03x03 - Scotland With Melissa McBride

Post by bunniefuu »

What if I told you that
it's possible to go back in time.

To a remote, mystic place.

That is somehow familiar?

This is it.

This is a personal journey.

That transcends
distance and time.

I trek to scotland.

With my good friend
melissa mcbride...

I'm tracing my family roots.

In an introspective quest
to uncover.

A family history of long ago.

This is my dream come true.

Did you feel any vibrations?

Norman, this is so much more
than I ever expected.

This is it.

All right, hit it!

Here we go! Yeah, baby!

That was crazy!

This is destined to be
a different kind of ride,

And not just because
I'm behind the wheel of a car.

More on that later.

In scotland,
there's a tale of mankind.

That spans thousands of years.

It's evident driving
through edinburgh.

There's an assimilation
of old world and new.

Here is a history
long intertwined with the uk.

Of a people's fight for freedom.

At the ballot box
and on the b*ttlefield.

It's my first time
exploring scotland,

And, yeah, the first time
I've left my bike behind.

But right now, I'm meeting up
with a dear friend.

For what I hope will be
a life-changing journey.

Hey. Hello.

Hi, muffin.

Hi. Hey.

Isn't this fun?

Look at this place.
What a cool spot.

Let's get some tea
while we're here.

No one's indispensable
on "the walking dead,".

But melissa mcbride
might just be the exception.

For eight seasons,
her portrayal of carol.

Has won over fans
and critics alike,

And the two of us have been
tight ever since the beginning.

Cheers.
Good to see you, sweetheart.

This is gonna be a fun ride.

It's gonna be great.

Different.

Different's good. Yeah.

Yeah, we...
We came up with this idea.

While we were filming
"the walking dead,".

Sitting in that field.

I was like, "you should
be on the show."

You should get your license."
you're like, "okay."

And I worked really hard
to get my motorcycle license.

And now here we are,
except the weather's dreary.

Yeah.

And I'm... I'm a new rider.

I'm not... I don't feel
that comfortable.

Just yet for these conditions, so...
Yeah, well, I'm... I...

I don't think anybody feels
comfortable in these conditions,

So it's better...
We have a car now, so...

I think we have
a good alternative.

Yeah.

I remember the first scene
I ever did with you on the show.

Was handing you that pickaxe,

And I kept get...
First time I gave it to you,

It had a little bit of blood
and you grabbed it.

And then I kept going,
"mark, put more blood on it."

Yanked it out of my hand.
You were so antagonistic.

And I, I liked... it was like...
you were just, like, chiding me...

Yeah, I was... And
shoving it up in my face.

I was pushing it.
I was pushing it.

But it's like, you know,

In grade school, when
you kind of like someone,

You're like...
You kind of, like, poke them.

Well, that's when I thought,
"you know what?

I'm gonna like that guy."

Yeah, yeah, we hit it off
right from the beginning.

"What an"
"what a... what a jerk.

I like that guy." "I like him."

yeah.

You been here before?
You been to scotland?

I've never been here before.
I haven't, either.

I'm j... I feel like I'm just, -

Well, I know that I have
roots here, you know?

I feel like... I don't know...
I have this genetic memory...

Yeah... That's somehow
being passed down.

Through the generations.

You get a little piece
of memory, you know?

I was looking up my ancestry,

And I found that... that I have
relatives in aberdeen.

Is mcbride a scottish name?

It's my father's mother side,
and she's a campbell. Campbell?

When you get a hit, it's like,
"this is so exciting."

It's like uncovering a mystery.

Yeah, I feel like a detective. I've
never done my... my family tree,

Not so much. You should.

I'm kind of... you know,
it's like I kind of.

Don't know if I wanna know.

I know there's a lot of, like,
criminal activity,

And, like, I know,
like, I had a...

Like, a great-great-grandfather
that was, like,

Hung as a horse thief.

And, like... like, crazy,
crazy stories like that.

But this is all about you.

I wanna... we're, we're gonna
find your stuff right now.

It's gonna be great. I just...

I want that to be our mission.

Yeah, that'll be our mission.
Yeah, yeah.

