Indians!

Indians!

[Rings bell]

Benjamin, what's going on?

Indians, mr. Ingalls, a
whole bunch of them!

All right, now,
just take it easy.

I don't know what you saw,
but it couldn't have been indians.

Then what in the heck are them?

I am little crow,
son of long elk.

We are santee...
People of the lakota.

We come in peace.

What do you want here?

There is much sorrow and
trouble among my people.

We are moving
north to a new land.

We have stopped

Only because we have
need of a white man's doctor.

I'm the doctor here.
What can I do for you?

Just a minute, doc.

You do not have to do
nothin' for these savages.

There's only . We
can handle them!

Now, hold on, macgregor.

I think you'd best
learn how to count.

Charles: I thought you
said you came in peace.

And so we have.

My braves only watch...

To see your friendliness.

I'll get my medical bag.

Charles: I'll go with you, doc.

[Man chanting]

[Chanting]

You didn't tell me
he was your chief.

Long elk is my father...
And chief of our people.

How long has he been this way?

Two days past.

Your father has suffered
an apoplectic stroke...

A very serious one.

He's lucky to be alive.

What does this mean?

A clot has formed in a
blood vessel in his brain.

It's blocked the flow of blood.

It's caused his loss of
movement and speech.

He may recover...

Or he could have another att*ck.

If he does...

When can he travel?

He can't.

He must. We must go on.

If he continues this
forced march, it will k*ll him.

Little crow, did you
jump the reservation?

Our people were starving.

There was nothing to hunt.

How can that be? I thought the
government just gave the indians

Another big piece
of land or something.

Your government gives the
indians land no one else wants.

If it were good land,
they would keep it.

We will not go back.

I've done all I can for him now.

What he needs now
is rest, food, and time.

Most of all, time.

I'll be back again tomorrow.

[Speaking native language]

[Man speaking native language]

Benjamin: hey, doc, mr. Ingalls!

Macgregor's called a town
meeting up at the church!

Charles: thank you, benjamin!

[Chatter]

Man: they're here!

How many of them are there, doc?

Hey, doc, we gonna fight?

Man: all right, just
quiet down now.

Everybody quiet
down! Quiet down!

Dr. Baker: if you'll all be
quiet for just a minute,

I'll try to explain
what happened.

All right, doc.

What's going on out there?

It's their chief.

He's sick, and he needs my...

Macgregor: what's he
got? Is it catching?

[All talking at once]

No! No, no, no!

No, it's nothing like that.

You cannot go
doctorin' no injun!

Let him get a colored doctor!

[People shouting agreement]

The murdering savages!

[All talking at once]

Wait a minute!

Wait a minute!

We don't know they
came here to k*ll anybody.

They came here in peace,
just asking for help.

Look, if you could've just
gone out there and seen them...

What do you know
about indians, ingalls?

You were not here when
the settlers were massacred.

That's right!

You're right! I wasn't here.

I wasn't here to see the whites
hang hundreds of indians, either.

Don't listen to him!

I'm all for wiping them out!

Men: yeah! Let's go!

Right! What do you say?

I'm with you! Yeah!
Wipe them out!

All right! Let's get our g*ns!

We'll get them all before dark!

[All talking at once]

They're camped
over the next rise.

Just remember they're indians!

They're no different than the
ones that k*lled our loved ones.

Let's go!

Bloody cowards!

Oh, darling, don't
be frightened.

I'll get the team unhitched
and into the barn, just in case.

Good idea.

Can I help?

Thank you, caroline.
We'll be fine.

I'll just give charles a
hand in the barn, then.

I'll heat up the coffee.

Thank you.

Pa, is he a chief? An
honest-to-goodness indian chief?

Yeah, half-pint. Long
elk's a real live chief.

Gee... A real live chief.

When can I play with
the little girl, pa?

I'm afraid you can't.

Leastwise, not outside.

Mary: who'd want to?

I mean, they're all
nothin' but heathens!

Mary, they may not
read the same bible we do

Or worship god in the same way,

But they're his children, too.

How long do you
think they'll stay?

I don't know.

No longer than necessary.

Charles, are you sure
we're doing the right thing?

