Previously on monk...

Wait a minute, that's new. Is this for me?

Adrian, don't open that.

Promise me you won't open it till Christmas.

Okay. Put it back.

Hello?

[Engine starts]

She must have been meeting with somebody, but who?

Was it a story she was working on?

I don't know.

I can't see it.

And why can't I see it?

I think you're too close to it, monk.

I know that building. What was it, 12 years ago?

Almost exactly. Missing midwife.

Do you remember the doctor we were talking to?

Nash, right? He's our guest of honor.

So Adrian, you working on any interesting cases?

Mr. Monk, are you okay? I'm seeing spots.

Arian, look at me. You've been poisoned, Adrian.

Somebody is trying to k*ll you.

So how long?

Two maybe three days.

We think that kazarinski sh*t Dr. Nash last Friday, and we think that he poisoned Adrian monk.

He must be taken alive.

If he dies, monk dies.

Kazarinski! Police!

[Train whistle blows]

Trudy's gift.

It's time to open it.

Hello, Adrian.

If you're watching this, it means I'm dead.

I know we said we'd never have any secrets, but there's something I never told you.

Something happened, something terrible, years ago, before we met.

Mr. Monk, you have to push "play."

It's been over two hours.

It's okay.

It's okay.

Here we go.

I know you've always idealized me.

You know, you think I'm some kind of Saint.

But sweetheart, I am not perfect.

I made a mistake.

A big mistake.

It was 15 years ago, before we met.

I had an affair. Ah!

With my law professor.

He was married at the time.

I swear I didn't know that.

Anyway, we, um...

Well, I was pregnant.

She lived for nine minutes.

I never saw her.

Anyway, the father, the professor, his name is Ethan rickover and...

Rickover.

The remarkable Mr. Monk. Good to see you again.

He's a judge now.

He's just been nominated to the court of appeals, which is why I'm making this tape, because the woman who's been missing all week, Wendy stroud, she's the midwife who delivered my daughter.

[Remote clatters on table]

You can't go anywhere. I'm going.

No, Mr. Monk, come on, you're sick.

I'm not gonna die.

I'm not gonna die.

Not yet.

Judge rickover, I would like to return to one of your earlier decisions, harurra vs. California.

You were the deputy solicitor general on that brief, is that correct? That's correct, senator.

That was a death penalty case in which we held that the prisoner, Mr. Harurra, was entitled only to relief in the clemency process.

And is that an opinion you still hold?

To be honest, senator, I'm not sure.

The law has changed. I have changed.

I was 28 years old then, thought I knew everything.

[Chuckles]

You're aware, of course, that there are cases pending which have similar circumstances, and some of them involve recent advances in DNA evidence.

Judge rickover?

Senator, I don't think it's a good idea to rewrite the constitution just because there's been a scientific breakthrough.

The basic principles of common law haven't changed.

They never do.

The issue is application in a new context.

[Coughing]

And is context always the overriding factor?

Excuse me?

Is context always the overriding factor?

In my opinion, yeah.

These are the same basic principles that have animated a common law system since the time of John cook.

But then again, I'm not here to teach you high school civics, am I?

Actually, I wish you would.

I think some of us could certainly use it.

Trudy Ellison, she was a student of yours at Berkeley.

You k*lled two women, Wendy stroud, who was the midwife at the birth, and my wife.

[Chuckles]

Well, they told me to expect this.

They said that at every confirmation hearing the nuts just come out of the woodwork.

Judge rickover, we know the whole story.

Oh, really?

Mr. Monk, I taught thousands of students at Berkeley.

Some of them were unstable.

More than just a few had crushes on me.

But please, where's your proof?

Where's the child?

The baby d*ed.

Wow. Is that Trudy's car?

Yeah.

Well, at least he knows.

There's something wrong.

I'll tell you what's wrong.

No, not this one.

It can't wait, not this one.

This man?

You never can tell, can you?

He's covering up an affair he had.

Is that all? Doesn't seem right.

Nobody cares about affairs anymore.

That's why I was thinking there's got to be something else.

There has to be more to it.

Now doctor wants you to sleep tonight.

I'm leaving this here. It'll put you right out.

Sleep is the best medicine.

He'll never move.

Pardon me?

That's what he said.

I heard him talking.