Let's get out of here.
Let's go do stuff.

You wanna see our ride? Yes.

Voilà. And it'll be much warmer.

Yeah.

It's a lot of fun. Let's go.

We can do this.

All right, this is gonna
be a good trip. Aah!

If you're gonna come over,
come to edinburgh.

There's so much going on.

Edinburgh's a very
historic city.

It's got a very rich,
long history.

Wow. Look at that, like,
castle-y ruin right there.

Edinburgh's very open
to the world.

And... and, it's a great city,

And I... and I wouldn't live
anywhere else.

It really is magical here.

It is. It's breathtaking.
My god.

Over the next three days,
we're on a mission to learn.

About melissa's family history.

While seeking out
scottish culture.

And tradition along the way.

As we leave edinburgh behind,

We'll learn about a curious
national pastime in kinross.

Before heading up to perth
to visit a native breed of dogs.

Perched on the edge
of the north sea,

We'll reach aberdeen,

Which is where we hope
to discover more about the life.

Of melissa's
great-great-grandfather,

Alexander campbell.

I can't...
I can't believe I'm here.

Edinburgh, brah. Brah.

Edin-brah.

It's got to be weird
driving on the left.

There we go.

The skyline's just
gorgeous here just, like,

Everywhere you turn,
everywhere you look.

Did I hit something? Yes!

What was it? The curb.

Good. Whoa.

This is where... aw.

This is where I lose a mirror.

Ready? No!

Clip, clip.
Whoa, that was close.

God. Wow. That was really close.

That was pretty close.

Before we head out of town,
we're making a quick stop.

Do you know the story
of the campbells?

No, and that's something
that I wanna find out...

How they may have lived,

What a day in the life
might've been like.

Since each clan claims
their own pattern,

We're here to find the colors
of melissa's campbell ancestors.

Tartan weaving mill.

The scottish traditional dress
for a man is the kilt.

There is that kind of
animalistic thing.

About just wearing a...

A whole suede of tartan
around you.

Here we go.
This is definitely the spot.

This is, like, the real deal.

And, of course, a true scot.

Doesn't wear anything
under his kilt.

It gets a bit drafty.

- Hi.
- Hey, guys. How you doing?

Tristan. Nice to see ya. Nice
to meet you, tristan, yeah.

- Hi there.
- Hi. Melissa.

Melissa. Tristan. We've got lots of
tartans, lots of different clans.

What about campbell?
What colors would campbell be?

Campbell? Well, yeah, campbell's
one of the, most famous clans.

Th... that we have in scotland,

And it's very much
a blue and a green.

There we go. Blue and the green.

So that's the colors
for clan campbell,

And that's the official crest
of the clan campbell.

It's a boar. It's a boar's head.
A boar. How cool is that?

And, this is in gaelic.

It's "ne obliviscaris," and that
means, "forget not."

Ne obliviscaris. Yes.

I think you spoke that pretty well.
Pretty well, yeah. You did a good job.

I wish I had a scottish name.

What's your surname?

Reedus. So reedus.

So the name "reed" is... is
quite a popular name over here,

And it's linked
to the robertson clan.

What's the robertson tartan?
I ca-can show you.

I would've never put "reed"
and "robertson" together.

There's a red robertson, which
is that one there. Wow.

So that's the... the most famous
dress robertson.

Wow. That one there.

You look good.
I'm startin' to feel it.

So this is where it all begins.

How long have these machines
been in production?

Well, these machines are
approximately years old.

And then the material
comes off the... off the loom.

So the material's woven.

We make it into kilts,

And the kilts
are made here, as well.

- Hi, guys.
- Hi.

- Elaine, dora, and helen.
- Hi. How's it going?

So I guess the ladies
are making the kilts.

Is it just nonstop kilt,
kilt, kilt, kilt?

I've made over , kilts?

Have you really? Wow.

Do you just dream about kilts?

After I had my first child, um,
I couldn't sleep after that,

So I would just sew
and sew and sew.

I could sew for two or three
days without any sleep.

That first child
sold a lot of kilts.

Definitely.

