Previously on "Major Crimes"...

Heroin found underneath the baby's car seat.

3-year-old boy went to the hospital... D.O.A.

Tamika Weaver was talking to someone on a pre-paid cell before she and her baby were sh*t to death.

I don't know how many times I gotta tell y'all I don't know nothing. I'm hoping that telling John Barnes his son is dead will make him more cooperative.

Can't be true! Stop lying to me!

You ever hear of the Reese murders?

Our victims were sh*t with the same g*n that k*lled Officer Reese and D.D.A. Gray?

We found the m*rder w*apon in the altar of your church.

My god. You found the g*n.

Hickman perjured himself on the stand.

He lost us the m*rder case of an L.A. cop.

He was Mike's partner.

You don't know anything we don't know!

I know the guy Emile's living with runs a chop shop.

Buddha, I presume. We have a consent form allowing us to search your house.

For what? Emile Fisher.

Oh, no. What happened?

Emile was m*rder*d. That's what happened.

[Static]

You rolling, Buzz?

Buzz: Yes, sir. That's what the little red light means.

Buzz, over here. In addition to the syringe, we've got a burnt spoon...

A lighter.

Your standard everyday cook set.

Heroin sold separately.

And who do we know selling heroin?

Let's have S.I.D. put a rush on printing everything in this house.

Tao says m*rder, but the guy could've offed himself.

Captain, looking through the auto body shop, not only is Buddha taking cars apart, he's put 'em together again with secret compartments.

Another friend of the 28th Street Bloods in the drug trade.

Buddha also uses a pre-paid cell.

Does his number show up on Tamika's cell?

No, ma'am, but we found a box full of used pre-paids in the garage.

He could be cycling through them.

Steph, if you would ask Chief Howard to expedite and do the searches on those phones, please.

[Door opens]

All right, no evidence of forced entry.

Do we have any idea where our homeowner Buddha was this afternoon?

Tao: He said he was at work.

His workers confirmed that, of course.

Sanchez: What does it matter where Buddha was?

He could've left Emile with a hot sh*t.

The guy sticks himself and dies while the k*ller is miles away.

So what if Buddha was the third guy in the car during the m*rder of Reese?

Um, Emile comes here from prison, and who drops him off? Mark Hickman.

Flynn: Buddha freaks and says, "what are you doing hanging out with that cop?"

And Emile says, "he's been all over me about the third guy."

Who we could still arrest for the m*rder of Officer Reese?

Emile snitched before.

He just spent over 24 hours with the L.A.P.D.

Sharon: So we thought Emile was afraid of prison.

Maybe it was Buddha. Bring Buddha downtown.

See where he was during Tamika's m*rder.

[Inhales sharply, sighs]

Morales: No fresh injection points, other than the one that k*lled your victim.

So he wasn't a habitual user?

Well, not recently.

I found patches of scarring on both arms, but from the looks of them, many years old.

Cause of death?

Too much of a bad thing.

But that's unconfirmed until I open him up.

What about m*rder?

A spoon, a needle, and a lighter beside him?

No signs of struggle. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but looks like the guy k*lled himself.

Someone could've given him bad dope, ma'am.

That's difficult to prove in here.

Is it possible he was unconscious when the drug was administered?

Oh. Sure.

I could look for knockout agents if you want.

I'll start with the old standards... ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol. If you find one of those, let me know immediately, doctor, thank you.

Provenza: Well, we may not have all the answers, but I think we do have better questions.

Such as?

How could there be no fingerprints on the syringe we found by Emile?

Not even his own.

And why did S.I.D. find residue of corn starch near the chair in which he d*ed?

Just like the corn starch we found on the m*rder w*apon.

And on the heroin in Tamika's car.

Those are good questions.

L.A. clear's phone dump also shows that whoever called Tamika right before she d*ed also called Emile an hour after we released him.

And we still have no idea who this person is?

Unfortunately, no, which is another of our better questions.

