Previously on Arctic Air...

The prodigal son returns.

So, how's life in the gleaming office towers of Vancouver?

[Bobby]: Mel could land in a bowling alley.

[Krista]: Yeah, sure. He's 10 feet tall.

He's going to live forever.

The end of the world, there'll be cockroaches and Mel bloody Ivarson.

Bobby can dominate a dinner party without even showing up.

Krista, marry me.

Hey, Bobby, Krista just said yes.

I smell smoke.

Oh, God.

Everyone buckled in back there?

This is it!

[Krista]: It's bad, Bobby.

Wreckage is scattered pretty far.

Mel's walked away from crashes before.

Not like this.

[Blake]: Krista, we don't know what we're going to find here.

[Krista]: Just help me find my dad.

Dad!

[Groaning in pain]

Blake, she isn't moving.

Loreen?

We can't wait!

We've got to outfit our own med-evac.

Bobby can't land her on skis.

What makes you think it's Bobby?

[Mel]: Sure as hell isn't someone who knows what they're doing.

Power maximum!

Bring 'er up short!

[Krista]: You saved his life...

Krista!

Bobby, thank God.

My worst nightmare?

You two getting together.

The doctor needs to talk to you.

[Krista]: Is my dad out of surgery?

[Blake]: There's been a complication.

Four, three, two, now.

[Plane rattling]

Whoo-whee!

"Whoo-whee?"

Oh, my God, this is fantastic.

Wonderful.

You could hear the fire, feel the heat of the flames.

This is the most exciting thing I have ever done.

It's all fun until a gas t*nk explodes.

Seriously? That could happen?

[Coughing]

Come on, run.

[Coughing thickly]

Go.

We've delivered the supplies to the forest service crew at Ramona Lake.

That's great.

I need you to pick up another load right away.

Fire's spreading South, and they're sending in another crew.

On our way.

Uh, Bobby, Petra and Connor are, uh...

Damn!

I completely forgot.

I was supposed to take Connor flying today.

Can you tell him I'm sorry.

Don't worry.

I'm really good at excuses.

It's been hard on Connor.

Parents splitting up, just needs a guy to talk to.

Are you sure you're that guy?

And why not?

Well, for one thing, he doesn't even know you're his father.

Well, I've been wanting to tell him, but Petra wouldn't like it.

Have you talked to her about it?

Uh, no.

Usually helps.

You think so?

Because there's a couple of things we should talk about.

Bobby, I asked you not to push me.

[Sighs]

Krista! Down there!

Can we land?

Yeah, there's a field over there, but we can't stay down long, the fire's too close.

All right, let's do it.

Go!

[Coughing]

My wife! Anna!

She was right behind us.

The smoke and the fire, I just couldn't find her anymore.

Bobby!

Arctic Air S02 Ep01 - Wildfire

We've got to go help him.

I have to stay here with you.

That's bullshit.

Hurry up, you guys.

We've got to take off as soon as Bobby gets back.

The fire is too close. Is there anybody else?

They all went off with the guide.

We were supposed to go fishing.

Andy didn't want to come.

It's not my fault.

I didn't even want to come on this stupid trip!

Sorry...

That's okay.

Is everybody else all right?

Yeah.

They're on the other side of the lake.

Okay. You've got to hop in.

No, I should go help.

No, come on, you need to hop in.

Watch your head. Get in the plane.

Bobby can take care of himself.

[Fire crackling nearby]

Anna!

Anna!

Here!

Over here!

Anna!

I fell.

I did something to my ankle.

I've got a plane. Hang on.

Don't leave! Please don't leave me here.

I've got to find a way down.

[Fire roaring closer]

[Knock on door]

[Insistent knocking]

Morning!

So I got to like it in the hospital.

So what?

What do you want anyway?

I'm giving you a ride to work.

[Sighs]
I'm not ready yet.

You've been cleared to fly for two weeks.

Yeah, but...

And you keep saying that you're going to come in any day.

Well, this is the day.

They took out my damn spleen.

Mel, you don't need your spleen.

Maybe so, but I kind of miss it.

How are your headaches?

Better since I went back to work.

Kirby!

Kirby!

Don't run away from me.

Hailey!

I was just looking for you.

Where were you last night?

I thought you were coming home right after work.

I know. I was, but I bumped into Randy.