Caroline, I wish I knew.

But I couldn't leave them
there to be slaughtered.

How could the
reservation be so bad,

To put those poor
children through this?

We've never known the
kind of suffering they have.

Running may not
be the answer, but...

If my family was starving, I
think I'd do the same thing.

Charles, macgregor and his
bunch are coming down the road.

You stay here. I want
everybody to stay inside.

Did you hear them indians
come by here tonight?

No. Why? Has there been
some kind of trouble?

Trouble? Yeah, there's trouble.

The savages run
off, the cowards.

They haven't done anybody
any harm, macgregor.

Why don't you
just leave them be?

No, I won't.

I'm going to find them.

And when I do find them,

They'll wish they'd
never seen walnut grove.

Pa says it's a man's
christian duty,

Wiping out all those savages.

If it weren't for
him scaring them off,

We'd all be dead right now.

Rob macgregor, that's not so!

My pa said the indians
didn't want to fight.

They only wanted a doctor!

Laura.

Yeah. Your pa would side
up with those heathens.

Everyone knows
he's an indian-lover.

That's right, he is!

Laura, come on!

Mary: come on!

Give me that rope.

My pa is gonna find them,

And when he does,

He's gonna hang them, like this!

Uh!

Ooh!

If hanging indians is your
idea of being christian,

I'd rather be a heathen!

Rob: my pa will find them.

You'll see! He'll find them!

Your pa can't find his
way to the outhouse!

Whoa, whoa.

That fool kid.

I just saw your son
wandering around outside.

Anybody could have seen him.

I had fallen asleep.

I don't have to tell you

What would happen to
your family and mine if he...

[Speaking native language]

In english. I got a
stake in this, too.

Where have you been?

Hunting, setting snares.

You did not ask permission.

I am a man now. I hunt
to feed my family.

Is permission needed for that?

You were careless
and you were seen.

You have endangered us all.

You are not to go out again.

I am sorry my son
was so careless.

He is young and cannot see

Through his anger and pride.

Pride's a good quality in a man.

I'm not trying to take
that away from him.

I just want to protect
my family, that's all.

We are your guests and
are grateful for your help.

We do not want to
endanger your family.

I'll bring you all
the food you need.

When will dr. Baker be back?

Not till after dark.
Is there enough?

Yes. I made some extra bread,

And there's some
soup for the chief.

Good.

Laura, will you help me
dish up this food, please,

For little crow and his family?

Sure, ma.

Looks good.

There's an awful lot here, pa.

Can I help you carry it?

Sure. I don't see why not.

Thanks, pa.

Charles: brought you some stew.

Brought you some
of my ma's fresh bread.

[Speaking native language]

My father has asked, "what
has become of our people?"

I haven't heard anything.

I'll see what I can
find out tomorrow.

There you are.

That bread ought to
go good with the stew.

And I brought you
some of my ma's cookies.

Well, don't you want a cookie?

My ma makes the best.

You don't have
to be afraid of me.

She is afraid of the people
who k*lled her mother.

I'll bring the chief some soup.

Dr. Baker will be here tonight.

Half-pint...

What's her name?

Little crow says she's
called yellow feather.

Yellow feather.

Such a pretty name.

Wish I had one like it.

Mine's so plain.

"Laura."

Plain old laura.

Well, darlin', I guess you'll
just have to live with it, huh?

Yeah.

I guess.

[Crying]

When he said that,

I didn't know what to do.

I know.

I know.

Why do people hate so?

God only knows, darling.

God only knows.

Laura, are you sure you
don't want to come with us?

Yes, ma, I'm sure.

All right.

Be sure you stay
close to the house.

I will, pa.

All right. We'll be home soon.

Come on, bandit!

[Bandit barking]

Laura: hope I'm not
disturbing you.

Feeling any better?

[Speaking native language]

I hate being sick.

Bet you do, too.

Brought something
for yellow feather.

Some people need more
love than others do.

Sally's one of them.

I think you'll love
her more than I do.

So I want you to have her.

I better go now.

Hope you feel better soon.

[Speaking native language]

[Speaking native language]

Mrs. Oleson: well, I
mean, what they do

Is march right into town in
broad daylight and abduct people.