But hearing Emile and Tamika maybe both spoke to the same person right before they d*ed got us a warrant. We're set up on the mystery phone, but it's turned off, battery out.

Well, maybe the owner will turn it back on.

And leave it on for at least an hour so it pops back up online? I don't like the odds.

We could get lucky.

We've been conspicuously short of luck lately.

Where were Dennis and Daniel Price yesterday?

Reverend Price was at the church preparing for the funeral of Tamika and her son.

His brother Dennis was with him the whole time.

Also, Mark Hickman's hanging out at the church parking lot.

But he's not been lonely since Emile's release.

There's been over 100 people that have come and gone.

A reverend cop k*ller could've arranged a hit through any one of them, ma'am.

Yeah, like he arranged the m*rder of D.D.A. Gray when he was away at county.

Captain, a delicate proposition.

Since we're checking people's alibis for when Emile d*ed, our last good question might be, where was Mark Hickman?

You know... [sighs]

I really think Amy has the best chance of getting anything out of Mark.

Um, she's the only one here who he doesn't know personally.

And you and I have things to discuss later.

All right, Amy.

First, tell Hickman that Emile k*lled himself.

When he argues it was m*rder, ask for his alibi.

Will do, Captain.

Thank you.

What does Buddha say about all these cars in his shop with no owners?

None of the vehicles were reported stolen, and some of the parts that were replaced were of...

Dubious origin.

And you might be surprised to learn that all those cars were charitable donations to the salvation community church, and Buddha and his team were repairing them for resale.

Flynn: Take a seat.

Take a seat.

[Clears throat] [Sighs]

Now what's this about? Where's Emile?

Emile... he's a good friend of yours?

When we were kids, people used to mess around with him.

Easy Emile, he was soft on the outside.

So I stood up for him. Then he got into dr*gs.

I got into cars. Didn't see him around as much.

Even though you were in the same g*ng?

No, no, I was never jumped in.

I was more like g*ng-adjacent.

Of course, now I'm a devout Christian.

[Chuckles] Yeah. With a prescription for pot.

It's kind of funny.

Guy named Buddha finding Jesus.

Provenza: Yeah. Yeah, he found Jesus, all right.

Found him in one of those secret compartments he builds into cars.

Sanchez:Why did you put up Emile when he got out of prison, if you two went your separate ways?

Look, it wasn't like there was exactly a welcoming party for him returning back to the neighborhood.

So I figured, I'd put him up for a bit.

Yo, where is he?

When was the last time you saw him?

Yo, how long you gonna keep doing this?

Do I have to get a lawyer?

'Cause when people read me my rights, I get a little antsy.

You want us to arrest you?

For what?

Look, yesterday, I saw Emile.

He came around the job around 2:00, asking for some money... and I gave it to him.

What? He did something stupid with it?

Well, that depends on what you think of as stupid.

We found Emile in your house early last night, dead, with a needle next to him.

Emile dead? From dope? No.

No, I don't believe it.

Yeah? Well, you better believe it.

Emile is dead, and do you have any idea
where his heroin might've come from?

No. No, I don't know anything about any heroin.

You drive in sundays for services at salvation community?

Pick up a little uncut dope from your minister?

And then leave it for your snitching friend to sh**t up?

Tamika Weaver. You know her?

From the old neighborhood?

Emile tell Tamika stuff you didn't want anyone to know?

Like where you were when Officer Reese was m*rder*d?

I see this is gonna be a long day.

Let's get the lawyers in here. How 'bout that?

[Cellphone chimes]

Oh, uh, Captain. Bad news. Another sh**ting?

No, no, I, uh, I left a flag on her name.

Rusty's mother's just been arrested by Hollywood.

Driving the car her boyfriend used in the armed robbery.

Oh, my god.

What else can go wrong?

[Gear shifts, engine stops]

Tamika's funeral isn't till tomorrow.

And, uh, you look... tired.

Maybe you should head back to your boat.