And wound up playing "Assassin's Creed 3" at his house for a while.

You were playing "Assassin's Creed" all night?

Of course not!

We played "Bioshock" also.

And we quit around 3:30.

Why didn't you come home?

Or at least answer your cell phone?

Sorry.

My battery d*ed.

I didn't think you'd worry.

You know I'm a late-night kind of guy.

[Coughing]

You've got to get out now!

Don't we need to take off?

Trust me, you've got to get out. Come on.

Anna. Anna!

Anna...

What are you doing?

Look at this.

If we try and take off through that, the fire's going to rip right through us.

We can't leave the plane.

It's our only way to get out.

What can we do?

We'll have to make our way on foot.

I don't know if I can.

Don't worry, we'll help you out.

This is Arctic Air flight 762.

We're on the ground at 60.95.113.14.

We're heading north on foot.

The fire's not far behind.

Krista, we don't have a long time.

Is anybody reading me?

Anybody?

All right, you take the lead, and I'll bring up the rear.

We've got to keep everybody calm.

Come on, this way.

It's going to be okay.

This way.

There you go.

Here you go.

I thought once we got married, I'd see you more, not less.

Well, I'm only out a few nights a week.

Hey, you got those bearings?

Uh... right, the bearings.

Yeah, um, I'm just getting them now.

Well, it's about bloody time.

I thought maybe you'd retired or something and give you the satisfaction of outlasting me?

Never going to happen.

It's great to have you back.

Yeah, everyone's been missing you.

You're looking good, even better than before.

Yeah, nothing like a plane crash to improve your appearance.

Don't everyone stand around gawking.

Let's get some work done around here.

Yeah, get me those damn bearings.

Is he all right?

I hope so.

Just keep moving.

They're going too slow.

They're doing fine.

Maybe if we used the truck.

There's a truck?

The guide uses it to move gear to the boats.

Where is it?

It's back at the camp.

It's just over there.

But it's no use, the guide has the keys.

Well, is it old?

Very old.

Well, that's perfect.

Astrid's tied up on a helicopter run, so...

Where the hell is all my stuff!

And somebody get these plants out of my office!

It's not a damn greenhouse.

I guess he's okay.

Okay, you might want to hurry it up.

It's getting kind of warm out here.

It's not as easy as it looks.

You could do it in less than five minutes back in high school.

That was a long time ago.

And it's not like I've been practicing.

[Distant expl*si*n]

What the hell?

What's that?

That was our plane.

Mel's seriously going to be pissed about that plane.

Not nearly as pissed as I'm going to be if you don't hurry up.

Come on.

Got it!
[Engine starts]

Okay, come on, everybody in the truck.

Come on, let's go!

Women!
[Laughing ruefully]

You know, you do them a favour, and they act like you've insulted them.

Their brains are wired backwards.

Not backwards, just different.

Better, actually.

Kirby, this here is Alex.

She is our new mechanic.

From Australia?

New Zealand.

Oh, sorry about that.

That's okay, I'm not afraid of a little grease.

[Scoffs] Wouldn't know it to look at you.

A washing machine.

You'd be amazed what they can do.

So you were saying you know helicopters?

Uh, no, what I was saying is that if it has an engine, and it flies, I can fix it.

So, I don't need to tell you how to do rotor smoothing?

Okay, we can go over that later.

Um, I'll go get the test computer, you disconnect everything from the swashplate, and we'll do a pull test when I get back.

The swashplate?

Well, you heard her, disconnect the... from the swashplate.

And give me my friggin' bearings.

I should have gone with you to find Anna.

I just...

Don't worry about it.

Everything worked itself out.

I wish Andy felt that way.

Yeah, kids can be tough.

He's got reason.

His mother d*ed two months ago.

We split up when he was just a baby.

His mom came back here.

I almost never saw him after that.

He's moving back to Germany with you?

Only because he doesn't have anywhere else to go.

I think he hates me.

I thought this trip would help.

Spend a little time in his own country before we go back.

Hasn't gone quite the way I planned.

It's never too late with a kid.

You think so?

Yeah, I have to. I've got one of my own.

Can you see the road on the map?

Uh, no, it's too small, but we're heading this way.

Toward that other lake?

Yeah, and there's definitely a road there.

So we get there, we're good.

So tell me a little bit about Hailey.

