Not in the long term, but for now, it might be best for everyone's safety if she's returned to the artifact while I figure things out.

Don't worry, my dear.

Let me tell you a story.

A long time ago, there was a monster that lived in the woods.

One day it sought out a happy and magical village.

It was searching for something special there.

The monster wanted that thing so badly that it threatened to destroy the village to get it.

So the warriors gathered to defend their home.

But before they set out to battle, a muse used her powerful magic to get the warriors to fight with their words instead of their weapons.

So the warriors went into the woods to talk with the monster.

And the monster agreed to spare the village in exchange for what it wanted.

What did the monster want?

What happened to you?

You are acting like a completely different person.

You couldn't possibly understand what I've been through.

How can I understand if you haven't told me what's happened?

After we had sex, I was trapped in Malivore for what felt like years, and I kept telling myself that any minute now, Hope will show up and save me.

I had to fight the Necromancer to escape.

I had to fight my way out of the darkness, only to be stuck in a prison world full of monsters with no one to help me.

It wasn't about waiting for you to rescue me anymore, it was about surviving.

So I learned how to fight.

And k*ll.

And every day I woke up to do it all over again.

But you found a way out.

So, Malivore forced you to create monsters just so he could eat them?

He was hungry and desperate by design, in accordance with the spell that created him.

He so acutely wanted to escape his imprisonment that he imprisoned me, believing that I would be his salvation.

How?

(FIRE CRACKLING)

CLEO: I spent many years alone. I longed for my family, but my only choice was to make friends. Monsters, some would call them. But Malivore continued to consume each one, until one day, inspiration returned the favor and smiled upon me. I would create a vessel for Malivore.

It would not only be his salvation, but mine, too.

You inspired Malivore to want a vessel.

I am the one who gave him the solution to his hunger problems.

The idea that he has obsessed over for centuries.

And what he still wants today.

Vampires, witches, werewolves, then I will create a superior species of my own making to take their place.

This is just the beginning of our story.

However long it lasts, this vessel will be the last comfort my gifts will ever bring you.

No, I was fighting a wolf that ambushed me.

Why did you make a golem of Landon?

And more importantly, why did you try and k*ll Hope?

You already know that answer.

Then show me.

Why should I even bother?

Because I need to see it.

And I think that's something you know.

So, please, if you will.

Please.

CLEO: I was sealed in the artifact for centuries. It could only be opened by the one capable of k*lling Malivore: Hope. But I had to learn more about her and her powers, so I followed you here, to the Salvatore School. Your school seemed like an ideal place.

One of acceptance.
So when I learned that it was in need of financial assistance and that there was a supply of Malivore mud at hand, I helped.

(INCANTING)

Wait, so Malivore didn't send the leprechaun?

No.

And I did not summon the Ferryman, either.

I made him.

I made him as I have made so many monsters from the mud of Malivore.

(INCANTING)

But my most important creation was only necessary because Hope refused to let Landon go. I could not have her open up a portal to the prison world and risk Malivore's escape. I made the Ferryman so that Hope would believe he had granted her fervent wish. But the story changed when Malivore learned I was still alive. The monsters that came after the Ferryman and Landon's golem were his doing. Malivore promised me freedom from the darkness in exchange for bringing him that girl.

CLEO: And those monsters were meant to find me, as he once swore he would. I did not want to be his prisoner again, so I was forced to switch tactics. But of course I had to prevent you from discovering my true origins. I tried to keep you all safe. The parchment!

But when that proved impossible, I had to make a terrible choice. (GRUNTS)

But, again, you know that.

Hope has already lost so much in her life.

Her father, mother, uncle.

And I won't watch her lose her human life, too.

Family means everything to her.

And maybe someday she'll want one of her own, which would be impossible if she becomes a full Tribrid.

I understand loss all too well.

After I escaped from Malivore, I yearned to return to my village, but I was afraid Malivore would follow me there.

t*rture my family and friends.

So you ended up in Italy.

It was there that I met a brilliant young man, Leonardo da Vinci.

(CHUCKLES)

So I told Leonardo about the friends Malivore had m*rder*d.

He sketched them in an effort to help me heal.

Some of those sketches I have heard are famous now.

But back then, they meant he cared for me.

Leonardo had cared for many men and women before me, but he was my first and only love.

I should've known it would not last.

Yeah.

I've learned that the hard way, too.

My grandmother's precious granddaughters.

She at least was safe from Malivore.

Having ascended into the heavens.

I believe she still watches over me as ancestor.

It was her power running through my veins that helped me infuse the artifact I inspired Leonardo to create with magic that could shield me from Malivore.

(EXHALES)

We agreed to keep my existence a secret.

So I parted ways with Leonardo hoping that one day, Malivore would be gone, and I could return to the world.

It wasn't a true life, but...

at least it was painless.

Until you found me, and, well, now you finally know my full story.

I'm...

sorry your time with... da Vinci was cut short.

And I am sorry for everything that has happened to you.

But...

I need to know that you won't try and k*ll Hope again.

In my desperation to do what I believed was right, I did not see that history was repeating itself.