Ethan will never move.

I think he's gonna be buried in this yard.

So why won't he move?

What is it about that house?

Wait, he'll want this.

If we forgot anything, we can always come back.

[Groans]

Steven.

Natalie, are you all right?

I don't know. I don't feel so good.

Spots. I'm seeing spots.

Oh, my god. Ah!

It's the poison. It's the same as Mr. Monk.

I don't understand. I've been with you all day.

You haven't eaten a thing. Yeah. Oh, my god.

Natalie? Babe, what is it?

Rickover. Ethan rickover at the hearing.

Mr. Monk dropped a wipe.

I thought you were sick.

I'm feeling much better.

Much, much better.

He used a pen. He didn't want to touch it.

Oh, god, it was in the wipes.

That's how we missed it. We assumed it was the food.

We'll get you right to the hospital.

We have a source now. We can break it down.

We'll have an antidote in two hours.

What about Mr. Monk? He'll be fine.

You got to tell him. You got to call him.

Okay, I'm calling.

[Line rings]

Nurse's station. This is Judy.

You can call him directly.

Really?

Okay. I'll go check.

Kenny.

Kenny, what happened?

[Gasps]

Oh.

Is it raining out there?

It's really coming down.

Captain, there you are.

Been looking all over for you.

You haven't heard? Heard what?

There's a cure. There's a cure?

Yeah, for monk. They isolated the poison.

It was on his wipes.

Ha! The wipes!

That's great news. There's a cure.

Come on, I was just on my way to the hospital.

We can celebrate. He's not there.

Who's not there? Monk. He escaped.

He drugged a cop and took his g*n.

Okay, come on, let's go. We can take your car.

Where are we going? To stop monk.

From doing what? The wrong thing.

[Coughing]

Your garage was open.

I borrowed a shovel.

Pick it up.

Pick it up!

Over there.

Are you gonna k*ll a federal judge?

Tonight I'm the judge.

Over there, let's go. Let's go.

Good, good, good. Step on it! Step on it!

[Horns honking, tires screeching]

Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! All right, all right.

Just go! Go!

Jeez.

Sorry, sorry.

[Tires squeal]

Where the hell is the siren?

In the back.

What's it doing in the back?

I haven't used it in ten months.

Why, did you think the bad guys all retired?

That crime is over?

Hell, what is all this crap?

Yard sale.

You bought all this?

No, I'm selling it.

You're selling all of this?

Hey, these my barbells?

No, those are mine.

No, I lent you my barbells last year.

These are my barbells.

I bought the same ones.

With my initials on them?

Okay, maybe those are yours.

Just take 'em.

Not gonna take 'em now.

We're in the middle of a thing.

I can't find the siren.

I might've sold it.

All right, detective monk, what now?

Dig.

I think both of us are gonna be dead by morning.

I said dig.

Not there.

Over there.

By the sundial.

Over there.

Let's go. [Coughs]

Go on.

Go on!

[Honking horn]

[g*nsh*t]

Go!

Come on!

Guess we got a siren.

[Coughing]

Keep digging.

Sir, I'm not gonna tell you again.

I want you to put the w*apon down.

We're not done yet.

I'm gonna bring up a sore subject here.

I don't want you to overreact, but Trudy and I used to talk about capital punishment all the time, and she never believed in it.

Shut up! Just shut it.

[Tires squealing]

You mention her name again, it'll be the last word you ever say.

Oh, god, okay.

Stottlemeyer, homicide. You guys just relax.

Everybody... Everybody, take a deep breath.

Relax. Hold your fire.

That's close enough. Monk!

Monk, put the g*n down, buddy. You don't want to do this.

You don't have to do this.

Hey, who told you to stop?

Keep going! Keep going!

Monk, monk, listen to me.

They've identified the poison.

It was on your wipes, monk. It was on your hand wipes.

They have the antidote.

We have to get you to a hospital.

We can figure out what to do with him later.

[Coughing]

[Metallic clank]

What was that?

That is Wendy stroud.

The midwife from 12 years ago?

Yeah. [Coughs]

Bones. A human skull.

Couldn't figure out why he wouldn't move.

Then I remembered there was a sundial under the tree.

Why would anyone put a sundial under a big tree like this in the shade?