Does she like to cook?

I think so.

You think so?

Sometimes, she cooks.

Uh, but I'm not always home at dinner time.

Well, you see, there's your problem right there.

Pot.

P-pot?

Yeah, a pot. Get her a new pot.

Oh.

Copper bottom, stainless steel.

Marie loves to get a new bit of cookware.

I'm not sure...

A nice mixer would go over well, too.

I don't think that cooking stuff is going to do it.

Chocolates?

Doesn't like sweets.

Well, I can see why you're having difficulty, hmm?

Of course a new stacking washer-dryer would do the trick, but that's a little pricey.

What if I took her out to dinner?

And what's the point of that?

It's romantic.

Bah.

No, no, you take her out to dinner, you eat for one night.

You buy her a new pot, and you are eating for years, and you can trust me on that one, buddy.

So, I was thinking about what you said.

And..?

And I...

Think maybe we should...

Go out.

Like we used to.

Like on a date.

It's been a long time.

I'd love that.

Okay, um, dinner. Tonight.

Frontier Hotel.

Remember?

It was our first real date.

First time we did it.

[Laughing] Kirby!

I am so happy to be flying with you today.

I am learning a great deal.

I am so happy you didn't leave Arctic Air after you broke off...

Go ahead, say it.

After I broke off my engagement with Krista?

Well, yes, I-I thought it might be painful...

It's not painful.

She can do whatever she wants.

See whoever she wants, she can kiss whoever she wants.

She can do anybody that she wants.

I don't give a damn.

Of course.

I just thought it might be a bit awkward...

Screw awkward.

Shontal and I are the only ones who can fly the helicopter.

Where else could I build up hours like that?

When I leave here, I am going to a top job.

I'm sure as hell not going to walk away just because it makes her uncomfortable to have me around.

She'll just have to get used to it.

[Tires spinning]

Again!

[Tires spinning]

It's not going to move.

How much farther to the lake?

Not far.

And we've got a lead on the fire.

What are you doing?

Looking for the accounts.

I need to see how bad things got while I was gone.

Things were good.

Bobby and Krista did a really good job running this place.

I'll be the judge of that, if I can ever find the damn books.

Here you go.

Last three months.

If things are so great, why is everybody hiding everything from me?

It's called filing.

Krista kind of liked it.

[Timid knock]

Hey.

I wanted to say I'm glad you're back.

Thanks.

Sorry I didn't get to see you in the hospital.

Oh, I get it.

Hospitals suck, and I wasn't my usual sweet self while I was in there.

I was embarrassed. I didn't fly the rescue mission.

I just didn't think I could land that DC-3 on skis.

You're a pilot. You made an informed decision.

Nothing wrong with that.

Bobby did it.

I'm twice the pilot he'll ever be.

I'd say three times.

That's the point.

He's too dumb to know he couldn't do it.

You did the right thing.

Don't you have a helicopter run to make?

Then get to it. Make us some money.

Probes down.

Down!

[Plane rattling]

Whoo-wee!

I can't help it.

This is truly a magnificent job.

[Loreen, over radio]: Blake, you there?

This is Blake. Go ahead.

I need you to look for Bobby and Krista.

They're overdue.

They were headed back to the depot after dropping supplies to the crew at Ramona Lake.

That would put them just east of me.

I'll take a look.

Copy.

Karl didn't leave me.

Back there.

It was insane, we were totally lost, smoke was everywhere.

He's a good man.
[Airplane drones overhead]

[All shouting and yelling]

Hello! Hello!

Got 'em.

Looks like they're headed for the lake.

But the fire is going to get there first.

Yeah. They can't see that from the ground.

We have to do something.

If they don't turn back, they'll be k*lled.

Bobby, you are going the wrong way!

You have to turn around! The fire is in front of you!

Any idea what they're trying to do?

None.

Unless Dev's fighting off a swarm of bees.

Okay, well, let's head to the lake.

They can send a float plane.

Now they're going the wrong way.

I thought my signal was very clear.

They can hardly see you.

We have to do something. They're going to be k*lled.

What are you doing?

I have an idea.

Careful.

[Plane drones overhead]

[Soft thud]

Andy!

Okay, wait, wait.

We'll stay back.

We need to give your ankle a rest.

Life jackets?

