Well, where is he?

Georgie: He's in Fort McMurray.

Lou: Are you going to see your brother?

I don't think so. He doesn't want me.

Ty: We're not eloping.

Lou: You're not?

Amy: I was invited to lead a horse clinic in Vegas and Ty and I thought we could make a road trip out of it.

It's not me.

No, it's me.

(Cell phone rings)

Comes with the new job.

Lou: I told you that Georgie's birthday was coming up weeks ago, honey.

Well, I'm sure you can reschedule the appointment.

I just bought the McSlade farm and there's been some unexpected expenses.

What does that have to do with Phoenix?

That horse, he's just too valuable to give away.

I told you not to buy that feed!

I take full responsibility.

You went behind my back.

You've destroyed everything I care about!

(Tim grunts in pain)

(Jack yelps in pain)

Tim: That didn't need to happen, Jack.

(Cell phone rings)

(Papers rustle)

(Phone beeps on)

Hey, Rich.

No, I did not get the Red Deer venue nailed down.

Why?

Because somebody on your end gave the manager all the wrong info and he's already booked those dates we wanted.

(Sighs) Yes, I am going to try to fix it.

Adios.

(Phone beeps off)

(Phone plops down)

(Truck rumbles loudly)

Lou: There you go.

Ty: Hey, Amy. So...

I think we can make it down to Vegas in two days.

Then we can spend overnight in Idaho Falls, and then go back up through these roads...

Amy: Ty...

I can't focus on this Vegas clinic with the whole Phoenix thing going on.

Georgie: What Phoenix thing?

Amy: Um, the loading Phoenix in the trailer thing.

We gotta go soon.

And I have to ask you about your birthday.

Did you want to invite any friends from school?

Georgie: Mmm... nah.

Just you guys, but... can I have sparklers?

I've always wanted sparklers on my birthday.

Sparklers? You got it.

Amy: Go load your horse.

Okay.

(Amy sighs)

(Sighs)

Georgie: (Panting, excited)

Jack! You're back!

How was your trip?

Amy and I are going to the arena.

Can you help me load Phoenix?

Sure. I can absolutely help you do that.

Georgie: I'll get him!

Ty: I got ten days off.

We can take the back roads, see lots of countryside, spend some time together, alone.

It sounds amazing.

Amy, the Phoenix situation will work itself out.

Eric's a reasonable guy.

I hope so.

Come on, get excited!

I will! I will!

(Truck rumbles up)

Can I help you?

Jeff: Hey.

I'm looking for Georgina Crawley.

Is she here?

Jeff?

Jeff: Squirt!

Georgie: Jeffie!

Jeff: Well, I had to come to Calgary for this training course, so I thought I'd drop by and surprise my little sister 'cause it's her birthday today, right?

No!

Lou: It's the day after tomorrow. We're planning a party.

You're gonna be there, right?

Uh, yeah, yeah.

I don't have to be back at work right away.

I got a few days off.

You have to be here for my birthday.

Jack: Of course he will.

Where do you wanna sleep?

In a cabin down at Lou's dude ranch or the loft in the barn?

Oh, the barn's fine.

I'll be closer to The Squirt that way.

(Telephone rings)

(Phone beeps on)

Hello?

Yes, Mr. Williams.

Eric, hi.

I left you a couple messages.

I wasn't sure if you were out of town.

Yes, I would love to talk. We need to talk.

Look, Lou, I already told you.

Phoenix has amazing potential as a jumper.

I'm asking $40,000 for him.

$40,000 dollars?!

I've done my research and that's a fair price.

Look, in a perfect world, I would just give you the horse, but I can't and I'm sorry.

Okay, well, let's at least negotiate here.

Make me an offer.

I will, but obviously I need to discuss this with my family first.

No problem, but I'm gonna need a decision sooner rather than later.

Jack: $40,000 dollars?!

I don't know how that's gonna happen.

We're still in the hole from Spartan's surgery, and I know you don't want to hear this, but I still intend to buy out your father.

The money is way better spent on Phoenix!

You and dad need to get over yourselves.

Lou, imagine if we had to cull that entire herd!

