AMY: Previously on "Heartland"...

I'm really proud of the way the two of you are pulling your business together.

I've decided to turn all Fairfield vet duties over to the new partnership.

- That's amazing.

- Thank you.

KIM: Good, excellent.

I did it, really?

I would be proud to coach the two of you.

Good boy, Phoenix!

Godzilla retrospective.

Yeah, I was thinking we could go together.

Yeah like, the uh, friend date.

Maybe like a real date.

You know, I just, I wanna thank you.

You know, the advice you gave me, following my heart.

I think it's gonna work out with Maya and I.

(WATER SPLASHES)

Diamond, let's go.

Easy, boy.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Easy, boy.

Easy, boy!

Diamond, settle!

Whoa!

Ah!

Oh!

Oh!

Oh...

(GASPS)

(PAINED CRY)

TY: Hogan's still experiencing some discomfort from the surgery.

But he's a lot better than last week, aren't you, buddy?

Good.

(GATE CREAKS)

Okay...

So I think we can go down to -milliliters of Bute for the next five days.

- Great, thank you.

- You're welcome.

What about sh**ting Star?

Oh, she's doing well.

The ligaments in her leg are starting to heal.

So she won't need any painkillers.

Well, when will she be able to race again?

Not for a while, I'd keep her on stall rest for now.

That's too bad.

Lisa had really high hopes for her this season.

(TAKES A DEEP BREATH)

Actually...

there's one more horse I'd like you to look at.

Okay.

(AGITATED SNORTING)

That's Diamond.

He's my horse.

Is he always this high strung?

No.

I mean, that's-that's the thing.

He was the perfect horse, and then a couple weeks ago I started to notice changes in his behaviour.

One minute he was totally normal, and then the next, this.

I'm afraid to go near him now.

Well, if you're okay with it, we can bring Diamond to Heartland, and Amy and I can take a look at him, see if we can figure out what's goin' on.

I know what's going on.

You see that man there?

That's Tony.

He's had a chip on his shoulder ever since Lisa promoted me to manager.

I know he did something to my horse.

What did he do?

He's trained Diamond to hurt me on purpose.

And I need you and Amy to prove it.

AMY: What Laura's accusing this guy of doing sounds pretty crazy.

Yeah, I know.

But do you think it's possible, though?

Could someone train a horse to throw a rider?

I guess.

I don't know, it would be pretty difficult to prove.

What did you say to Laura?

Well, I told her we'd look at the horse.

- (SIGHS)

- Well, what else could I say?

There's obviously something goin' on with Diamond, and she's our boss, at least until Lisa gets back.

- It's okay, I got her.

- Okay.

Oh hey, did you um...

pick up those business cards?

(LYNDY CRIES)

Oh sorry, I forgot.

Um, I'll get 'em tomorrow, okay?

Okay, promises, promises.

- Hi, honey.

- Hey.

- How was your run?

- Really good, thanks.

So Kim Price called, she confirmed she will be here tomorrow afternoon.

Okay...

You know, you guys didn't have to fly in for this meeting.

You could've just called.

What?

We wanted to be here in person.

Kim said it was important.

Any idea what it's about?

No, I wish I did.

JACK: What did he want?

He said that he wanted to discuss business.

And he said, the sooner, the better.

- That's all he said?

- Yeah, that's it.

Well, you don't think he's unhappy with us, do you?

Well, Fred's been selling Heartland beef in his grocery stores for over six months now, he hasn't had a bad thing to say about it.

Yeah, I could guess that's true...

until now.

You know what we should do?

We should have him here for a barbecue tomorrow.

Whatever business he's gotta talk about, it should be over a quality Heartland steak.

The best thing he's ever had, just something to remind him why he's doing business with us.

Sure, if that's what you wanna do.

Yeah, it is.

And I've got just the thing to make this perfect.

I'll-I'll be right back.

No way she's gonna drop you.

Why would she?

Because I've heard things about Kim.

If she doesn't think a jumper is worth her time, she sits With whoever writes the cheques and says, "thanks, but no thanks." Yeah well, you know what?

You don't need her.

Because according to a very not-fake-news publication, you're "Georgie Fleming-Morris, Future Olympian." What if the article got it wrong?

It didn't.

You know how I know?

How?

Because I only date future Olympians.

