Previously on "When Calls the Heart"...

Why are you such an expert at cheating?

What's your point?

You don't seem like a good fit here.

He needed a hand with his oil well.

I've only been helping him
outside of work hours.

Michael, this contract is
really important to us.

We started an orphanage earlier
this year in Fairview.

Why are you so interested
in setting up the library?

Now, I am not going to deny that
I was aware of your beauty.

But as I got to know you,

I became fascinated by your goodness.

I am so happy.

Little Jack is finally
going to be baptized.

A travelling pastor has agreed
to perform the ceremony.

As soon as I heard, I made a call.

[PHONE RINGS]

I asked my sister Julie to
be little Jack's godmother.

To say she was surprised
would be an understatement.

But little Jack's christening

isn't the only exciting thing happening.

We're getting the library
ready for its grand opening

during the Founder's Day Festival.

This year we'll have some
new faces at the event.

Faces that have brought joy.

Hope.

And a little curiosity
to our whole community.

Lee!

Hey, sweetheart.

Now, have you made room for Grace

to park her wagon
behind the house?

- Of course I did.
- Wonderful,

because I just heard the train.

So, that means she'll have
picked up Spencer by now.

Ah, speak of the devil.

Grace, hello!

Come on down. Let me help you.

Ooh!

[LAUGHS]

Grace, it's good to see you.

Hi.

And who is this young man?

This is Spencer.

The matron at the orphanage in
Alberton just brought him to me.

Well hello, Spencer.

Now, Spencer.

How was your train ride?

It was okay.

Okay, well on that note,
why don't I take the bags

back to the house, and
I'll park the wagon.

- Sounds good.
- Thanks, Lee.

You're very welcome.

Hey, Spencer.

You're looking a little bit pale.

Why don't you bring him by my office.

I'll check him out.

Thanks, Carson. I will.

Now, come with me.

There are some familiar faces who
I know will want to see you.

The Festival will begin

with the grand opening of the library

and I think you should have the honour

at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Well, thank you but I really think

you should be the one to do it.

No, we wouldn't have a
library to begin with

if you hadn't donated the building.

Yes, but you are the inspiration.

What about this:

We'll cut the ribbon together.

What do you think?

Sure.

Lucas, there is a call for
you from Cape Fullerton.

Thank you, Fiona.

I will be by later to help
you with the library.

And I will leave you to your planning.

I finally have Mr. Bouchard for you.

Please hold while I connect you.

[PHONE RINGS]

Hello?

(WOMAN) He's coming after us.

(LUCAS) Wait until the line is clear.

They know you're in Hope Valley.

'Kay. Mm-hmm?

So what are you going to do?

- I'll figure it out.
- Lucas!

Good-bye.

Hi.

Are you ready to come out?

Oh, Elizabeth!

Oh, Rosemary did I hear
that Grace is in town?

In the flesh,

and with the sweetest
little boy named Spencer.

They are at my place now settling in

before running some errands.

How's the festival planning?

I am going to make sure that
the Founder's Day Festival

is the biggest this town has ever seen.

- Oh, of course you are.
- [GIGGLE]

Do you need any help?

That is very sweet of
you, Elizabeth, but no.

You are much too busy with the library

and the christening preparations.

How are they coming?

I just have one more thing to do.

Well, I'll leave you to it.

There are two of my favourite people.

How's the little man doing today?

Well, we have a question for you.

Yeah? What's that?

As it turns out, the
travelling pastor thinks

he'll be able to perform
little Jack's christening

in the next few days.

Oh, that's great.

Mm-hmm.

I think Jack would have wanted
you to be his son's godfather.

We both would.

I, I don't know what to say.

Jack really looked up to you.

And one day, little Jack will too.

Well...

It'd be my honour.

Hey, any word yet on
the timber inventory

for the Northeast Inn?

Uh, Mike said he'd have it today.

Good. Hopefully we have enough
to fill the Harkness order.

Ah, there he is.

Okay, what do we got?

What?

Is that it?

A storm blew down a lot of the stand.

You know, we could move a
team further down the valley.

It's harder to access,

but the saw logs would
still be in good shape.

Yeah.

Well, I guess that's what
we're gonna have to do.

What?

I don't know how to tell you this.

Oh no. Not you, too.

Sorry, Lee.

With what Henry's offering
me, I just couldn't say no.

[SIGHS]

When?

I tried to put him off for a few days,

but he said he needs me to
oversee the new derrick

So you're leaving right away?

I'm sorry, Lee.

