I'm not late, Melissa.

You've got less than five minutes.

You know, maybe she ran away.

You think she left her phone so she couldn't be tracked?

Beth's 15 years old, not Jason Bourne.

Wow, I guess movie night's paying off.

If Beth didn't run away, someone she's close with could have her.

What do we know about the family?

GREGORIO: Beth's mom has been a helo pilot and squadron commander for five years.

Spotless record, zero complaints, no access to m*llitary secrets that might make her a target.

Yeah, her other daughter, Simone, she works as a paralegal at Esparza and Sons in contract litigation.

She keeps mostly to herself.

August 2005 happened.

Katrina.

We lost our home, our savings.

We were broke with an 11-year-old and a baby on the way.

Painful times.

Simone and I kept our heads up, marched on, but for Frank...

Not so easy?

He felt betrayed by FEMA's response.

By the government.

Frank quit the Army a few months later, right after Beth was born.

Said we could only rely on ourselves.

He moved us to Folsom, built a cabin.

What little money we had left we used for canned goods baby food and g*ns.

Well, that's a big change.

With a newborn.

I'm guessing you weren't completely on board.

I tried.

I wanted to believe in him.

But his paranoia, isolation, it took a toll, especially on Simone.

So after a year, I took the girls and left.

I filed for divorce.

Frank got joint custody?

He fought hard for it.

He appeared at the hearing representing himself.

He is nothing if not persuasive.

So, the girls spent weekends up there, at least until Simone got older and refused to go back.

She's not his biggest fan?

It's hard to blame her.

She lost the dad she'd grown up with.

What about you?

Do you know of anything that may have set her off recently?

That may have prompted her to run?

Yeah.

Well, so do I.

You found something?

Yeah, I did, and you'’re not gonna like it.

So, Patton searched all the traffic cam footage and spotted this SUV.

Pulled out of City Park a few minutes after Beth'’s disappearance.

Yeah, well, those windows are pretty dark.

Exactly.

But I had an idea.

I used a infrared filter to pierce the tint.

Beth.

She didn'’t run.

She was abducted.

Claire.

Have you heard from her?

No, not for a few days.

Where have you been?

You promised you'’d always be reachable.

She'’s not even with me yet.

You said you have an update?

GREGORIO: Yeah.

Why don'’t you have a seat?

I'’m good.

PRIDE: There's no way to put this lightly.

We've discovered footage that confirms Beth was abducted.

Oh, my God.

By who?

Not sure yet.

Appears to be a professional crew.

[sighs]

Coordinated.

Which is why we need you both to think.

Is there anyone you can think of that might have a grudge with the family or Beth?

Like enemies?

No.

Well, that'’s a quick answer for a complicated question.

It'’s an easy answer for me.

How about you, Frank?

Oh, you think this is my fault?

I didn'’t say that.

Because, if anything, this is on you.

How the hellis this on me?!

Okay, guys, settle down.

FRANK: You'’re the one who insisted on raising her in the city.

Staying connected to the world.

Connections lead to problems.

What connections?

She'’s homeschooled because of you.

She barely has friends because of you.

She hardly even goes out.

Except to run.

Which is when she got taken.

I told you this city isn'’t safe.

Okay, that's enough.

All that matters right now is that we figure out who took Beth and we get her back.

All right.

I want to help with the search.

Great.

Then we need you to cooperate with us.

What can we do?

We need permission to tap your phone in the event of a ransom demand.

Ransom?

Yeah, that's most likely the next step.

So, what, we just sit around and hope for the best?

I know it'’s hard.

But I promise you that my team and I will do everything we can to bring Beth home.

[crying]

Oh, my God.

Hey.

Hey.

Yeah, okay, thanks.

That was NOPD.

They just expanded their search grid.

Still no sign of that mystery SUV.

Well, we may not know where the SUV is, but I was able to track the plates back to where it came from.

It was rented using a corporate account.

Who does the account belong to?

Uh, some company called Recovery Multinational.

Professional kidnapping business.

Is that a thing?

HANNAH: Yeah, sure.

Privately-funded agencies that specialize in the recovery of children or adults.

Say a disgruntled father flees the country with his child.

Even with the Hague Convention, mom is facing a bureaucratic uphill battle trying to get her kid back.

So she hires Recovery Multinational.

They tend to operate overseas, though.

Well, who would hire a company like this to snatch Beth?

We need to get in touch with them to find out.

MAN: I oversee every operation my agency takes on.

I can assure you we don'’t operate in the States.

We have a rental car agreement that says otherwise.