- Really?

- Yeah, yeah, it's a very strict policy.

Usually gymnasts, or beach volleyball players.

- You're my first equestrian.

- Wow, I'm very lucky.

Yeah, yeah, you're-you are.

JACK: What's goin' on?

I already have a barbecue.

Yeah, but not like this.

This one is way better.

I just talked to my buddy, who knows everything there is about barbeques, he says that that is the best.

Not that I'm saying yours isn't great, Jack, but it's just, you know, it's good for family things, this is a special occasion.

Well, I agree, which is why we should be using a charcoal barbecue.

It's a little more work but charcoal has the smoke, and tons more flavour.

Mine's ready to go, it's in the quonset.

Well that, that's got a charcoal/smoker combo basket, so if it's flavour you want, it's flavour you're gonna get.

Plus, my buddy said that we should actually try this...

What the heck is that?

It's called a sous vide.

It's for cooking steaks in a water bath.

I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear that.

We are gonna grill Heartland steak the right way, and have a business meeting, that is all.

Okay, fine.

I just, I guess I don't see the harm in having all this stuff around just in case.

Fine.

You can cook the potatoes in your fancy water bath if you want, but the steaks aren't going anywhere near this thing.

(NERVOUS NICKERS)

Okay.

So if someone were to train a horse to throw a rider, how do you think they'd do it?

Well, I don't know if train is the right word.

More like abuse.

If someone was aggressive to Diamond time and time again, eventually he would lash out.

(SIGHS)

So do you think Diamond was abused?

It's hard to say, but...

he's definitely head shy, and he doesn't feel comfortable around people.

But there's odd about his behaviour, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Well, I'm almost done here.

I wanna get these to the lab before they close.

You gonna be okay with this guy?

- Yeah, or he jumped.

- Yeah.

- Hey!

- Hey.

Do you guys know whose horse this is?

Yeah, that's Diamond, one of our client horses, - where did you find him?

- Not too far from here.

He's so calm.

We could barely get him relaxed yesterday.

He seems pretty chill now.

Yeah, he's like a different horse.

(SIGHS)

So uh...

what do you think?

Interested in the car?

I don't know, you know?

See, the thing about a nice car is, you just end up worrying about it all the time.

And it becomes kinda like your kid.

If it got scratched, or dented, or even the tiniest little scuff mark on it, you'd be so consumed with anger and rage that you'd have no choice but to just hunt down whoever laid a finger on her, and...

just crush and destroy them with your bare hands.

You know what I'm saying, right?

Loud and clear.

Good.

(CAR DOOR OPENS)

(POLICE RADIO CHATTER)

Good.

(MAKING POPPING SOUNDS)

(PAPER RUSTLES)

Thank you, officer.

Again, sorry about the speeding, I uh...

You have yourself a good day.

Thanks, you too.

Not a word.

Diamond managed to get out of our back field.

Has he ever jumped fences before?

From time to time.

I-I used to show him years ago.

I guess he still has a little bit of jump left in him.

Oh, he sometimes ends up in the neighbour's yards.

It's become a bit of a bad habit.

Are there any other bad habits that you didn't tell us about?

I'm-I'm sorry, it must've slipped my mind.

I've just, I've been really overwhelmed with work, and everything that's been going on with Diamond.

I'm just so glad to see him settled.

More importantly though, did you find any evidence of Tony counter-training him?

Well see, I find it really hard to believe that anyone would train a horse to hurt another person.

Are you sure that's what happened?

Yes, I'm sure.

When I got my promotion, Tony made it very clear he did not think I deserved the job.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw him handling Diamond.

He was really rough.

That's when he started acting up.

If you don't trust Tony, why don't you just fire him?

Because I know Lisa.

She would never let me do something without just cause, that's why I need proof.

Okay well, I think we should talk to Tony, get as much information as we can.

- Thanks, Laura.

- Oh, hold on, uh...

there's something you should know.

Um...

before Tony started working here, he spent some time in prison.

Lisa hired him as an act of charity, but I have never trusted him, not for a minute.

(GOLF CART RUMBLES)

(ENGINE IDLES, SHUTS OFF)

Hey, it's Tony, right?

I'm Ty Borden, and this is my wife, Amy.

Hey.

Yeah, I've seen you two around.