[SIGHS HEAVILY]

All right.

[CAR ENGINE PUTTERS]

[SMALL SCREAM]

- What happened?
- Are you alright up there?

What happened?

Oh, uh, the children did their best,

but they're not exactly first
rate carpenters just yet.

Oh.

Wow, it's really coming along in here.

I know.

I can hardly believe
that the grand opening

is right around the corner.

Yes, it's all Allie's
been talking about.

She's really quite the reader.

Well, you are, you are
quite the teacher.

Hi.

- Hi.
- Hi.

Uh, if you need any
help with the shelves?

I'll manage, thank you.

Okay.

Um, good day.

I just wanted to return this.

"A Room With a View". Was it good?

Very romantic.

Ah.

You know, you hold the record
for most books checked out,

and we haven't even opened yet.

Well, I have time on my hands.

Say, if that's actually the case,

Rosemary could really
use some extra help

with the Founders' Day Festival.

Oh.

Maybe I'll talk to her.

Great.

And, if you happen to see Lucas,

would you mind asking him
to bring his hammer?

What is it?

I shouldn't be sharing this,
but I'm worried about Lucas.

He got a call from Cape
Fullerton this morning.

A woman told him that
someone's coming after them.

Coming after them?

That's all I heard, and he
ran out after the call.

[SIGHS]

Okay, Spencer.

Here we go.

Do you know what this is for?

This is so I can listen to your heart.

Wanna give it a try?

Just put those in your ears,

and we just put this on
your heart right there.

And...

[HEART POUNDING]

Do you hear that?

Mind if I have a listen?

And you can put that
on your heart for me.

Right there, yeah.

And open.

Okay.

I don't know if I've ever
heard a heart that healthy.

[LAUGHS]

Do you want to listen again?

So, Spencer's just a little anemic.

If you add some meat, some spinach
to his diet, he'll be fine.

There's nothing to worry about.

That's the problem, he won't eat.

The Matron at the other orphanage said

they tried everything.

I could give you some iron pills,

you could wash it down with
some milk or some water.

At least...

I thought I had iron pills.

Faith, who is my nurse,
does all my ordering,

so I can call ahead to Benson Hills,

and we should be able to get
it here in a couple of days.

Oh, I was planning on leaving tomorrow.

Well, if you stay, you could enjoy
the Founders' Day Festival.

A festival?

Food and games?

Uh-huh. Yup.

So it's kind of like a carnival?

She's getting the picture.

[LAUGHS]

Did you hear that?

What do you think?

I think that's a yes!

[LAUGHS]

This is what we need.

Oh, Rosemary.

Elizabeth told me you could use
some help with the festival.

If you'd like, I'd be
happy to lend a hand.

Thank you Fiona, but I've
been doing this sort of thing

for a couple of years now.

I've got it under control.

Okay, I guess I misunderstood.

You know, Fiona?

I actually could use some help.

Would you mind coming by the house
after you're done work today?

That would be swell.

[LAUGHS]

Thank you.

Lucas.

- Hi.
- Hi.

I had a bit of a mishap at the library.

Did anyone get hurt?

No, but a shelf fell down.

You're closing up the saloon?

Everyone needs a break
every now and then,

including my staff.

I take it there's no point in
me asking where you're going.

Everything is okay.

Or it will be.

Lucas, if you're in
some kind of trouble...

I'll be fine.

If you'll excuse me.

Hand me that next one.

Mike, when you're finished unloading,

you meet me back at the office?

Sure thing, boss.

Well good. Alright, we'll see you later.

Well, I hope it was worth it.

What?

Ditching Lee when he's in the
middle of a big contract?

I didn't have a choice about the timing.

We all have choices, Mike.

I don't like leaving Lee,
but he'll be all right.

He's got a good business.

Guys like you and me, well,

we have to look out for
ourselves sometimes.

Great opportunities don't
just come along every day.

I had to take it.

So, what kind of opportunities
is Henry offering?

[TYPEWRITER CLACKING]

The saloon's closed.

I'm gonna need my desk back.

Possession's nine-tenths
of the law, Bill.

You're a judge.

You oughta know that.

[TYPEWRITER CLACKING]

I'll take the other side.

What's the matter?

It's Lucas.

He just left town.

He got a call this morning and
Fiona said it really shook him.

It was from a woman, saying
someone was coming after them.

Sounds like he's hightailing it.

He has a g*n, and he didn't look
like a man running from trouble.

Looked like he was running to it.

Where was he headed?