Can't.

Every time this case gets hot again, my wife ends up banishing me to the house.

Because she doesn't like thinking about you and Rachel Gray?

Mm.

I don't like thinking about Rachel either.

But I can't help it. My wife knows it.

We go a few weeks, a few months, a year, and this case pops up and suddenly, she's all, "how could you have done this to us? You're choosing a dead woman over me."

Before you know it, I'm out on my ass till we make up.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Did you hunt me down to talk about my marriage?

No.

I'm here to tell you Emile d*ed last night.

Ah, damn it.

You guys had to let him go, huh?

Was he m*rder*d?

Overdosed.

Overdosed, bullshit. He didn't overdose.

Dr. Morales said that...

Reverend Trigger had Emile k*lled.

Daniel Price was in the church...

No. I'm telling you, he ordered it.

While Emile was sh**ting himself up and so was his brother.

You found the g*n at his altar. Listen to me! And they both have airtight... what more do you need?

Do you think Price is just suddenly gonna break down and name the third man?

You don't even know if there was a third guy in that car.

Yes, I do know. I do! I just can't prove it.

Where did Emile get k*lled? At Buddha's house?

Yeah.

Since you're sure it was m*rder, let me ask.

Where were you yesterday afternoon between the hours... will you stop acting like an affirmative action hire and focus on finding the actual bad guy?

Tell me, Amy. Amy!

Who in the Bloods puts up an established snitch in their guest room?

Buddha did that... out of what?

The kindness of his heart?

Where's he right now?

In custody, but he has an alibi for Emile's T.O.D. Do you?

You're looking at me like a suspect now?

If you're really looking at this like a m*rder, why not?

[Chuckles] Wow.

Maybe you brought up a third guy just to throw suspicion off yourself.

Sure.

Maybe you k*lled Tamika and planted the w*apon in the church to frame reverend Price.

Or maybe Rachel Gray woke up one morning and recognized you were out of your mind, so you sh*t her to death.

Or maybe you don't need a motive, Mark, because you're just that unstable.

Late yesterday, I was with my wife Sherry on a boat stuck in a 3-hour argument.

And now that you finally have the third guy in custody...

You and I are done.

Have a nice life, honor roll.

[Touchscreen clicks]

Rusty: Was Gary with my mom when the police picked her up?

No, but she was driving the car used in both the robbery and his getaway from Lieutenant Cooper.

Well, at least she's someplace safer than with that lunatic.

But she's refusing to answer questions.

She's not cooperating.

We're in recess till 3:00.

Oh.

Lieutenant Tao, Detective Dunn.

[Telephone ringing in distance]

Rusty, I'm sorry. I need to do this.

If you go over to county, maybe they will be processing your mother during visiting hours.

You're my mom.

I am.

Oh. I am.

Okay.

Okay.

[Door closes]

Before we talk about the murders of D.D.A. Gray and Steph's husband, I need you to know that connecting them to these new homicides through the m*rder w*apon is a prosecutorial nightmare.

And Hickman having been in the church where the U*i was found means a known perjurer who was accused of planting evidence is available to the defense.

It can't get any worse.

Hickman may also now be a suspect, too.

Oh! It does get worse. Since when?

Mark's an assh*le, but he'd never have sh*t Eric.

Or D.D.A. Gray. He loved her.

And that part really interests me, Mike, because when I was investigating Hickman's perjury, I questioned you and you regarding his professional behavior, and the affair with D.D.A. Gray never came up.

Captain, I-I only heard about it through my husband.

And after Eric d*ed, I...

I didn't want people to know he was talking about D.D.A. Gray behind her back.

Mike, you never said anything about this relationship because...

Because Mark was my partner.

Look, when he took the stand and said Daniel Price gave us a spontaneous confession, I had no problem saying that was a lie.

But the affair with D.D.A. Gray, that was his personal life, and I didn't want his wife to find out.

But of course she knew.