Recoveries on U.S. soil carry hefty legal ramifications.

Like the ones you'’ll face if you don'’t come clean with us.

An SUV used in the abduction of an American teenager in broad daylight was rented in New Orleans using one of your agency'’s corporate accounts.

You said broad daylight.

HANNAH: That'’s right.

Mid-morning.

That'’s not our style.

We specialize in surgical recovery.

Oh, well, I'’m sure you'’re just perfect every time.

[chuckles]

Bear with me.

I did have one agent who was... problematic.

Joel Cadiff.

He was one of my best.

But he's not anymore?

He specialized in complicated jobs.

Willing to take risks.

But he was increasingly reckless.

So you let him go.

Is it possible that Joel Cadiff may still have access to your company accounts?

I have a lot of agents with access to that account.

Of course.

It'’s possible.

[door closes]

Well, I'’m as frustrated as you and the mayor are, Esme, but progress takes time.

It also takes action.

And without Dwayne in that room, you'’re the only other person who seems to get that.

[sighs]

I'm doing the best I can.

But I'’m only one voice, and it'’s like herding cats.

I'’ll see what I can do.

Thanks, Loretta.

[hangs up]

what are you doing?

Aren't those my things?

I'’m finally putting them to good use.

But don'’t worry, I'’m wiping all the memory clean.

Ah.

If this is your plan for the new Call of Duty, may I suggest a part-time job or the chores you'’ve been neglecting?

Mom, I'’m donating them.

Okay, let the record show my skepticism, but I'’m listening.

I'’m giving them to Bergeron Junior High, where I volunteer.

The after-school homework initiative?

Yeah, they'’re shutting it down.

COVID budget cuts.

[sighs]

That'’s disappointing.

Kids need the tablets it supplies.

You'’re giving them all of these?

Yeah.

A few of us from school are collecting them.

We need 30 to get every kid in the program one.

Hmm.

And this was your idea?

Why?

You think it'’s bad?

I think it'’s beautiful.

[chuckles]

GREGORIO: Hey.

Got you some coffee.

Usually, I draw my line at six cups a night, but, hey, it'’s a new day.

Why don'’t you head out?

Take a shower, relax.

I'’ll sleep when we get Beth back safe and sound.

Sebastian and I were up all night looking into Joel Cadiff, and nothing.

He's got no credit cards, no online presence at all.

Cadiff'’s former Mossad.

So, between cover identities and Israeli red tape, it'’s pretty tough to get anything besides basic work history.

[typing]

After Mossad, Cadiff was a g*n for hire.

Armed protection, hostage extraction.

He had a one-year stint as a security attaché for an Israeli foreign diplomat in Yokosuka.

Just doesn'’t add up.

Why would anyone hire a jerk like Cadiff with no ransom in mind?

She'’s 15 years old.

I don'’t even want to go there.

No, trafficking underage girls is-is lucrative.

It'’s a real possibility.

I know.

That's why I pray that you'’re wrong.

[phone dings]

HANNAH: West Baton Rouge Sheriff'’s department just found the SUV.

It'’s Cadiff.

Don'’t know how a kid could walk away from this.

Based on the footage we picked off a speed enforcement camera, the SUV went over the side about 11:00 a.m. yesterday.

Couple hours after Beth'’s abduction.

Looks like a standard accident.

High speed, lost control.

No, Cadiff was an experienced driver.

He wouldn'’t just lose control.

Unless something was going on inside that SUV.

Beth.

She really does take after her father.

All right, so I got good news and bad news.

Bad news is, obviously, is the crash and the dead suspect.

But the good news is that I think the other passengers escaped.

Looks like they broke the glass window from inside, maybe crawled out.

SHERIFF: Search and Rescue'’s on their way.

I'’ll have them start a grid search.

Thank you.

Now we got another problem.

[Pride sighs]

Keep working the scene.

CARTER: What are you doing here?

Followed you.

You shouldn'’t have.

She'’s my daughter.

And we got 30 cops handling it.

They handling this?

PRIDE: Footprints.

Three sets.

Including...

...Beth'’s.

Leading into the woods.

Okay.

We'’ll get on it.

But you need to go back to NCIS and wait for us.

I'’m not going anywhere.

My daughter'’s in trouble.

We know she'’s alive.

For now.

But there'’s no telling what they'’re gonna do to her.

CARTER: Frank.

This is our job.

Okay?

You need to step away.

Or else we'’re gonna handcuff you and take you back by force.

Okay.

Okay.

