Rayna! Have you gotten my letters?

I just want to talk to her.

Call 911. Call 911...

Rayna! I just wanna talk to you!

I wanna make a Gospel Album.

That's gonna be beautiful.

I think all kinds of wonderful things are gonna start happening to you.

(rain pouring)

I felt something for Damien.

(indistinct chatter)

What are you looking for?

Nothing.

My goodness. You made all this?

Yes, pancakes for Mom. Bacon for you.

You're a sweet girl.

Well, I just figured since you guys are finally recording, you should have a good breakfast.

Thank you, baby.

Morning.

Morning.

You get a chance to tell her yet?

No.

What is this?

No sign of fire anywhere?

Ha, ha, very funny.

Oh, my goodness.

Why are the security guys back?

Our friend bailed himself out of jail.

Why didn't you tell me?

I was gonna tell you.

So he can just come here anytime now?

No. He still has to stay 300 feet away from us.

Oh, that went so well last time.

Yeah, well, this time we got security for the both of you.

What?

I'm sorry, baby.

We can't take any chances.

Okay...

Well, I'm gonna see Clay play at the 5 Spot on Saturday, so...

Well, that's fine. You're just gonna have to take one of the security guys with you.

Mom, I'm not going to a show with a creepy dude following me around.

Are you kidding me?

Yes, you are.

We don't have any choice in this matter.

I'm sorry.

Okay, I'm late.

Can we talk about this later?

Not really.

So when it says in Isiah, "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you," who is he talking about?

I don't have perfect peace.

Do you have perfect peace?

Maybe he's talking about inner peace.

But who's got that?

So this is the challenge.

If you're not in perfect peace, it says you still have to find what it means to trust.

We all do.

This really interests you?

You kidding?

Who knew you were secretly a dork?

(laughs) I love what y'all do here.

(sighs)

It's just kind of amazing.

Listen...

I want to do my next album with you and the choir.

What do you mean?

I want to do a gospel album.

You're kidding.

Why would I be kidding?

(scoffs)

W-Well, it's not exactly what you've done.

Which is why I want to explore it.

(sighs)

Well, I just... I don't think it's a great idea.

Why not?

You know why.

Come on, aren't we all equal in the eyes of God?

(sighs)

I don't know how to say this.

But, honestly, if that's how you're looking at it, then you really don't understand the problem.

I do.

I do understand the problem, okay? I'm not stupid.

But... I just hear the music.

And it speaks to me.

Now I want the chance to explore it.

And... does that make me selfish? Maybe. I don't know.

But I do really want the chance to get that choir in a room and ask them.

Listen to what they have to say about it.

Do you feel comfortable enough doing that?

Not really, but I will.

Thank you.

I'm so sorry I'm late.

It's okay.

Hey.

I was stuck in a conference call for the new Denzel movie.

"Romania for the Old West." What do you think?

I would not know.

You look beautiful.

Oh, please.

(chuckling) It's true.

Thank you.

Um, so you said you wanted to see me about something?

I did and I'm glad.

Oh. Was there something you wanted to tell me?

Not tell you, no. Just see you.

Oh, my...

Look, I don't want to make you uncomfortable.

And I'm not trying to mess with you, but... something happened between us.

You know it and I know it.

And I want to honor that.

I don't know what I'm doing right now.

I never know what I'm doing. (chuckles)

So here's what I suggest. We eat lunch.

I'm not hungry.

Well, I eat lunch. You pretend.

We talk during that lunch.

Get to know each other a little.

And then I'll go back to my hotel room. And you can go back to your life.

And you decide whether you want to see me again.

Why is it me who decides that? Why not you?

'Cause you're the beautiful girl, and I'm the frog.

You always get to decide.

Hey! Hey, you! Just stay right there!

I'm not moving.

Suspect at the James' house. Call Nashville PD.

You just stay right there.

So you're gonna let him stand out there right now just threatening my family? You're gonna do that?

He's not threatening you right now, he's taunting you.

Oh, he's taunting. What is the diff...

You know what?

Take it easy.

I've had enough of this right now, okay?

I'm gonna end it right now.

I'd gladly join you, but you can't, all right?

All right, tell him.

Listen, an Order of Protection states that Hockney can't come within 300 feet of you and your family.

But your front door is exactly 317 feet from where he's standing. We measured.

This is horrible! I mean, I don't understand.

