[Dramatic drumbeats]

[Baby continues wailing]

[Muffled grunts in mask]

[Dramatic drumbeats]

[Monitor flatlining, siren wailing]

[Drumbeats quicken]

You're up early.

Hey.

Yeah, I went for a run, showered up, made some coffee.

A little nervous energy, maybe?

No, no, I'm cool.

Then why are you organizing my T-shirt drawer?

[Chuckles]

A little nervous, yeah.

You're gonna be fine.

So are you.

[Groaning] Yep.

I'm ready to get back.

Doctor gave me a clean bill of health.

Baby, hey, hey. Whoa, whoa, whoa, hey.

You okay?

Ohh...

Ha ha ha ha!

Don't do that! Don't do that again.

Sorry.

I'm sorry.

[Laughs]

Hey, I was thinking about coming by the house before reporting to the academy.

I just feel like we should tell people before they hear about it from somebody else.

Tell them...

You are cruisin'. I swear to God.

Are you kidding?

I want the whole world to know that you're my girl.

Hey, let me tell Mills, okay?

Just out of respect.

Yeah. Sure.

Policies, procedures, class roster.

It's all there. Riveting stuff.

Any knuckleheads I need to know about?

They're recruits.

Put 'em through their paces.

If they can't pull it off, give 'em the boot.

That's what the academy is for.

So even though I'm only teaching one class, I can do that?

Yup.

Sounds good.

How are things over at 51?

Great.

Busy.

I understand one of your guys is mixed up in a m*rder case.

Yeah, we're still trying to wrap our heads around that one.

I'll see you tomorrow, Chief.

How long do I have to wear this?

Until your trial's over, unless you want to tell me what happened that night, and we avoid a trial altogether.

You have to talk to my lawyer. I got nothing to say.

See you in court, then.

Yeah! I called it! I called it!

Did I not call it?

[Laughter]

No.

Oh, yeah, I told Cindy. But, hey, I called it!

I knew you two were meant for each other.

Me too! Randy McHolland.

I knew you guys were gonna be turtledoves one day.

It all worked out. Thanks, guys.

Happy for you.

Oh, hey.

I'm gonna be in your rescue class tomorrow.

I saw that.

And I know that we're friends, but don't give me any special treatment, all right?

Don't worry.

[Laughs]

Uh... call you later.

Yeah.

[Clears throat] Hey, Mills.

What's up, Dawson? Hey, big day today.

Oh, yeah. Yeah.

[Laughs]

Um...

Hey, you got a sec?

I want you to be happy.

That's all I ever wanted, and I'm glad you found the guy who could do that for you.

[Exhales]

Thank you.

Hey, uh, kick some ass at the academy.

[Laughs] I plan on it.

[Whistling]

Hey, Lieutenant?

Boden wants everybody in the briefing room.

Yeah.

I'm just gonna change out.

Be right there.

[Overlapping chatter, shouting]

Okay, I have just heard from C.P.D.

Clarke is out on bond.

He'll remain on suspension until further notice.

That's crazy if he did it.

If?

The round came from his g*n.

The b*ll*ts came from a type of g*n that Clarke owns.

Get your facts straight.

Oh, I stand corrected.

Enough.

Clarke comes in this house for any reason, he is innocent until proven guilty.

We treat him like a brother.

He's not gonna come by. I already talked to him.

He doesn't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Then moving on...

I'd like you all to give a nice warm welcome to our new paramedic-in-charge, Ms. Allison Rafferty.

[Applause]

Hey, guys.

Hey!

I look forward to working with you all.

Hey, welcome aboard, kid.

Where you from? Tell us about yourself.

Well, I was over at 24 before I came here, but I've been in Chicag...

[Alarm beeps]

Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61, Battalion 25, single-car accident...

Hey, Rafferty.

Yeah.

I'm Shay. I'm gonna... I'm gonna be your partner.

Yeah, I've heard a lot about you.

[Sirens wailing, horns blasting]

Oh, man, I've never seen nothing like that before.

This dude came just out of nowhere.

Anybody hit?

Nah, man, but the driver...

Out of the way, guys.

[Gasping, panting]

Got a blown-out tire on the front passenger side.

Let's get some cribbing in here and stabilize this car.

Pressure's 80 palp. Heart rate 120.