But it didn't happen, grandpa!

Georgie is going to be devastated if she loses that horse.

I know.

On her birthday.

I'm sorry.

So am I.

Woo!

(Clapping) Yeah, Georgie!

Keep your heels down, honey.

Wow.

Amy: Nice one!

Jeff: How'd she learn to ride like that?

She's a bit of a natural, but Amy is really helping her to get to the next level.

You know, I barely recognized her at first, all dressed up like some rich kid.

So when was the last time you saw her?

Uh, I don't know.

Four years ago, maybe five.

Wow! No wonder you didn't recognize her.

I mean, kids change a lot in that time...

Okay, just so you know, it's not my fault that I couldn't keep in touch with her when I was gone, all right?

We only lived with the same family once, a long time ago, and that didn't work out for me, so they sent me to a different place.

All right, not everyone has a perfect family, not even you, I bet.

Georgie: Jeff!

Watch this!

Jeff: Yeah, Georgie!

Amy: (Clapping) Nice one!

Lou: (Clapping) Good one.

Hey! Where you been?

Jack: Where do you think I've been? I've got a job.

Well, I've been looking for you.

I wanna talk to you about our partnership.

You know what, Tim?

I told you already, we don't have a partnership.

Oh, we had it out, big deal.

It's not the first time and it won't be the last, so let's just put it behind us.

I have no intention of putting anything behind me.

You still determined to buy my share?

No, I'm not.

I want you to buy my share.

Well, how the hell am I gonna do that, Jack?

Jack: I don't care how you do it.

I just need the money more than I need the stress of owning a herd of cattle with you.

Yeah, you're stressed, you're tired.

Okay, I get it. You're not thinking straight.

When you are thinking straight, you're gonna realize...

Jack: I'm thinking straight.

You buy me out!

I told you, you and me, we're finished.

Hiyah.

Lou: (Gasps) Peter! Honey!

You made it!

Peter: Hey.

Lou: Oh, I knew you would!

Honey, it's Georgie's first birthday with us and now we're all here.

It's perfect! Thank you.

Peter: You're welcome.

Lou: You know, I think this is the first real birthday party she's ever had.

Here, let me take your coat.

Peter: Okay.

Lou: Oh, gosh, I have to catch you up, honey.

We have a bit of a problem... actually, a real problem... with Phoenix.

Oh, and guess who's shown up out of the blue?

Peter: Hey...

Lou: Georgie's brother, and I have to be honest, I am not too sure about the guy.

Anyway, I've been so busy just getting everything ready, and guess what Georgie wants for her birthday?

Sparklers.

I have no idea where to get them, especially at this time of year.

Honey, can you stop, please, for a second?

See, this is what you do.

What? What do I do?

You throw yourself into planning these crazy events and you just ignore the issues that really matter.

What're you talking about?

Do you remember our last phone call at all?

'Cause I do.

Okay, so we argued. I'm totally over it.

Yeah, but don't you realize that all our phone calls end up as arguments?

I mean, they're less conversations than they are just arguments, all right?

When I'm here, everything is fine.

But as soon as I go away and we're on the phone nothing I ever say or do is right.

Peter, it's not like that!

It's just way harder to communicate long distance.

Peter: Right. That's my point exactly, and I think I have a solution.

I got a promotion and a raise.

What?! That's fantastic!

Yes, yes it is, and I think we should buy a house in Vancouver.

In Vancouver?

Yes.

Peter...

It's a buyers market out there right now, and we both know that this long distance thing is not working, Lou...

(Katie starts to cry)

Okay, somebody just heard your voice.

Can we go and say hi?

Can we do that?

(Katie continues to cry)

Yeah.

Okay.

Georgie: Thanks.

Hi. Good boy.

Mallory: Hey, guys.

Mallory, look who's here... my brother.

Jeff, Mallory.

Hey.

Mallory: Hi! You do exist. Good to know.

Here, why don't you walk him in?

Nah, Georgie, forget it. (Chuckles nervously)

My big brother is afraid, can you believe it?

All right. Come on, beast, move!