What is he trying to do?

Well, he wants your attention.

And he's getting it.

This is insane.

You're saying there's nothing we can do here?

You stay alert, stay safe.

You can move with us.

We can wait for him to make a mistake, which he will, because they always do.

And when he does, we put him away.

Yeah, but in the meantime, he's turning our lives upside down.

You should think of him like a t*rror1st.

Because in a way, he is.

Now his goal is to disrupt your life.

And to the extent you let him, he wins.

Trust me, all right?

You'll get through this.

Rayna: Please tell me he's not still out there.

No, he's gone for now.

God knows where.

(sighs)

In addition to being terrifying, this is incredibly inconvenient.

Yeah. I'm sorry, baby.

Daphne's got her concert, and...

I've got the CMT Awards next week and rehearsal.

Oof, I didn't sleep a wink.

(knocking on door)

Time to go, sweetie.

What's the matter?

My stomach hurts.

Oh, no. Since when?

Just this morning.

Do you think maybe you're nervous about all the security stuff?

I don't know.

Why don't we go get some food in you. See if that helps.

Okay.

I need to go to the bathroom.

(phone ringing)

I told you not to call me when I'm at work.

I got my period.

Oh, wow. Congrats.

I can help you when I get home, okay?

I need help now.

What?

I can't talk loud.

I'm in the bathroom.

My clothes got messed up. And now I can't go out.

Avery and the boys want some chicken wings from Brother Z's.

Okay, cool.

Um, sorry, so where are you now?

I'm in the bathroom.

I need new clothes and whatever else.

I'm sorry. I cannot come right now.

But I'm gonna figure something out, okay?

Just don't freak out.

Don't tell Mom, okay?

Maddie?

(door opens)

Hey, there.

Oh, hey.

I didn't expect to see you here.

Well, sometimes the unexpected happens.

Uh-oh.

Yeah...

There coffee in there?

In there.

Why are you here?

Why am I here? I'm here...

'Cause I'm trying not to k*ll the guy standing outside our house.

He's still there?

Well, he left in the night. But he'll be back.

Oh, my goodness. I feel so bad for Rayna.

Yeah, the girls too. I mean, the whole thing is just...

I don't even want to talk about, all right?

What's going on with you?

Uh, boring things compared to that.

Please bore me. It'd be a relief.

Okay, well...

Gunnar and I are supposedly back together again.

I thought you were...

Yeah, well, surprise, surprise. Now there's this other person I apparently have feelings for.

That English director?

Does everybody know about that?

What matters is what does Gunnar know.

Nothing. Well, something.

But it's not like anything's happened, so...

Yet.

I'm not gonna lie to anybody. I can't do that.

Well, that's good. Never works anyway.

Yeah. I remember you and Rayna sneaking around when I was little.

Y'all were stressed and miserable.

Yeah, we were. I don't recommend it.

It's just a big damn mess.

See, that's the thing. Doesn't matter how I work it in my head.

It just comes out as a big damn mess.

(sighs) Oh, Scarlett.

You know, all those years I was so out of control, I was always asking myself...

Is this who I am?

You know, is this the deepest part of me trying to express itself?

Or is the dark part just trying to take me down?

I mean, I had a pretty dark part.

I don't know about you.

Well, I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

Can't just be with both of them.

What do you want to do?

Honestly, I want some time to figure it out.

I just don't see how I'm gonna get that.

Well, as far as I know, you're over 21.

You can make your own damn decisions.

No matter what they think, all right?

Me? I think it's probably one of those deals where you're just gonna have to let the wave take you.

I was afraid you were gonna say that!

Uh-huh.

Mm-hmm.

Daphne?

Daphne? Are you in here?

I can't believe Maddie called you.

Well, of course, she did, honey.

Where are you?

You down here at the end?

Hey, I brought you a change of clothes.

I brought you everything you need, okay?

You wanna open the stall for me?

Everybody's gonna know.

They're not gonna know... you're gonna change your clothes and it's gonna be fine.

They're just gonna ask me where I've been.

Honey, we talked about this when it happened to Maddie.

There's nothing to be embarrassed about.

It happens to every single girl.

I'm gonna slide this under the door, okay?

And I'll give you a little bit of privacy.

I'll be right over here.

If you need anything, you call me, all right?

Okay.

Daphne: I didn't hear you say that!

What did you want me to do, Daphne?

