capital.

Seems like a little bit
of a selfish time to ask her

if I could go on a surf trip
to Costa Rica.

You do know you have to
attend the conference, right?

Listen, if I'm in Nosara,

I'm definitely gonna
find time to go surfing.

- You sure?
- Yes.

Yes, I'm sure.

Just out of curiosity, though,

what would you do with your dad
and everything being here?

I wouldn't go, but, frankly,
I couldn't go if I wanted to.

That's the thing
about being a caregiver,

you have to put other
peoples' needs first.

Mm-hmm.

- Right.
- Thank you.

- Right. Damn it.
- Right.

(WHISTLES) He really did some damage.

Not as much as he could have.

All of Perez's fires were set
between : and : a.m.

If he'd stuck to his usual MO,

Mr. Duncan would be alive right now.

He could've b*rned down
this whole complex.

Well, maybe Perez was trying
to send a more subtle message.

Maybe it wasn't Perez.

Global West is extremely lucky

that the fire was contained
to just this room.

(SCOFFS) Not to mention

how fast the fire department got here.

So, you're thinking it wasn't luck?

I'm thinking we need to dig deeper

into Global West's financials.

Wouldn't be the first time
a company set a fire

just to collect the insurance money.

Using Perez's signature

to distract from the real crime.

Maybe.

ROUNTREE: Crystal, thanks
for coming down and talking to us.

I'm sure this renewed
interest in your father

is taking a toll on you.

A toll?

Do you have any idea what
Crystal has been through?

She's had to change schools four times.

As soon as someone
found out her father was

"On Alert," she would be bullied.

And finally she's graduated,

has a job she loves,
and is off to college,

and now this.

Ms. Perez, your brother
has caused a lot of harm,

and we want to stop him before
he causes any more damage.

Or takes any more lives.

We just have a few simple questions.

Are you okay?

Sounds like you have a great job.

Where do you work?

The Annenberg. I'm a docent.

I want to be a curator after college.

MOREHURST: That's really cool.

Has your father ever reached out to you?

DENISE: No.

We haven't seen or heard
from him since he disappeared.

Is that true, Crystal?

Her father is the last thing
we need in our lives.

We don't talk to him.

We don't talk about him.
He's dead to us.

Actually...

that's not exactly true.

Why didn't you tell me?

He is dangerous.

You wouldn't understand.

Help us understand.

Yeah, what do you
and your father talk about?

Well, he apologizes, mostly.

My mom d*ed right after I was born,

and he feels bad that he's not around.

And he's sorry that he did what he did,

with the fires and everything,

but he felt like...

the world was crumbling around us,

and he had to do something
to make everyone wake up.

Hmm.

Did he ever give you any indication

he was trying to get back in the game?

No. He even talked about

turning himself in and serving his time.

Did he tell you where he lives?

No.

When's the last time
you spoke to your father?

Can you, um...

write down your cell phone number?

I don't want to get him in trouble.

Crystal, he's already in trouble,
we just want to help him.

FATIMA: Deeks.

What do you got, Fatima?

So, I reviewed Global West's financials,

and they're clean.

As a matter of fact,
they are flush with cash.

They sold off a portion
of the company last year

for a huge profit.

Uh, insurance money

would be a drop in the bucket
at this point.

All right, copy that. Thank you.

So, Fatima couldn't
find any financial motive

for Global West to light
their own building on fire.

What about you, you find
anything in that, uh,

fire inspector report?

It's only preliminary.

Apparently, the arsonist
used thermite as an accelerant.

It's easy to make and transport.

So, just like Perez.

Don't forget, Perez uses his own recipe.

We'll have to wait
for the final arson report

to see if they match.

Fortunately,
none of the unique ingredients

have been released to the public.

Oh, that's interesting.

So, if this was the handiwork
of a copycat,

they wouldn't know the exact recipe.

- Exactly.
- Huh.

If Perez or the copycat

continue to follow
Perez's arson pattern,

they're gonna need more ingredients.

I mean, it would take a ton of thermite

just to cover this room.

Only a few retailers where you can buy

iron oxide and aluminum powder in bulk.

If we can find out
where a large purchase was made,

may lead us to the arsonist.

I'm gonna call Fatima.

PEMBROOK: Remember?

Feelings cause pain.

DEEKS: So,
we've already found three footprints

heading down the hallway.

Well, I appreciate your enthusiasm,

but it's highly unlikely

that an accelerant stuck
to his shoe long enough

for us to track it outside.

I'll have you know that I'm a fan

of Forensic Phil's
Freaky Friday channel.

