Temporary foster parent, but I wanna be long-term.

Clint: This is the only day we have to accomplish what we discussed.

Hey you.

(Foal whinnies)

Poor thing.

Clint: Jack, I can't work miracles.

So it doesn't look good.

Clint: No, Jack, it doesn't.

(Phoenix gallops away)

Amy: Ty, look! Make a wish!

Will you marry me?

Yes, of course I will!

(Excited, happy laughter)

Jack, there's a fire! Can you come, please!

Call the fire department, send them to your place.

What?!

Ty: That a boy!

Amy: Hey!

You let me sleep in.

Ty: I did.

When I woke up, you were dead to the world.

So did that really happen last night?

Did you ask me to marry you?

I did.

Hmm.

Are you happy?

I'm very happy!

Yeah?

Yeah.

Me too.

(Giggles happily)

Hey, you! How's he doing?

Let's find out!

Hold that.

Okay... all right.

It's looking good. See?

Infection's gone. (Laughs)

You're feeling better, too, aren't ya?

So you think he can go back to his mom?

I think so.

But we should probably get stumpy's tents up first before we leave.

Yeah, I guess that's sorta why we came in the first place.

Yeah.

All right.

Amy: Okay, little man...

Peter: All right, well, okay. Just... well, when and how did it start?

Do you have any idea?

Will you know later this afternoon?

Tomorrow? Just... fine, yeah.

Just keep in touch, okay?

Lou: I don't understand, grandpa.

How could this happen?

I don't have an answer for you, Lou...

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

I can't even think about it.

Jack: You don't have to think about it

No, honey.

Must be out of cell range.

Ty and I have some exciting news!

What's wrong?

There was a fire.

Lou: The Hanley place... our place, it b*rned down, and um...

Georgie almost didn't make it out of the barn.

Jack rescued me.

Oh my God... (Drops bag)

Lou...

I'm so sorry.

(Sighs)

Lou: Just yesterday, the contractor told Peter there's an issue with the wiring, and he...

(Sighs) we were supposed to meet with him, then Katie got sick so we couldn't, and we put it off.

What if we hadn't put it off?

We should never have put it off.

Lou, hey...

I just loved that place, Amy.

It was gonna be our home... and now it's gone.

Hey... come here.

It's okay.

(Weeping quietly)

Peter: Georgie? You in here?

Hey... there she is.

I've been looking all over for you.

I'm really sorry that I couldn't catch Phoenix.

I am...

It's not your fault.

I was the one who put him in that stall, and he could've d*ed.

Well, he didn't.

And you know what? It's nobody's fault.

I probably won't even see him again.

I don't know.

You know, from what I've heard, that horse has bolted before, but he always comes back to the people that love him.

Right. Like that happens.

Hey, hey...

Georgie, listen.

You can't keep running away whenever you want.

I didn't run away because I wanted to.

Why, then?

Everything's a mess and it's all my fault.

Hey, hey, come here.

No, it's not, so don't you say that.

And you can tell me, you can.

You can tell me anything you want.

I won't get mad. I promise.

Georgie...

Lou: There's something else you should know.

Um, Georgie was with Phoenix when she ran away, and he's okay, but he was trapped in a stall full of smoke and Peter said when they got there, he was just completely panicked, crazed.

And as soon as they got him outta the barn, he bolted.

But we haven't seen him since.

It's okay. We'll find him.

(Door bangs shut) I'm sorry.

It's okay.

(Half-sobbed) Dad...

Was it about missing the camping trip?

That we had to meet with Clint instead?

Were you that angry with me?

No.

Georgie, look at me.

I want an answer.

I'm a runaway; It's what I do.

Well, it's the truth.

Amy: If that's okay.

No, I think you're right.

Ty, um... I'm really glad you asked me.

The time was right.

It was. It was magical.

I'm never gonna forget it.

Did it take your breath away?

(Laughs) Yeah. I'm still not breathing.

(Laughs)

You know, it kinda feels wrong to be so happy right now.

(Shrill whinny in the distance)

Did you hear that?

(Screen door creaks shut)

I thought I heard Phoenix, but I guess not.