The call came from Cape Fullerton,

and that's the direction he's heading.

How is he travelling?

Horseback.

[SIGHS]

Don't get too comfortable.

It's closed.

I see that.

That was a real low blow, Henry.

Stealing Mike away from Lee like that.

Mike can work for whoever he pleases.

You must be offering these guys

some pretty sweet deals, then.

I am.

I pay well, and there's
room for advancement.

All I expect in return is hard work.

I'm a hard worker.

You interested?

Look, you and I haven't always
seen eye-to-eye, Jesse.

But you're a good man.

You want a future with my company,

you just come talk to me.

In the meantime, why don't
we let bygones be bygones?

Grace, Spencer!

- Hi.
- Good afternoon.

Carson, I'm so glad we ran into you.

Are you still expecting
the iron pills tomorrow?

Yeah, first thing in the morning.

You should come by before the festival.

You... are going, aren't you?

Did I ever tell you I
have a special ability?

Sometimes I can see the future.

Ahhhhh...

I see you with cotton
candy, candy apple,

playing games, having fun...

Wha? Wow.

I see plenty of fun in
your future, Spencer.

He fell asleep.

Oh, good.

Poor little guy is exhausted
after such a long trip.

You know, he barely ate a
mouthful of food at lunch today.

[SIGHS] Don't take it
personally, Rosemary.

He's been through so much.

Do you know what
happened to his parents?

Yeah. They both d*ed in a
flood just two months ago.

Oh, that's terrible.

Spencer was the only one to survive,

so he's traumatized as well as grieving.

That's why the orphanage
asked us to take him.

He needs special attention.

Well, thank goodness
they recognized that.

Yeah, the bigger places do
the best they can, but...

I know firsthand how easy it
is to get lost in a crowd.

I can't even imagine what that
must have been like for you,

growing up in an orphanage.

Yeah.

It was what it was.

But that is why Lillian and I

want to do better for the
kids at our orphanage.

I mean, that's really the
whole point of it all.

[KNOCK AT DOOR]

Oh. That's Fiona.

One moment.

Come in, come in.

Fiona, this is Grace.

Grace, Fiona.

Hello.

Pleasure to meet you.

You as well.

Well, we have a festival to plan.

All right.

Mm-hmm.

I'll go sew.

What brings you all the way out here?

I could ask you the same thing.

Just taking in the scenery.

Yeah? All the way to Cape Fullerton?

Some personal business has come up.

This business...

May require a p*stol?

You know, it's gettin' late.

I really should be going.

Listen, whatever this personal
business is, I can help.

This is something I need
to take care of on my own.

You're in trouble.

It's not about me.

Well, then who?

A friend.

Somebody's trying to hurt her.

I protected her once.

Now he's after us both.

This somebody got a name?

Amos Dixon?

What makes you think this
Amos Dixon is a danger?

Oh, you know, little things like

the fact that he set
fire to her business?

I was a block away, I saw the smoke

and I was able to get her out
before the ceiling collapsed.

Amos went to jail.

But now he's out, and
he's after us both.

What do you plan on doing
when you find him?

Settling this thing once and for all.

Lucas, listen.

It's a long ride to Cape Fullerton.

I wouldn't be surprised if
by the time you got there,

he was gone.

And even if not, then what?

You could end up in jail, or worse.

This friend of yours, the
last time you talked to her,

was she safe?

I think so.

Well, keep it that way.

One call to the Mountie headquarters

and I can have three
men at her doorstep.

But you have to come back
to Hope Valley with me now.

He's already there, Nathan.

She saw him.

Lucas, you're miles away.

The safest thing for her

is to go back to town and make the call.

That'll keep her safe.

All right.

Okay.

Now, I've moved the tables
for the pancake breakfast

away from the petting
zoo, for obvious reasons.

But, that also opens up
room for extra animals,

which are always a crowd pleaser.

Okay.

What? Am I missing something?

No, no.

It's...

have you thought about trying something

a little more exciting this year?

I am all about exciting.

Well, I've been to the World's
Fair in San Francisco.

They have stunt flyers in bi planes

doing loop-dee-loops above the crowds.

Imagine that.

Wouldn't it be something
to fly like a bird?

Wouldn't it?

Yes, yes.

But ladies.

This is Hope Valley and
not San Francisco.

I'm afraid the only flying we'll witness

is Lee flipping flapjacks into the air.

Well, who doesn't like flapjacks?

Ha! Exactly!

So why does this Amos Dixon have
it in for you and your friend?