What the hell are we supposed to do with life jackets?

The mystery prize is...

[Turns on radio]

Blake, Dev.

Can you hear me?

Loud and clear.

Okay, you are heading in the wrong direction.

The fire is in front of you.

Where should we go?

Southeast.

It is the only safe direction.

If the wind doesn't change, you should be well away from the fire.

Thanks, Dev.

So, which way is southeast?

I don't know, but I've got a secret w*apon.

Dev says we need to go southeast.

This way.

Secret w*apon.

There's a small landing strip at an abandoned mine about four miles north of their current position.

Any chance they can get there?

No chance.

They'd have to go straight through the fire.

There's nothing else out there.

Are you sure they can't get to the lake?

Positive.

You said they're headed southeast.

Yes.

There's an old dry-bed southeast of them.

A plane can't land there.

But a helicopter can, and Shontal's headed in that direction.

How far do they have to walk?

Three miles maybe.

I'll let them know.

Navajo's ready to go.

You're going out there, right?

Another pair of eyes might help.

Yeah.

On my way.

It's great you two have been together for so long.

What do you mean?

Oh, I assumed you were a couple, the way you are together.

It's not like that.

Well, not yet anyway.

But you hope?

Yeah.

But she knows that I don't have a great track record with women.

Well, that is true for me as well.

All you can do is try, right?

Yeah.

[Dev, over radio]: Bobby!

Dev, what's going on?

It is not looking good.

The wind has shifted, and the fire is coming your way, and it is coming very quickly.

We've got to move faster!

[Astrid]: Totally different than flying a plane...

It's a little tricky.

Want to give it a try?

[Chuckles]

I'll watch.

[Loreen, over radio]: Shontal?

Astrid here.

You need to divert.

We've got an emergency.

Bobby and Krista are on the ground,
and they're in the fire's path.

They need to be picked up.

Copy that.

Can I have the coordinates?

You can walk him through that?

Thanks.

Mel?

I decided I'd be more useful here.

Door's closed.

Not anymore.

You okay?

Of course I'm okay.

My fault.

I was wrong to think you'd want to jump into a cockpit so soon.

Got nothing to do with it.

Okay.

I've had crashes before.

I know.

It's just that...

What?

No one's ever d*ed before.

[Coughing]

This really sucks.

It's not the best fishing trip you've ever been on?

It's the only fishing trip I've ever been on.

Should never have gone anywhere with that dumbass.

Hey, come on, don't talk about your dad that way.

He's a loser.

He's never there when anyone needs him.

He wasn't even there for stupid Anna when she was in trouble.

He's helping her now.

Yeah, because it's safe.

[Radio crackles]

Bobby...

[Dev's voice crackling with static]

The fire is moving...

Hey, Dev, you're breaking up.

Bobby!

I-I said the wind is growing stronger!

[Voice crackling]

Dev!

And the fire is moving faster!

You have to hurry!

The heat's messing up the radios.

How can it move so fast?

It's in the crown.

It's jumping from the top of one tree to another.

You have to move faster! It's catching up to you!

Bobby!

[Static crackling]

Bobby...

Come on.

Let's go!

Come on, guys.

That clearing should be right around here.

There's too much smoke.

I can't see anything.

Neither can I.

We have to come around again.

The clearing should be close!

[Coughing thickly]

[Tree creaking]

Watch out!

Andy!

Bobby!

Go on, get to the helicopter!

I'm not leaving you!

We'll find another way around!

We'll wait here.

No, it's not safe. Get Andy out.

Please, Anna!

Go now! We'll be all right.

We have to go.

No, we can't just leave them.

It'll be okay.

Bobby will find a way.

Come on.

Is it possible to land like this?

You can hit the ground.

It's just...

How hard is the question.

Guys, hurry!

Let's go!

No!

We have to wait!

[Coughing]

[Flames whooshing]

This way.

Too much smoke.

It can't be much farther.

Krista, we have to get in.

What are you people doing?

We got to go!

Get in!

We can't just leave my dad!

Bobby is still out there.

It's bone dry, Krista.

The fire hits this, and we're done.

How does that help anybody?

I'll wait two minutes.

If Bobby's not here, we're gone.

[Fires crackling]

Just go.

I'll catch up.

[Coughing]

[Branches creak and fall]

Come on.

Just a little farther.