Sherry Hickman was on our side of the street going over a fraud case.

She was a good cop, by the way.

People don't seem to remember that.

After she was finished walking us through an arrest, she caught Rachel in the hallway and started yelling some version of, "leave my husband alone."

And D.A.'s office conveyed none of this information to me at I.A., why?

Well, you'd have to talk to the people who were in charge at the time, but Rachel was also sleeping with my boss when we both worked in Topanga.

And former Deputy Mayor Dickson.

And State Senator Bergside.

You're kidding.

And I'm pretty sure that the worry was that a lot of very important people would be embarrassed if you started digging deeply into Rachel's private life.

This affair creates another motive for Rachel's m*rder.

And now not only is Hickman a suspect, we have to think about his wife as well.

Emile told us where he and Daniel tossed the g*n used to m*rder Reese.

Maybe Mark shared that information with Sherry.

Um, and she went out and found the U*i before we could and held onto it until the trial to off D.D.A. Gray?

[Knock on door]

[Sighs]

Sharon, does this really sound more likely to you than a professional hit organized by the Bloods?

When Peter Goldman presents this to a jury as an alternative theory to this crime, absolutely, this is gonna sound credible.

Excuse me a moment.

Yeah?

Sorry to interrupt, but reverend cop k*ller just bailed Tamika's boyfriend John Barnes out of jail.

What? Why would he do that?

So the dirtbag could attend his girlfriend's funeral?

I don't know.

Well, reverend Price is getting ready to drive off in his own car, ma'am.

And a silver accord just pulled up for John Barnes.

So who do you want S.I.S. to follow?

Wait a minute.

Reverend Price paid John Barnes' bail outright?

No, but he and his congregation raised the $10,000 to cover his bond.

$10,000. Huh.

All right, tell S.I.S. to stay on Price.

He could be trying to shake his surveillance.

Detective Dunn. John Barnes has been released.

I want you and Julio to set up surveillance on his house and stick with him when he gets home.

Yes, ma'am.

Thanks.

Andrea, if you would ask around your office and see if there's anything else I need to know about D.D.A. Gray.

She was threatened by the Bloods.

That is beyond question.

It's why she was given protection.

Still, if you could ask.

[Exhales sharply]

About yesterday... you know, I really thought Mark knew something that he wasn't telling us, and I stooped to his level, and I shouldn't have...

And I'm sorry.

Mark Hickman brings out the worst in all of us.

Until we have an arrest, he is a distraction that we don't need.

Well, you'll have no more trouble from me.

Okay, Mike. Okay.

[Door opens]

Sanchez: Looks calmer than it is.

If Barnes doesn't come back home soon, I think we should maybe put a want out on him.

Far as we know, he hasn't broken the law.

You know, his girlfriend and his little boy were just m*rder*d.

Barnes is probably somewhere drinking it off.

That's what I did, after my husband...

You know.

How 'bout you?

When my wife d*ed?

Mm-hmm.

I drank...

For a night.

It just made it worse.

One night?

Wow. You catch on fast.

[Exhales]

Is that how you dealt with everything?

You drank?

For a month.

Then, uh, I left homicide for gangs. That helped.

Started running two miles a day. That helped. Mm.

I just kept telling myself one day someone would be held accountable.

Car.

Blue.

Of course, nothing says that Barnes has to show up in the same vehicle that picked him up at County.

No.

So you think holding someone accountable changes things?

What do we do for a living, Julio?

Yeah, if I didn't think holding someone accountable was important, I'd take a job at my father's company selling plumbing supplies.

He's never been sh*t at, drives home around 6:00, and takes my mother to Hawaii three weeks a year. Sounds good.

It's not my kind of life.

Finding the bad guy, hearing him say, "I did it," that's what keeps me going.

Accountability.

I don't know if that's the way out for me.

What else is there?

[g*nshots in distance]

Small arms. Maybe two blocks.