He's a businessman from New Orleans.

He loans money to people, businesses.

The ones who couldn't pay him
back were known to disappear.

So your friend, she owed him money.

When she couldn't pay him
back, he threatened her.

So I did the only thing
I could think of.

Which was?

I appealed to his vice.

Five-card stud.

I win, her debt's clear.

He wins, I pay him double.

Quickly I realized he
was stacking the deck.

So you cheated, too.

The one and only time in my life.

Before long, Amos found out.

That's when things went
from bad to worse.

Hey, Jesse.

I'm just heading off.

So, uh, Monday, I need
you to head to the stand

and start measuring Timber volume.

No, no, no!

Lee...

Okay, fine. You know what?

You wanna go work for
Henry, that's fine.

I'm not gonna stand in your way.
You go right ahead.

I just have to think about my future.

You know, the opportunity
to be on the ground floor

of a growing company. It's a lot.

Yeah, I get it. I get it.

Do you know what he's offering?

Yes, I do.

He's offering percent more than I am.

But I just, I can't match that.

Lumber is not as lucrative
as oil, you know that.

But I understand.

I do. I get it.

You're just trying to do
what's best for you and Clara.

I haven't decided anything yet.

Right.

Well... no hard feelings.

Pancakes for dinner.

What could be better?

[LAUGHS]

Blueberry pancakes.

You know, this was a
Saturday night tradition

when I was growing up.

You will stay, won't you, Fiona?

Of course she will.

I insist.

Swell.

Mmm, it smells delicious.

Thank you so much for dinner.

I'll see if I can get
Spencer to join us.

Oh.

[DOOR OPENS]

Lee, you're home.

[SIGHS]

Oh, sweetheart.

You look exhausted.

Exhausted is one way to put it.

[SIGHS]

Michael quit on me today.

Hickum? He didn't.

To work for Gowen?

Yeah, and it could get worse,
I might lose Jesse, too.

- Oh, no.
- Yeah.

Losing Michael's bad enough,

but I've really come to depend on Jesse.

I'm so sorry, Lee.

Yeah.

We'll talk about it later.

Well, hey Fiona.

It's a nice surprise.

You're just in time,
supper's almost ready.

Pancakes for supper, huh?

Well, the smell takes
me back to this morning

when I had a larger workforce.

[LAUGHING]

Oh, sweetheart.

I think oil's the future, Clar.

I could really move up.

Mmm. Lee's growing too.

He is.

But there's more potential in oil.

Potential for what?

Happiness?

You love working here.

You love working for Lee.

Yeah.

I just, I want to make you happy.

For me to be happy,
you have to be happy.

[LAUGHS]

[KNOCKING]

Hello?

Lucas?

Are you there?

Evening.

[GASPS]

[TERRIFIED BREATHING]

They're good.

Good is great.

Good is great!

[LAUGHS]

[KNOCKING AT DOOR]

Well, I'm not expecting anyone.

- Are you?
- No.

Must be the smell of pancakes, right?

I'll be right back.

[CLEARS THROAT]

Fiona, can you pass the syrup?

Oh, of course.

There you are.

Jesse.

Hey.

You got a minute?

Um, yeah, sure.

Of course.

I won't take up much of your time,

I know you have company.

Oh boy.

This doesn't sound like good news.

I couldn't wait until
tomorrow to talk to you.

Lee, you've always been there for me.

It took me a while to get the
hang of things at the mill,

and you probably could
have fired me a few times.

Mmm.

But you didn't, and I
won't ever forget that.

I appreciate you saying that, Jesse.

That's why I'm not leaving.

You're not?

Loyalty means something.

You've been loyal to me, I
figure now it's my turn.

[LAUGHS]

I don't know what to say.

Okay then, uh, great.

Well, I'll let you get
back to your dinner.

Hold on, Jesse, listen.

Um, when this Harkness
deal goes through,

let's you and I sit down and
talk about your future.

Okay?

How does that sound?

That sounds good.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Okay.

[CLEARS THROAT]

Is everything all right?

Well...

It is now.

May I please have some more?

You most certainly may.

Absolutely. Me too, please.

[MOUTH FULL] Mmm. Pancakes are good.

I'm looking for Lucas Bouchard.

We're old friends.

Well, I'm sorry, but I
don't know where he is.

But you did...

come here looking for him, right?

When was the last time you saw him?

I don't know, um.

Three days ago?

He's been out of town.

Hmm.

Look, a friend is watching my son,

and she'll wonder where I am.

Of course, of course.

