02x15 - Spellcaster

Man: Lot 43A... a silver jewelry box.

A gift from Philip II to Queen Elizabeth I.

Do we categorize this as jewelry or mementos?

Mementos. Should do well in this auction.

Oh!

The journal of John Dee.

John Dee?

Yes, Queen Elizabeth's most trusted adviser.

And if you believe the legend, the Royal Court's sorcerer supreme.

(laughs) Right.

Scholars have been searching for this for centuries.

Only recently unearthed this in London.

(cell phone ringing) Oh.

Best keep this secure, hmm?

Yes.

(in distance): Uh-huh...

(electrical crackling)

(footsteps approaching)

Who are you?

You can't be in here.

Listen, you can't be in here!

Guard: Hey! Hey! Can't you hear?

She said you can't be...

I need you to turn around slowly...

Turn around and put your hands up!

Now! I'm talking to you!

Turn around and put your hands in the air!

That's it.

(mysterious man whispers eerily)

Put your hands in the air.

(whispering eerily)

Drop it and get on the ground now!

(whispering eerily)

(gasps)

(whispering in Latin)

(both grunting)

(sizzling)

Just like a candle.

Crane?

Lieutenant, thank you for joining me.

Next time, a little context when you text me to meet at a strange address. What are we doing here?

Exploring.

A "three bedroom, two bath Craftsman."

Or so I've managed to decipher from this posting.

House hunting?

You bring me house hunting?

Well, less of a hunt, more a scouting expedition.

Well, hello!

I'm Keely.

Please, look around.

You'll notice all the charming details throughout.

Now, I know the bedrooms are a tad cozy.

"Cozy" is code for too small to live in.

And the backyard is a bit rustic.

"Rustic" means you'll need a landscaper.

How are the bathrooms?

They're in their original condition.

Older than me. (quiet laugh)

Excuse me.

Yeah, well, you figured out the real code.

Lieutenant...

(squeaking)

Hmm?

(sighs)

One cannot even buy a home without being bombarded with modern-day hucksterism.

We call it marketing. People even get degrees for it.

True fact... people leave with a more positive impression if you give them...

(singsongy): Mini muffins! (chuckles)

Oh. Thank you.

You're welcome.

Marketing.

Are you seriously considering buying a house?

'Cause if you are, there are bigger issues than decoding Realtor-speak.

You need a credit rating, bank approval, and...

Not to mention an actual income.

Call this an exercise in optimism.

Generous though you've been in allowing me Sheriff Corbin's cabin, sooner or later, I must find a place of my own.

Preferably with granite countertops.

That's gonna have to be later.

There was a robbery at an auction house in White Plains last night, two people were k*lled.

Preliminary reports suggest that the blood... boiled inside their body.

Boiled?

The M.E.'s are stumped.

Security cam didn't pick up a clear image of the k*ller.

Was this book stolen?

Yeah.

It belonged to John Dee, an Elizabethan-era academic...

And famed student of the occult.

He spent years compiling spells into books.

This is known as the Grand Grimoire, the volume of forbidden black magic.

So Dee was on the dark side of the magical train tracks?

No, he was a scholar.

He wanted to understand the power of the dark forces and keep it hidden away.

The Grand Grimoire has been much sought after in magic circles.

But I'm afraid I'm no expert on the subject.

Where is our specialist in that department?

200 years in purgatory have dearly sapped my skills, but I'm gradually growing stronger.

And now, as we enter a time of perigean tide, my powers are peaking.

That's handy.

Magic is an innate talent, but it must be honed through practice.

Yeah, well, I'm hoping that we can count on that talent to help us now.

The Grand Grimoire?

This is a powerful and dangerous spell book.

It was stolen from a local auction house last night.

Here? After all this time?

Someone must have drawn it to this place, perhaps through a summoning spell.

A magical someone?

Crane: Or... another tormented soul released from purgatory after Moloch's death.

The consequences of Moloch's evil may never cease.

I know you still mourn our son.

I just hope his actions have brought him some peace.

(knocking on door)

Yes?

Mr. Parish.

I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you.