[g*nshots continue]

[Engine starts]

4 King 62 reporting, be advised.

We just heard a series of g*nf*re in the Adams/Normandie neighborhood.

[g*nf*re continues]

Go, right, right, right, right.

[Tires screeching]

Get units rolling this way, and please advise if any 9-1-1 calls come in. The address is...

Checking side streets. Nothing.

Right there, right there, Steph. Go left, go left, go left.

[Tires screech]

4 King 62, we are code 6 at address?

921.

921 south Chesapeake requesting backup.

Three down at location.

[Groaning]

Start rolling paramedics. Two Officers on site.

[Woman screaming]

L.A.P.D. L.A.P.D.

Man: Holy Mary, pray for us sinners...

[People speaking Spanish]

Hey, ma'am, I need you to put pressure on his stomach!

Aplica tensión, por favor. Rápido, rápido.

[Woman speaking Spanish]

Hold on.

[People speaking Spanish]

Hold on. Hold on. Help is gonna be here very soon. Hold on.

Stop it. Stop! Stop praying and get out of the way!

Hey, hey. Hey, you're gonna be all right.

[Gasping]

An ambulance is coming, okay?

Okay. Did you see anything?

Who did this?

[Gasping]

[Muttering indistinctly]

Did she see anything?

[Continues muttering]

What did she say? Can you hear her?

[Gurgling]

Yeah. I heard her.

She said "silver car."

How's that for the last words you ever say on earth?

[Sirens wailing]

[Speaking Spanish continues, sobbing]

[Sirens grow louder]
But asking my client to cancel religious services for victims of a m*rder you can't solve...

I won't do it.

We're not asking you to cancel Tamika's funeral, only delay it until we find who k*lled these latino teenagers.

We're worried the 300 mourners going in and out of your church represent 300 ways for the Diablos to retaliate.

Because of what John Barnes did after you bailed him out of jail yesterday.

At the risk of sounding overly concerned about the Constitution, there are millions of silver cars in L.A.

Nobody got the k*ller's plates, nor has anyone stepped up to identify John Barnes as the sh**t.

Why do you just leap to the assumption he's guilty?

Sharon: There are gangs involved here.

It doesn't matter who sh*t those children.

Diablos will sh**t back.

The funeral service will continue as planned.

But...

I can delay the procession and the burial to a less... volatile time.

[Cellphone vibrates]

Taylor: All right, okay, then.

We'll need cooperation for the L.A.P.D. to adequately guard this service.

Which means we will have to attend as well as surround your church.

I welcome the extra police presence.

As the almighty says, "I alone am not able to carry all these people. The burden is far... "

Excuse me, but I don't need scripture thrown in my face by a cop k*ller.

We need to get on with this, Captain.

Our special guest has arrived downstairs.

We have enough time to talk to her before we need to switch gears.

Please have Andy and Amy do the honors.

Thank you.

You are lucky I don't add discrimination by religious practice to our growing civil complaint.

[Huffs] This was a gift to you not having this burial today.

A gift.

[Door opens]

A gift.

Has g*ng intelligence found any personal connection between John Barnes and our three victims?

No, sir. Barnes probably took payback on the first latinos he saw.

That's one of the questions I'd like to ask him if we pick Barnes up at the funeral today.

And I have less than six hours till that service begins.

Chief, if you'll excuse me, I need to fully deploy around the church.

Go.

[Door opens]

[Chuckles] So, Captain, do you have anything to report that might defuse this situation?

Did you at least narrow the field of suspects?

I'm sorry, Chief. Not yet.

In fact, I am afraid that I may have to make it wider.

Hey, Sherry. I'm sorry to bother you with all of this.

Meet Detective Amy Sykes.

Sykes, yes.

I've had the pleasure.

Thank you for agreeing to talk with us, Mrs. Hickman.

Don't thank me. I'm not really interested in helping you.

And I'm Mark's wife, not his keeper, okay?

You guys can drag him back through the Reese murders all you want, but don't expect me to join you.