Let's have Sheriff Mott and his team start the search from down here.

They got a day's start on us, so they're gonna have to act fast.

All right, we'’ll check for stolen vehicles in the area.

We'll see if they'’re still on foot.

And we need to get Frank out of here before he does something stupid.

Yeah, that'’s gonna be a problem.

Changing your gait was a smart move.

You a hunter?

Uh, in a manner.

Marine Force Recon, five years.

Ah.

Hey, word to the wise.

If you really want to mask your tracks, tie leaves to the bottom of your boots.

I'm not going back with you.

It's not a choice, Frank.

All right, you need to stand down.

[sighs]

These guys are smart.

Those sheriffs are spinning their wheels.

And you can do better?

Already did.

Those footprints that I showed you-- decoys.

I found another set on the other side of the road.

These are the real ones.

From the way this one drags?

One of them's injured.

Okay, all right, we go back, we get everyone on track.

I'm going after my daughter.

I taught Beth everything she knows.

How to defend herself, and how to leave a trail if she got into trouble.

She's talking to me.

She's telling me where they're going.

I'm the only one who can stay on the trail.

Okay.

All right, but we do this my way.

Understood?

Yeah.

Come on.

CJ, I'm in a bit of a rush right now.

You can't say you have a surprise and then not tell me.

Please?

Okay, hold on.

What?

Where'd you get those?

[laughs]

Surprisingly, I'm not the only one who has old electronics gathering dust.

There's an entire box that belongs to Sebastian.

Mom, I don't know how to thank you.

Don't worry.

I have an idea.

We'll discuss over dinner.

Okay, bye.

Sebastian, you were able to identify the suspects?

Yeah, I was.

I also want it known for the record that it was very difficult to pull prints out of a wet, leather car interior.

Ah, duly noted.

Now, who...

I mean, I had to use this, uh...

this carbon-based black powder just to get partials, and it's, uh, an incredibly elaborate compound, you know, and it's very difficult to use because you have...

Do you know how amazing it is that you have the power to say shut up, but with only your eyes?

It's a gift.

Yeah.

Let me introduce you to our kidnappers: Alex and Matt Dixon.

Brothers?

Yeah, and partners in crime, apparently.

Extortion, aggravated kidnapping, attempted m*rder.

Yeah.

After their most recent prison stints, they transitioned into private security, but they're-they're glorified muscle for hire.

God, that poor girl is stuck with them.

We need to find her fast.

How many of these beads does Beth have?

A year ago, I made Beth a paracord bracelet, pulls apart into little pieces.

36 beads.

Oh, clever.

Hoped she'd never have to use it.

Beth seems very capable.

Yeah?

Well, I spent years training her.

Just the two of us out in the woods.

Only one in the family who was willing to learn, didn't think I was mad.

[short chuckle]

Two peas in a pod, huh?

Ah, we basically speak our own language.

[chuckling]: Really.

Yeah.

We, uh, created these safety phrases.

Got one for everything.

"Jelly Beans" means we're not alone.

Uh, "Unicorn" means scream.

Uh, "London Bridge" means...

Falling down?

Ah.

Doesn't really leave much time for dating and sleepovers, though, does it?

All that stuff is a waste.

I mean, come on.

A kid's got to be a kid, though, right?

You sound like my ex.

World's not made for kids.

It's chaos.

Have to be prepared.

You think I'm crazy, huh?

Just a little intense is all.

You want to know what else I am?

Right.

Katrina was a wakeup call for me.

I swore I'd never get caught off-guard again.

Paid off.

Yeah, living in the wild, estranged from your family.

Being ready for pandemics or civil unrest or a kidnapped daughter.

If that was the cost of keeping Beth and Simone safe, then, yes.

And I rest easy knowing I made the right call.

It's kind of lonely, though, huh?

Can be.

Frank.

More decoy footprints, huh?

Yeah.

Good eye.

Hey, we should call this in.

Oh.

Don't bother.

There's no way you're getting a signal out here.

Still can't reach Carter.

Any way you can track him in the woods?

Yeah, he's off the grid right now, but Sebastian's keeping track of his GPS.

In other news, I figured out Joel Cadiff's connection to Beth.

And?

Guess who he worked with during his time in Yokosuka, Japan?

Claire Hogan knew Cadiff?

They were friends.

She's been holding out on us.

Yup.

Alex and Matt Dixon.

Two of the men responsible for abducting Beth.

We believe that they still have her.

Have you ever seen these men before?

No.

Never.

How about...

Joel Cadiff?

