Previously on The Americans...

Directorate S undercover agents supposedly hiding all over the US.

Super-secret identities--

No one has any idea who they are.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Sandra: Oh, hi. You came!

Just for a second, to, uh, bring over brownies and welcome you to the neighborhood.

What do you do, Stan?

I'm an FBI agent.

Swedish intelligence needs you.

And I would like you to talk to this man.

Annelise: He's handsome.

And powerful.

You're violating a shitload of Soviet laws, and you're looking at 10 years in a Siberian labor camp.

You're gonna have to start working for me.

Oleg: No one else knows that you're running her.

Not yet.

What can you give me in exchange for Nina's safety?

What the hell is going on here?

When you deliver the Echo program to me, I will let Nina Sergeevna go free.

Last year, The Centre started a program to develop officers they're calling second-generation illegals.

The Centre-- they want Paige to be next.

If our organization ever gets anywhere near our daughter without our permission, my wife and I are finished.

Elizabeth: She's looking for something in her life.

What if this is it?

It would destroy her.

[ Speaking indistinctly ]

No!

It's okay.

It's gonna be okay.

[ Water splashing ]

No. No!

Aah!

[ Exhales sharply ]

You have a daughter?

No.

[ Indistinct conversations ]

Mine's 19.

Sophomore in college.

Three days ago, she calls me, says she's decided to major in political science.

Wants to be in the CIA like her mother.

[ Both chuckle ]

I went in an operation once...

[ Smacks lips ]

That's once in 23 years.

And they gave us all the training, but anyway, there was this, uh, case officer in Nairobi.

Real hotshot. Jeff.

Yeah.

Didn't understand anything.

His reports made no sense when I got there.

[ Laughing ] Li-- No sense.

They were fantastic by the time I got done with them.

Anyway, he's out one night with an agent, and they get an emergency signal.

All the other COs are busy, so they send me.

I go.

I get more out of the asset in one night than he's gotten in six months because I knew what I was talking about.

So, I write up the report. It gets circulated everywhere.

Top grades.

The COS says nothing to me.

Not one word.

A week later...

Jeff gets promoted.

[ Slurps ]

[ Indistinct conversations continue ]

Screw the CIA.

That's everyone in NE and SAD working on Afghanistan.

I gotta take a leak.

[ Indistinct conversations continue ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Coin clinks, telephone dings ]

[ Sighs shakily ]

[ Inhales deeply ] It's me.

I'm doing something terrible.

I can tell you what's wrong with you.

It's simple.

You assholes haven't had a single real experience your entire lives.

You're living in the realm of non-experience, which is why your lives don't work.

Nicholas.

What is the realm of non-experience?

Ho-- h-how could there be non-experience?

[ Audience murmurs ]

Let's say you're balling a woman.

Okay.

You're banging her good, and you want her to have an orgasm, right?

[ Laughter ]

Sure.

When you're thinking about her orgasm, are you experiencing?

Um...

I guess not.

[ Snaps fingers ] That's non-experience.

And sex is one of the few things we have--

Almost getting k*lled is another-- that can jolt us into feeling fully alive.

If you want to actually experience life, then you've got to stop being so reasonable all the time, you've got to stop hoping things are just gonna get better, and you've got to accept what you've got.

[ Chuckles ] So that's how she chose Emory.

And she loves it.

She sounds terrific.

Mm.

[ Glass thuds ]

Listen, uh...

Oh, no, no, no, no, no.

Have another drink. Or dinner.

You know, they actually make really good food here, believe it or not. [ Chuckles ]

Next time.

Oh, can't you stay?

I'm-- I'm actually, uh-- With all this...

Just lonely tonight.

I mean, come on. We're having such a good time.

Oh, I wish I could, Charlotte.

We'll see each other again next week.

We can have dinner then.

[ Vehicle approaches ]

[ Tires screech ]

Shoulder-length blond hair, wire-rim glasses.

What was she wearing?

Black slacks, blue-gray blouse, a bright red jacket.

Did you see her interacting with anyone else?

Suspect's wearing a bright red jacket.

Well, thanks.

You bet.

It's not a very good plan, though.

I mean, what am I gonna tell her?

"It's the stupidest thing I ever heard in my life"?

[ Laughs ]

Yeah, that's-- that's a problem.

According to these idiots, I probably should say that.

Honest.

"Hey, sweetie, I went to EST, and I think they're all insane.

Can we get back together now?"

[ Slaps knee ]

Grevey's?

Yeah.

Let's go get a non-beer.

[ Engine shuts off, car doors open, close ]

Uh, pardon me. Ma'am?

Ma'am?

Excuse me. Ma'am?

Can I help you?

Yes. We're with the FBI--

[ Both grunting ]

[ Tires screech ]

[ Metal scrapes ]

[ Panting ]

[ Grunts ] Ohh.

[ Siren wails ]

[ Speaking in Pashto ]

[ Speaking continues ]

[ Speaking stops ]

[ Clears throat ]

Oleg Igorevich.

[ Glass thuds ]

[ Water swishing ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Door opens ]

[ Water running ]

Stan: Yeah, that was complete luck, though.

Hey, honey.

Oh, hey, Elizabeth.

We thought you'd be sleeping.

Elizabeth: No. What happened?

[ Scoffs ] Would you believe unloading groceries?

Well, you got to let your man do the heavy lifting.

Hear that, honey?

Stan thinks you should do all the grocery shopping.

[ Refrigerator opens ]

Oh!

You guys hungry?

[ Objects clattering ]

What do you got?

You know what?

I'm-- I'm pretty zonked.

Maybe we should call it a night.

Oh. I can take a hint.

That wasn't really a hint.

[ Chuckles ]

Why don't you come for dinner tomorrow?