Toss-up who she hates more... us or her husband.

How do people stay married when they don't get along like this?

I asked myself that for years.

Um, we're trying to determine Mark's whereabouts afternoon before last, say between 2:00 and 5:00.

Probably drunk on our boat. Why?

You weren't with him?

No. Were you?

Uh... no.

But I did talk to Mark this morning and he told me the day before yesterday the two of you were arguing all afternoon.

If Mark isn't provoking arguments, he's asleep.

So he's just mistaken about the time. That's all.

Okay.

[Clears throat]

Have you ever seen this particular w*apon before?

[Gasps] Oh.

Is this the U*i?

The L.A.P.D.'S great white whale?

Y... you found this w*apon days ago.

Mark ever mention where the g*n was tossed after the Reese m*rder?

Sherry: I don't remember.

Back then, we weren't talking so much.

Okay, well, here's another date.

Do you recall where you were September 8, 2004, on or about the time... about the time that poor Rachel Gray was sh*t to death?

[Scoffs] You know, isn't it amazing that a woman who's been dead over a decade can still cause so much trouble?

Yes, I remember where I was.

In my car, on my way home from Parker Center.

I heard about the m*rder on my police radio.

And are you aware that at the time of her death, Rachel and Mark had been having... sleeping together.

I believe that's the, uh, socially accepted euphemism.

Only it was more than that.

She wasn't just some one off in the back of a Crown Vic.

Mark was in love with her.

Thought about Rachel night and day.

Obsessed.

He told you that?

No, she did before the Price trial.

Look, I didn't know that she was going to do me the favor of dying, so I made a complete fool of myself by confronting her in a hallway at her office.

But by the time I told her off, she was finished with Mark.

Poor guy.

She broke up with Mark before the trial?

So she said.

"Don't worry, Sherry.

Mark was never anything more to me than a little fun.

And now he's way too serious.

Keep him if you want."

And the look on her face, like she was dealing with an ignorant child.

But Mark never got over her.

And on we go.

Is that it? I mean...

Have I satisfied your curiosity?

Almost.

Last Monday night between 11:00 and 1:00 in the morning, where was Mark?

Well, I went to bed... alone... at 9:00.

I assume that my husband was drinking tequila on the deck of our boat until the glass fell out of his hand.

So if he needs an alibi, I'm not it.

Andy, don't get up.

I'm glad to see your charm hasn't withered with age.

Amy, till we meet again.

Wow. Bitter.

Captain, a lot of us here knew about Mark and Rachel, but nobody told her.

Sherry left mad.

Came back that way, too.

Sharon: Now that I've heard everyone out, what I really need to do is get John Barnes back into custody.

He just may be the key to everything.

Barnes was in lockup when Tamika and her child were k*lled.

Eh, what makes Barnes so special?

Daniel Price paid $10,000 for his bond.

Provenza: All right.

All right, when are we going to arrest the reverend cop k*ller and get this over with?

I'm sorry about not talking to you yesterday.

The D.A. said that really hurt your feelings, and that isn't what I meant at all.

Look, sober, I know that having me as your mom for so long, that was a bad deal.

But...

We... still have a chance to turn all that around.

Look, you have a good situation now.

And whatever obligation you think that you have to me, you don't, okay?

You have a better mother.

And... [sighs]

Rusty...

[Clears throat, sniffles]

I'll always love you.

And I'll always be sorry.

But you should not be my son.

You should go.

N-no, no. Mom...

If you were guilty, it's... it's... you can still... no... what?

No, I... I didn't know Gary was going to rob that store.

He told me he was just going to buy camels.

And then he came out and he told me to drive.

Then why can't you just say that to the D.A.?

You know what? I can't. This... I've said too much already.

You need to go. Mom, you need to talk about this with the D.A.

Or you need to let your lawyer...

I can't.

Mom, if you don't, you will go to prison. Okay?

Just make a deal when you give up Gary.