You said you had a problem?

The hot water is out.

(TV plays indistinctly)

(groaning): Ah... damn.

So it is.

I'll send Ronnie up right away.

He's my son.

If you'd like, I can also send a cleaning lady.

That won't be necessary.

It's no trouble.

Look, I don't get a lot of long-term guests, and, frankly, not ones that pay up front and in cash.

All I need is my privacy.

Tv reporter: Sources close to the case say they're stumped by the bizarre nature of the deaths at the auction house, which involved "unusual blood activity."

Woman: I was watching this earlier... so weird.

Ever seen anything like it?

...part of an auction of items from Queen Elizabeth I's...

Yes, I have.

And if I could forget all about it, I would.

Well, we all have things we're trying to get past.

I mean... we're only human, right?

Abbie: Forensics came back.

They identified blood at the scene.

Didn't belong to the victims.

No match but it was laced with an alkaloid, a compound commonly found in a plant, Datura stramonium.

Also known...

Jimsonweed.

Witches call it moonflower.

Before performing dangerous spells, certain practitioners ingest it to augment their power.

It's like doping in the magic world.

Steroids. It's a substance athletes use to make their bodies unnaturally strong.

Well, this sorcerer uses blood magic.

Witches draw their magic from different sources.

Katrina's power flows from nature.

Others from fire, from the moon and the stars.

Blood magic is one of the dark arts, a destructive form of sorcery that taps into base, evil forces.

(sniffs, exhales)

(inhales, exhales deeply)

(computer beeps)

Ah.

Here's the security cam footage from the auction house.

I thought it proved inconclusive.

Huh, some kind of electrical surge wiped out most of it, but a few frames survived.

Called in a favor from a friend at Quantico.

They're experimenting with a new image enhancement algorithm.

It isolates pixels off reflective surfaces in the environment.

That make sense?

Oh, yes, entirely.

Uh... well, maybe save one detail.

Pixels?

Oh, pixels.

Mm-hmm.

Pixels. Thank you.

(footsteps approaching)

Any luck with the research?

Not yet.

But these books contain much about the Grimoire.

Ah. Magic.

(gasps)

Katrina?

Do you recognize him?

His name is Solomon Kent.

He's the warlock all witches fear.

Moloch's death must have freed him from purgatory, and now he is in our world.

(whispering in Latin)

And wherever Solomon Kent goes, terror and death are sure to follow.

Solomon Kent. Solomon Kent! Here.

Born 1661. Was a Puritan minister and leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Salem.

He was one of the leaders of the town of Salem.

Salem, as in the Salem witch trials?

His family came to Massachusetts during the Great Puritan Migration.

He grew up a spiritual man, a pillar of the community, beloved by all.

Times were hard back then, but the town was close-knit.

Everyone pulled together, no matter their background.

Why, thank you, Mrs. Parsons. I don't know the next time we'll have fresh bread, especially if this drought lingers.

As Providence decrees.

Peace be upon you.

And upon you.

Will I be seeing you at the prayer group tonight, Reverend?

Prayer group?

Ah, yes.

(quietly): This drought must end.

Until then, Mrs. Van Tassel.

Abbie: Van Tassel.

The year 1692.

So this woman's your grandmother.

Helena Van Tassel.

She was among the first of the Dutch to come to the New World.

She settled in Salem because it was a home to a very strong coven, one led by Kent.

My mother was only a young girl at the time, but she never forgot what happened in Salem.

And she made sure I would never forget, either.

The Puritans believed magic was all around them.

Even those such as Kent's coven who sought to do good with it, they still had to hide their identities.

People distrust that which they do not understand.

So what happened?

Kent lost his way.

He became infatuated with a young woman named Sarah Osborne.

(gasps)

A worker is only as good as their tools.

This blade is far too dull for work or safety.

(whispering a spell)

It's not so bad.

I thought it was much worse.

Thank you.

Katrina: He thought his feelings were being reciprocated, but he was wrong.

Sarah.

Reverend.

My grandmother knew this could end in heartbreak...

...but she did not know it would end in tragedy.

Reverend.