All right, airway's clear. No sign of a bleed.

Okay, listen. He got real lucky.

The rebar's probably sitting right on his carotid.

You have to be super careful when you move him.

I mean, a millimeter in the wrong direction, okay?

The only way he's coming out is if we cut that rebar on either other side of him.

You stabilize, I cut?

Right.

Capp, shears.

[Rescue radio chatter]

What's your name?

Jeremy.

My name's Matt.

We're gonna do this together, all right?

All right, here we go.

Here we go.

[Shears whirring]

[Metal squeaks]

Aah! Stop! Stop!

It's okay.

[Whimpering]

We're gonna figure out another way.

Shears are torqueing the rebar.

It's gonna push that rod right through his carotid.

We got to use something else to cut it.

Saw's out of the question.

Vibrations could hit that artery.

What about a torch?

We'd be taking a chance with the heat.

Chief, what do you think?

Get the torch.

Capp! Give me that blanket.

[Hyperventilating]

His heart rate is elevated.

You gotta keep him calm or he'll go into v-tach.

Right.

Okay, Jeremy, just take it easy.

We're gonna get you out.

[Groaning] I'm gonna die.

You're not. Okay?

I was in your exact same spot six weeks ago.

One breath at a time.

Okay. Other side.

[Torch sizzling]

I'm gonna die.

Jeremy, I bet you a six-pack you make it through this.

[Torch sizzling continues]

And it'll be the best beer you ever tasted, 'cause you'll be so glad you're alive while you're drinking it.

[Cries out]

Fight through it.

You gotta want to live.

You can do this.

Okay. Okay.

Okay.

All right, he's good to go.

Gently.

Easy. Easy.

Keep him stable.

Lower.

Okay. Good.

All right, let's go.

Welcome back, Lieutenant.

Mouch, while you were out...

Thank you, Connie. You look nice.

Oh, Boden is not gonna take too kindly to you hijacking his assistant.

Not everybody knows Randy McHolland's number yet.

Besides, this is all Union business.

Ultimately, this benefits the chief.

Is it me, or does he have a screw loose lately?

Herrmann, did you forget to pay a bill or something?

No. Why?

Well, Molly just got this letter from the Union financing corporation asking for our financial records.

Oh, yeah. This could be a major problem.

Yeah.

Or, Otis, it could be a scam.

Or, Herrmann, if you'd bothered to read the contents of the letter, you'd see that they're sending representatives to meet us in person, they have a phone number, and their business address is legitimate.

[Sighs]

So how'd you end up in Chicago?

Oh, my, uh... my dad got accepted to Northwestern.

Yeah, he went back to school after my parents had all five kids.

My mom was a nurse, and she put my dad through school.

Sounds like you got a great mom.

Yeah, for sure.

Hey, can I have seconds?

Help yourself.

Your uniform, gear, and locker assignment is in room "A".

Report for roll call in the drill hall.

[Background chatter]

Hi, my name's Gabriela Dawson...

Yes, pick up your uniform, gear, and locker assignment in room "A" and report for roll call in the drill hall.

[Siren wailing]

In here! My friend's inside!

They just left her on the table.

I was waiting outside while the doctor was working on her, and then I saw him run out and get in his car.

That bastard just took off!

What's your friend's name?

Shelly.

I'm Tina.

What exactly's going on here, Tina?

She was getting some work done, but...

He wasn't a real doctor, was he?

Doctors don't generally buy their medical supplies from Home Depot.

He was filling her with silicone and cement.

Heart rate's 50. Borderline brady.

She's definitely allergic to something in this cocktail.

Give me an airway.

[Air hisses]

You're in.

[Monitor beeping]

She's going into v-fib!

Do something!

Stand back, Tina.

All right, prepare to shock.

Shocking.

[Thump]

[Monitor beeping]

Pushing epi.

[Air hisses]

She's still in v-fib.

Shocking.

[Thump]

[Air hisses]

We got a pulse.

Okay.

Okay, it's official. I've seen everything.

I mean, don't get me wrong.

I like a big caboose as much as the next guy, but how do you pay a charlatan 1,500 bucks to pump construction adhesive into your ass?

I mean, have you ever been on a call like that before, like a back-alley plastic surgeon?

I haven't.