(Phoenix whinnies shrilly)

Jeez! (Georgie laughs)

Amy: Why don't you just take him inside, Georgie?

Mallory: Hey, do you have minute? I need to talk to you.

Amy: Yeah.

Mallory: See you.

Jeff: Hey, yeah, see you.

Hey, what's her name again?

Georgie: And this is where I hid when I ran away from the cat pee people, and then when I phoned you I was downstairs in the office.

Jeff?

Yeah?

The last time I called you.. you didn't seem too happy to hear from me.

Wait, what're you talkin' about?

Well, like you didn't want me.

No, Georgie, you got it all wrong.

It wasn't that I didn't want you, all right?

I wasn't settled.

But now everything is different, all right?

I have a good job and a huge condo!

I mean, Fort Mac is... it's amazing.

I think you'd love it there.

(Knock at the door)

Um...

Ty: Sorry to interrupt.

Lou says dinner's ready, so you know.

Georgie: Oh, okay.

I gotta go get changed.

Hey, hey, who's uh... who's buying her the fancy riding stuff?

Uh, I guess, Lou, maybe Jack.

Okay, well, I'll pay 'em back.

I'm good for it.

Oil sands, man, sky's the limit.

I mean, you wouldn't believe how much money I'm making.

Like big money.

Mm-hmm.

Seriously big money.

I mean, it's ridiculous how much I've been able to save.

And now that I've done this training course I'm gonna make even more.

That's great. Congratulations.

So what do you do?

I'm in vet school right now.

I got four more years and then I can practice.

Oh, okay. So it's gonna be a few more years till you rake in the dough, huh?

But, hey, everyone's got their own different goal, right?

You got a... you got a goal, Jeff?

Yeah! Yeah, way more than one.

Um, I got somethin' I want to say.

Um, first, I want to thank you for the great dinner and for having me here, but mostly I want to thank you guys for looking after my sister the way that you did.

I um...

I can't tell you how grateful I am for that.

I guess I feel a little guilty.

I know I wasn't there for you when you needed me and...

I'm sorry.

I really am.

But I came here with a purpose, with a goal.

It's time for me to step up to the plate and take on some responsibility.

So...

I'm gonna be taking Georgie back to Fort Mac with me.

I'm gonna be her legal guardian.

We're gonna leave right after her birthday.

How's that sound?

(Door squeaks quietly)

(Door squeaks quietly)

Georgie: Lou?

Lou: You're awake.

Georgie: (Sighs) My brain won't stop.

Lou: (Sighs)

Georgie, what are you... what are you thinking about all of this?

I don't know.

I guess...

I always dreamt that some day my brother would come and get me and we'd live together.

But...

But what?

I love it here and... I'd miss everybody.

(Sighs)

And Jeff, he... he really wants me to go with him, and I don't want to disappoint him.

Lou: Georgie... this is your decision to make.

(Tearful) It's not that far away is it... Fort Mac?

I could always come visit and... ride Phoenix, right?

(Sighs heavily)

(Wind whistles)

Rich, it's Jack.

Come on.

I finally get this guy in Red Deer on board with the dates that we wanted and now you want to change 'em again.

How does that make me look?

(Sighs in frustration)

Call me back when you get this.

(Sighs, phone beeps off)

Lou: Honey, we went through the proper channels.

We are Georgie's foster parents.

Peter: I know, I know, Lou, I...

Lou: We met with Clint.

Peter: Yeah, according to him, it's well within Jeff's rights to seek guardianship of Georgie.

Can you believe that? The system is insane.

Lou: They say they're gonna verify everything about his job and his living situation, but Jeff is Georgie's only living relative.

He's over eighteen, he has a job, he has a place for her to live... apparently, there's nothing we can do.

Did you hear what I said?

Yeah, I did.

Lou: There's something I want to do for Georgie.

I want to buy Phoenix for her, even if she's going back to Fort Mac.

She's not, honey. She won't be going back.

We'll fight it. It'll never be approved.

Okay, we'll fight it.

So how much is this horse?

$40,000 dollars.

I can probably negotiate that down, and, I mean, we have the insurance money from the house.

We don't.

We don't have the insurance money, honey.

