Infecting the dead with strains of fungi

that grow on necrotic flesh.

It's conceivable if we can
modify an existing fungus,

then we can one day accelerate
the dead's rate of decay,

virtually neutralizing them
as an active, mobile thr*at.

I think we'll need her
to keep him motivated.

If the CRM finds them first,
or if your mom figures out

- what Felix and Iris know.
- HUCK: There's guards, patrols.

It isn't as easy as you think.

ELTON: Ow!

NEGRETE: When we first
see Hope, in Episode ,

she's marveling at the fact
that she has running water.

For her, it's really about
feeling a sense of almost PTSD.

When you're out there in the world,

you're not behind walls,

and there's always a danger that lurks.

It's really about showing
a difference of her condition.

LEO: Make a wish.

Not only does it feel foreign,
based on what she's been through

but also she thought
her dad was in trouble.

For all she knew, maybe
he was behind bars somewhere.

But to see that he's been living

in these fairly swanky conditions,

that's part of the shock
that she's feeling.

The hardest part about being out there

was worrying about you.

Whereas, with Iris,
she's out in the world.

Yeah.

Her and Felix are k*lling Empties.

And she has just k*lled a soldier.

It's really about kind of
processing what she's done,

but not being upset about it.

We're seeing a different side of Iris,

who's not afraid to fight,
who actually is craving a fight.

It's really her call to action

and the thing that kind
of keeps her going...

Hyah!

The fact that she's not afraid
to do this again if she has to.

What's she's realized in Episode is

that she has no regrets.

This is w*r

even if they don't know it yet.

I think, when Felix sees
what Iris has done

at the beginning of the episode,
I think he's pretty stunned.

We sort of hinted this...

We don't quite come out and say this,

but Felix himself,
as this group's protector,

has never k*lled a human being.

So it's, in a way, shifted
the balance between them

a little bit.

Like, he's someone
that wants to offer advice

and give guidance,
and this is the one area

of the apocalypse
that he can't do that for her.

So it's really put them

on different footing with each other.

[GASPS]

[BREATHING HEAVILY]

One of the things that was
really important for us

in Season was to start
pulling back more of the curtain

and revealing more about who the CRM is,

what the CRM wants.

At the end of Episode ,

Hope is really ready
to hate on this place.

What ends up happening

throughout the course of this episode

is that she starts to see the world

a little bit like her dad did

at the beginning of this alliance,

which is, there are possibilities

and things that can happen

with scientific minds coming together.

She's seeing that as bad as CRM is,

as horrible as things that they've done,

at least the people here...
Some of these people,

some of these civilians,
some of these scientists,

and some of the work
they're doing is good.

And so she's starting to see

that maybe things aren't
quite as black-and-white

as she initially thought they'd be.

Dennis starts off as
a very mysterious figure,

and he doesn't screw around.

[GROWLS]

One less to worry about.

He's up-front about that
from the get-go.

He obviously is
in a position of authority.

We know he's tangentially
part of the CRM,

but he's not wearing a CRM uniform.

He seems to have a lot
going on in his head.

When Silas asks Dennis
about what this place means

and what it's for,

he gives this very heartfelt,
emotional answer.

If the modeling is right,
we can clear out the state

while the measures
keep more from coming in,

we can gain a foothold.

That's what we're doing here.

Starting over.

It obviously means a lot to Dennis.

So we get the sense that this place

is about starting over,
but more than that,

it provides others
an opportunity to start over.

So it sort of begs the question,
"For Dennis,

why does he feel the need to start over,

and what was his life before?"

Those are things that we'll be exploring

in the episodes to come.

This is the first episode,

but we really have gotten
an extended look at Elizabeth

behind the scenes, as it were.

We've seen scenes of her
in her apartment last season.

We've seen her
surveying the b*ttlefield.

But in terms of
how she operates this place,

that's really the thing
that we're exploring.

Dr. Bennett, how are you doing?

She always knew this plan of Huck's.

Eventually, Hope would
find out the truth,

which means her father
would find out the truth,

and there'd be a lot of anger
toward the CRM.

That's how much my daughter's
safety meant to you.

You sent one soldier.

Elizabeth knew
that when it comes to Leo,

his priority is always
going to be for the future

and working for the future,
so, to that end...

You're excused.

... be angry, have your tantrum,

but we know you're still gonna
remain loyal to the CRM.

♪ ♪

Elizabeth goes to the perimeter

to poke around, to ask some questions.

Lieutenant Colonel. This is a surprise.

Indira, sorry to come unannounced,

although I'm sure your lookouts
gave you ample warning.

And we learn that Elizabeth and Indira

have a history together.

These are two strong female leaders...

You can never be too careful.

but at the same time, make no mistake

that Elizabeth is in charge,
and you don't want to cross her.

And kind of flexes that muscle
and makes it very clear to her

that, "I hope you didn't betray us.

I hope you're not harboring
any fugitives.

'Cause if you're lying to me in any way,

there will be hell to pay".

Oh, it's so much
responsibility, isn't it,

having so many people
entrust their well-being

and their survival with you?
