[Doug] Wrench.

Wrench.

Are you sure you're going to make it in time?

[grunts] No choice.

That night dive's been booked for months.

I'm not going to let them down.

Uh, screwdriver.

Screwdriver.

If you need a scalpel next, you're out of luck.

[both chuckle]

Dad, your watch!

Oh, no.

That was the one Mum gave you.

I don't have time to get it now.

I've got to find another wrench.

We can dive for it tomorrow.

Dive?

Sure.

You and I haven't jumped in for ages.

It'll be fun.

Yeah, fun.

Wow. You sound... out of this world.

Well, it's your song.

The music's beautiful.

No, it's the way you sing it.

[Sirena laughs]

If you two were any sweeter, I'd have to slap a health warning on you.

Can you take this food out to Evie's dad's boat?

I'm completely flat out.

Where's Erik?

He's a no-show.

Again?

[sighs] Okay.

I'll help.

It's a half-hour late, so you guys will have to motor.

Sorry, I'm late.

Let me take that.

[David] No, you help Carly.

And, Erik, lift your game, okay?

This is nice, just the two of us.

It is nice.

So, I've been thinking.

[chuckling] That can be dangerous.

We're always at the café together.

We never get to spend any time, you know, alone.

If you want to.

Are you asking me out?

Like, on a date?

I guess I am.

We could go to the movies.

Actually, I know this beautiful secluded beach up on the coast.

We could have a picnic, spend the day swimming, do some snorkeling.

I don't know about that.

You don't like snorkeling.

That's okay.

We can just swim.

How about the weekend?

Hey, kids. Where's Evie?

Haven't seen her.

Mr. McLaren, have you ever seen anything, I don't know, strange in the water?

Depends what you mean by "strange."

I think jellyfish are pretty weird.

No, something in the marina.

Something large with a tail, a big tail.

David saw you.

What?

As a mermaid.

Does he know it was me?

I don't think so.

Evie! You'll never believe what I saw.

Must have been somebody snorkeling.

[Carly] A mermaid?

You've been in the sun too long.

No, it was right there in the marina!

[Carly] Sure, along with E.T.?

Now, I've been working non-stop.

I really need a break.

[David]

Hey, you're not going to believe this.

What's David going on about?

He saw Evie in the water.

It's okay. He doesn't know it was her.

Well, that makes it okay then.

Ondina. Tell us what happened.

[Evie] I never meant to put anyone at risk.

I just didn't know Sirena and David were going to be there.

You know I would never have gone in the water.

It's just... that watch means so much to my dad.

It was the last present Mum gave him before she d*ed, and now he's expecting me to dive with him tomorrow to get it back.

What am I going to do?

Simple.

We're going to find the watch before he comes back, okay?

Okay.

Thank you.

Okay, we have a serious problem.

So you won't go swimming with me?

No.

David is telling everybody what he saw.

[sighs]

No one will believe it.

But he's drawing attention to us.

So, what do we do?

Talk to him.

Convince him to drop it.

It's not here.

It has to be.

Try again.

[man 1] Make a left here.

[man 2] Yeah, all right.

Ben, is there room in the back?

The tide's pretty strong, so I'm guessing it's been pulled along the marina.

[Evie] It's hopeless.

Relax. Your dad's away until the morning.

We still have time.

Don't say anything.

Ondina, not helping.

It was an accident.

I know.

That's why we're taking care of it.

David, do you have a sec?

About what you saw...

I know what I saw.

You don't have to believe me.

It doesn't matter what I believe.

The thing is, you can't go around talking about it.

You know what people are like.

They'll laugh at you.

I don't care.

Well, I do.

So do the rest of your friends.

You're a nice guy, David.

We don't want to see you humiliated.

So you'll keep quiet?

Are you kidding?

This is the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me.

[sighs]

[Sirena] We have no option now.

I have to tell David the truth.

I hate lying to him.

You can't.

I trust him.

He'll keep our secret.

I know he will.

What if you're wrong?

Cam's known about us for ages and he hasn't said anything, and David is way more reliable.

Land people don't know we exist.

Keeping that secret is a mermaid's greatest responsibility.

It's what's kept us safe for centuries.

Don't say anything.

If everybody keeps quiet, he might forget all about it.

[Sirena sighs deeply]

Well, look who it is.

