Previoulsly on "HEARTLAND"...

I know you're struggling with this decision about whether to take the scholarship or not, and I understand.

Well, I've decided.

[Sighs]

I'm gonna go.

I'm gonna miss you.

Yeah, me too.

You have to meet my daughter.

Uh, Peyton?

Lainy, meet Georgie.

So, how do you two know each other?

Oh, we just met.

Her trainer's the one who's been working with my horse.

Oh, you mean the one who thought he should be a rodeo bronc.

[Giggles]

I'm feelin' better, so I can be cautiously optimistic.

That's what Dr.

Virani told me.

We love you.

I love you.

[Hooves clop]

[Sighs]

[Riders chat quietly]

Woman: Okay, I think you're all warmed up, one more lap, and then bring it in.

Time to do the course.

[Phoenix huffs softly]

[Horses snort]

Peyton: Don't worry, he's not here.

Dylan.

He's out of town for a few days.

Oh, I wasn't worried about running into him or anything.

I just, I was looking for your mom, I wanted to thank her.

It's amazing she's letting me train here.

Yeah, I'll let her know.

She usually only lets family and close friends train in our arena, but...

I guess she made an exception.

[Sighs heavily]

[Gates clang, horse whinnies]

[Cows moo]

[Rope whooshes]

Tim: Yup!

Wait on the corner!

You're too tight!

See?

What'd I tell ya?!

Man: It was that close!

Hey, well, the header screwed up too, he slowed the steer on the corner.

What're you doing here?

Well, it's nice to see you, too.

You're supposed to be in Texas.

It's Thanksgiving weekend.

Right!

Good to see ya!

Hey...

You wanna stick around for the rest of the practice?

I could probably use your help.

Yeah, sure, these guys look like they could use a couple pointers.

Yeah.

Okay, guys!

Come on in!

Come on in here.

[Claps]

Listen up!

Look who's back.

Guys: Jade!

Hey, Jade!

Huh?

She's a big sh*t now.

On a rodeo scholarship at a big school in Texas, so if she's got any advice, listen to it.

Man: All right, we gotcha.

Okay, who's next?

LET'S GO.

Man: Oh, yeah.

Hey Jade, good to see ya.

Oh, hey!

Aww!

[Sighs heavily]

Oh?

What?

You all right?

Oh, I just got off the phone with Lou, and she can't make it home for Thanksgiving weekend.

What?!

Oh dear, well...

I mean, with Ty at the conference and now this, maybe we just put it off to another weekend.

No.

No.

We always have dinner on Thanksgiving Sunday.

It's tradition.

Okay.

Yeah, but Grandpa, Lou always cooks dinner.

And that's tradition.

Yes, and as I recall, she doesn't let anybody in the kitchen on that day.

We'll all pitch in.

We can make this work.

Right, Lyndy?

[Hooves thud]

Peyton: Come on, Tyson, let's go.

[Tyson snorts]

[Low whinnies]

[Hooves thud]

[Snorts agitatedly]

[Snorts, whinnies]

Whoa!

Tyson!

Easy, boy!

Watch out!

Andrew: Control your horse!

Whoa, Tyson!

Hey!

Oh!

Oh!

Ah!

Peyton: Whoa, whoa!

Woman: You all right?

Tyson!

Dammit!

Oh!

Whoa...

Do you want me to take him?

Yeah.

Oh my god, are you okay?

What is it with that horse?

I am so sorry.

[Breathing heavily]

I'm gonna lodge an official complaint.

To who?

You do know I live here, right?

You're training at my place.

Yes, I know your mother very well.

I'm an official with Equestrian Canada, and I'm not gonna let personal relationships get in the way of what I need to do.

What're you talking about?

I've seen this kind of behaviour from your horse before.

He's far too dangerous to have around other horses and competitors.

I'm gonna recommend he be barred from future shows.

[Shocked murmurs]

Are you okay?

That guy can't do that.

Tyson's an amazing jumper.

Yeah, well, he was great on course, But why'd he go after that other horse?

He was totally out of control.

It's all the other horses coming in and out of here.

My mom needs to stop letting just anybody into our arena!

So who's gonna make Grandma Lyndy's stuffing?

Well, I can give it a sh*t.

No, only Lou can make it.

Well, I can certainly follow a recipe.

No, there's no recipe.

Grandma Lyndy taught Lou how to do it when she was a little girl so she would carry it on.

I don't think Marion even knew the recipe.

But I don't see the point.

I mean, why bother?

I'm starting to feel better.

And she is, she's a big girl.

Oh good, but something happened.

To Phoenix?