Karl?

Karl?

Krista, we gotta go.

Karl!

[Gasping for air]

You've got to get up.

Got to get up.

I'm sorry. I can't make it.

Think about your son.

Yeah. Yeah...

[Coughing heavily]

[Shouting and calling]

Hey!

[Coughing]

Four, three, two, drop it.

We've slowed the fire somewhat, but we should have dropped it closer to them.

Dangerous to drop too close.

We bought them a little time with this, but we've got to get more water.

But that will take too long.

Nothing else we can do.

All right, everybody out.

There's a plane coming to pick you up in a few minutes.

You too.

Wait, aren't we going back?

I could barely get this thing down the first time.

The fire's going to be worse now.

It's too dangerous.

But maybe they made it out.

Maybe we could find them.

Dammit, Shontal, we have to try!

Go.

I'm sorry I slowed you down.

It's not your fault.

I'm sorry I didn't go with you to help Anna.

I just didn't want to leave Andy alone.

I thought if anything happened to me, he might be all alone in the world.

Looks like that's going to happen anyway.

We'll get out of this.

I admire the optimism.

But we are very low on options.

[Fire crackling around them]

[Distant engine overhead]

[Mouthing silently]

You think you can get us out of here?

Damned if I know.

Could be worse, though.

We could have people sh**ting at us.

Bobby?

Karl!

[Crying in relief]

Goddamit, Martin.

You had me kind of scared.

Had me a little scared, too.

Thank you, Shontal.

No big deal.

Wow, that was amazing flying.

Especially in that impossible machine.

Hey, give your dad a break.

He was a big help back there.

Wouldn't have made it without him.

Are you okay, dad?

I'm very good.

Very good.

Think he came back too soon?

[Chuckles]

Are you out of your freaking mind?

He should have been back a month ago.

No, you weren't on that plane.

I can't get it out of my head.

Be with me till the day I die.

What if he can't fly again?

Nah...

Could happen.

No way in hell.

You don't even think that.

Why not?

People quit their jobs.

My dad?

He worked the coal mines in Springhill, Nova Scotia.

4,000 feet down, 10 hours a day, he still had a smile for us little buggers when he came home.

In '58, the mine caved in.

They shut 'er all down.

He couldn't find work anywhere underground.

He was dead within a year.

Now, flying is not what Mel does, it's who he is.

Can't ever lose that.

There they are.

The two geniuses who b*rned up my plane.

Dad...

Glad to see you back in the office again, Mel.

Yeah, well, glad you didn't get fried.

But don't expect me to get all Dewey-eyed over it.

And get those damn plants out of my office by morning.

Well, he's mellowed out a bit.

[Chuckles]

Blake...

Thanks for saving our asses out there.

Hey, I'm glad you got out all right.

We should go out for a drink, just you and me.

Talk it out.

Nothing to talk about.

And I've got other plans.

Hey.

Hey.

You ready?

Yeah, let's go.

Hey, guys.

Hi.

When did that start?

How the hell should I know?

She's only been here two days.

[Scoffs] Two days?

You okay?

[Irritable]
Yeah, of course...

[More gently] Yeah, of course, I'm okay.

[Sighs]

Of course you are.

[Chucks]
I'm just tired.

I'll take you home.

I'd really like that.

Hi, Cece.

Where's Kirby?

We've got a date.

Uh... he left a little while ago.

He left?

He's not ditching me tonight, is he?

No...

No, no...

A buddy of his car broke down, and Kirby went to help him.

I guess it was an emergency.

That's an emergency?

But he asked me to tell you that, uh, he'll take you out tomorrow night.

Don't lie for him Cece.

He's not worth it.

Hailey...

You know, marriage, there's give and... take.

I'm sick of giving, Cece.

I'm sick of him.

Well, he might be around more if...

You cooked him a nice supper every night.

[Groans in exasperation]

Works for Marie.

[Krista sighs]

You were great out there today.

You too.

Well, we really make a pretty good team.

No, we make a great team.

[Chuckles]

Any regrets?

With Blake and...

No.

I thought I'd lost you today.

I didn't think I could take it.

I don't want to lose you, ever.

Not going to happen.

I already made a big mistake, and I don't want to make another one.

You're my best friend.

Krista, I... Just...

Let's just not spoil a good thing.

Good night.