You were still on the phone!

You are such a liar!

I would never lie about that! Get a grip!

What's going on?

Where's Mom?

She's on her way home. What's happening here?

Is she okay?

She's having a bad day.

You made me look like an idiot in front of everyone!

Oh, my God, Daphne, listen!

I get that you're having a tough day and I'm sorry.

But you can't be treating me like this! I did nothing wrong!

You need to talk to her!

Hi.

Hi.

Be prepared for some pushback.

You know how many people have said that to me?

(laughs) I get it. You're a force.

But this church, this music, these people.

It's new for you. And new for them.

Well, I respect everybody in there.

Well, I know that. But not all of them do.

Do you understand that if this happens, you get to introduce the world to your gift?

What do you mean?

Whether or not this works out, you're still gonna record an album just like I said.

I'm gonna push Highway 65 to sign you.

Wait. What?

I am.

Rayna James ain't the only girl in this town with an eye for talent.

I know that some of y'all have met my friend, Juliette.

She's become truly committed to what we are doing here.

And you know she's had some hard times.

That's how we met.

She has something to say to y'all.

And she really appreciates you giving her the time.

How you guys doing?

all: Good.

Good.

I want to start off by saying I have so much respect and admiration for this church.

And for the music you guys are making here.

And because of that, I want my next album to be a gospel album.

And I would be honored if y'all would record it with me.

Wow.

Ooh.

Thank you, Juliette.

Thank you too, Hallie. This sounds amazing.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Yeah.

Yeah.

Hello, Juliette. Thank you for your visit.

And thank you for the invitation.

My name's Vonetta.

Nice to see you again.

Okay, so why gospel music?

I mean, for us it's a sacred thing.

Well, it's sacred for me too now, now that I've been here.

And as an artist, I'd like the opportunity to explore it.

With your help, of course.

As backup singers or what?

No, as partners.

How's that gonna work?

I don't know yet.

I still have to figure that out. I haven't started writing songs.

You mean, this would be your songs?

Not what we're sing here?

No, no, no. We will definitely record the songs that you guys sing here.

I just want to write a few songs myself that fit with what you're doing.

Maybe you guys would want to write a song.

I would totally be open to that.

(group murmurs)

Yeah, yeah.

I'm just curious.

How long you been listening to gospel music?

A few months.

And how long you been going to church?

Any church? Not just this one.

Probably the same amount of time.

So you think that's enough time to know why we come here together every week?

Work so hard on this?

What this means to us?

No, no. I absolutely don't.

And I don't think I ever could.

You just love the music.

Yes.

Yes! I just love the music.

Which means it has no context for you.

No meaning that sets it apart.

That's not true.

You just have to listen to the music to know what sets it apart.

I feel like I'm transported when I hear your music.

I'm glad for you. That's good for you.

Maureen, give the girl a break.

I'm just asking.

Let her ask.

I mean, you know this is black music, right?

(laughter)

Yeah, I figured that out.

And even if it was white, gospel music?

I mean, isn't your thing a little sexier than that?

Oh, yeah, I'm looking real sexy right about now.

(laughter)

So you're gonna pay us?

Of course, I'll pay you.

I pay everybody I work with top dollar.

You can ask anybody.

So you just got it all figured out then?

I'm making a serious proposition here.

Sounds good to me.

Our religion isn't a business.

That's right.

Oh, and you think that making a gospel album is good business for me?

Sorry to cause you such difficulty.

Excuse me. You're the one who brought up business.

You don't see me twisting your arm to be a part of this.

I see you coming in here telling us what we're gonna do.

Oh, don't give me that! I'm not telling you anything.

And I'm questioning these people because you have obviously made up your mind.

(all talking at once)

(plays guitar)

Hey, beautiful.

Ready to play?

(sighs)

We need to talk.

He's back in town.

Oh, he never left.

(scoffs)

I knew it.

And you been seeing him.

I met him for lunch.

So in other words, you slept with him.

No.

But you're going to.

(scoffs)

I can't believe this.

Can't you see I'm just trying to be with you?

Will you listen to me?

Do you see that?

Do you see that things are different now?

Okay. Sit down.

I've decided that I can't really be with anyone right now.

I'm sorry.

What are you saying?

I'm saying that...

I feel something for this person.

And I don't know what it means.

And I need time to figure it out.

So you're breaking up with me.

I can't be in a committed relationship right now.