The Mermaid Man.

Carly here told me all about your little encounter of the watery kind.

I did see her.

Oh, yeah. Yeah, of course you did.

Now, I had this great idea.

We could pop her out on the deck, she could sing a song and lure in customers.

[Carly laughing]

One thing I've always wondered.

How do mermaids keep their hair so nice?

Seawater always makes mine go frizzy.

[Carly laughs]

[Joe] Oh.

And then when we find Bigfoot, we could teach that guy how to tap dance, the two of them can do a routine together.

Bro, you're going to clean up.

[both laughing]
David?

[Ondina] Hey.

[Erik] You look happy.

[Ondina] My day just keeps getting better.

Sirena wants to tell David everything.

You don't think she will?

Right now, I don't know what to think.

All I wanted was to get our home back.

I had no idea things would get this complicated.

You need to cool off.

Come on.

Things will be clearer when you relax.

Once upon a time, getting a drink was just about getting a drink.

Now it's about not getting wet.

When I used to live in the pod, I never had to lie.

Here I do it all the time.

Me, too.

[Evie sighs]

I hate keeping things from Dad.

Just makes everything so awkward.

Do you think you'll ever tell him?

Sometimes I want to.

But then I think about everything I'd be putting at risk if I did.

Would you really tell David?

I'm sure we can trust him.

He cares about me.

He'd never do anything to put me in danger.

But do you really know him that well?

I'm just saying.

What if he can't help himself?

What's that for?

I'm going to prove that mermaids are real.

I've set up three underwater cameras.

One's close to the pier just outside, the other is at the mouth of the estuary, and the third is at the marina where I first saw her.

They all transmit real time images back to this.

[machine humming]

[beeping]

[David] Pretty cool, hey?

That looks like a pretty expensive set up.

Are you sure you can afford all that?

If I can get a picture of a mermaid, it'll be worth it.

No chance of getting your dad's watch back now, not without ending up on the Internet.

Dad is still going to expect me to dive with him.

What if you tell him you've developed an allergy to rubber and you can't wear a wet suit?

It could happen.

Great. You're here.

Where's Ondina?

Why?

David is trying to get a picture of the mermaid.

He's set up a whole bunch of underwater cameras.

Ondina's gone for a swim with Erik.

Where?

There!

[Evie] It's all on the memory card.

We're blown.

Does anybody know how to erase it?

No time.

[David] Is there something there?

I didn't see anything.

Move!

No one goes in the water until we sort this out.

Where are we going to sleep?

[snoring]

[sniffing]

Ugh!

I hate sleeping in legs.

[yawning]

It's not natural.

[Mimmi] We have no choice.

We can't go to the moon pool while the cameras are watching.

There's a simple solution.

You are not telling David our secret, and that is final.

We're mermaids.

We can't stay dry forever.

[sighs]

What?

If David wants to see a mermaid, why don't we show him a mermaid?

What?

David!

Come over here.

More seaweed?

No. You've got to see this.

[David] Yes!

What's up?

Take a look!

[customers murmuring]

I was right.

[boy 1] Look at that.

I told you.

[boy 2] Totally!

[all laughing]

[Erik] I thought mermaids were better looking.

Yeah, I think that one needs a shave.

David!

Have you come for a laugh, too?

Of course not!

It's all over anyway.

You're giving up?

I could only afford to hire the equipment for 24 hours.

Besides, maybe it's better she's not found.

If everyone's laughing at me, imagine how they'd treat her.

She'll end up in some freak show in a zoo for everyone to come and gawk at.

I guess.

It's better she stays free, in the ocean, where she belongs.

Can't dive without a wet suit.

It's at home.

It's not much use there.

Dad, I can't dive with you.

Because?

Because...

Well, it's kind of hard to explain. I--

[Zac] Hi.

[clears throat]

So I went swimming this morning and look what I found.

[laughs]

Evie said you'd lost it.

This means a lot, Zac.

Thank you.

No worries.

We'll do that dive another time, eh?

Sure, Dad.

Thanks, mate.

You were the only one that didn't laugh at me, Sirena.

The world is way more magical than we can ever know.

There are lots of secrets.

It's best to keep an open mind.

Perhaps one day you will find your mermaid.

I hope you're with me when I do.

I think there's a good chance I will be.