You'll be home to your son soon enough.

In the meantime, we would
like you to wait here.

With us.

Until Lucas gets back.

If you have a problem with Lucas,

why don't you take it up with him?

I am trying to take it up with him.

Precisely why I'm here.

Please.

Head back to the saloon.

She's my friend. I wanna help.

I don't need your help.

Every minute I spend speaking to you

is a minute I'm not
talking to headquarters.

You gave me her address, and her name.

That's all I need.

Tell me as soon as you know she's safe.

I will.

- Elizabeth?
- Lucas!

[g*n CLICKS]

Lucas.

Hi.

I told you I'd find you.

So what's going on?

Maybe nothing, maybe something big.

Somebody's after Bouchard.

Florence.

Can you pass me through to the
Mountie station in Benson Hills?

I knew Bouchard was trouble from
the minute I laid eyes on him.

Well, maybe he just attracts trouble.

You go to the watertower and stop

any strangers you see for questioning?

I'll watch the main road.

I'm on it.

(OPERATOR) The line is engaged.
I will try again for you now.

New Orleans.

San Francisco, Cape
Fullerton, and Hope Valley.

You get around, Lucas.

How do you two know each other?

We're old friends.

Well, we were.

Until he decided to poke
his nose in my business.

What business is that?

Cheating widows out of their livelihood?

She didn't pay what she owed.

Because you kept jacking up
the interest on her loan.

Again, my business.

Not yours.

Just let her go.

Til every penny of the
grand that's owed to me

is in the palm of this hand,
she's not going anywhere.

Where's your safe?

Would you like to play?

But, I should warn you, I
have catlike reflexes,

and I hate to lose.

Can I do it by myself?

Yeah, of course.

Mind if I watch?

She's remarkable.

Spencer may not know it,

but one day he's going to be grateful

he ended up with Grace and Lillian.

[KNOCKING AT DOOR]

Mr. Coulter, come in.

Hey Laura.

I come bearing pancakes.

Where's Elizabeth?

She's not home yet.

Oh?

She was supposed to be
back two hours ago.

I see.

Okay, tell you what.

I'll go back to the library
and see if she's there.

And get Rosemary to come over
here and watch baby Jack.

You should get going home, young lady.

Are you sure?

Don't worry, she probably got
caught up at the library

getting ready for the opening.

Okay.

Okay.

- Bye.
- Bye.

Hmm.

[GASPS]

Hurry up.

If you let her go, you can
have everything I've got.

Oh, that's very generous.

As soon as I get that,
she'll be on her way.

[GASPS]

Slowly.

On the bar.

Now slide it down.

[KNOCKING]

It's a Mountie.

Bouchard.

[KNOCKING] Open up.

Get rid of 'em.

Don't get any bright ideas.

[KNOCKING]

Bouchard.

[POUNDING]

Constable?

What can I do for you?

Is everything all right?

Everything's fine.

Why do you ask?

Why is the saloon still closed?

You caught me in the middle of a nap.

Is there anything else
I can help you with?

Um...

No.

Goodnight.

Go, go, go, go, go, go, go.

Get the horses.

[WHISPERING] I'm so sorry that
you got tangled up in this.

It's a little late for
that now, isn't it?

I promise...

No, no. No talking. No talking.

Empty the safe.

You, stay here with me.

We're gonna go for a ride.

You said that you'd let her go.

Well that was before the Mountie
came sniffing around, wasn't it?

I think I'll hang onto her for a while.

I'm not going anywhere with you.

[PAINED MOAN]

We'll see about that.

The money, please.

[FOOTSTEPS]

Don't move.

It's all here.

Good. Let's go.

As soon as Walt's back with the horses,

we're gonna go.

Come on.

Ah, ah, ah, out the back.

Back door.

Come on.

Back door.

What are you gonna do with us?

My father always said

"don't ask questions if you
don't want to know the answer".

Come on.

Drop the w*apon.

[g*nshots]

[SCREAMS]

[GRUNTS]

[GASPING]

Here.

No, thank you.

(NATHAN) Everyone's safe.
You can all go home.

Yeah.

That's all for now.

Is there any word?

I just got off the phone
with headquarters.

Your friend Jeanette is fine.

Why didn't you tell anybody
about this months ago?

You knew they were dangerous.

Why not let us know?

He's got a lot of people in his pocket.

I suspect that's the reason
he got out of jail early.

I didn't know who to trust.

Is there anything else that
I should know about you?

No.

I just hope that we can
put this behind us.