Nice to meet you ladies.
Yeah, it's a pleasure.

Yeah. Very nice to meet you.

Pleasure.

So, this is our
little bagpipe room.

This is ewan.

- Hi.
- Hello. Hi.

This is melissa. Hello. Welcome.

Nice to meet you. How are you?
Norman.

Nice to meet you, sir. It's a pleasure,
yeah. Hi, there. Nice to see ya.

What's the history
of the bagpipe?

Where did that happen?

It's famous in scotland, right?
Yeah.

But the first pipe
ever discovered is, basically,

Iraq... old babylonia.

Was it ever, like,
the stomach of an animal,

Or did I make that up?

- You did make that up.
- Okay.

But it's not just you
that made that up.

Everybody makes that up.

Can we hear a little bit?

You certainly can.

I think that you should do it.

This is your scottish-heritage
exploration.

I'll... I'll try it with you.

So just give it a go,
and keep going.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's it. That's it.

- Did I do that?
- Yeah, yeah, you did, you did.

Keep going. More.

Excellent.

Am I doing that?

Yeah, yeah. More, more, more.

More! More!

I'm just gonna shut the door.

That was really good.

No, it's... it's...
It's not like a guitar.

Slash has got nothing on me.

Thank you so much.
That was awesome.

Thank you very much. That was so fun.
All right, thanks very much.

Good, good. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you again, man.

- Can I get a picture, too?
- Yes, ma'am.

Yeah. That feels good.

Yeah. He said, "yeah."

Yeah, sometimes
you get recognized,

But this...
This was a happy accident.

Let's go to...

We're going to kinross
and go curling.

Wow.

This is pretty, right?
And that's edinburgh castle.

Wow.

Looks like it just grew right
up out of the... yeah.

Like, it did.

This could be my last view
of edinburgh.

Edin-brah.

Just when I learned
how to pronounce it.

Let's get out of town.
All right. Let's move along.

Let's go curl.

A scottish proverb claims,
"visit this place once,

And it will stick
with you forever."

And as we drive out
of edinburgh...

- Edinburgh, brah.
- Brah.

Edin-brah. Edin-brah.

I already understand why.

Whoa! Sorry.

You ready to curl, girl?

Don't stop. Don't stop.

- Where are we?
- I don't know.

I feel like I've been
transported.

Do you know where
nigg bay would've been?

This is nigg bay.

Fans of "the walking dead"
are quick to point out.

The chemistry between
daryl and carol,

And off-screen, you might say
our friendship has no bounds.

Did you just fart, norman?

I did not fart. You just farted.

Swear to god I didn't.

It was me. You farted?

You and scott wilson are
the biggest farters on our show.

And then andy and I are like,
"you guys are gross."

We're in scotland
to dig up details.

On melissa's great-great
paternal grandfather,

Who, years ago,
lived up in aberdeen.

But one's heritage is more
than just the past.

It's about understanding
the culture from which you came,

And we've got a lot
left to learn.

It's a -mile ride through
the southern scottish hillside.

To the town of kinross.

It's where we hope to b*at
some locals at their own game.

Scotland is beautiful.

Everywhere you look
is amazingly gorgeous.

This is your roots
right here, girl.

We're there.

Hey. Kinross curling.

Let's do this.
You ready to curl, girl?

Who came up with this?

We have about , members,
that play in scotland.

And then when did it become
an olympic sport?

It became an olympic sport,
em, officially back in .

The aim of the game of curling.

Is to get closest
to the center of the house.

You're gonna aim to the left
and turn the stone.

Or aim to the right and turn
the stone the other way.

'Cause the more the stone spins,

The less it's gonna curl
and the straighter it will go.

All right. You ready?

Aim for the brush,
and turn it clockwise.

Okay. Wow, this is heavy.

Aah!

Go, baby, go, baby,
go, baby, go, baby, go!

I went the wrong way.

Nice. No, that's good.
That's good.

- You're laughing.
- You're laughing at her.

It's harder than it looks,
for real.

It is harder, yeah. Yeah.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal.

Get it on. Perfect.

I figured that was illegal.
Yeah.