You sent for me.

A worker is only as good as their tools.

For you.

(quiet laugh)

Thank you.

Reverend...

Do not be frightened.

I know what's in your heart.

The same as what's in mine.

Sarah.

No!

(groans, gasps)

Sarah...

Katrina: It was a terrible accident.

Man (in distance): Was that a scream?

Katrina: But Kent knew how it would look.

(villagers clamoring outside)

In his fear and panic,

Kent chose a desperate way out.

We heard screaming.

(gasps) She att*cked me.

But I fought her back!

The Devil is upon us!

We are beset by his servants.

(women gasping, screaming)

There are witches among us!

Katrina: My grandmother tried to appeal to the good in Kent.

To the man she thought she know.

Helena, it was an accident.

Your lie has spread like the plague.

You must end this madness.

They will have my head.

Throw yourself at their mercy.

Trust in their kindness.

Do not force me to make this decision for you.

Katrina: But Kent was too fearful for trust.

So he turned on Helena...

Gelidum sis!

Katrina: ...and was forever turned himself.

Kent: Behold, another witch.

Witness her unholy gaze. (gasps)

Let this enemy have no power over us.

Seize her! Do not allow her to speak.

This is but the beginning of a w*r.

Katrina: The sentences were swift and cruel.

(necks snapping)

The rest of Helena's family... including my mother... fled Salem that night, never to return.

So Solomon Kent is responsible for the Salem witch trials.

A period of mass paranoia and persecution.

It still haunts us.

Every kid in America reads The Crucible... a play about Salem... but it's really about the mass hysteria over Communism in the 1950s.

"Let us not be driven by fear into an age of unreason. Remember... we are not descended from fearful men."

Jefferson?

Edward R. Murrow.

He was a journalist in the 1950s who spoke out against these modern witch trials.

You been catching up on your country's history?

It is heartening to discover men like Mr. Murrow.

Would have made the Founding Fathers proud.

Well, let's make them proud by locating this Grimoire.

If I can access its last location, I may be able to track its mystical signature.

How was Kent able to survive the witch trials unscathed?

He survived, but not unscathed.

Katrina: The dark forces he cultivated allowed him to fend off the retribution for a while, but eventually the coven's surviving members combined their powers and hunted him down.

They exiled him to purgatory.

(screams)

(scream echoes, fades)

Entering our world, Kent must have cast a spell to draw the Grimoire to him.

The question is why?

I take it you can't locate the Grimoire.

No, but I sensed something else.

It's not whole.

John Dee bound the book with a spell so that no one could access any part of it unless the book was whole, to make sure the magic within it could not spread widely.

But whoever handled the book must have split up the pages.

Will it work without the missing pages?

No.

Then he cannot access its power yet.

We need to find the second half of that book before Kent.

Hey, Ramirez, I need you to check something for me.

The auction house had a delayed shipment due to bad weather, slowing one of its cargo ships.

I need an ETA for the new delivery date. Thanks.

Captain Irving.

Losing your edge, Mills.

I've been tailing you for 50 yards.

Next time try calling.

A little advance warning goes a long way, considering your situation.

I wasn't trying to sneak up on you. It's just... after we left it at the precinct, I wasn't sure you'd take my call.

What do you want?

I'll be straight with you.

I was pretty pissed... when you didn't trust me.

After all I've done.

Your soul was stolen by a Horseman of the Apocalypse.

Just kind of hard to tell which side of the line you're on now.

That's why I went to Katrina.

She's proven my soul is clean.

And the truth is, I don't even blame you for not trusting me.

Cynthia and I decided... we need a fresh start... put the past behind us. No grudges.

So as far as I'm concerned, you and me, we're good.

Just wanted you to know that.

Frank...

It was 25 yards.

You were tucked behind the buttress.

A bear in heat would have made less noise.

So I wasn't sneaking up on you.

Good to see you, Mills.

Hello?

Oh, hey.

Um, Ronnie... my mom sent me to fix the faucet.

Ah, hey... a little hobby of mine.

Yeah, I see you build models, too.

Uh, your detail work is great.