(Shrill whinny)

(Gasps) Phoenix!

Amy: (Sleepily) What?

Georgie: Phoenix!

Amy: Remi, stay.

Phoenix?!

(Phoenix grunts nervously and whinnies)

Georgie: No, no, no! No, no, no! Don't go! Don't go!

Oh, please!

He's afraid of me. He hates me!

Amy: He just got spooked. That's it, okay?

Horses can take just as long as humans to get over a shock.

I'm gonna get him back, all right?

(Spartan grunts)

(Vehicle rumbles nearby)

Clint: Boy, I'm glad you turned up. Thanks, Jack.

I mean, I know you people have enough on your minds without running around, looking for my belongings.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your property, by the way.

Thanks, Clint.

(Uncomfortable) So...

I guess we should get down to the issue at hand.

Your face is like a book, Clint, so just spill it... what you came to tell me.

It's not good news.

Child services turned down your application.

(Lou gasps)

I figured.

Lou: Are you kidding me? This is ridicul... grandpa is the best possible person to look after Georgie!

I mean, he just saved her from a burning barn!

So you save her from barns and wells?

Yeah.

So why? What are the details?

Well, Jack, in the conversations I had with Georgie, and the conversations I had with Peter and Lou, and even with you, I, I just...

I began to have some reasonable doubts about your ability to cope.

Then there was some issue about the lack of backup, not to mention the unreported runaways... even some safety issues.

The interview I had with your son-in-law, Tim, he said... ah, Tim!

You know, I should've known!

It was because he got himself involved.

I never asked him to.

Well, Tim wasn't the ultimate deciding factor.

Then what was?

Your age, Jack.

(Stunned) My age?

I thought anyone from eighteen to eighty could apply for foster parent status.

Clint: Yes, if it's in the best interests of the child.

But in this case, my colleagues believe that your age is not in the best interests of the child.

Lou: This is so not fair.

You know, Clint was here on the worst possible day!

I was crazed. Katie had a temperature.

She was throwing up everywhere!

I know. I'm sure that wasn't the deciding factor.

Lou: I know, but... whatever.

I made it seem like I couldn't be counted on; like grandpa didn't have backup, and it makes me crazy!

You should've seen the look on grandpa's face.

I mean, I've never seen him so devastated.

This is a nightmare and I wanna wake up.

Listen, just stop, okay?

Let's not stress out about everything all at once.

What exactly did Clint say is gonna happen to Georgie?

They're gonna start looking for a new placement for her, you know, and... and Georgie's gonna be devastated too.

She loves it here, and she loves grandpa.

It's not fair.

(Cell phone rings) I... it's the fire Marshall.

(Phone beeps) Hello, Peter Morris speaking.

(Vehicle door bangs shut)

Jack: You! Just the guy I wanna talk to!

What'd you say to Clint?

About what?

You know damn well about what!

My relationship with Georgie.

What did I say? I said great things.

I told him about the steers and how you taught her to herd them.

Well, now his bosses think I couldn't care less about child safety.

Did you tell Clint I was teaching her to drive the tractor?!

Yeah! Yeah! That's a great accomplishment.

Jack: She's eleven, Tim!

She's not supposed to be driving a tractor!

But she did it!

Jack: Well, you don't have to tell that to Clint!

Gah! You don't get it do ya?

What is... what is this about?

I got turned down. That's what it's about.

And you think it's because of me?

It's my fault? Is that what you're saying?

'Cause if you think it's because of me, I can fix it.

Just stay out of it.

No! I'm not gonna stay out of it.

I'll talk to Clint, I'll make it right.

Jack: Don't!

Besides, there's another reason.

What?

My age.

(Sighs)

(Snorts softly)

(Tack jingles)

Let's go home.

(Congested breath)

Are you okay? Hmm?

(Congested breaths)

(Dialling beeps)

Hey, Ty, um, can you come meet me?

There's something wrong with Phoenix.

Jack: Amy's not back?

Georgie: Not yet.

Well, she'll find him.

And even if she doesn't, if he showed up once, he'll show up again.