No, no, he's great.

But you remember Peyton, right?

Um, Paula's daughter, right?

Yes, her horse totally blew up in the arena.

And then there was this Equestrian Canada official there that said he was gonna get him banned from competing.

Yikes, he must've been really out of control.

Yeah, but not on course, just around other horses.

Well, that's not good.

But there's something different about him.

I-I don't know, he seems like a really great horse, so I got thinking...

maybe you could work with him?

You made them realize what he was meant for.

No, I made them realize how they could make more money off him.

Okay, well, I-I just, I really think this horse could use your help.

Why do you all of a sudden wanna go out on a limb for Peyton?

I know, Peyton's not my favourite person, but believe me, I-I think she really cares about this horse.

Okay.

Well, have her bring the horse by, all right?

I will take a look at it, that is, if she wants me to.

You know Thanksgiving is Lou's big day.

Are you absolutely sure she's okay with us going ahead without her?

Maybe in a horse and a carriage.

Wyatt!

Fine.

One horse.

My Mustang.

But I'm gonna keep the top up to protect your hair.

See?

I'm classy now.

Very classy.

Nice.

Yeah.

[Nervous snorts, whinnies]

Tyson, easy.

Easy, easy.

Hey, hey, hey.

See how I'm taking control of the situation by circling him around?

I'm keeping his mind off the other horses.

There you go.

Easy, hey.

Hey.

[Tyson whinnies]

That's enough.

There we go.

The more I do this, the more he realizes that his behaviour won't be tolerated.

I'm just redirecting his energy.

Okay, so what're you saying, I'm the problem?

That's not the point.

There is no one to blame.

I just want you to see what's possible.

You can do this, okay?

You can take control of your horse in any situation, but you need to believe that.

[Sighs]

Hey.

Georgie.

You told Jade?

Why?

She was all over me.

She noticed the way you were acting before she left and...

she knew something was up, so she asked me point blank.

What was I supposed to do, lie about something this serious?

No.

No.

I just couldn't do it.

Georgie.

I'm sorry.

I-I shouldn'tve put you in that position, I should've told her myself.

[Horses huff and snort]

See, those horses aren't gonna hurt you.

Let's try that again.

[Tyson chuffs]

Hey.

Hi.

Amy's really good.

Yeah, I know.

Hey, so um, a couple of the girls from my riding club are gonna go out tonight, maybe make some junk food, and rent a bad movie, if you wanna join.

Oh, um, that sounds fun, but my boyfriend has this big dinner date planned.

Oh yeah?

Maggie's?

Uh no, a French restaurant in Calgary called "La Maison." Oh, really?

My parents go there a lot.

It's supposed to be incredible.

That's impressive.

Oh.

[Laughs]

Hey, Peyton, you wanna give it a try?

Yeah.

[Hooves clomp]

Amy: Okay, I want you to take it slow.

Walk Tyson as close to the other horses as you can.

[Panicked breathing]

Whoa, Tyson!

Don't let him do that, Peyton.

Take control.

Tyson!

Oh!

All right, circle him around.

Easy, buddy!

[Whimpers]

Peyton, you need to be confident in your commands.

He needs to know what you're asking him to do.

[Whimpers]

Whoa, buddy!

Peyton!

Easy, you're fine.

No, Amy!

You're okay.

You need to settle down.

Settle down.

Easy.

Whoa, boy.

[Tyson whinnies]

Easy.

Easy, Tyson.

There we go.

He needs to know that you're the boss.

Easy...

Whoa, Tyson.

[Tyson huffs]

Easy.

There you go.

Okay.

Easy, buddy.

Okay, once more.

No, forget it!

I'm done!

Peyton, come on.

You did it!

No, you did.

If you weren't there, he probably would've att*cked your horse.

I completely froze up again.

Okay, don't be so hard on yourself.

It's not easy to change the dynamics of any relationship, but we'll get there, right?

I can help put Tyson in the trailer, if you want.

Okay, thanks.

[Sighs heavily]

Hey!

How's it goin' with that jumping horse?

Well, I thought we were making progress, but then he just blew up again.

Oh?

I just hope I'm not pushing them too fast, you know?

How do you mean?

Well, the horse has aggression issues with other horses.

And I think it stems from the rider's lack of confidence and her frustration with him.

So I tied a bunch of our horses off in a pen, and just threw them in.

Where'd you get the idea to do that?

I read it in mom's journal.

I'm not surprised.

You know what horse she used that idea with the first time?

Paint.

Really?

Yeah, he had the same issues when he was young.

Huh.

I...

I didn't even know that.