You use an, uh, 11 blade?

Just my pocket Kn*fe.

Oh. You got to show me how you did those edges.

If you need any wood, I got plenty downstairs.

I'm building some ramps for my mom.

Your mother... what happened to her?

Got clipped by a drunk driver a few years ago.

It was a tough break, but she never complained, not once.

Seems like a strong woman.

Oh, she is.

Who needs a dad, right?

Indeed. Fathers are never what they're cracked up to be.

No, keep it. Plenty where those came from.
Abbie: The auction house's shipment was diverted to a regional air freight company. It's arriving at the Westchester distribution hub tonight.

We must be there to intercept it.

Yeah.

Right.

Lieutenant... is there something else?

I ran into Irving. More like he ran into me.

What did he want?

To tell me that he doesn't blame us for being suspicious.

Just wanted to say that he's moving on.

Letting go of the past can be difficult.

Crane?

Letting go of the past.

Kent has had 400 years to think on his mistakes.

On everything that he's lost.

What if he cannot let go?

There is a spell in the Grand Grimoire.

A resurrection spell.

Resurrection... Sarah Osborne.

(screams)

Sarah!

What if he's trying to bring Sarah Osborne back from the dead?

I've been reading up on this since Irving came back.

One thing's for sure... once the gates of the afterlife have opened, they're not easily shut.

If Kent opens these gates, Sarah Obsborne's soul will not be the only one to enter this realm.

The world of the living will be overwhelmed by the dead.

We need to get to that warehouse.

Abbie: So... Katrina's gonna do her mystical radar thing?

Crane: Yes. If Kent or the Grimoire are near, her Spidey senses shall inform us.

Hey, someone's been catching up on his reading.

Only the classics.

You know, you and Kent actually have a lot in common.

Both men out of time, unwilling to give up on the women you love.

How heartening to know you compare me to a murderous warlock.

What I'm saying is... unlike Kent, you made the right choices.

He let his regret over his mistakes turn him into something dark and evil.

Regret can change the direction of your life.

Or stop you from living the one you're meant to have.

Lieutenant, do you have a vision of the life in store for us?

No.

All I know is that being a Witness is not a 9:00-to-5:00 job.

You can't punch out and go back to your three-bedroom, two-bath Craftsman at the end of the day.

Our enemies are willing to do whatever it takes.

We have to do the same to defeat them.

Yes, I violently agree, but we do not fight against something.

We fight for something.

For love, family, a life.

I pray we never lose sight of what is important, for that is what drove Kent into darkness.

(clattering nearby)

You are witchbreed.

Helena?

No, but her blood runs through my veins.

That is why I will stop you.

Child, if witches have agency in this world, it is because of me.

The darkness has turned you mad.

And given me powers that you couldn't possibly fathom.

Or could you?

Do I sense seeds of darkness within?

Have you never wondered why your powers betray you when you need them the most?

You are walking the wrong path.

What would you know about my path?

I know that you cannot defeat me because you are not one with yourself.

Has your soul been so twisted... you've forgotten all that's sacred to our people?

You have broken that bond.

Yes.

But now, I will make everything right.

Eh-nah-nah lo-bar Ur-wah.

Eh-nah-nah lo-bar Ur-wah.

Rise...

(deep growling)

(gasps)

Go!

(growling)

I took out one of 'em.

What happened to the one that was after you?

We were able to evade it.

I will stop Kent, but I need you to keep the other demon at bay.

Crane: Katrina, be careful.

(clattering)

(demon growling)

(groans)

(groaning, gasping)

Curb thy foul stench, unholy minion.

(growling)

You really need to work on your trash talk.

My tr... Katrina.

You are a formidable witch.

But you resist your full potential.

Give in to the darkness.

There you will you find your true self.

(gasps)

There. Now you see.

(door shuts)

Katrina.

Kent... he has the Grimoire?

Yes.

And it's complete.

And now that he has the book, I am no match for the power of his magic.

I cannot defeat him.

Where would Kent go?

Is there anything else he needs to complete the resurrection spell?

Literature's unclear.

Are you able to sense the Grimoire any more?

