...I've been thinkin' about my dad a lot lately.

[SPITS]

Maybe it's bein' away from you, my heart, my everything,

that my thoughts now drift to family.

Because, truth be told, my family wasn't together

nearly as long as I would've liked.

I suppose I could say the same thing now.

Even though he wasn't always around,

There's one thing he told me

that I carry particularly close.

people deserve to live in a world

where they know which way is up,

but they can't know that until someone helps 'em know it."

That's why he became a cop.

Same reason I did.

[BELL CHIMING]

When Ginny tasked me with stepping back into that role,

I had my reservations.

You more than anyone could understand why,

given how things played out the last time I wore a badge.

But this feels different.

♪♪

Life here is not as I imagined.

♪♪

People give up some freedoms to live behind these walls,

but, by and large, I'm startin' to believe

it might just be worth the cost.

[CHUCKLES]

[BELL CHIMING]

Haven't lost a soul on these grounds

since before I arrived.

There's comfort in knowin' that I play a part in that.

It's not the world my dad dreamed of,

I warned Cameron about his drinkin' more times than I can count.

One of our rangers wound up dead, tangled up in the barbed-wire fence.

Ginny thinks it's an accident.

It's too soon to say, but I'd be lyin' if I said I didn't have my doubts.

There are certain matters on which I seem to have her ear.

Well, I don't got anything worth listening to at the moment, but if that changes, I'll be sure to let you know.

I don't have a letter for you.

Well, that's not what I'm here for.

I wanted to talk to you about Cameron.

Well, I know that he ended up tangled in the fence with the passed making short work of him.

What I don't know is how or why.

Well, I went back to Cameron's house.

Now, I thought we already discussed this.

We did, but that fence, situated as it is to the back door, it's not exactly stumblin' distance.

It is if you're sauced.

I don't think he was drunk.

I found a bottle of moonshine in his house.

He hadn't touched a drop.

What if he ended up in that fence by other means?

What if he was pushed?

[SIGHS]

Well, I found this in the dirt when the rangers moved the body.

I bet whoever has the matching one of that is the person we're lookin' for.

[TICKING CONTINUES]

There was a man in the first place I lived after the puzzle went to pieces.

m*rder*d his friend over a can of tuna.

Town's elders decided to make a show of things to keep everyone in line, so they tied the k*ller to a stake outside the walls... and blasted music to draw in the dead.

I'll never forget what that man's body looked like the day after.

Picked clean to the bone, like a turkey on Thanksgivin'.

I don't want that for Lawton.

No, neither do I, but you're talking about punishment, and we don't even know if this is a crime yet, and... and we won't until we look further into it.

[TICKING CONTINUES]

I appreciate if we kept this quiet.

Place is only as safe as people feel it is.

Well, makin' people feel safe is good.

Actually makin' them safe, that's better.

JACOB: There's a word in Hebrew, "tzedakah", which we use to describe charity, not the kind of goodwill-giving we typically think, but a higher calling, the need to do what is right and just.

From the day he turned up at Lawton's gates,

Cameron answered the call, faithfully serving his community and making it a safer place until his very last breath.

His life is a reminder... when we dedicate ourselves to tzedakah, to justice and righteousness, we become citizens worthy of the world we inhabit and goodness then will prevail.

I found this in Cameron's house... under a mattress.

Ginny's had it out for me since Tom and I refused to kiss her ass back at Paradise Ridge.

I know how it looks, but I just need to do a bit more due diligence.

There's other people I could talk to, and, hell, I didn't even get a chance to properly inspect the body.

What were you gonna do, dust him for prints?

I know you don't wanna believe Janis did this, but I think you need to ask yourself if that's comin' from intuition or because you don't wanna lose your carrier pigeon.

Cameron wasn't k*lled by the passed at the fence.

How did you discern that fact from this charnel pit?

He must've got chewed up when the passed were trying to get at me.

Not by choice.

Even if Virginia wanted to get to the bottom of whatever this is, your evidence was chewed up and spit out.

I found this in Cameron's hand.

From the pattern, I think it's from the grip on a Kn*fe handle.

Must've broken off when he was tryin' to stop whoever was attackin' him.

What does this prove, given our current predicament with Janis?

The way Virginia keeps weapons on lock-down,

Janis couldn't have gotten a Kn*fe out of there without us knowin' about it.

So who would?

It spoils everything it touches, sooner or later.

She's set to be ex*cuted at daybreak.

[SIGHS]

I just spoke to her as her officially-sanctioned spiritual advisor.

She's a brave woman facing a cowardly act.

I always been one to follow the rules.

Maybe 'cause the rules always made sense to me.

But, ooh...

You thinkin' of runnin' away?

Janis wants me to.

[SIGHS DEEPLY]

But I ain't gonna do it.

There's only a few rangers on tonight during the shift change.

My dad... he had a case, when I was just knee high.

Women were goin' missin' in the Houston area.

Bodies showin' up miles away.

The term didn't exist then, but I suppose the fella doin' it is what we'd call a serial k*ller.

Detectives found him livin' on this compound out in the desert with a bunch of people he brainwashed into thinkin' he was the second comin' or somethin'.

Really, he was just some two-bit mortician spoutin' on about death and new beginnings, just... just a bunch of nonsense dressed up to sound profound.

Well, they asked the local police force, my dad included, to search that place.

Everybody knew this guy was guilty.

They couldn't pin any of the murders directly to him, at least not with anything that would stick in court.

Then, my dad found somethin', a purse belongin' to one of the missin' women, squirreled away in the back of that guy's closet.

That was enough to put that sumbitch away for the rest of his life.

Sounds like your father was a hero.

He planted that purse.

He knew this man was guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt?

Yes, sir.

He broke the rules to set things right so that people could feel like they were livin' in a world where they knew which way was up.

The people that knew what my dad had done, his friends on the force, you know, they were happy to get a dangerous guy off the street, save the women he mighta hurt, that he woulda hurt, but they never looked at him the same way again.

It was like they weren't certain they could trust anything he did now.

Marriage to my mama fell apart.

He moved up north. He started drinkin'.

[SIGHING] God.

He did the right thing, and it cost him.

It cost him somethin' hard.

This is gonna cost you something, and you seem to know that.

[SIGHING] Yeah.

Yeah.

I ain't worried about me.

And I... and I trust Ginny not to hurt June,

'cause she needs people who know medicine.

But I... [SIGHS]

I know I'll never see her again.

And when my dad disappeared, that was hard on my mama.

That was hard on me.

But he had to do what he did.

I-I... It's who he was.

And I... I know... there's people alive today who probably wouldn't have been.

He chose life, even if it cost him the one he was living.

Yeah.

That's the choice I'm makin'.

John, [INHALES DEEPLY] we can find another way.

I can talk to her, buy more time.

Janis was always gonna take the fall.

We coulda got away!

Virginia would've hunted you down and k*lled you both.

[PANTING]

Janis was right.

This place destroys everything.

[BIRDS CHIRPING IN DISTANCE]

VIRGINIA: We're all after the same thing.

Not just in Lawton but in all the settlements of our great franchise.

Towns where people can feel safe and secure without fear of the dangers that lurk beyond.

A place we can call home.

Cameron's m*rder was a test for all of us, but I am proud to say civility's won.

Goodness has prevailed, all because of one man's dogged pursuit of the truth.

With good, decent men like him on watch, the future of our little enterprise is bright with promise.

You were a hero in our hour of need.

Please accept this small token of our gratitude... a key to the future, our future.

[APPLAUSE]