How dare they?

Now, harriet!

Well, it's the
government's fault...

Giving those savages
all that land and food.

Huh! What more do they
want? Let's see now...

Mr. Ingalls, that's
going to be $ . .

Charles: thank you.

Macgregor: mrs. Ingalls.

The bloody savages...

They give us the slip.

They're headed toward
canada, all right.

You think they got across?

Yeah... You'd like to
see that, wouldn't you?

We seen some troops.
They'll catch them, all right.

And we're going to
keep scouting the area,

Just in case they doubled
back... No need to fear.

Oh, surely they
wouldn't do that!

Macgregor: you never
know, mrs. Oleson.

That's a favorite trick of
theirs... The ignorant savages.

They may be ignorant
savages, macgregor,

But they did manage to
give you the slip, didn't they?

Mrs. Oleson... Nels.

Good day, mr. Macgregor.

See you in church tomorrow.

Macgregor: whoa.
Good morning, doc.

Oh, good morning, hugh.

Mrs. Macgregor, rob.

Where have you been? I've
been looking all over for you.

Been awful busy.

Why? What's wrong?

It's that goldarned
carbuncle, so it is.

It needs lancing again.

Oh, that must be
terrible uncomfortable,

What with all that horseback
riding you been doing this week.

Could you be lancing
it after church?

I'm sorry, hugh,
I won't be here.

I've got a call to make.

But I'll do it first
thing in the morning.

Who's ailing?

The widow fraser.

All right.

I'll see you the first
thing in the morning.

Man: hi, mr. Macgregor.

Hi.

Hugh?

What's wrong?

You go ahead. I'll be along.

You're not going
to miss service.

That's not the road
to the widow fraser's.

Go on to church,
like I told you.

Tom, I want to use your horse.

I'll be back in a bit.

Sure thing, mr. Macgregor.

Where's pa going?

I don't know.

Caroline: laura, have you
got your prayer book?

Yes'm, I've got it.

Good morning, dr. Baker.

Morning, caroline.

Doctor.

Morning, charles.

How are things in town?

Oh, fine, I guess.

I saw macgregor this morning.

Wants me to lance
his carbuncle again.

Oh, yeah?

I think I'll make
him wait awhile.

You ought to let
him wait a year.

[Laughing]

Doctor.

Little crow. How is he today?

There's no change.

[Horse whinnying]

[Slapping horse]

Macgregor! Get inside!

Caroline!

Take the children
inside! Stay there!

Hiram, get him ready to move.

No. We can't. He's
going to have to.

When macgregor gets back
here, he's not going to be alone.

I'll put the canvas
on the wagon.

It's been at least an hour
since we left your place.

Macgregor should
be there by now.

I know that. I'm
pushing the horses

As hard as I can
without k*lling them.

We're leaving an easy trail
to follow, once they pick it up.

I know it. What am
I supposed to do?

I better see how he's doing.

Yah!

Mrs. Ingalls, it's
only a matter of time

Before my men find those tracks.

Now, why don't you save
us all a lot of trouble?

I cannot believe that you'd
protect those heathens.

I'm losing my patience now.

I can make you
tell me, if I have to.

Mr. Macgregor, if
you lay a hand on me,

You'd better be sure
you have a lot of help.

We picked it up. Let's go.

Macgregor: which way?

Man: we found it!

Second man: they crossed the creek
up there. They're swinging north.

Third man: the tracks
will be easy to follow.

Whoa! Whoa!

What's the matter, charles?

Nothing, doc. Just
stay inside, all right?

Well, good day to you, neighbor.

A fine and good lord's
day to you, friend.

Where are you heading?

California...

Check out the most
fabulous promised land.

It's going to be
kind of a long trip

With those old nags
you got there, isn't it?

I know, but it's
better than walking.

How'd you like to trade rigs?

How's that?

I said, how would
you like to trade rigs?

I got no money to throw in.

You don't have to worry
about money. I'll trade you even.

How come?

What do you care? Don't
look a gift horse in the mouth.

You want to trade rigs
or not? What do you say?

I say yes, and hallelujah!