Didn't make any sense.

[Coughs]

12 years ago, when he was nominated for the federal bench, his name was in all the papers.

Wendy stroud must have seen it right?

Right?

She said she found Jesus, that she was born again.

She couldn't live with her guilt.

She was gonna tell everyone about me and Trudy and the child.

So you k*lled her.

And then Trudy.

For what?

For nothing!

Monk, monk, monk.

For a job!

Monk, don't, don't. For a job!

For...

[coughs]

For a job.

[Coughing]

Hey, hey, hey. Rickover, no!

[Overlapping shouting]

You take care of her.

[g*nsh*t]

[Coughing]

I think I'm gonna cry. [Both chuckle]

The last time you were here, what was that, two weeks ago?

A week and a half.

A week and a half, and you looked horrible.

Oh. And now look at you.

You look great.

It's like a miracle.

It was a miracle.

So finally, after 12 years...

12 long years...

Closure.

Closure.

How do you feel?

Fine.

I'm good.

So how do you feel?

I know how i'm supposed to feel.

I'm supposed to feel like I'm finally happy, finally at peace.

But?

I feel...

Empty.

Well, that's not surprising.

Adrian, you've spent most of your adult life looking for the man who k*lled your wife.

See, that search kept you going.

Now it's gone.

So what's next?

What do you do when you wake up tomorrow?

What do you care about?

See, now these are the difficult choices.

Something else.

There's something that's been nagging me.

Just before Ethan rickover d*ed, he said, "take care of her."

Take care of who?

I don't know.

I'll probably never know.

All right.

You want my advice?

And I assume you do because you're here.

Let it go.

It was on the bottom of this section.

"Miss stroud made headlines

"15 years ago, January 2, 1983, "when she found a newborn infant girl

"on a playground and brought it to a local orphanage."

1983.

"Take care of her."

Excuse me?

Rickover's last words.

It wasn't the affair, Natalie.

This is what he was covering up.

It was the baby.

It didn't die.

The baby lived. Trudy didn't know it.

She never knew it.

They lied to her.

Her daughter lived.

They put her up for adoption.

She's alive, and she's out there somewhere.

Ha!

Trudy's daughter.

Uh-huh.

Uh-huh.

Oh, he's standing right here. I'll tell him.

Are you ready?

They found her. Her name is Molly.

Molly. Molly Evans.

She was adopted 25 years ago by Andrew and Beth Evans.

She is unmarried. She lived in monterey county.

And get this, she writes movie reviews for the chronicle.

That makes sense. Trudy was a writer.

Monterey county. That's 20 minutes away.

Yeah, family services has already contacted her, and she would love to meet you.

I can't do it.

Sure you can.

No, what if she doesn't like me?

I mean, a lot of people don't like me.

I'm not crazy about me.

I can't do it.

I'm not doing it.

I'd rather keep things the way they are.

I like things the way they are.

No, you don't.

Mr. Monk, you have to go.

I'm telling you, you have to go.

This is a gift, Mr. Monk.

Trudy sent you a gift.

She sent you someone to love.

It's what you've been missing.

Molly?

Yeah.

It's okay.

It's okay.

Yeah, this is her parallel parking.

Yeah. She's an excellent driver.

She's never had a single parking ticket.

Yeah, here we are. This is us having lunch.

Yeah.

She eats five times a week.

She's a vegetarian, but she eats fish.

You took all these pictures? Yeah.

Oh, here she is drinking coffee.

Yeah, it's a kona blend.

Sometimes she has the Colombian.

Monk, there's gotta be more than 600 pictures here.

Well, the rest are still being developed.

But you've only known her for three days.

I feel like I've known her forever.

She feels the same way. She actually said that.

Oh, yeah, these are her adopted parents.

Yeah, that's Andy and Beth. They're great.

He's a little overweight, but he's a retired ophthalmologist.

This is her new boyfriend, Kyle.

He's two years younger than she is.

She doesn't know how she feels about that.

Oh, yeah, and this is...

This is her telling me not to take so many pictures.

This is her trying to take the camera away.

Oh, and guess what else. You know the Internet?

She's on it.

Really, she made the cut, huh?

Uh-huh. Oh, yeah, yeah.

Yeah, she has he own website.

It's called a blog.