Katrina?

No. The battle has taken its toll.

It might be some time before I recover.

We need to act now.

I'm gonna check on a few things.

Maybe you and Katrina can come up with a Plan B on how to take him down.

Mm.

You seem shaken.

Magic is no ordinary w*apon.

It simply cannot be reloaded like a musket.

There are dimensions to my magic that even I have not explored.

I will find Kent.

And when I do, there is no magic in the world that can protect him.

Bartender: There you go, sir.

Man: Thank you.

Captain.

Thanks for meeting me so late.

No worries. I was just watching TV.

Do you know there's a show where people go on dates naked?

Yeah, it's on after the one where they cook naked.

I should have just stayed dead.

(snorts)

(chuckles weakly)

So, what's on your mind?

What do you remember about coming back?

From the great beyond?

Yeah.

Was there a specific location of reemergence? A portal?

(sighs) It's all a blank.

Why? What's going on?

We may be dealing with an undead problem.

You're the closest thing we have to an expert on the topic.

(wry laugh)

If you're thinking mystical portals, wouldn't Katrina be your person?

She's out of commission right now.

So you're a man down, morale is low, and you're outgunned.

Want my advice?

You keep fighting.

You don't back down, you don't make excuses.

If there is one thing I've learned from all I've been through, it's that you don't stop.

Afterlife suits you.

You seem to be a lot more...

Jacked up?

(both laugh)

I was gonna say "alive," but we can go with your version.

(both laughing)

Nothing like dying to give you some perspective on life.

Captain, it's good to have you back.

Thanks.

Man: Hey! What are you doing?

Ronnie: Sorry, my mom's just...

Man: Oh, it's you. Come here.

What are you doing in our room?

I... I-I'm sorry.

No one answered, so I was just checking to see if everything was all right.

And who asked you to do that?

Ronnie!

Are you all right?

I want you out of here now, or I'm gonna call the cops.

Relax, mamacita. The cops make a mess, and you never know who's gonna get hurt in the confusion.

Be out of your hair in a day or two.

Comprendo?

Hey! You enjoying the show?

Why don't you come down for a better view?

(door opens)

How's Katrina?

Staying strong... as always.

It's good to hear.

I'm guessing she won't be able to answer the bell for round two?

No. That honor falls upon us.

The question is, how to defeat Kent without Katrina's magic.

His powers are most formidable.

Before Katrina was here, we took down all kinds of supernatural threats without magic.

I scanned all the 911 calls for the past few hours.

There are no zombies walking the streets, so, either Kent hasn't cast the resurrection spell yet, or we're wrong about what he's doing.

When Katrina faced off against Kent, he uttered a most curious phrase.

"Eh-nah-nah lo-bar Ur-wah."

An ancient Aramaic dialect.

Mm-hmm.

Translated, it means, "I am the traveler."

Whew.

The traveler.

Grace Dixon's journal.

Yeah. Grace catalogued all of the magic known to her world.

At one point, she wrote about "The Traveler Spell."

Ancient, powerful invocation.

It allows the user to jump into the past.

To jump into the past, as in travel through time?

Mm-hmm.

Kent is not trying to resurrect his lost love.

He's trying to go back to her.

Do you know what this could mean?

The mind reels.

Wait. If Kent goes back and changes the past, he could start a chain reaction that rewrites history.

Our lives, our families, you and me, everything that we know.

Will be changed.

Forever.

To attempt the Travelers spell, Kent will need to tap into an enormous wellspring of energy.

A convergence of mystical fields.

The ley lines.

Yes. And he will need to do so at a time of astral synergy.

Katrina said her powers were heightened right now.

Something about a tide.

Perigean tide, when the moon is closest to the Earth.

The height of its effect occurs at midnight.

We only have a couple of hours.

Lieutenant, useful though these reinforcements may be, I fear Kent's magic may be more powerful still.

Irving: Then we'll have to make our own magic.

I asked the captain to come.

With Jenny off chasing the Orb of Mystical Awesomeness, or whatever artifact she's looking for, we're shorthanded.

What else can you tell me about this Kent?