Yeah.

That was really fun.

Well played. Well played. Yeah,
thank you for teaching us.

Where are
you headin' off to now?

I'm going to find out about
my ancestors, the campbells.

What's the name?

Campbells. Campbell.

And I'm tracing my great-great-
grandfather, alexander campbell.

There's a place called nigg.

A wise scotsman once wrote,

"we are all travelers
in the wilderness of this world,

And the best we can find in our
travels is an honest friend."

And as our first day in scotland
comes to a close,

I'm excited to help
my good friend look.

For what she came here to find.

- Well, cheers.
- Cheers, guys.

- Thanks. Thanks.
- Sláinte mhaith.

Sláinte mhaith. I like that.

Today, our mission is twofold...

Engage in local culture.

While attempting to avoid
running off the road.

You are really huggin' the left.

I'm huggin' the left?
You are huggin' the left.

I like it over here.
We don't wanna get on the...

Am I... am I hanging over the left?
I'm like, "aah."

The fabric of scotland's society.

Lies in its time-honored
traditions.

The scots are a proud,
hardworking people.

Whose customs and heritage.

Continue to be passed down
and fiercely protected.

Look at this cool dog.

Hunting has always been
a way of life up here.

Since the ancient times,
and we're heading to a place.

That's keeping
that tradition alive.

There's nothing better
than driving.

Through the scottish
countryside.

Without a doubt,
probably one of the most.

Beautiful places in the world.

It's stunning... the scenery,
the mountainside, the wildlife.

It's pretty cool.

And once you come here,

You fall in love,
you never leave.

It's so pretty here.

Would you live out here?

Yes. Right?

You know, I've always had,

Like, this romanticized
idea in my head.

That I would love to just,

Like, live on a cliffside
with some sheep.

And the ocean crashing
on the cliff rock, yeah.

Like a big douche commercial.
Ha-ha!

You ruined the whole thing.
I hate you, norman.

Kind of does, though,
doesn't it?

Sounds like it.

How are ya? I'm norman.

I'm charlie. Charlie thorburn.

Nice to meet you. Hello.

Aren't you cold?

We're scottish. Yeah.

You're not cold.

It's not raining
and it's not windy,

So, you know, we're weird.
This is like the summer.

Charlie thorburn started
mordor gundogs in .

Specializing
in labradors and spaniels,

His innovative breeding
and training techniques.

Have produced top-line dogs.

Which are sought after
all over the world.

Labradors
were invented in scotland.

They originated here.

It was a very old
scottish family...

The... the buccleuch family,
the duke of buccleuch,

Who's the biggest
landowner in europe.

And were they always hunting dogs?
I mean, they were... and he...

They were invented
as a hunting dog.

He had a huge hunting estate...
He has a number of them still...

And he wanted to create
his own dog, the labrador,

Which is the most popular.

And most famous
pedigree dog in the world.

You know, hunting in...
In scotland, it's...

It's a very old...
Very old tradition.

But hunters around the world
have a little bit.

Of a sort of hunt...
A hunter's bucket list.

They wanna go to scotland,
and they wanna, you know,

Hunt in the traditional
kind of scottish way.

What we want them for is
to retrieve game birds for us.

They will retrieve a pheasant,
a rabbit, a hare.

So... have you ever
trained a dog to, like,

Work with scotland yard.

And find bodies
or anything crazy like that?

Um, we've got a springer spaniel
that went to the police.

As a-a drug-sniffer dog
just last year.

We've got a little cocker
spaniel that is called cookie.

She sniffs all the...
Kind of the queen's cars.

And aeroplanes and things.

When she goes up to aberdeen,
she goes and checks out,

Makes sure prince philip
isn't carrying anything.

He shouldn't do on the plane...
That kind of thing.

Right.

So, this is mufasa.

You need to be, like,
assertive enough.

That he's confident
to go with you, okay?

Come on, mufasa. Come on.

Heel. And sit. Can I keep it?

Can I keep mufasa?

Go get it.

This is a complete
opposite of my cat.

Like, complete opposite.

My cat's like, "hey, what's up?"

