NARRATOR: Previously, on Hardy Boys...

- [CLATTERING]
- CAPTAIN: I found it.

You said you'd pay more than the others.

I lied. [f*ring]

I was on your fishing boat. The Astghik.

I was the only one who survived.

LAURA: Where are you now?
Okay, stay there, and...

Um, I gotta go. The kids are ready.

Who was that?

LAURA: Oh, oh, oh.
Gosh, I almost forgot.

And if I don't, then you'll lose.

MRS. KHAN: Your wife was a journalist.

FENTON: Not in the last couple of years.

Fent, it's Laura.

GLORIA: Nobody understands, do they?

One minute they're there, then
the next minute, they're...

I need you boys to pack
up your stuff tomorrow.

We're gonna move to
Bridgeport for the summer.

BIFF: Where are you guys from?

Where are you from?

- Here.
- CALLIE: The fishing boat

that went down a couple weeks ago...

Your dad's a detective. Maybe he knows.

MRS. KHAN: To find your wife's k*ller,

it's a trail that must be followed.

FRANK: We gotta help Dad.

We're gonna find out
what happened to Mom.

[DINGING]

CAPTAIN [ON INTERCOM]:
Ladies and gentlemen,

this is your captain speaking.

We'll be starting our descent shortly,

and we'll have you at the
gate, uh, in about minutes.

- MAN: Excuse me, miss? Hey, miss?
- Mm-hmm?

- Can I have another one, please?
- Of course.

- Would you like a cup?
- No, I... I got one.

- There you go.
- Thank you.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT: Anything over here?

Nervous flyer.

[POURING]

[DINGING]

CAPTAIN: Ladies and gentlemen,

we are going to be passing
through some rough air,

so I am turning on the seat belt sign.

Please return to your
seats and remain seated

until the seat belt
sign is switched off.

Can't...

Can't...

I can't breathe.

[GRUNTS]

[GRUNTING]

- FLIGHT ATTENDANT: Sir.
- I just, I need my, uh...

... inhaler.

Sir, I need you to sit down, please.

It's fine, it's fine.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT: Oh. Oh!

Oh, are you all right, sir?

MAN: I'm... I'm okay.

Sorry.

- Sir, you should probably take a seat...
- I'm okay.

Just gonna use the bathroom now.

Excuse me. Just gotta
take some medication.

[DOOR SLAMS] [SIGN CLACKS]

[WATER RUNNING]

Sir, let me help you.

Uh, please let me, sir.

[UNZIPPING]

The seat belt sign is on.
You have to take a seat...

He took my bag.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT: Sir.
Sir, please. Have a seat.

[DOOR RATTLING]

- Sir, please sit down.
- Open the door.

- But there's someone in there right now.
- [DISTANT WHOOSHING]

- [GRUNTS]
- [DOOR CLATTERING]

[GRUNTS]

He's in the hold.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT:
We're de-pressurizing.

[AIR HISSING]

The fat suit was the parachute.

- How'd you not get that?
- We all got that.

The guy got on a plane
with this fake mustache,

and then jumped off at , feet.

- Are you guys hearing this?
- Hey, Phil.

Chill.

- Who invited this kid?
- I live here.

And you're like a year older than me.

And then he just vanishes?

How does nobody see where he landed?

JOE: I don't know. Maybe
he's a spy or something.

- Or a superhero.
- FRANK: Or a fugitive.

If he wasn't before,
then he sure is now.

CHET: Maybe he was just
crazy, and wanted a way out.

He wasn't crazy. He knew
exactly what he was doing.

What?

I mean, he waited for
the plane to be low enough

so there'd be oxygen when he jumped out,

and he was smart enough to
get a parachute on board.

He got on that plane to do
something. Something important.

And jumping was the only
way for him to escape.

CHET: His dad's a detective.

That's not genetic.

Okay, I know where you guys come
from, everybody's a criminal,

but this town sees a little
less action than that.

JOE: Really?

'Cause we've only been here a week,

and I've already had somebody
hold me at Kn*fe point.

CHET: Ern's not a bad guy...

I went to school with the kid.

He wouldn't hurt anybody.
He was just scared.