We're just uh, we're just trying to figure out what's going on with Diamond.

You mean Jekyll and Hyde?

That's what I call him.

One moment he's an angel, the next he's freaking out.

So you've worked with Diamond, then?

No.

I just train the racehorses.

Well, Laura mentioned that she might've seen you with him.

I don't go near that horse.

Okay, well, if you can think of anything, a reason why Diamond's acting up, that would really help us.

I don't have a clue.

Excuse me.

Okay.

(HORSES SNORT) Thanks.

- Hey, Kim's here.

- Hey.

- Whose car is that?

- That's mine.

- Yours?

As in, you bought it?

- Yeah, yeah.

It's a little gift to myself, you know?

(BOTH CHUCKLE)

Dad, um, this is my trainer, Kim Price.

Hello, Mr.

Morris.

Hey, ah, call me Peter, please.

- Nice to finally meet you.

- Oh, you as well.

- You wanna...

- Sure, thank you.

Well, now that we're all here, I'll just get right to the point.

Georgie and I have only been training together for a few months, but in that short time, I have seen her grow incredibly as a jumper.

Thank you.

She's focused and disciplined, but more importantly, she's talented.

I see really exciting things for her in her future, and that's why I wanted to talk to you today.

There's a stable in Switzerland that runs a training camp for up and coming jumpers.

They only take a few riders every year, and I would like to put Georgie's name forward.

LOU: Wow, Switzerland.

Yeah, it's very exciting.

If she were accepted, she would be trained by the world's top equestrians, and have the opportunity to compete on the European circuit.

(SIGHS)

Uh, how long would she be there for?

Just over four months.

But now, keep in mind, my recommendation alone is not gonna be enough.

Georgie will have to place well at all of her shows this season in order to qualify.

So no pressure then, right?

(ALL CHUCKLE)

The other thing to consider is the cost.

It's expensive, so keep that in mind.

Hmm, well um...

how do you feel about all this, Georgie?

Um, I'm not sure, it's a lot to process.

It's a big decision, so take some time, think about it, but I will have to know by the end of the week.

- I'm so sorry, I have to run.

- Okay.

If it's a yes, just fill out the forms, and I'll get the wheels in motion.

Okay.

TY: Tony!

Amy and I are just trying to do our job, man.

So am I.

So why are you stonewalling us?

Because I know you're just Laura's little lackeys.

She thinks I have something to do with Diamond going off the deep end.

And now she's hired you to prove it.

Well, why don't you help us figure out what's really going on, then.

I'm telling you the truth.

I don't know.

But who's gonna believe me?

Maybe I would.

What Laura's accusing you of isn't fair.

So instead of fighting me, why don't you help me figure this out?

How?

You work here.

Tell me what you know about Diamond.

You gotta see things.

Okay.

He goes on and off his feed.

He's lost a bit of weight.

A few weeks ago, he seemed lethargic.

And then after that, he started acting crazy.

That's all I know.

Okay, thanks.

That helps.

(HORSE WHINNIES)

Hey...

I like working here.

I wish Lisa hadn't left Laura in charge, But...

I still like training the racehorses.

Anything you can do to help me keep my job...

I'd really appreciate it.

(BIRDS CHIRP)

(RASPING)

(WATER BUBBLES)

Well, Fred should be here pretty soon, so you might as well get started on the potatoes.

Mhmm.

What the...

(WATER DRIPS)

Oh Jack, uh, uh, don't!

Put that back in.

The app says that they're not supposed to be out...

The app?!

Are you kidding me?

I thought we agreed we were gonna grill the steaks.

Yeah well, we did, but I, I figure in the spirit of partnership, you can cook the steak how you want, I'll cook it how I want.

You're not gonna let this go, are you?

No.

No, I'm not.

Besides, the more options Fred has on his plate, the more it highlights our product.

It doesn't matter what steak he likes best.

We'll both be winners.

Come on, what do you say?

You're on.

(LID CLANKS, RASPING)

So if Diamond is going on and off his feed, and he has depression, that could be signs of mental trauma?

Or a medical condition.

Well, what did the bloodwork say?

Diamond has a slightly elevated white blood cell count.

And his AST levels are a bit higher than normal.

Okay, so what would that mean?

It could be anything, I have to run some more tests first.

I'm gonna head back to Fairfield after lunch.