Hey, Rafferty, have we ever worked together before?

No.

Did I, like, uh, steal your seat at a C.F.D. barbecue or something [chuckles] Not that I recall.

Then how come you're so warm and friendly with everybody, but I get the ice queen?

Okay. [Sighs]

I had this partner over at 24.

Brenda Billings. Maybe you know her?

Uh-uh.

She would make calls to her girlfriend that would sometimes get a little... graphic.

I was friendly with her, and I guess she read that as an invitation to say whatever was on her mind, appropriate or otherwise.

Bottom line, I respect your lifestyle choice.

I just don't want it shoved in my face.

[Over P.A.] Attention, candidates...

Hey. Hi. I'm Gabriela Dawson.

Rebecca Jones.

You work with Lieutenant Severide over at 51, right?

I did, yeah.

You know, we're lucky we got him.

A lot of the other instructors got canned from their houses.

They're totally padding the faculty to keep these guys employed.

It's kind of sad.

Actually, a lot of the guys who got let go, their houses were shut down by the state.

It's not their fault.

Yeah, but there's gotta be a reason some houses closed.

Only the tough ones survive, right?

All right, candidates! Let's move it!

Hup, hup! Speed! Let's go!

Let's do it!

Come on, come on, too slow!

Let's go, people!

Class...

Ten-hut!

Candidates, welcome to the Chicago Fire Academy.

How long to make it?

Everyone chips in... three weeks.

I don't have a whole lot of construction experience.

Can you swing a hammer?

I get it... this is your chance to be my boss and yell at me at a job site.

Yeah, that's true.

Okay.

I won't deny that.

In the process... [Taps table] we get to make this.

All we need is a space to work.

You know, I got a buddy over at the boatyard probably has a dry dock that'll work.

Then we're off and running.

[Papers rustling]

Hey.

You good? No after-effects or anything?

Never better.

Hey, Lieutenant.

Can I duck out for a couple minutes?

I'll keep my radio on.

Everything all right?

Yeah. Clarke.

Hey, Otis.

Hey.

Katie, hi.

Hi. I'm just dropping off some chocolate chip cookies.

Kelly really likes the ones that I make.

Or he's blowing smoke up my ass. Who knows?

[Laughs] Either way, I made a double batch for everybody.

Mmm.

[Giggles]

Are you still living with him and Shay?

Uh, moving out, actually.

Oh, well, I'm gonna be there for dinner on Wednesday.

Ah.

Cruz and I have a movie date.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. What is this?

Oh, it's nothing. I just... here, just take the cookies.

This is Settlers of Catan.

Don't front like you know the game.

Created in Germany, originally called Die Siedler Von Catan.

That game?

Don't mess with me.

Grain or ore?

What do you trade for?

Well, depends on if I'm playing seafarers or cities and knights, but as a general rule, grain, of course.

You can't win the game without grain.

You should come to dinner on Wednesday.

I'd love to.

Chief, you need me?

Yeah.

A lawyer contacted me...

McHolland.

Can't talk. In a meeting.

Can't talk.

[Beep]

Please sit down.

A lawyer contacted the Union looking to talk to you.

Regarding?

Darryl Bell's su1c1de.

Uh, what about it?

Didn't say.

Refused, rather.

Here's the attorney's information.

I don't want it. They can, uh... they can subpoena me or...

Whatever this is about, the Union is behind you 100%.

I'll be there for you personally until you hire your own attorney, if it comes to that.

Listen to me.

Please do not let this shake you.

What happened to Darryl was a tragedy, but it was his, not yours.

Your Union, your chief, your family here at 51... we're all right behind you every step of the way.

Hey.

Thanks for coming.

Sure.

What's up, Pete?

What's up?

All right, look.

You're friends with Clarke, right?

What is this about?

We're trying to get through to him, but he's in full jarhead mode.

The longer he keeps his mouth shut, the better he looks for this m*rder.

Okay.

You didn't get this from us.

And the only reason we're doing this is because we're all family here.

We finally got access to Hayes's phone records.

Went through his texts.

Lisa was cheating on you with Hayes, okay?

Leave now, Mills. Now!

I've seen the texts where she's calling him out.

"Who is this new slut you're parading around town?"

Dude, she is jealous. She is jealous, and this... this is a day before he was k*lled, man.