No.

And then you can...

No, no, no. Rusty, you don't understand.

Honey, if I say anything about Gary, he... he has friends all over county. He will know.

If I give him up, he will k*ll you.

Do you understand?

It's enough. So you need to go.

And you need to live your life. And don't come back.

Mom... Mom... Mom... wait, Mom.

Mom!

[Voice breaks] Mom!

Sharon: So Mark Hickman was stalking her?

Apparently, Eric noticed she had a tail and caught Hickman in the act.

So in this report, which Eric Dunn officially filed, which I have never seen, and which should have been forwarded to me at I.A. from your department 12 years ago... remember, I was not involved in this case back then.

But I understand their thinking.

Proceedings against Price had already started.

Suspending Hickman would've hurt the prosecution of a cop k*ller.

And sometimes when we're in the big, fat middle of putting away a bad guy, we have to be a little lenient with policy digressions.

I understand all that, Andrea, but stalking is a crime.

Hickman insisted he wasn't stalking, only proving D.D.A. Gray didn't have adequate protection and that Dunn was incompetent for not catching him earlier.

Okay, wait a minute.

So Hickman was following her for a while.

Which means he knew D.D.A. Gray's security routines.

[Knock on door] But...

If Hickman k*lled her, why perjure himself to get Price and risk turning the spotlight his way?

[Door opens]

I'm sorry, Captain. I wouldn't interrupt, but results came back on the heroin that k*lled Emile Fisher.

It's 92% pure, and it's a positive match to the dope we found in Tamika Weaver's vehicle.

Which your witness, Lil Wheezy, said came from reverend Price's church.

Okay, Hickman seems to know way too much about what goes on around here, so for now, Julio, this information stays between you and me.

Uh, yes... ma'am.

My lips are sealed.

Oh, Julio, if you would, ask Chief Howard if he is all set up for us.

Thank you.

Yes, ma'am.

[Exhales]

Andrea, thank you for all of this, uh, but now...

This is Miss Margaret.

Oh. Yeah.

[Radio chatter continues]

Don't mind all this, miss Margaret, okay?

We're here to remember Tamika and Jeremiah.

Come on. This way.

L.A.P.D.'s resources must be severely strapped if they got you in the mix.

You know, I'm here for that young lady and her son.

And to show the community personally that the L.A.P.D. takes their deaths very seriously.

Yeah. The cameras are over there, Chief.

Leave it to you, Peter, to always know where the reporters are.

All right, reverend, sooner you begin, sooner everyone here is out of danger.

[Groans softly]

[Lowered voice] Lieutenant, I don't think we should clump.

Then move.

You move.

What are you worrying about?

That I might get struck by lightning.

You smell like brimstone.

Good afternoon.

Sharon: Lieutenant Provenza.

[Lowered voice] Uh... yes, Captain.

We're in place.

Detective Sanchez.

Sanchez: We're in the viewing room grabbing pics of condolence cards.

If Barnes doesn't show, maybe he sent his respects some other way, ma'am.

Sharon: If you see John Barnes, do not see anything that would alarm him during the service.

We have every entrance and exit to the building covered.

So he's not going anywhere. Chief Howard?

Fritz: We're sewn up.

Looks like Barnes is a no-show.

Any sign of Hickman?

No, not so far. Maybe he gave up and went home.

Reverend Price: As we bring this service to a close, we take comfort in knowing that the farewells of this world are not final.

Man: Amen.

We will see Tamika and Jeremiah again inside the gates of heaven in the sweet embrace of Jesus.

[Congregation murmurs]

Let us pray.

Our father...

...today we ask for the strength and the will and the faith to make these two beloved of our hearts the last deaths from g*ng v*olence in our neighborhood.

[Congregation murmurs]

Today we ask that you make this the last time we gather to mourn in this awful way, and that in our grief and our sorrow, we find faith to move closer in our walk with Christ.

In the precious name of Jesus...