Georgie: What did Clint want?

Jack: Okay. Well...

I didn't wanna tell you ahead of time, but I applied to be your long-term foster parent.

I knew that.

You knew? How did you know?

Did he say yes?

Well, it wasn't up to Clint. Well, not entirely.

So, unfortunately, no.

I was turned down.

It's because of me.

Well, why do you say that?

I told him about the well, Jack, and...

I made you look... kinda bad.

And it came out all wrong and I'm just really sorry.

(Crying) I wrecked everything.

Jack: You didn't wrecknynything.

It was me.

It was my... my age. They think I'm too old.

What all this means is... is um... well, we both know the rules, and Clint's gonna be looking for another situation for you.

I told you yesterday that...

I ran away because I wanted to, and that was a lie.

I don't wanna go anywhere else.

I really don't, Jack.

(Sniffling)

Okay.

(Truck rumbles loudly)

Clint: Look, I'm gonna have to call you back, okay?

All right. Talk soon.

(Door bang shuts)

Tim?

If I said something that may have put Jack in a bad light, it was unintentional.

You've gotta reconsider.

Tim, it wasn't just what you said.

It's his age, and it's not entirely up to me.

Oh, c'mon.

You know Jack's the best person for Georgie to be with, and the whole family is weighing in to help out, so his age shouldn't matter.

Look, Tim, I'm on your side.

Well, then act like it.

But it's been processed.

Processed...

Yes, processed.

It's very difficult to get things turned around once they've been processed.

You know, once they're in the system.

The system...

That's right, the system.

Clint...

You are the system... you!

Look at your track record. You wield power.

You have clout!

Well, I wouldn't go that far.

I would go that far! I would.

Give yourself some credit!

A man in your position, snap your fingers, you could have Jack's file back on your desk in no time.

You know, I suppose I could put in a request for your appeal.

There you go.

But then, you know, since you're instigating the process, there'd be a lot of paperwork for you to sign.

Fine. Paperwork. Throw it at me.

Okay. (Phone chirps) sh**t!

I got another call.

Of course you do, you're busy.

I'll be in touch. (Phone beeps)
Lisa: Hello?!

(Door closes)

I. Well, hello.

I heard about the fire... and Georgie.

I'm so sorry.

How's everybody doing?

Oh, we're all in kind of a state of shock, I guess.

Lisa: I bet.

Any idea what caused it?

No.

No, Peter's looking on that, and Lou, not so much.

Jack...

I'm glad you're here though.

Lisa: Let me get something straight with you.

That whole Dan thing... was a misunderstanding.

There's no reconciliation.

There was never a reconciliation.

Jack: What about our reconciliation?

Is there any chance of that?

I don't know.

Well, I'd kinda like to figure things out so then... then we would know.

I guess we would.

I do know that I'm here to stay and help, and do whatever I can.

Well, that's a start.

Do hear anything?

Yeah. You were right.

Smoke inhalation problems.

It could be worse.

He's not coughing, so that's a good sign.

Okay. So what do we do?

Ty: Well, we gotta make sure he has plenty of water to keep his airways moist.

That'll help clear his lungs of any inhaled particulate from the smoke.

Inhaled particulate.

Wow! You're sounding quite knowledgeable, Dr. Borden.

It's kinda sexy.

Well, there's nothing sexier than inhaled particulate.

(Laughing)

We gotta water down his hay.

That'll help reduce any particles in the dust, like mold, bacteria, pollen... anything.

I kinda wanna kiss you right now.

Yeah?

(Gasps) You found him!

Ty: Hey, Georgie, did you wanna wet down his hay and help us feed him?

Why do we have to do that?

Amy: It'll just make his lungs feel better.

He inhaled some smoke, as well, so... he's gonna be fine, but this'll help him out.

Amy: Why don't you come and feed him?

It might break the ice between you guys and help you bond again.

Hey, Phoenix. Hi.

(Phoenix snorts nervously, kicks the stall hard)

He... he still hates me.

Amy: He doesn't hate you, Georgie, but it is gonna take some time.

Well, I don't have time.

Of course you do.

No, I don't!