We believe he coordinated the kidnapping.

I'm gonna caution you to think really hard before responding, Commander Hogan.

We know that you flew escort missions with Cadiff during his time as a diplomatic attaché in Yokosuka.

GREGORIO: Looks like you were real chummy.

Joel was a coworker, that's all.

Simone was in Japan with me that summer.

She can confirm that.

Maybe he thought you were more than friends?

Had some bad blood?

CLAIRE: Joel and I barely even saw each other the last month we were there.

And that was four years ago.

Why do this now?

How about you, Simone?

Did you know Cadiff?

Well, she and Joel only met a few times.

I'm not sure that's entirely true.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry.

[panting]

We couldn't let him win again.

Let who win?

Frank.

Simone.

What did you do?

You were gonna ley Beth stay with him for six months.

Do you have any idea what that amount of time would've done to her?

We had to get her away from him.

So, you and Joel?

Why him?

We started seeing each other in Japan.

Been together ever since.

We knew you wouldn't approve.

You and Joel did this together?

It was his idea.

He's the only one who understood what Frank did to me.

What do you mean, did to you?

He ruined my life.

He wrecked our family!

He became this crazy stranger, skinning animals and building booby traps.

That's no way to grow up.

I know it was bad, but he's better.

This is why I couldn't come to you.

You make excuses, and you gave up protecting Beth and me the day you agreed to share custody.

So you kidnapped your own sister?

Okay, let's save the family therapy for later.

We still have to find Beth, remember?

I-I just need to talk to Joel.

He was supposed to call.

GREGORIO: Mm.

Okay, Simone.

Let's you and I have a chat.

[sighs]

[gasps]

This wasn't supposed to happen.

All due respect, Simone...

you had your sister kidnapped.

What did you think was gonna happen?

That I'd get her to safety.

That Beth, Joel and I would find someplace nice to live.

Did you ever think to ask Beth what she wanted?

Well, but Frank brainwashed her.

She was becoming more like him all the time.

Somebody had to save her.

Well, all I really care about right now is getting her back.

How were you supposed to contact Cadiff?

He said... he said, the less I knew, the better.

He was supposed to contact me, set a meeting place.

Yeah, well, he's dead.

[whimpers]

What about his men?

You know how to reach them?

No!

No, I'm sorry.

God.

What are they gonna do to her?

Best guess?

They're gonna find a secure place, reach out to you.

I never should have agreed to this.

Joel said it would be easy.

He'd done it so many times.

God, what if I got her k*lled?

Let's focuson what we can do here.

[crying]

Why don't you give me your phone?

They're gonna call you, and When they do...

...I need you levelheaded.

For Beth.

SEBASTIAN:So I've been trying to trace the number that Cadiff's been using to communicate with Simone, but it's been offline since yesterday.

Probably a burner he dumped, yeah?

Running out of options here.

[ringtone playing]

Is that them?

Unknown caller.

Okay.

It's all right.

Go ahead.

Hello?

Do you have any idea what the hell we've been through?

Is my sister okay?

Your psycho sister got Cadiff k*lled.

Nearly k*lled us, too.

But is she okay?

Shut up and listen.

She's fine.

But if you want her to stay that way, we're gonna need money.

Joel should have paid you.

Joel's not running things anymore, and our price went up the second our car went off a bridge.

I can probably wire her...

A hundred grand.

Well, I...

I don't have that.

In cash.

I need to speak to Beth first.

Fine.

Say hi to your sister.

Simone.

Please.

They've got me in some...

[crying]

Beth!

Beth!

You have two hours to get the money.

Bring it to the old freight facility parking lot.

Come alone.

No.

SEBASTIAN: Had a ping, but it's only in the general area.

It looks like they're only a few miles away from the crash site, though.

Okay, well, Carter's still out there.

Try and reach him again.

All right, I'm on it.

So what now?

[sniffles]

We get them their money.

[whispers]: Hey.

[whispers]: Hey.

All right, we're gonna take it real easy.

All you need to do is just follow instructions.

And what are you gonna do?

Get your sister back.

[ringtone playing]

Hello?

I told you to come alone.

I'm the girl's father.

I could give a crap.

You want your money or not?

Keep walking.

Hands out the entire time.

[quietly]: Got eyes on him, Pride.

He's directly ahead of you.

Stop right there.

Drop the money.

We want to see Beth.

Money first, Dad.

Or you bury two daughters today.

That's far enough.

Where's Beth?

Safe.

As long as I am.

I leave...

you get another call.

No, no, that's not the deal.