Really, I mean, that's what it's called, a blog.

Yeah, you can look up all her old movie reviews.

Randy, you like movies.

So you just...

You type in "Molly Evans reviews" and then a dot, then com, "c-o-m."

Yeah, I'll check it out.

What is this?

"Leland."

Did you write me a letter?

"Dear Leland."

I've been, uh, holding onto it all week.

I've just been waiting for the right time to...

I guess this is the right time.

Randy, when...

When did this happen?

I've been talking to them for a few months.

What's going on?

Randy's leaving us.

He's taking another job.

What?

Yeah.

You're looking at the new police chief of summit, New Jersey.

What? Police chief?

Whoa, congratulations.

Congratulations.

Thank you.

Nicely done, chief.

Thank you.

So what do you think? You think I'm ready?

I don't think anything. I know that you're ready.

You're gonna be great.

Well, I had a great teacher.

I'm talking about you.

I knew what you meant, Randy.

Thank you, Randy.

Um, why New Jersey?

Oh, I think I know the answer to that.

Sharona. Sharona?

You and sharona.

We got a place. We're moving in.

Ohh.

That's perfect. That is perfect.

You and sharona. [Chuckles]

I knew it.

Well, I didn't actually know it, but now that I know it, I kinda knew it.

Yeah.

[Chuckles]

Well, thank you, guys. Thank you.

Okay. Hold on, hold on.

Yeah. Oh, that was a good one.

Adrian, this is embarrassing.

I'm not a movie star.

You are to me. That was good too.

What do you do with all these pictures anyway?

I'm making scrapbooks.

I've already filled four.

You want to see them?

Maybe when I get back.

Back from where?

I have to go to Toronto, the film festival.

Oh, yeah.

What film festival?

The Toronto film festival.

Oh, yeah.

I go every year.

I won't be gone long.

Oh, thank god.

Two weeks.

Whoa, whoa, okay, wait.

Yeah, two... two weeks.

Okay.

Okay, I'll come with you.

I can do Canada.

I went there once with your mother.

What about your job?

I don't have a job. I'm retired.

Since when?

Since you.

Since you and me. Since us.

Well, I thought you were broke.

No, I'll be fine.

I can live for 20 years if I don't eat or pay rent or pay Natalie.

Right?

Adrian, you can't quit.

What would you do all day?

This.

Bang around with you.

I'm gonna watch you grow up.

I'm 26 years old. I'm not a kid.

I just want you in my life, you know?

I need you in my life.

I am in your life. I'm not going anywhere.

I'm worried about your life.

You can't quit.

Not for me.

There are lots of other trudys out there, and I think you're obligated to help them.

You have a gift.

And a curse.

It's not a curse. It's a gift.

Can't you see that?

Maybe that's why I'm here.

To remind you.

What?

That's exactly what your mother used to say.

Really?

What was she like?

Well, she snored.

[Laughs] She did? Yeah.

She never believed me.

One night I taped her with a tape recorder.

She still didn't believe it.

She loved Willie Nelson.

When she was thinking, she'd stick out her tongue like this.

Oh, my god, I do that all the time.

I know. I love when you do that.

[Alarm rings]

[Alarm stops]

[Contented sigh]

What are you doing?

Cutting out a recipe.

I'm making dinner for Steven.

You should come. You want to come?

Ah, no thank you. I didn't poison you.

It was on the wipes. I know.

I can't go anyway.

I have plans.

Mm-hmm. What kinda plans?

With Molly. We're going to the movies.

You're going to the movies?

Yeah.

Adrian monk is going to the movies.

Why are you crying? Is that so strange?

That's not strange at all.

That's why I'm crying.

What are you gonna see?

I don't know. Whatever's in theater ten.

Okay, all right, that's more like it.

That's the Adrian monk we know and love.

Hello. Yeah, he's right here.

Oh, okay, I understand.

We'll be right there.

We have to go.

They found another body on west vinton street.

The captain's waiting for us.

Hey, wait.

What are you doing?

I'm checking the stove to make sure it's off.

That's a good idea.

You don't want to get all the way downtown and not be sure.

That actually happened to me once.

Really? Yeah.

[Somber music]

Pothole. Yeah, sorry, sorry, sorry.

That's not... Harold!

Wipe?