Yeah. Of what?

FRANK: Joe, come here.
Come look at this.

This is from Mom's pad.

She wrote this the day that she d*ed.

- Astghik?
- CHET: Astghik.

Isn't that Ern's boat?

Yeah. Why would she
even care about that?

Do you have any idea where
Ern might have run off to?

FENTON: Don't even think about it.

He held a Kn*fe to Joe, Dad.

That's right. That means he's dangerous.

That means you're not going after him.

The police will take care of it.

Do you mind letting me out?

Yeah, yeah.

On your way to the airport, Mr. Hardy?

FENTON: I have to, uh, pick
up a few things for my trip.

- Hey, Chet. Wait up.
- CHET: Yeah.

[CAR DOOR OPENS]

Can you help me out with one more thing?

What, you got more boxes to move?

[CAR DOOR CLOSES]

No, I wanna tail my dad.

[CAR ENGINE STARTS]

Fen. [LAUGHS]

Thanks for making the drive, Sam.

- Of course, man. Whatever I can do.
- [SIGHS]

- Did you find anything?
- Not much.

But enough to make me think
that you need to be careful.

CHET: So, who's this guy?

FRANK: It's my dad's old partner.

What do you think they're talking about?

I bet it's undercover stuff.

Like dirty cops and dope dealers.

I looked in on the woman who
hired you to find her nephew.

She's Kanika Imani Khan.

Ultra-rich, supporter of the arts,

- and education...
- And the part that's not in the papers?

Nobody knows where the money came from.

She's got her finger in a lot of pies.

Ties to some dodgy
politicians, organized crime...

Nothing conclusive, but...

But you think she's setting me up?

Fen, sometimes you
jump before you think.

Her nephew called Laura three times

from Bridgeport on the day she d*ed.

And then he got on an airplane.

I gotta do this, Sam.

All right.

Okay. We can go now.

[SIGHS]

[VIDEO GAME MUSIC PLAYING ON TV]

Anybody know where my passport is?

TRUDY: Um, upstairs on
the table in the hall.

JOE: Where are you going?

- We're in the middle of a game!
- Shh!

- Can you open this?
- I can open anything.

This'll work.

- Is this about Mom?
- I think so.

You think, or you know?

I think. I mean, I'm not sure.

I saw Dad talking to
his old partner today.

What were they talking about?

Well, I don't know. If I knew that,

we wouldn't be breaking
into his briefcase, would we?

Dad's gonna k*ll us if he
finds out we were in his stuff.

Okay. Then go keep watch.

What is it?

It's the woman who hired Dad. Mrs. Khan.

He's coming. Close it.

[FENTON SIGHS]

What's all this?

Ah. Always travel in a suit.

They treat you better.

- You look like Dad.
- [FENTON CHUCKLES]

Not possible, because Dad was old.

Okay, boys.

Looking good, Dad.

Are you gonna tell us what
you're doing over there?

Well, it's a missing person's case.

Hopefully I'll be back
on the plane by Friday.

It's a missing person who
talked to Mom the day she d*ed.

TRUDY: What's he talking about?

Boys, you know. They see a
mystery where there's none to see.

- I love you, Trudy. I'll call you when I arrive.
- [HORN HONKS OUTSIDE]

- You want to see me to the cab?
- Yeah.

FENTON: Okay. Tell me
what you think you know.

FRANK: The accident might
not have been an accident,

and it's got something
to do with these Khans.

JOE: She was investigating something.

Someone Mom was talking to on the phone.

Someone, someone who told her.

- Why aren't you telling us?
- FENTON: Whoa, whoa.

I don't know what happened
to your mother, all right?

Also, why were you spying on me?

- We weren't spying.
- Yeah. We just overheard something.

And we didn't move, so if
anything, we were just lazy.

Guys, the way that you're feeling...

I'm feeling that way, too.

And you're not gonna
like this next part.

If, and this is a very big if,

something happened to your mom,

then the best way I have of
finding out is to take this case.

If I can find this Rupert Khan, then...

he might know what she was
looking into that last day.

All right?

Come here. Bye, son.

- Look after your brother, okay?
- Okay.