It is now.

What are you gonna do about it?

I'm gonna tell you to lower your w*apon or the two federal agents behind you are gonna take you out.

On your knees!

Drop it or we sh**t!

Anything happens to me, my brother puts a b*llet in the girl's head!

Do it now!

[phone ringing]

It's my brother.

You want the girl alive, you let me walk.

Just lower the w*apon, and we will talk about it.

Stay here.

[engine revs]

Nowhere to go!

[phone continues ringing]

[continues ringing]

[ringing stops]

What are we gonna do?

Beth's still with that other guy.

He's gonna k*ll her.

We're gonna track him down.

We're gonna track him down.

[phone beeping]

And we'll find Beth.

[Simone crying]

carter may already have.

[phone vibrating]

MATT: Come on.

Come on.

Come on!

This is screwed.

This is so screwed!

[gasps]

[whispers]: No.

Hold on.

I'm going to get my daughter.

You're gonna get yourself k*lled, or you're gonna get Beth k*lled, okay?

Let me take the lead.

I have a plan.

Okay.

All right.

[line rings]

[hangs up]

My brother's not answering!

I'm gonna hurt you before I k*ll you.

You're not gonna hurt anyone.

[whimpering]

I'm a federal agent.

Hey, let Beth go.

Put the g*n down.

Where's my brother?

You listen to me!

I want to talk to my brother.

You let the girl go, surrender, and then you can talk to Alex.

I'll take my chances.

Okay.

All right.

You win, Matt.

I'm gonna lower the w*apon.

All right?

Now, I'm gonna get Alex on the phone for you, okay?

Do it now!

All right.

There's just one thing I need to say: London Bridge.

Hey.

You hurt?

How did you know about London Bridge?

Dad!

[Beth laughs]

[sobbing]

CJ: After spreading the word to other private schools, we were able to bring in over 200 laptops and tablets.

We think these donations might save Bergeron Junior High's homework initiative.

And that's my presentation.

Thank you, CJ.

Now, just to be clear, I didn't bring him in just to show off-- that's a fringe benefit.

Wouldn't blame you if you did.

He's a community organizer in the making.

The reason I asked CJ to share the work he and his friends have done is simple.

He found a problem within his power to fix, and fixed it.

Without the backing of city government, at that.

We've spent so much time circling huge, systemic issues that we've lost sight of the small steps it takes to achieve big changes.

So...

with that thinking, why not address housing equality?

We could start a small housing trust for our city.

Perhaps a volunteer program tasked with revitalizing neighborhoods.

Why not both?

Oh, that would be a lovely way to assist the underprivileged parts of the city.

REYES: We could start attracting volunteers using the chamber's resources.

Oh, Beth!

Thank God!

CLAIRE: Oh, Simone.

Baby!

Mom!

[crying]

I know you all think I'm crazy.

I wish it was that simple, but...

you're smart, Simone.

You always have been.

I just wanted what was best for Beth.

I know.

And the fact that you felt this was it breaks my heart.

[Beth and Claire continue crying]

CARTER: So, what's gonna happen with Simone?

She'll be charged.

Oh.

But since it was Cadiff's idea and...

she helped us get Beth back, we'll ask for leniency.

She needs professional help a whole lot more than she needs a jail cell.

And I thought my family dynamics were complicated.

This is such a nice idea.

We should do it more often.

[chuckles]

Appreciate y'all lending a hand restocking the food pantry.

Well...

the drinks are on you.

[laughs]

I really did miss this.

I heard about your presentation at the commission.

Sounds like you got the train back on track.

I was only the messenger.

CJ did all the work.

Well, let's not forget who raised that bright young man.

[chuckles]: Right.

When was the last time we were all here together like this?

Uh, a year, at least, maybe more.

Wait a minute.

Carter, have you ever been to the Trutone?

Come on, course I have.

Uh, strange.

I don't remember you gracing uswith your presence.

Hmm.

Now I'm reminded why I don't drink with you all.

Oh!

Oh, stop!

We're just playing.

[Sebastian whoops]

So sorry, Mr.

Sensitive.

Bibbity-boo.

Another?

Eh.

All that time in the woods, it really changes a man, right?

[chuckles]

You and Frank gonna be pen pals?

Actually, thinking about starting a podcast together.

Ah.

I'm glad that you made it out alive.

Why, did you miss me, Khoury?

Still breaking you in.

I don't want to start all over with a whole new agent.

See, now, this is the problem with getting personal.

Entanglements.

Expectations.

Mm.

You flirting with me?