I'm not gonna be around here anymore.

What're you talking about?

Jack got turned down, so... I can't stay.

They're making me leave.

Lou: Lisa, you really don't have to do all this.

Lisa: Yes, I do. I am gonna cook and clean, take care of my gorgeous God daughter, so that you two have more time to deal with what's on your plate.

Well, Peter's with those insurance guys now, dealing with that, so...

Good.

Lou: Hey, Georgie, are you hungry?

Jack: I'll go check on her.

Something happen?

(Sighs heavily)

It's not fair.

No. No it isn't.

I don't wanna go.

I don't want you to either.

(Sniffling)

(Sniffling)

Peter: Okay. I got some bad news and some good news.

The bad news is... yes, it was faulty wiring that caused the fire.

The good news is... insurance is gonna cover the cost of the house and the repairs to the barn.

Good. That's good.

Just good? No, honey, we can actually recoup the entire cost of the house.

We can rebuild, or sell the property and maybe get something we can actually move into, you know?

Okay, look, I'm...

I'm sorry. I know that you're sad.

I know that you're beyond sad.

But a house is just a thing, honey.

You know, it can be replaced.

We should be counting our blessings no one was hurt.

How can you just be so matter of fact about this?

I'm not.

That was the house I had always dreamed of for us.

I loved that place and it can't just be replaced.

I know.

No, I mean, for you it was just an albatross around your neck, and now you're rid of it.

No wonder you're optimistic.

What does that even mean?

You think I'm happy that the house b*rned down?

Really? Honestly? Is that what you're saying?

No! I know that you're not glad that the house b*rned down, but obviously it meant more to me than it did to you, and it's like, it's like you're relieved that our dreams went up in smoke.

That is not true.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that.

Peter: Lou!

(Screen door snaps shut)

Amy: What're you doing?

What does it look like I'm doing?

I'm packing.

Why?

'Cause Clint will send me to a new home, and it'll probably be sooner than later.

I've been through this before.

Georgie, before you go... whenever that is... you need to make things right with Phoenix.

How? He won't even come near me.

We'll take it slow.

But he needs you just as much as you need him.

Now, regardless of where you end up, you can always come back here because Phoenix will always be your horse, no matter what.

Okay?

(Spartan grunts)

Hey, Phoenix...

(Phoenix whinnies and kicks the stall)

Jack: See? I missed that... you bringing stuff you figured we needed even if we didn't.

So Lou told me about the Georgie decision.

Yeah.

Why didn't you tell me about that?

Well, I guess I know how you always felt about the situation, so...

Well, I'd be lying if I said I was all for it from the start.

I had doubts about the whole arrangement.

But um... I think it's a shame.

You would've done an amazing job.

You're doing an amazing job.

Georgie: How is she feeling?

She is right back to normal.

Georgie: Hey, Katie, who's this guy? Who's this guy?

Is he a fat cat? Can you say "fat cat"?

Lou: Hey, you know how you told me that you've always wanted a little sister?

Well, you got it.

You are a great big sister to Katie.

Can I visit?

I'll be mad if you don't.

I have a brother.

Really?

Georgie: Yeah. He's older than me. He's eighteen.

What is your brother's name?

Jeff.

Well, where is he?

Georgie: He's in Fort McMurray.

Um, I phoned him last night and told him what happened with Clint and Jack.

And what did he say?

Nothing.

Lou: Are you gonna see your brother?

Georgie: Um... I don't think so.

He doesn't want me.

Lou: I'm sorry for those things I said.

Don't worry about it, honey.

Lou: No.

You know, you poured your heart and soul into that house, and I know you did it for me.

And you're right, it's just a house.

I have to let it go.

It's not like we lost a loved one.

(Chuckles)

But we're about to.

What're you talking about?

(Whispers) Georgie.

What is gonna happen to that girl, honey?

I cannot stand the idea of her with some other family.

I know, honey, I...

Lou: She has a brother. He's eighteen.

He hasn't made any move to take care of her.

But how could he?

I mean, he's just a kid himself, you know?

It's so hard to grasp what those two have been through.