Well, I'd like to come with you.

Okay.

Cooler's full, Fred, help yourself to a drink.

Thanks, Jack.

Things are just about ready to go here.

You sit back, enjoy a beer, Mitch and I will be right with you.

(SIZZLING, COOKER BEEPS)

Oh.

(TIMER BEEPS)

Yeah, you know, I can tell when a steak is ready just by the feel of it.

Yeah well, this is just a little more accurate, so...

Is it supposed to look like that?

I don't know.

Well, nothing like a boiled hunk of grey meant.

It's fine, it's better than fine, it's gonna be amazing once I get it on the barbeque, and sear it.

(WET PLOP)

Ah!

Okay...

Yeah, it's a shame to hide the flavour of a nice cut of steak with BBQ sauce.

You know for me, a little salt and pepper goes a long way.

Everybody likes BBQ sauce.

Hey Fred, you like your steak with or without BBQ sauce?

Fred, before you answer that, just let me tell you, this is homemade, family recipe BBQ sauce.

You know, sometimes a good cut of steak tastes better just on its own, right, Fred?

I'm good either way, I'm not picky.

(LAUGHS)

(SIZZLING)

(HOOVES CLOMP)

Hi!

TY: What's going on, Laura?

Diamond jumped the fence again.

I-I told my staff not to leave him unattended, but...

It's okay, we'll help you find him.

Diamond?

- Hey.

- Anything?

No.

Oh, Ty!

(SQUEALING WHINNY)

Tony!

What are you doing?

- Tony!

- Hey, let him go!

Hey!

(LOUD WHINNY)

Oh!

Ah!

Ah!

AMY: Diamond!

Whoa...

Hey, you're okay.

You see?

That is what he does.

It's no wonder Diamond threw me.

He was acting like that when I found him, I was just trying to get him under control.

You are a liar, and I am not gonna let you get away with this!

(BUTTONS BEEP)

Here you go, Fred, I think you're gonna find that the BBQ sauce gives this a whole new level of flavour.

And I think you'll find this one speaks for itself.

Wow, this is a lot of meat.

Well, dig in.

Well, good thing I brought my appetite.

(FORK CLINKS)

Mmm, mhmm!

Mhmm, mhmm.

Mmm!

Just delicious.

- See?

That's good.

- Oh.

These are both so delicious.

But...

hypothetically, if you had to pick the best one, what steak would you pick?

Oh, it's a tough call, um...

but I think I'd have to give it to you, Mitch.

It's just so juicy and tender.

But honestly, they're both so good.

I'm just proud to carry such high quality product in my stores.

I'd like to make a toast.

To a great partnership.

And to say my customers are loving Heartland beef is an understatement, which is actually the reason I came here today.

Garland foods would like to increase our order.

By how much?

Double.

And as soon as possible.

Sorry, uh, double?

Like I said, my customers, they can't get enough.

Well, cheers to that.

- Right, Jack?

- Yeah, of course.

Cheers.

Now, let's eat this steak!

These jumping world snobs are bad enough here in Hudson.

Imagine what they're like on this European circuit.

Georgie knows how to deal with stuck-up jumpers.

No, I know, I'm just saying, it doesn't change the fact that this is a pretty exclusive club, I mean, I know we're not exactly poor, we're not millionaires, either.

This might be out of our reach, Lou.

Peter we have to at least explore it.

I mean, this could be a big deal for Georgie.

You wanna play with your blocks?

I agree, but I think we need to be realistic about it.

Right?

The cost of shipping Georgie and her horse to Switzerland for four months, it's gonna be pretty steep.

Okay, then I'll just figure out how to send her on my own.

(SIGHS)

Oh, don't be ridiculous.

Yeah, and then you can continue living out your mid-life crisis in that car you pulled up in.

Wow.

Couldn't wait to throw that in my face, huh?

Okay, I'm sorry, it was a low blow.

Besides, it's no Porsche, but we both have expensive taste.

Look.

We can each make decisions about how we spend our own money.

But this isn't about a car, or a stupid necklace, this is about Georgie's future.

I don't know where she's getting this from.

I'm not trying to hurt her.

The neighbor called, and said that Diamond was roaming around in their field, I just went over there to get him.

No, you did something to him.

We saw the way that you were treating him.