Aw. [LAUGHS]

And, um, don't break
into my briefcase again.

- I told you that lock was no good.
- Mm? Ah.

[ENGINE STARTS]

JOE: Wait, wait, wait.

I brought you something to read
if you get bored on the plane.

- Oh.
- Captain Decay. The defender of debris.

The prince of putrescence.

[LAUGHS] It is one of my favorites.

That's good. I like that.
And I look forward to that.

Come here. [KISSES]

Bye, Dad.

[ENGINE RUMBLING]

[THEME MUSIC PLAYING]

All right. I'm full.

Here you go.

Try this. It's a secret concoction.

I don't know.

Come on. Who doesn't like floats?

What's in it?

A secret recipe.

Maple bacon.

Aah. What do you think?

- I think it's genius.
- [WILT LAUGHS]

- It's on me.

[POP SONG PLAYING]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER, LAUGHING]

Okay.

I've got a sandwich, too.

Oh, that's nice. Uh, $ . .

How much for that map on the wall?

Oh. The rest of your
twenty will be good.

You're ripping me off.

It's a classic.

Where'd you get twenty bucks?

A girl can't have a little
walking around money?

How far are you walking?

Keeping asking questions, you'll
talk yourself out of a free lunch.

- Shaving cream.
- [BELL ON DOOR JINGLES]

- Dads are pretty picky about that stuff.
- [DOOR CLOSES]

No dad. Just her and
her mom, Deputy Hooper.

Wilt, I gotta go. I'll see you later.

[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC PLAYING]

JB: You get the jerky?

Right.

What else you got?

Nice.

Good work.

Who's your friend?

What?

You can come out now.

And don't run.

I'm so sorry. I didn't
know he was following me.

Joe.

What are you doing here?

JOE: Shaving cream?

- Really?
- This is the last time I buy you lunch.

Why did you follow me?

I was looking for someone.

You and me both.

Who are you looking for?

You first.

What happened to your leg?

Well, I was on a boat. Went down.

Pretty sure I'm the
only one who made it off.

The Astghik?

That's right.

So you know Ern.

Ern who?

You weren't on any fishing boat.

Wait, wait. Ern? Ernie?

Yeah, of course I know
Ernie. How do you know him?

BIFF: He pulled a Kn*fe
on him on the other night.

Biff.

JB: He's probably
just as scared as I am.

Yeah, what happened
to him... Us... It's...

[SIGHS] Is he okay?

I don't know.

He ran off.

Okay. Look.

[CLEARS THROAT]

I jumped off the boat with this radio.

It's all busted, but
if I can get it fixed,

I can call somebody I can
trust to get off this beach.

You any good with radios?

JOE: I'd have to get my tools.

Let me see what I need.

- What's your name?
- Joe.

Joe.

Can I trust you, Joe?

Can I trust you?

JOE: My bedroom's not a hardware store.

You're the one who butted into my deal.

So how'd you find this guy?

I was walking on the beach.

I saw his camp, and
started talking to him.

He offered me a month's allowance
if I get some stuff from the store.

You don't seem like a cop's daughter.

You don't seem like a cop's son.

What's your problem with him?

I just think there's more going on.

And I don't think he was on that boat.

Then why are you helping him?

'Cause I wanna find
out what he's hiding.

Well, I know he pays cash.
That's good enough for me.

- JOE: So who are you? Really?

JB: I was never on the Astghik. Okay?

I read about the story in the
paper a couple of weeks ago.

Thought it would make
a pretty good cover.

So what are you, like,
a spy or something?

Or a smuggler?

[CHUCKLES]

something you choose to have.

JB: That sounds correct.

I'll tell you what. This works out,

you can tell your mom she was right.

She's dead.

I'm sorry, kid.

Hey, can you call the Coast Guard,

get me whatever
information you can find out

about that fishing boat that went down.

The Ast... Ast something?

I'm going to the Dundurin Hotel.

[FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]

Chet, come in.

[STATIC] Chet.

Chet, you need to get out of there.

[FOOTSTEPS THUDDING]

FRANK [OVER RADIO]: Chet, come in.

Chet, can you hear me?