Yeah, well, it had got to the point where I wanted to spur the hide right off him, make him know who's boss.

Grandpa!

I know.

I know.

That's exactly how your mom felt.

So she did this exercise where you tie the horses off in the pen.

Did it work?

Not at first.

He was pretty high strung.

I was frustrated, but...

well, funny thing.

Once I calmed down, Paint calmed down.

So you think I'm goin' about this the right way?

Well, it sure worked for me and Paint.

I guess I should know better than to...

question Mom's ideas, right?

Or your own.

[Chuckles]

Okay, I'm here, what do you wanna tell me?

All right, first, I wanna apologize.

But Jade, I hope that you can understand why I didn't say anything.

I've been waiting for test results.

I figured, why tell anyone anything unless the news is bad?

But my symptoms are getting better, everything's starting to point in the right direction.

Your mother even said so herself.

Okay, but what if this thing in your brain, what if it's really bad?

And what if it doesn't go away?

And what if I never found out?

And you set this whole thing up, and you pushed me as far away as possible.

And how do you think I would've felt if I was in Texas, clueless, having the time of my life, while you're back here, possibly...

Dying.

Yeah, I-I didn't think it through.

Yeah, I never would've forgiven myself!

[Footsteps thud]

[Cars rumble distantly]

[Diners chatter]

[Soft music plays]

Thank you.

Thanks.

[Sighs]

Wow.

This place is...

fancier than I expected.

You know, even Peyton was impressed you were bringing me here.

Sounds like you guys are getting pretty friendly.

Um, no, I wouldn't go that far.

But I think I'm starting to see a whole new side of her.

Maybe there's more to her than meets the eye.

Bonjour, welcome to "La Maison." May I suggest the chef's inspired three-course meal this evening?

It starts with a choice of a house salad, or our delicious butternut squash soup, followed by bruschetta and canapes, and finally, a beautiful filet mignon for your entree.

Wow, I don't think I've ever had any of that before, but it all sounds so good.

Excellent choice, mademoiselle.

With the soup or salad?

The soup, please.

And for you?

Um...

the salad.

With the three-course meal as well?

No, just-just the salad, please.

Can I get you both started with something to drink?

Um, I'll have the Italian soda, please.

Just water, please.

Sparkling or still?

And for monsieur, the salad.

It really does, doesn't it?

Nope, she's out with Wyatt tonight.

Oh, too bad.

I need her advice about Jade.

Oh, just like you wanted our advice the other day?

Well, Georgie knows Jade better than anybody.

So you are gonna tell her.

Nope.

Georgie already told her.

And now Jade's angry with me for not telling her first.

Did you not learn anything from the fact that Georgie didn't hear the news from you directly and they're, they're best friends?

You must've thought she would tell her at some point.

I thought I was doing the right thing.

What, you don't want an after-dinner mint?

No, I've got some in the car.

What?

Seriously?

Yeah, yeah, come on.

[Sighs]

[Sighs heavily]

Let's go.

Hey...

What's up with you?

You're acting so weird.

No, it's just getting late, you know, and um...

I know Jack keeps track of that sort of thing.

Watch out.

[Door slams]

Georgie: Wyatt!

Hey!

[Tires screech, engine revs]

Hey, get back here!

You didn't pay!

Hello, Jade.

Jack.

Thanks for coming by.

I, uh, I understand you're pretty upset with Tim.

Yeah.

Of course I am.

And maybe you have good reason to be.

But...

I wanna say something here.

Tim doesn't know if this is just some little shadow on an x-ray that's gonna go away on its own, or if it's something that could be...

well, you know the scenario.

Yeah, well, that's exactly why he should've told me.

Yeah, maybe.

I had a health scare in the past, so I know how it can affect you, and everyone around you.

You feel this responsibility to...

to protect the people that are close to you, and...

well, sometimes, you make mistakes.

Now, keeping this from you, was probably one of 'em.

But I can tell you this for certain.

His heart was in the right place.

He was only doing what he thought was best for you.

He cares, Jade.

He cares a lot.

Well, so what should I do?

You might start by trying to see this through his eyes.

[People chatter]

I can't believe we dined and dashed.

I know, and for the millionth time, I'm so sorry.

I-I had no idea how expensive it was gonna be.

And like I said, I went back this morning, and I paid the bill.

So humiliating.

I loved the dinner, and the flowers the other day, but...

where did you get all these crazy ideas that I'm into all that?

No, I know you're not.

It's just, you're my girlfriend now, and you're spending all this time in this world with like, a bunch of rich people.

Like Dylan.