Diamond was traumatized.

Is that true?

He was being pretty rough with the horse.

Uh, but that doesn't prove anything, though, okay?

I-I didn't say it did.

Well, just because he was being rough with Diamond, doesn't mean he was trying to hurt Laura.

No, but treating a horse roughly could cause it to act out!

But it could be a medical condition.

We still have to do some more tests.

Okay, so bottom line, you don't think Tony had anything to do with the horse's behaviour?

Well no, I think that there was s...

I think it's too early to say at this point.

We're still trying to figure out what's goin' on - with Diamond, right, Amy?

- Mhmm.

Okay.

It sounds to me like you've got an out of control horse here.

No real proof that he had anything to do with it.

I know what I saw.

Well, call me when you have some real evidence.

This is ridiculous!

I made some chicken.

I ate dinner at the diner, so.

Okay, listen.

Your dad and I, are still discussing this equestrian camp.

I'm sorry we don't quite have an answer for you yet.

That's okay, I'm not gonna apply anyway.

What?

I thought that you would be excited about going.

I don't think I'm ready for the European circuit.

I'd rather just focus on local shows.

Besides, it's a lot of money.

I just don't think it's worth it.

(SIGHS)

PETER: Yeah, I'm still getting used to this car, you know, it's uh, it's pretty punchy, actually.

I just bought it, so.

Congratulations.

Yeah, a spur of the moment kind of thing.

In that case, I'll just let you off the hook.

Are you kidding me?

Really?

No.

Have a nice day.

Thank you.

You, too.

(CAR RUMBLES)

(LOUD CLUNK, HISSING)

(SHUTS OFF ENGINE)

Perfect.

(DIAMOND NICKERS)

Why did you contradict me in front of a client?

I was just telling the truth about what I saw.

Amy, I know you were, but I think we need to give Tony the benefit of a doubt.

Especially since we don't have any real proof.

Yeah, I'm fine giving Tony the benefit of a doubt.

What I'm not okay with is you interrupting me and contradicting me in front of our client!

Well, sometimes...

sometimes you can be a little quick to judge, when it comes to people you think are responsible for hurting horses, okay?

What did you think I was gonna do, Ty?

Tell the officer to arrest him?

No, I...

I didn't want you to say something that would inadvertently get him into more trouble.

You don't give me a lot of credit, do you?

Amy, that's not what this is about!

When we first decided to start working together, I knew we wouldn't always agree on everything.

But I never for a second thought that you would treat me like that in front of a client!

(CAR DOOR OPENS, JACK GRUNTS)

Thank you so much, Jack.

I appreciate it.

Of course there's a spare in the trunk, but no tire iron.

I'm starting to wish I'd never bought this thing.

Oh yeah?

You having a little buyer's remorse, are you?

Yeah, a little bit, maybe.

It's just a bad time to make a big purchase too, you know?

Georgie's got this exciting opportunity in Europe.

A very expensive exciting opportunity.

Hmm, Lou said as much.

To tell you the truth, I mean, it's not the money so much, it's just...

I'm trying to get my head around her being away from home for so long, you know?

You know, Lou was barely -years-old when she went away to university.

You know, one minute she was a little girl, and the next, she's running her own business in New York City.

- Huh!

- Well, that is Lou we're talking about, right?

I mean, I didn't know her back then, but I'm sure she was just as brave and independent - as she is now.

My mom kept track of plants that are poisonous to horses.

And some of them just look like wildflowers, but they're actually really dangerous.

Oh, hey, here we go.

Locoweed.

Locoweed, I just saw something on locoweed here.

Yeah.

(READS)

"Ingesting locoweed causes brain damage in livestock." It makes them act crazy.

Okay, so Diamond isn't being abused.

He's being poisoned.

So I uh, I talked to Tim this morning.

He's pretty excited about the new deal.

I think we should tell Fred we can't do it.

W-why, what are you talking about?

The only way to keep our old customers, and double Fred's order, is to increase the size of the herd. That means buying more cattle from who knows where, we'll be getting 'em fat just to get 'em outta here as fast as we can.

We'll be nothing more than a feedlot.

That's not quality, that's mass production.

Okay.

I think there is a way that we can expand production without sacrificing the quality.

It's too risky, we should let it go.

I can't let this go, Jack.