Yeah.

Oh, great.

I'll see you guys then.

Great.

All right.

Feel better.

Thank you.

See you tomorrow.

Philip: - Night.

Good night.

[ Door closes ]

What happened?

Close call.

How close?

Very.

[ Inhales sharply ]

I had a list of names in my pocket.

We'll get in.

[ Sighs ]

[ Bag thuds ]

[ Telephones ringing ]

Sir.

Aderholt said she was about 5'3", 5'4"?

Don't rub it in.

Well, they make them tough over there.

Could be the same illegal we were going after before.

Could be.

Have a seat, Stan.

We got intelligence from the CIA this morning.

They convicted Nina Krilova.

Espionage and treason.

So that's that.

Yep.

Well, you told me it goes that way.

Doesn't make it easier.

[ Knock on door ]

Come in.

Sir.

It's okay. Go ahead.

We were testing for prints on the list of names, but the CIA took custody of it before we got anywhere.

They won't even tell us who the names are.

The sketch is ready?

Yeah, they're cleaning them up now.

They need you to sign this.

[ Sighs ]

Thanks.

I put out a lead to the entire field on dentists, emergency rooms, doctors, so if anyone remotely matching this woman's description goes in for an injury to the face or the jaw, we'll get an alert.

Hey.

[ Knock on door ]

Well...

Hello.

Gabriel.

[ Both chuckle ]

Oh, look at you.

Still gorgeous.

[ Chuckles ]

And you look about the same.

Welcome back.

Look what I have for you.

What?

You're gonna love this.

What is it?

It's Swedish.

[ Chuckles ]

Well...

I made your favorite.

Philip: Oh.

Ready?

Yes.

One more thing we've missed.

How are the kids?

Elizabeth: - Good.

Henry's hockey any better?

Oh, you know, he's focusing more on baseball these days.

Got any pictures?

Yes.

Here she is.

Oh. [ Clicks tongue ]

Oh, she's beautiful.

Mm-hmm.

Any boyfriends yet?

Not yet.

Hmm.

So... It's been harder without you.

Yeah.

Well, I heard.

Okay. Let's eat.

Everyone's worried about the w*r.

Kids are coming home every day in caskets.

I'm sorry that I lost that list.

Maybe I should've--

We'll get the names another way.

You, we could never get back.

Philip: Are you briefed on Yousaf Rana?

Yes, you got him promoted to head of covert action at the ISI.

He's smart, but he's a bureaucrat.

He's not a field guy.

I could have my agent push a little harder, see if we get more out of him.

But if not, we could take photographs.

I know we don't want to rush things, but we don't have a couple of years to let things unfold in their natural course.

Reagan wants to turn Afghanistan into our Vietnam, and if that happens...

About Paige...

The Centre takes very seriously what you said to them about staying away from her.

Good.

Gabriel: But if that's the plan, they also want to know, this isn't just, uh, sitting still, is it?

I'm sorry. I know this is very difficult.

Do they not understand that she is 14 years old?

Of course they do.

But their position-- and they have a point-- is that now is the time to start laying the groundwork.

I don't think I can just go back to them and say nothing.

No, you're right. I mean, it has been really hard.

And you can tell The Centre that it's something that's been on our minds, and we're doing what we need to be doing.

All right.

In terms of update, she's involved in a church group, very liberal.

They're active in the antinuclear movement, the South American liberation.

They're talking about apartheid.

A few months ago, I started going with her.

I'd say we were closer than we ever have been.

Good.

Ideologically, she's open to the right ideas.

We're getting her ready to find out who we really are, who she really is, and that's gonna break everything open, change everything.

But it's gonna take time.

I'll let them know.

So... why don't you be a good American wife and do the dishes?

Elizabeth?

There's something for you in the drawer under the toaster.

Philip, why don't we play?

What?

So, it's all been bullshit, everything you said to me.

I don't know what you're talking about.

All this time, going to church, saying you're getting closer to her.

I am going to church with her. I am getting closer to her.

That is not what you just said to him.

I told him what he needed to hear, what The Centre needs to hear.

Yes, and that is exactly what you want.

[ Sighs ]

Elizabeth, we are so close now. We are so close.

Couple of years, she goes to college, she's an adult.

She can have her own life, and we owe her that.

Don't you get it?

I get it.

I get everything.

[ Sighs ] You're assessing her.

You're developing her.

I don't know what you're talking about.

She's my daughter.

You see?

Reload.

No matter how much practice, I can't seem to make any progress.

Mm.

Let me check the sights.

I don't know, Martha.

Since when do you wear glasses?

Oh, uh, just for distance.

Take them off.

You want to line up these two sights with each other.

Mm-hmm.

That's where you're looking.

Okay, remember, the target is just fuzzy in the background.

It's all about the sights. Okay?

He's got this kind of quiet strength.

I'm glad you like him, but you do have to be careful.

You're jealous.

[ Scoffs ]

U-uh, yeah. A little.

Okay, yeah, maybe a-a lot, but it's still true.

You have to be objective to do the job.

The ISI won't let the CIA officers in Peshawar anywhere near the Mujahideen command, even though it's their money and their weapons.

They all have to be passed through the ISI.

Why?

The ISI guys don't trust them.

They don't like them.

So basically, they've got them by the balls.

That's what Yousaf says, anyway.

And then the ISI is all messed up.

You've got your religious guys and your nonreligious guys like Yousaf, but his bodyguards pray like 10 times a day.

This is great, Annelise.

When does he come back?

The next time he has a big meeting with the CIA or the next time I tell him my husband's going out of town.

Tell him your husband is going out of town, because we need you to find out as much as you can about the people he's working with in the CIA's Afghan group.