It's tied up.

Trust me, there's no extra $40,000 lying around.

But we have enough money to buy a house in Vancouver?

(Amused sigh)

Why are you smiling?

There is nothing to smile about!

Peter: I'm not smiling. I'm just... sometimes I feel like you live in this fairy tale world, Lou...

Lou: A fairy tale world?

Do you think that losing Georgie is something that happens in a fairy tale world?

Do you think that when they take her horse away it's gonna be a "happy ever after" moment?

You're the one who lives in a fairy tale world, Peter.

You go to Vancouver and you close your office door and all of this just goes away.

No, it doesn't just go away, Lou...

Maybe if we all lived together in Vancouver we could face the real world together!

Okay, stop. Just stop right there.

How can you drop that on me in the middle of all of this?

I can't...

I can't move to Vancouver.

Why?

Because this is... this is...

Home, right?

It's home for you, I get it.

It's just never been home with me, you know?

We don't have to deal with this now.
Hey, you got a second?

Can I talk to you a minute?

Uh, yeah, later, man.

I got stuff I gotta do with Georgie right now.

(Dog barks)

Georgie: Come on, Remi!

(Dog barks)

That's a good girl. Come here.

Good girl! Good girl! Come on, let's go!

Yeah, such a good girl!

(Giggles)

Good girl!

She should take that dog with her, you know.

She found her. Her name's Remi.

She just loves her.

Well, there's no dogs allowed in my building.

That's too bad. Georgie loves animals.

(Sighs)

Can I ask you something?

Sure.

Amy: Do you really think this is the best thing for her?

I mean, you probably work crazy long hours, right?

What's she gonna do when she comes home from school and you're still at work?

She'll be fine.

You don't know that.

She loves it here, Jeff.

She's the one that asked if she could live with me.

That was a long time ago when she first got here.

Things have changed a lot since then.

(Truck approaches)

I know you love her, but so do Lou and Peter.

What, when they're not fighting with each other?

Or deciding that they're gonna move to Vancouver?

Excuse me?

Hey there.

Hey.

So I didn't hear from you.

I just wondered what your plans are.

Lou: Well, we were thinking that we could give you a deposit, say ten percent, and then pay you the rest on a monthly basis.

Would that work?

Uh, no.

I'm afraid I can't accept just a down payment.

Someone's willing to pay me $35,000 cash.

Can you match that?

No. No, we can't.

Then I'm sorry, but Phoenix is coming with me.

Georgie: It's not fair! He's my horse!

Lou: I know, honey.

And I would do anything to keep him for you, but we just can't afford it right now, so I am going to get you another horse.

I don't want another horse!

I know, and I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

Georgie: No!

Lou: Georgie!

Georgie: No! I won't let you take him!

Lou: Georgie!

Georgie: I won't let you take him!

Amy: Georgie...

Georgie: Give him to me! He's mine!

Eric: Look, I'm sorry, I really am.

I'm gonna find him a really good home, okay?

I promise.

Lou: It's okay, honey.

Eric: Come on.

Lou: It's okay.

Georgie!

Georgie: (Crying) No! Come back! Please!

Lou: Georgie!

(Tearful) I am so sorry.

How could you?!

You know what? I'm glad I'm leaving!

I'm glad I'm going with my brother!

(Crying)

Georgie: (Crying)

Hey.

So Lou went and gave away your horse just like that, huh?

(Sobs)

Real nice.

But, hey, it's not like you woulda... seen him that much.

You're movin' anyway.

Georgie: (Gasps tearfully)

I'm glad that you're coming to live with me 'cause I wasn't sure, you know, how... how you felt about it.

You're happy, right?

(Emotional) 'Cause if you're not... if you wanna stay here, that's uh... that's fine too.

(Tearful) I don't wanna stay.

Look, I'm gonna make it work, Georgie, all right?

It's gonna be great, I promise you. We...

Look, we got a big screen TV. The apartment's all set up.

You can paint your room any colour you want.

There's a school just down the street and... there's a rec centre where all the kids play.

We'll make it work, okay? I promise.

Georgie: (Crying)

Jeff: It's okay.