- Frank, what'd you say?
- Chet, do you read me?

- Chet, you need to get out of... now.
- Frank!

Someone's coming. Chet,
if you can hear me,

- get out, now.
- [STATIC]

Frank, who's coming?

[FOOTSTEPS THUDDING]

[CLATTERING]

[METAL CLANGING]

[CRASHING, CLATTERING]

- [BIRDS CAWING]
- [INSECTS CHITTERING]

[WAVES LAPPING]

[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC PLAYING]

[BREATHING HEAVILY]

He's gone.

- [CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYING ON STEREO]
- [FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]

GLORIA: Trudy. What are you
doing here? Is everything okay?

No, Gloria. It's not.

Fenton left the boys in my care,

and I don't appreciate you
stepping in and over me.

Trudy, I was just excited to see them.

Well, where are they? They said
they'd be home for dinner tonight.

Well, they're not here.

They've been gone all day.

Trudy, darling, you don't
have children of your own.

If... if they don't
know who the boss is,

they'll just run circles around you.

Perhaps it's not the worst idea
for the boys to stay with me

until Fenton gets back, hmm?

[SCOFFS]

[DOOR SQUEAKING]

[WHISPERS]: Did you just get home?

- Maybe.
- Where were you?

JOE: You first.

[DOOR OPENS]

- Oh, you're home.
- Shh, shh, shh, shh.

My Aunt Trudy's downstairs.

- What are you doing here?
- I needed to get off that beach.

What happened with the drop?

Yeah, about that.

Joe?

I did what you asked.

But...

But what?

The chief of police sat at the
bench and picked up the envelope.

- What?
- Shh!

That's not ideal, Joe.

- I still did exactly what you said.
- You sort of did what I said.

Eighty bucks.

You better split this with your friend.

Don't be greedy. It's all there.

I went back to your campsite.

Pretty smart using a
parachute as a tent.

What can I say?

You're the guy that
jumped out of that plane.

You're a fugitive.

Guilty.

You're a smart kid.

And also an accomplice,

just in case you were maybe
thinking about turning me in.

What'd you steal?

The less you know, the better.

Okay?

Keep it that way.

You did good.

- [GRUNTS]
- Your leg looks a lot better.

Does it?

[JB GRUNTING]

[LATCH CLICKS]

[SIGHS]

- [CRICKETS CHIRPING]
- [DOG BARKING IN DISTANCE]

Your dad trusted me to look after you.

To keep you safe.

[SCOFFS] I can't do that if
I have no idea where you are.

FRANK: Sorry, Aunt Trudy.

So...

Where were you?

Uh, I went to that old hotel.

'Cause I really like
historical buildings.

[SIGHS]

JOE: And I was at the beach.

Uh, I never thought I'd be a beach guy,

but there's still some summer left.

[CHUCKLES]

Seriously? You guys are
gonna keep lying to me?

- I'm not lying to you.
- We were... I was actually at the beach.

Okay. I'm in charge
while your dad is away.

Do you understand?

So, be easy on me, okay?

- Okay.
- I'll let you know when I'm tanning.

[FRANK CHUCKLES]

A box of your mom's things came today.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

I don't think you should open it.

But I'm not gonna stop you.

- Open it.
- You open it.

Why should I open it?

'Cause Dad says we shouldn't
go through his stuff.

It's not Dad's stuff. It's Mom's stuff.

The Strange Tales of Bridgeport.

It's from the library here.

Joe, Mom signed this out
the day that she d*ed.

What was she doing in
Bridgeport? Why would she be here?

- There's pages missing.
- What are they?

"The Tragedy at Demon's Paw"?

Never heard of it.

Okay. Here's what Dad would do.

So, what do we know
about Mom's death so far?

The day she d*ed, she was
talking about that boat that sank.

- JOE: The Astghik.
- FRANK: Right. With Rupert Khan.

JOE: The nephew of the
lady that hired Dad.

- FRANK: To find him.
- JOE: And there's the symbol from Mom's notes.

FRANK: This is the symbol
Ern found on the box

that they pulled out of
the water from the boat.

Okay.

We just have to figure out
how this is all connected.

'Cause I know it is.