So you're trying to keep up with a guy I don't even like?

I know.

It's stupid.

Yeah, it is stupid!

I like you because of the Wild West photo sh**t, and the road trips to gopher museums, and going on trail rides instead of formal dances.

I have so much fun with you, and I'm not in this for the things you can buy me.

Please, go back to being yourself.

Okay?

Okay.

So, since it's official that Lou isn't giving the recipe out...

What?

She said that?

No, she hasn't said anything at all.

Oh well, she didn't get your text, then.

It says "delivered" right beside it.

So I went ahead and I bought these, and this is how we're doing it this year, and it's gonna be great.

No, just give her a call, Lisa.

I don't want it to be any more awkward than it is!

Well, I don't see how it can get any worse than this!

You know, you have dreamed up this scenario for why Lou won't give you the recipe, and you haven't even talked to her yet!

Okay, I will, I'll text her again.

No, Lisa!

Call her.

Amy: That looks great.

Just keep that forward momentum.

That's the positive thing we wanna reinforce.

Don't let him pay attention to the other horses.

[Hooves thud]

Georgie: Hey.

Hey.

How's it goin'?

Pretty good, actually.

Peyton seems to have a much better connection with him today, and he's not even reacting to the other horses.

He feels like a different horse.

That's because you're a different rider.

Thanks.

Hey, can we go back to my place?

I wanna show the equestrian official that Tyson's a safe horse.

Do you mean today?

Well, yeah, maybe he hasn't lodged his complaint yet.

Sure, but I don't know how you're gonna get him to come out there at such short notice.

Never underestimate my mother, She can be uh...

persuasive.

[Gate clangs]

I hope you have some top flight broncs here today.

I'm staying, so you better have some stock that's up to my new standards.

[Sighs]

Okay, you can train with us today.

But Jade, you and I both know that you need to go back to Texas.

No, actually I don't think that's what I need.

The school is fine, but I like U of C more.

And the competition is just as good here, and if you wanna know the truth about that coach, he's good, but you're better.

Jade...

No.

I've made up my mind.

And I wanna be a part of this again.

And if you really want what's best for me, then you won't get in the way of that.

[Horse whinnies loudly]

All right, then.

So as luck would have it, I have a nasty bronc right here.

Stubborn as a son of a g*n.

I think he'd be a perfect fit for you.

Andrew: Okay, what have you got?

Thank you for coming out.

I know that you're gonna see a big improvement.

Well, I have to warn you, I'm not a person easily swayed.

Especially from what I've seen from that horse in the past.

Wait...

see?

He's not even reacting to the other horses.

[Tyson pants]

[Door bangs, horses whinny]

Amy: Hey, Peyton!

Oh no.

Circle him!

It's okay.

Easy, Tyson.

Amy: Nice!

Easy, boy.

[Laughs]

Did you see that?

Yeah!

You were amazing, you both were.

They've come a long way, haven't they?

Yeah, they have.

So what'd you guys do, sedate him?

No, we didn't.

Peyton has learned how to control her fear, and in doing so, Tyson now completely trusts her.

So...

will you reconsider?

Yeah.

I'll hold off filing a report for now.

But I'm gonna keep an eye on that horse.

That's fine, we got this.

No, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions.

Yes, I do, I have it all.

I know, we're gonna miss you, too.

Okay.

Yep, okay, bye.

[Phone beeps]

I have it!

[Laughs]

Have what?

That was Lou.

She didn't even get my text, and she said she certainly would've given me the recipe right away, 'cause I've been in the family for so long, and she thinks I'm great in the kitchen.

She actually said that.

Nice!

Yeah, and she thinks that I am the one that should share in the secret of the recipe.

Well, I think that is beautiful.

Yeah, me too.

So, let's get started.

Oh!

Oh!

No, no!

These are for my eyes only.

What?!

Yeah!

It's tradition, haven't you heard?

Thanks for everything, Amy.

Georgie was right, you're amazing.

Well, you were willing to put in the work, that's the most important part.

You gotta keep it up, though.

I will.

I have to say I'm impressed.

Thanks.

And thanks for being so cool about this.

I feel like I don't really deserve it.

I wasn't very welcoming to you at first.

Don't worry about it.

No!

I plan on making it up to you.

And I'm gonna start by letting you in on something.

Deal?

Thanks for having my back.

That's what friends are for.

Hey, got your text.

What was so urgent?

I bought you something, for Thanksgiving.

I thought we were gonna stop with the expensive stuff, and...

I saw it at a craft store, and I couldn't resist.

And it was only a $1.99.

Can you believe that?

I love it!