We are so lucky we have a beautiful baby girl.

We are.

I know.

We could have another baby, you know.

I think it's time for a new member of our family, but I don't think it's a baby.

Yes, I'm... we're very serious about this, Clint.

Look, I know we came across badly in the interview... very badly, in fact... but it was just one of those days that went from bad to worse, and I don't want you to judge Peter and I by... well, thank you. I appreciate that.

Sorry?

Yes. Okay, I will hold because I really need to talk to you, Clint.

Tim: Yeah, Clint, I got the paperwork.

Yeah. So you really think it's gonna make a difference, huh?

Well, no, good, yeah.

Uh, just it's a little hard to comprehend, so I have a few questions.

What, now you have somebody on the line?

Yeah, well, no. Call me back.

Call me back. Sure.

Ty: Hey, Tim, what's up?

Nothing good.

Ty: Oh.

Tim: Nothing good at all.

I'm trying to get Clint to reconsider this whole Jack thing, and what does he do? He sends me a wad of paperwork.

Now, I know I'm gonna screw this up.

You know what I hate? I hate feeling useless.

This family's falling apart.

I've seen it happen before... I know the signs...

I see them happening again.

And Lou and Peter, they're going through a very rough time.

I'll be very surprised if they even get through it.

So nothing good is happening right now.

Tim, something good is happening.

Really good, actually.

What?

I don't know if I should be telling you this right now...

Oh, spit it out. What?

I asked Amy to marry me.

She said yes.

She said yes, and that's good news?

Yeah. That's great news!

Let me guess. I'm the last to know.

No, Tim, you're the first to know.

I'm the first to know.

'Cause that... that is good news!

It is good news! Congratulations on that!

Thank you. That's great!

That's great news!

But could you keep it under your hat?

Amy and I felt that with everything that's going on, it'd be best to wait to tell the others.

Okay. Thank you.

That's good.

You're a wise man. Who knew?

(Truck rumbles to a stop)

You're going so soon?

I have to get home and pack.

France? Already?

Yeah. I take possession of the new house.

I know you didn't have a great time there...

I'm sorry about that... but it sure would be nice to see your face at my door, anytime, if you can find your way there.

I'll try. I really will.

Okay.

Goodbye.

No. Not goodbye.

Just... 'til next time.

Right. Okay. 'Til next time.

(Car door bangs shut, engine starts)

(Vehicle rumbles away)

Yeah, well, just give me another day.

I'll have all this paperwork to you.

Yeah. Well, twenty-four hours, Clint. That... why?

Well, how is that in the best interest of the kid?

Yeah.

Okay. Fine. You know...

Yeah, I'll talk to you later.

(Phone beeps off)

Jack: Why are you talking to Clint?

Lou: Grandpa?

I just saw Lisa leaving. Are you okay?

Jack: Tell me what you said to Clint!

Lou: Clint? You're talking to Clint?

Why are you talking to Clint?

They found a placement for Georgie.

No, Clint, I'm serious about this.

I just need one more day.

Please!

(Sighs) Okay. Bye.

(Phone beeps off)

I don't wanna do this.

But you need to do this.

It doesn't matter.

Yes. It does.

(Rope whips around)

I don't know what I'm doing!

Amy: It's okay. Just keep him moving.

That's good. You're doing great!

He won't do it! He won't change direction!

Yes he will.

He just needs to know you're the leader.

You have to go this way!

This way! You have to go this way!

Do what I tell you!

Oh my God, you stupid horse!

The other way! You have to go the other way!

She's pretty upset. You should give her a break.

Georgie: Do what I tell you!

I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry!

Don't run away from me!

Please! Don't run away from me!

Please! I'm sorry!

(Sobbing) I'm sorr...

(Phoenix continues galloping)

(Weeping quietly)

(Panting)

(Slows to a halt)

(Phoenix blows out his breath)

(Weeping)

(Hooves thud softly)

(Phoenix blows out his breath)

(Crying, happy)

(Door opens)

I know, I saw.

I felt like I was watching Amy.

Peter, I don't think I can bear this.

Now, only if that's okay with you.