Don't tell me you learned how to
be a detective on the Internet.

If the grooves on the base of his sole

are deep enough, there's
a chance the thermite residue

may last a little bit longer.

Well, hopefully,
there's a camera out here.

- Check this out.
- DEEKS: What you got?

SAM: Acceleration marks.

Maybe the arsonist parked back here.

Or somebody picked him up.

Oh.

Check this. I got a footprint.

Well, that could be anyone.

Well, there's only one way to find out.

Oh!

Wow! Ladies and gentlemen,

that is what the Internet is for.

- You, my friend, got lucky.
- Did I?

So, if the car sped east to the street,

which these
acceleration marks indicate...

Then the arsonist got in
on the passenger's side.

There was a driver.

The arsonist must've had an accomplice.

Yeah, but Perez always worked alone.

This is feeling more and more
like a copycat arsonist.

Now, we're looking for two.

(DOOR OPENS, FOOTSTEPS APPROACH)

They say that daydreaming
restores the brain,

but I've always seen it as

a pastime of the idle mind.

I'm sorry, Admiral.

I-I wasn't daydreaming,

I was listening to Rountree
and Agent Morehurst.

Apparently, they dated a while ago,

and I think Rountree ghosted her.

Oh, ghosting is when...

I know what ghosting is, Agent Namazi.

And, fascinating as the love lives

of my agents are,

I'd like a sitrep.

Sure.

So, Sam and Deeks were right
about a car leaving the alley

at the time of the fire.

A traffic cam caught the getaway car

with two people inside.

Well, that confirms that the
arsonist has an accomplice.

Could you ID them?

I was able to get an image
of the passenger,

but it's too grainy for facial rec.

That could be Perez

or Elton John.

Unfortunately, the plates don't match.

- It's most likely stolen.
- Yeah.

In fact, they belong to a dead guy.

Well, this is just

in Crystal's phone records

left the boatshed,

she also called the same number.

So, Denise lied to us.

She has been in contact with Perez.

Where is she now?

Rountree and Morehurst are tailing her.

to look like the arson

is the work of a copycat,

Denise could still lead us to Perez.

That's the only reason I forgave him.

We know that there were two people

Hold on to that. Where's Callen?

Ah, Kilbride said he's busy,
so he sent me.

I don't remember anything about Perez

setting booby traps.

There's a lot about this case

that he's back in town.

So, this is all I could
find of the combined accelerant.

You're up.

SAM: All right, now,
if this sample matches Perez's recipe,

at least we can confirm
that he's one of our arsonists.

So, uh... what's your take on Morehurst?

No, I don't know what you mean.

Uh-uh.

Does Rountree know you're listening in?

It's not my fault
they don't turn off their comms.

(BEEPS)

Okay, we've got iron oxide,

aluminum...
which makes classic thermite...

and... sulfur.

That's Perez's secret ingredient.

It's an exact match for Perez's recipe.

House is clear. LAPD's on the way.

Navarro's out there,
preparing to set another fire.

Where is he?

I have no idea.

Look, I'm looking for him, too.

That is the God's honest truth.

So, if you're not involved,

how'd you know Navarro started the fire?

Before I went underground,

I asked him to keep some of my stuff.

I had a pipette filled with the
accelerant mixture that I use.

Navarro is smart.

Must've broke it down
with a mass spectrometer.

When I heard about the fire

I knew it had to be Navarro.

SAM: Assume we believe you.

Navarro started this latest fire.

We know he had an accomplice.

If not you, then who?

I don't know.

When I met Navarro, he was young, mad,

and impressionable.

He wanted to change the world.

He used to hang out
at the house all the time.

He became like family.

When he found out who I was,

I broadened my search
to find a connection

between the companies
on the list from the garage,

and I found one.

All the companies donated large sums

to Senator Greg Garrett's
reelection campaign.

Okay, so why att*ck the companies?

Garrett recently k*lled a major
climate bill in the Senate.

They want to punish the
companies for supporting him

and keeping him in office.

So, what's the next target?

The senator's in town.

He's touring an abandoned factory

that's part of an urban
renewal project in Newhall,

but it's not on the list.

That's near Sylmar, where
Crystal met up with Navarro.

If Crystal and Navarro
are headed to that factory...

Then they're not trying
to att*ck any of the companies,

- they're after the senator.

Fatima, can you alert Deeks and Sam

and the senator's team?
We're on our way.

Looks like the senator's

Fatima, were you able to speak

Yes. We're evacuating everyone.