First of all, what... what are you, a cop now?

Where the hell did you see these texts, huh?

Hayes was not coming around 'cause she owed him money.

She wanted him around, all right?

And when he found somebody new, she didn't like it.

All right, you came down here and you said what you had to say.

I'm telling you one more time.

Leave.

Dude, she's letting you take this ride, and you do not even know the whole story.

I'm telling you, you better walk away, Mills.

You better walk away before I lay you out!

Fine.

Fall out.

Kelly.

Who?

Instructor Severide.

What can I do for you, candidate?

Um, I got a text.

Herrmann and Otis are dealing with some bank stuff regarding the bar.

Can I duck in real quick?

No.

[Sighs]

As you can see, we have a legal and binding signed contract from Mr. Stephanides.

It's a valid document.

I followed all the instructions.

We can work with this.

The problem is, Mr. Stephanides didn't have ownership standing to transfer the property because the bank held a lien on the bar.

Meaning?

The bank owns Molly's.

Oh!

Oh, am I?

Uh-huh.

Well, this sucker is about to build a new settlement.

Hmm, I would check the building cost card, if I were you, because I believe you need brick to build a settlement... not ore.

What?

Oh, nuts. I...

Mmm.

Can you let it slide just this one time... because I'm cute?

Well, you are pretty cute.

Are you gonna kiss me?

Do you want me to?

Only if you want to.

Do you want to?

Yes.

[Door opens]

[Door closes]

Hey, Kelly!

Hello.

C.F.D. is in great hands, guys.

Absolutely nothing to worry about.

Did you guys drink all the beer?

All right, well, I'm heading to Molly's.

Gonna buy Mills a drink for making Squad, if either of you wanna go.

Oh, um, actually, I was just about to go, uh, do this thing, uh, down in Wicker Park.

Are you... are you good to drive?

Because I'm actually... I think I'm gonna head in that general direction, so I could take you.

Yeah, that would be... that'd be great, if... yeah, if you don't... if...

Oh, no, not at all. Let's go.

Okay.

See ya.

Hey, yeah. Have fun.

Bye.

See ya... hey.

Drive safe.

To Peter Mills!

A real smoke-eater, even though he couldn't hack it on Truck.

Oh, thank you Herrmann. Thank you.

You know, I can't even believe I'm saying this, but it looks like that bloodsucker at the bank is gonna screw me on the bar.

There's not gonna be too many more nights like this at Molly's so in light of that, my brothers, 10% off all the drinks tonight!

Uh, okay.

Hmm.

Anyway, congrats, Mills.

[Laughs]

You know, a firefighter brother recently asked me what makes a good Squad guy.

He said, "hey, Randy McHolland, what makes... "

Hold up, hold up, hold up.

Mouch, why do you keep referring to yourself in the third person?

Okay, look.

I'm trying to subtly reinforce my real name so you guys will start calling me that, 'cause now that I'm interim president, I don't think a nickname that means half man, half couch is appropriate anymore.

Well, then why don't you just say, "hey, guys, quit calling me Mouch"?

You're right. I should've.

So can you quit calling me Mouch?

No.

Mills, make a speech.

[Laughter]

Uh, I just want to say thank you guys for your help, support, and, Lieutenant, I'm gonna come through for you.

I know you will.

All: Cheers.

Cheers to it.

Salud.

All right, brothers.

Ahh. Gonna miss you, baby.

Yeah, oh.

Ah, that's good.

Forget about what I said about discounts.

Gimme another beer.

[Indistinct chatter]

We heard.

Yeah.

Look, I know that wasn't easy, so... wanna go get drunk?

Yeah, I need to be with some family.

Come on, brother.

Hey! Look who made it.

Hey!

Hey!

How you doing, ugly?

Hey, brother, here you go.

Visiting hours ended.

I just need five minutes.

Okay.

Thank you.

Five.

All right.

[Knocks at door]

Hey, Jeremy.

I forgot your name.

Matt.

Do you remember the bet we made?

I do.

You, uh, got family in town?

No. My sister, she's gonna be here tomorrow from Scottsdale.

Is this gonna mix with the pain K*llers I'm on?

Can't hurt.

I'm so glad to be alive.

[Chuckles]

Cheers.

Cheers.