(Door shuts)

Talked to Clint.

Kid checks out.

Got the job he said he had, makes the money he said he did, and the apartment's real too.

(Sighs)

(Sighs)

Eric took Phoenix.

Georgie is devastated and she hates me.

She doesn't hate you.

Yeah, she does.

She does and she's going with her brother.

She says she wants to...

(Tearful) and who can blame her?

What can I do?

Uh, it's her birthday tomorrow and she wants sparklers.

I don't wanna disappoint her anymore than I already have.

I will find sparklers.

Georgie: Hey, Spartan. Hey, boy.

Jack: So you're goin'.

You know... it feels like, you and me, we've already been down a long road together.

Pretty good road, though.

Thing is, I don't know that I'm ready for it to end.

I'm sure gonna miss ya.

Georgie: I'll miss you too.

You must remember them.

Yeah, I was...

I was ten. They uh...

Lou: I know.

Georgie told me.

Listen, um, Jeff, I'm really happy that you and Georgie have found each other again, but you need to know that Peter and I and Katie... we adore her, and we will do everything for her.

So will I!

Really?

And just how do you plan on doing that?

I will! I've saved up money!

It takes more than money to raise a child properly, Jeff.

And you need to know that we are not gonna just let this happen, okay?

Not just like that.

Not without a fight.

Jeff: We'll see about that.

(Spartan snuffles)

Amy: Good boy.

Hey, your leg's lookin' good!

Well, he's doin' real well.

That's great!

Amy: You heard what happened?

Yeah. I'm sorry we ever told Eric about Phoenix.

And now Georgie's leaving with her brother.

Everything's just gone so wrong.

Amy...

I think it'd be really good for you to get away.

Are you sure it's not just you who wants to get away?

No.

Okay, maybe.

Amy, vet school's gonna take over my life after this next break.

This may be our last chance to get away without any responsibility.

I have responsibility here, Ty.

You have to understand what my family is going through.

And I do, I do, but it's not all up to you.

We gotta think about us.

You have to balance these things.

I can't. I can't.

Look, I know you have a hard time dealing with family issues, but...

No, Amy.

I don't have a hard time dealing with family, but maybe you do.

(Overlapping chatter of diner customers)

Oh, hey, you work here?

No, I just like to wear ugly retro waitress uniforms.

It's part of my "look." (Chuckles)

Can I get you anything?

Uh, yeah, coffee, black, please.

But, hey, look what I got Georgie for her birthday.

Is that real?

Jeff: You kiddin' me? Of course it's real.

Mallory: It must have cost a lot of money.

Yeah, well, I make a lot of money.

Nothing but the best for The Squirt.

Well, it's gonna go really well with her closet full of baggy jeans and sneakers.

I'll get you that coffee.

Lou: (Reading aloud) "There was a big long silence and then... "

Georgie.

Honey, I wish things could be different, you know that.

Georgie: Hey, Katie.

Lou: Georgie, you don't have to go.

We don't want you to go.

We love you.

Georgie: (Sighs emotionally)
I think Jeff needs me.

I'm all he's got.

I have to go.

Lou: Come here.

Lisa: (In letter) "Dear Jack, hi, there, stranger, been a while.

I hope all is well in your part of the world.

Can't tell you how many letters and emails and texts I've written to you and haven't sent, but this time I've taken a deep breath and a leap of faith because I miss you.

Is there any way that we could bridge this gap between us?"

(Door opens)

Tim: I made a decision.

I considered buying your half of the herd, but I'm not gonna do that.

I am gonna sell big river and move, probably head up to Moose Jaw... be close to Shane, and I can mend fences with Miranda.

Fine, move away. Abandon your daughters again.

I'm not abandoning anyone, Jack.

And don't bother showin' up for Georgie's birthday tomorrow.

You are no longer welcome here.

(Sighs)

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Lou: What do you mean you're not coming?

I've been uninvited by your grandpa Jack.

Well, I'm re-inviting you.

Lou, if uh... if you happen to know anybody lookin' for a ranch, I'm puttin' Big River up for sale.

What?!