Uh, he is a powerful warlock who practices blood magic.

It is a visceral power that he enhances artificially through Jimsonweed.

Like some kind of magical steroids?

That's what I said.

Captain... you still have friends in the forensic lab?

We might need the help of some chemists.

After Kent knocked us back, Katrina was able to fell him.

Katrina's magic taps into the natural world, the elements of wind, rain, lightning.

Abbie: Elements.

Now, we can work with that.

We're gonna need a generator, possibly a fire hose.

It'll take a little time to get everything together.

Why don't you and Frank figure out who's gonna man the equipment while I go get ready to face Kent.

No.

I will face Kent.

You asked me before about my commitment to the cause...

Crane, you don't need to prove anything to me.

No, I do not.

I will prove it to Kent.

_

_

(whooshing)

Sarah.

(hissing, loud bang)

You do not belong here.

(Kent gasps)

Tricks!

Tricks will not protect you.

I have defeated your spellcaster.

She understands my power.

Crane: Power that can be turned against you.

Atropine... found in Jimsonweed, which you use to boost your powers.

In high doses, it causes hallucination and seizures, something we know through modern chemistry.

Your magic is vulnerable to elemental energy.

Such as lightning.

And in the 21st century, we make our own lightning.

(zapping, crackling)

The spellcaster of whom you speak...

(grunts)

...her name is Katrina Van Tassel.

(grunts)

And you've brought harm to her family!

And you've brought harm to her!

(grunts)

And to me!

(grunting)

Crane.

Crane. Crane, come on. It's over.

(panting)

Frank!

It's done.

Irving!

Irving!

(groaning weakly)

(cracks)

Abbie: Captain!

Captain!

Over here!

Kent's gone.

He disintegrated.

The Grimoire.

No trace.

Must have been on his body, destroyed with him.

This was a good win.

Damn right it was.

You should put some ice on that.

Oh, no.

I'll be fine.

Very well.

You surprised me out there, Crane.

Going all Rambo like that.

Remind me never to lay a hand on Katrina.

It was about more than protecting my wife.

Something in Kent's story... struck a nerve.

That a person could so easily betray the people who trust and rely on him most.

And after you said I reminded you of him...

Crane, you know I didn't...

No offense was taken.

But it made me realize we are, all of us, walking a razor's edge between darkness and light.

Come on.

I think we've earned a couple of beers.

Want to grab Katrina?

Uh... No. She is resting.

Said she does not want to be disturbed.

The epithets I hurled at Kent during battle, that was good... good trash talk?

Wasn't bad. But for some real practice, we're gonna have to take you to a hockey game.

Hockey.

(flower crackling)

(Katrina grunts with effort)

(crackling)

Good morning, gentlemen.

What the hell?

I know you're all very busy destroying your lives, day after wretched day.

What do you want?

Well, you see, I, too, have been destroying my life.

For weeks now, I've hid from the world, unsure of who I am or what I am to do.

You see, I k*lled my father.

And since that time, all I could feel was... crushing regret.

But then I saw you threatening the woman and her son.

(scoffs) Is that what this is about?

You don't need to get all Papa Bear about it.

Parish: Oh, no, you've got it wrong.

I admit that for a moment I was drawn to what Mary and Ronnie represented.

A simple life, simple needs, humanity.

But then you reminded me of something.

There is a natural order of things in this world.

There will always be sheep and wolves.

(scoffs)

(chuckles)

And I... I am a wolf.

(cracks)

(cracks)

(cracks)

Hmm. Hmm.

Hmm.

(whistling jauntily)

Captain Irving, good to see you.

Didn't expect to be back here again.

(wry chuckle)

Where it all came to an end.

I take it you've been busy?

The Witnesses trust me again.

They're so desperate to believe in people.

(chuckles quietly)

So you're gonna use this to fulfill Moloch's vision?

Moloch is dead and so are his plans.

No longer am I the Horseman of w*r.

No longer will I be defined by anyone else.

From here on, destiny bends to my will.

You were wrong, Captain Irving, when you said this is where it all ended.

This... is where it all begins.