Two sets of tracks!

What do you think, jack?

The wide tracks...
They'd be ingalls' wagon...

Heading west.

Indian camp, dead ahead.

[Speaking native language]

[Little crow speaking
native language]

Tell them they got to get
moving as soon as they can.

Not if they want
that old man alive.

Another hour in that
wagon, and he's a dead man.

We will wait until
my father can go on.

You stay here, and
you're all going to die.

Death holds no fear for us.

We will take my father inside.

[Speaking native language]

[Speaking native language]

[Speaking native language]

Little crow, when
that posse gets here,

I'm not going to be
able to stop them.

You have done all you could.

You do not have to stay.

They're going to have g*ns.

We will also have g*ns.

I go to my father.

[Two r*fle sh*ts]

Old man: I ain't got
nothin' worth stealing,

But you're welcome
to anything you want.

Take a look in the wagon...
And watch yourself.

It's empty.

Where are they?

I don't know nothin'.

Feller stops and
says he'll trade rigs...

This fine one for
my broken-down.

I say yes, and we go our ways.

Any injuns with them?

Answer me, man!

Yes, sir.

Let's go!

Rider coming in. Fast.

[Little crow speaking
native language]

They come soon.

You go now. This
is not your fight.

You're never going
to get away with this.

The sun will still
rise tomorrow.

Doc will keep an
eye on your father.

[Speaking native language]

I thought they just
had bows and arrows.

So did i.

They must've stole them
r*fles from someplace!

What are we going to do? That's
a lot of open country between us.

I know that! Let me think.

Looks like we got
them buffaloed so far.

Ingalls!

Yeah, macgregor?

I want to talk to you!

All right. I'll meet
you halfway. No g*ns.

Agreed!

All right,
macgregor, what is it?

Tell them to put
down their g*ns.

Wouldn't do any good.
They wouldn't do it.

I'm giving them a chance.

I think you're a liar.

All they want to
do is go in peace.

Then why do they
have all them g*ns?

To keep from getting
k*lled by people like you.

I'm asking you for
the last time, ingalls...

You tell them to
throw down them g*ns!

Or what, macgregor?
What are you going to do?

You and the vigilantes going
to come charging down the hill?

You wouldn't make it halfway.

You'd sh**t your own people?

You're not my people.

We're white men!

You're cowards.

That's why you won't
come riding down that hill.

See, that's the difference between
you and those indians down there.

They're not afraid to die.

People like you have done so
much to them through the years

That dying doesn't mean
anything to them anymore.

They're not afraid
of nothin', huh?

Well, we'll see.

There's an army post
east of sleepy eye.

We'll see how brave
your injun friends are

When they're looking down
the face of a gatling g*n!

We'll see if you want
to stay with them then!

They've gone for the soldiers.

You got , maybe
hours at the best.

We stay.

The soldiers will bring back a
great g*n that fires many times.

We stay.

If today be forever,

So it must be.

[Chief speaking native language]

[Speaking native language]

[Speaking native language]

[Chanting in native language]

What's he saying?

"A warrior I have been.

"Now it is all over.

"A hard time I have had.

"I am old and living
an unnatural life.

"I stand on the edge
of a life no one knows.

"I am anxious to
go to my father,

To live again... As men
were intended to live."

It is his death chant.

[Chanting continues]

Macgregor: it's right
over the next rise!

Soldier: yah! Yah!

Ready the g*n!

g*n ready, sir.

The cowards have run.

Soldier: yah! Yah!
Yah! Yah! Yah!

All right, ingalls...
Where are they?

They're in the mountains
by now, macgregor.

Sergeant, let's go!

Now, hold on. Hold on!

Only got a handful of
men here, macgregor.

The g*n's only
good out in the open.

As heavily armed
as those indians are,

We'd get massacred
trying to fight in cover.

Macgregor: you can't
let them get away!

Sergeant: ain't a matter of my
letting them get away. They did it.

You want to follow
them, you go right ahead.

Me, I'm going back to the post.

My wife made a
kidney pie for supper,

And I ain't gonna miss it.

Let's go. Move out!

[Chief chanting
in native language]