I think I'm gonna move to Moose Jaw.

Because of grandpa?

No, listen, I see it, I see it now... how you all just put up with me, work around me.

(Frustrated gasp) You know what? Stop!

Just stop, dad!

We're not talking about your problems right now because we have enough problems!

Okay, there's just...

I'm sure you know that Georgie is leaving tomorrow.

What?

So you're coming to the birthday party and I don't want to hear anything else about it!

Why? Why didn't I know about that?

You see? Right there.

That is what I'm talkin' about, Lou...

You better be there!

(Door opens)

(Frustrated sigh)

He says he's moving to Moose Jaw.

Peter: Huh, doesn't surprise me.

He wants to be close to his son.

People do that, you know.

They want to be close to their family and loved ones, which is why I brought up the Vancouver plan.

Not now, honey.

Well, when then?

Lou, when are we gonna discuss it?

Because I'd like an answer, you know.

We need an answer.

(Dog whimpers)

Amy: I guess you didn't get my 50 odd messages?

Ty: I was...

Ty, I'm really sorry.

Look, Amy, I need you to understand somethin'.

I went on a road trip on my own, and I went on a road trip with Jack, and both times I wished you were there, and this is kind of a chance for us.

And I get that things are tough right now, I do, and I get responsibility.

I know you do.

And I get family.

I know.

But you are my family and from now on... it's just the two of us on this crazy journey.

So will you start it with me?

Of course I will.

Mallory: Big move is coming up. Is Georgie excited?

Jeff: Actually, all the kid can talk about is how much she misses that horse of hers.

Oh, and her birthday party. You coming?

Of course.

Good.

Amy: Mallory, can I get a coffee?

What?

When do you plan on taking her?

Why do I feel like I'm the bad guy here?

Look, I...

I need you to know where I'm coming from here.

All right, I always wanted to be my sister's hero.

You know, come in and rescue her from the big bad foster parents.

I mean, it's how I always pictured it and I'm doing it!

You think I'm making a mistake, don't you?

(Sniffs)

All right, I have an idea, but...

I might need your help.

Lou: It's because of you that he's moving away!

Why are you and dad acting like this, grandpa, on top of everything else?!

Don't you think that it's ironic that we have fought so hard for Georgie to call Heartland home and now it's falling apart?!

Grandpa, I don't know how to deal with this!

Well, you've got Peter.

Do I?

I don't know if I do anymore.

(Bucket bangs down)

Jeff: Okay, I don't have $40,000, all right, but I have $25,000 and I have this necklace.

Look, I don't want you to... look, just listen to me, all right?

Look, my sister, she's been shuttled from family to family since she was three-years-old.

All right, she's never had a single thing that she could call her own until she had this horse.

She loves this horse, you gotta see that.

(Horse whinnies outside)

(Hooves clatter on metal ramp)

(Gasps)

You take him.

It's just like I showed you when we loaded him.

You can do it.

(Running footsteps)

Georgie: What's Phoenix doing here?!

He's yours.

I don't get it.

How am I supposed to keep a horse in a two-bedroom apartment?

You won't be keeping him in Fort Mac.

You'll be keeping him here... where you both belong.

You mean...

Are you sure?

And you're not mad?

No, Squirt, I'm not mad at you.

Georgie: (Sighs emotionally)

Jeff: Here.

(Gasps excitedly)

Hey.

Can I stay?

Of course you can.

Georgie: (Gasps happily)

Lou: I promise that I am gonna take such good care of Georgie, and, you know, you're welcome to come and visit us here anytime.

Jeff: Thank you. I appreciate it.

Peter: Okay, I got my answer then.

Lou: (Sighs) Look, Peter, we've done this before.

I moved to Dubai to be part of your world and it didn't work out.

We've gotta figure something else out.

(Sighs)

Georgie: Sparklers?! Oh my gosh, thank you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

(Sparklers crackle)

Peter: Whoa! Georgie: (Giggles excitedly)

Lou: Wow!

All: (Laugh and giggle)

Peter: Yeah!

Ty and Georgie: Woo!

Georgie: (Giggling excitedly)

Yeah!