And I don't know what that means.

We could see each other or not.

I just know that I'm not going to cheat, and I'm not going to lie.

So you are gonna sleep with him.

Not everything is about sex.

I need to go and be with myself. It's not either/or.

No, no, you either are gonna sleep with the guy or you're not.

(chuckles)

Look at me.

So much has happened between us that I'm numb.

I don't feel anything for you right now.

And that scares me.

It scares me that I could feel something for anyone else.

But I'm not going to let fear stop me anymore.

That is it, and I'm sorry that it's upsetting.

You can deal with it in any way you need to.

Yeah, that's fine.

Just sleep with the guy.

Did you hear a word I said?

I heard everything I need to know.

(sighs)
Hi, babe. How things go at the church?

Hit a little bump, but we'll work it out.

Yeah, I'm sure you will.

Oh, hey, the uh... the new track?

What'd you think?

I think that it's great that you're getting back to your roots.

Yeah...

And?

You have an amazing band.

They're incredible.

All right. What'd you think of the song?

Oh, boy.

No, it's good, it's good. It is, okay?

Just you're not this angry kid anymore.

Haven't you matured past this a little bit?

Uh, no.

But thanks for the feedback.

Come on... I'm just being honest.

I feel like I'd like to do something special for Daphne.

You know, since she got her period.

I don't know. It's a big milestone.

That usually what happens?

I have no idea.

I got my period the week after my mother d*ed.

That was awful.

(sighs)

Nobody around to help me. I had to figure it all out by myself.

Oh, baby, I can't even imagine.

No, honey, you can't.

(laughs)

Anyway, that's why I wanted just... I don't know.

I just want to make it better for her.

Absolutely. Let's throw her a party.

A period party?

Is that not a thing?

No, honey, that's not a thing.

(laughter)

I think you're gonna have to leave this one to me.

Listen, I was thinking maybe we could get in a recording session tomorrow night, like late.

Are you changing the subject?

I'm trying, yeah.

Yeah, you really are.

Yes, I would like to do that.

All right.

I've got a bunch of stuff I have to do at the office tomorrow. And then I'm all yours.

All right. I'll tell the guys.

All right. I'll see you.

All right.

Where you going?

Don't wanna talk about periods anymore?

You giving me a hard time?

Mm-hmm.

Is that what you're doing?

Good God, I love you.

How much?

You want me to show you?

Yeah.

All right, I'll show you.

Yeah. Honestly, that was nothing.

But thank you for asking.

Some of us were gonna maybe go hang out in Ryan's back yard.

I have concert rehearsal.

But maybe after, I could stop by.

Awesome.

I'll see you later. I gotta go.

Hi. How you feeling today?

I'm okay.

Good.

What is that?

Just something for you.

For what?

You know. Yesterday was a big day.

This is called a first moon gift.

Oh, my God, Mom. It happens to everyone.

I know, but this time it happened to you, so...

Thank you.

You're welcome.

How come you didn't want me to know what was going on yesterday?

Because I knew you'd make a big deal out of it.

Which you are doing.

Well, you are a big deal to me.

Mom...

Hey, look, babe.

You're my treasure.

And even if it embarrasses the hell out of you, it's always gonna be my pride and joy as your mother to celebrate every single milestone with you.

Thank you.

Okay. Love you.

Please don't say I'm a woman now.

I want to apologize.

I didn't mean to offend anybody yesterday.

Or put myself in your shoes.

Or act like I know everything.

Or tell anything about what it means to perform your music.

I've made a good living off of this.

And I'm grateful for that.

That doesn't mean that I've lived a good life.

I've sinned a lot.

And I've hurt just about everybody that's ever cared about me.

Hurt myself.

I lived my life like a freight train, and I ran over anybody who got in my way.

I can't change that.

But we all know that God works in mysterious ways.

And not that long ago when I was napping on death's doorstep, He paid me a visit.

And He gave me a gift.

And your music.

And this incredible woman over here.

I don't want to steal from you.

I want to honor you.

I want to honor God and his mysterious ways.

And if you want to help me share your gift with the world, then I think you might just open some hearts and minds that are cold.

I do care.

You think that I don't know that you're just acting?

I'm not...

That you're just pretending to be nice?

Like, oh, Wayne's a good name?

As if you like my name? As if you even care about my name?

I like your name, Wayne.

It was given to me by an awful man.

An alcoholic abuser like your husband.

Deacon's not an abuser.

That's what they all say.

That's what my Mom would say when he b*at her.

And he'd b*at me.

I'm sorry you experienced that.

Stop that.

Stop what?

Stop talking down to me!

I'm not talking down to you!

I'm scared because you're threatening me!

I'm not threatening you!

I've never hurt a woman in my life.

Well, that's good.

I'm the one that's hurt, okay?

I thought you'd understand that.

I wanted to talk to you 'cause I could see that you were different.

You weren't like the ones that lie, and make fun of me behind my back.

Make up stupid excuses like I don't know what's going on.

Hey, give me a break, Wayne.

You think you're the only person who's ever been abused in your life?

I didn't say that.

Well, I've got a story for you.

And this is not something you're gonna find on the Internet.

You wanna hear it?

Yeah.

All right.

My father was a sociopath.

k*lled my mother, covered it up.

And that happened when I was 12 years old.

And I have to deal with that every day of my life.

And then sometimes it gets to me, and I overcompensate with my husband.

And in my business, and I say things to my daughters that I know deep down are just gonna make 'em want to run away from me.

But it's like I can't help it.

'Cause that horror, it's just right there at the surface.

And I don't want them to feel that.

And I don't want them to think I'm feeling it.

So I write songs and I sing them, 'cause that's the only way I know how to deal with this pain that I carry inside me.

And that loser husband of mine?

His daddy whipped him every single day.

And that's the same piece of crap that got him drinking in the fourth grade.

How is it we can be so awful to the people we love the most?

That just makes me so angry.

Makes me so sad.

That's why I wanted to talk to you.

Wayne, I know you're carrying that kind of pain too.

I see that.

But the only choice we have is we got to go on.

We can't give in to that.

You give in to that, that evil man, he wins.

'Cause that means he broke you just like he wanted to.

Now you being here right now, you're giving in to it.

Oh, God.

I bet it wasn't just your daddy. Was it your mama too who hurt you?

How'd you know?

I just... I just had a feeling.

She did things when she drank.

I'm sorry.

I knew you'd get it.

911. What's your emergency...

What am I hearing?

911, what is your emergency...

Show me your hands now!

Why'd you do that? I trusted you!

I have two daughters who need me, okay?

That's all I care about right now!

Well, I should k*ll you right now!

Wayne, no.

I feel pain just the same way you do.

You k*lling me, that's not gonna accomplish anything!

Oh, God, what do I do...

Oh, God... (breathing heavily) what do I do...

Dolan.

Nashville PD.

You're working with Rayna James, right?

What is it?

911 from her phone.

Location says it's her office.

Wayne, stop it! No!

Please let me go, Wayne!

You don't wanna do this!

Calm down... the police are gonna be here any second.

Wayne?

Drop the w*apon! Let her go now!

Rayna: No. No!

Drop the Kn*fe!

I am not gonna ask you again! Drop the w*apon now!

Freeze!

Drop it!

You gonna sh**t me?

Put that Kn*fe down! Put it down now!

No. They're not gonna sh**t you. I won't let them sh**t you.

Wayne, this is not who you are.

Think about it. This is not who you are.

Don't give in.

Put it down, buddy...

Put the Kn*fe on the ground. Let her go.

Please don't give in.

You need to decide who you really are, Wayne.

Wayne...

Wayne?

Let her go, pal. Come on...

I'm sorry... I'm sorry...

(Rayna sobbing)

Rayna: Wayne?

Wayne: I'm sorry...

Get out of the way! On the ground now!

Get down! Get down.

Stay down!

Are you okay? Did he hurt you?

Wayne: I'm sorry.

Rayna: (sobbing) No.

All right. I'll get him there.

Okay. We're gonna get you out of here, okay? Okay?

All right, get him up.

It's over.

You have the right to remain silent... anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

You have the right to speak to an attorney...

(Sirens wailing)

Ms. James, are you okay?

She's okay.

We just need to get her out of here.

We've got a squad car to take you to the hospital, okay?

I don't wanna go to the hospital. I just wanna go home.

(cell phone rings)

Hey, we been waiting on you.

(crying)

Baby, what happened?

(crying)

Rayna, what is it, sweetie?

Something terrible happened.

But it's okay, I'm okay. I'm okay...

I'm coming home.

Come home, baby.

(car horn honking)