Bleh! Clean that up."

You know what I mean?

Okay, so, simple as that.

So do you wanna try...
Try with him,

We'll see how you get on?

Sure. Nacho, heel, heel.

- Nacho's not loving you.
- He's like, "nacho mama."

Come on. You gotta be positive...
Okay.

But you've also got to... Yes.

You've gotta be friendly with him, as well.
I gotta be stern and friendly. Okay.

Nacho. Come on.

There you go. You see?
Heel. Heel.

Come, nacho. Nacho.

So, so far on the grading scale,

Norman's getting, like,
a "b"-plus, "a."

Sit. Sit. Good.

Melissa, I'm afraid you're not
doing quite so well.

God.

- Sit.
- Sit.

He's so happy. He's so happy.

You're the best.

- Thank you so much for all this.
- No problem.

Really nice to meet you.
Yeah, super interesting, yeah.

It was so nice to meet you.
Thank you for the training tips.

Thanks.
And have a good onward journey.

- Thank you very much.
- Yeah, thank you.

- Thank you.
- It'll be fun.

You might be actually seeing
what... what your ancestors saw.

He probably stood right here.

This is my dream come true.

I feel like
I've been transported.

We're in the "game of thrones."

Sorry.

Could... I forgot where...
What gear I was in.

What?

What? What? I'm a great driver.

I didn't say anything.

I'm a very good driver,
like "rain man."

Crammed within
scotland's , square miles.

Is a storied history of man
that spans over , years.

Heading north,
it's a -mile ride up the a .

Where we'll reach
a medieval fortress.

Overlooking the cliffs
of stonehaven.

The dunnottar castle.

What's the story of it?

"The ruins are spread
over . acres."

On top of steep cliffs
that drop into the north sea.

It's best known as the place
where the honours of scotland.

Were hidden from
oliver cromwell's.

"Invading army
in the th century."

My god. So we're related.

What are you talking about?

Oliver cromwell
is my mother's side.

So it's your mom's side?
Is that right?

Probably more than likely.

Probably more than
likely that...

He's my th-great-grandfather.

Yeah, I'm kind of
getting the chills.

Back in the th century,

England controlled all
of scotland, ireland, and wales,

And cromwell,
he was lord protector,

Beloved in England,

Deemed a brutal dictator
by the irish and scots.

What you thought of him depended
on whose side you were on.

For melissa, this place is
a labyrinth of family history.

With paths that cross in
the most unexpected of ways.

Is that it?

Welcome to dunnottar castle.

That doesn't even look real.

That's so king arthur.

This is overwhelming, norman.

Overwhelming, yeah.

What?

Mel, this is nuts.

I wonder... where are we?

I don't know.

I feel like
I've been transported.

We're in the "game of thrones."

Are you the keeper
of the castle?

Jim. Pleased to meet you.
Jim, nice to meet you.

How's things? Good.

Hey. How are ya? Norman. Hi, norman.
How you doin'?

How's things? Nice to meet you.
Pleasure.

It's great.
This place is awesome.

Which is the oldest
part of this castle?

So, the oldest part of
the castle is just right here.

There was a chapel here.

,= actually, this was built.

The castle changed hands.

Backwards and forwards
over the years.

And, william wallace
took it back from the english.

And, took it back for scotland.

How did they pick this land
to put the castle on? Like...

There was a road that went
between edinburgh.

So, if you wanted to move
any men or armies.

Or anything of any size,

You'd have to move...
Move on this road.

And the castle here was built
to defend that road.

So, what happened back in s,

Oliver cromwell wanted to
take over britain, basically.

He marched on scotland.

And wanted to... to destroy
the crown jewels.

So, they were
brought here for safe keeping.

Oliver cromwell's army.

Was camped up on the hill
just at the top here.

Wow.

The crown jewels were saved
by some local people,

Smuggled out of the castle,

And taken down to
the local church and buried,

For about eight or nine years.

And then, when charles ii.

Was re-established as,
the king of britain,

The crown jewels
were given back to him.

The people that got the jewels
out... was it a woman?

It was a woman.

The person who was
in charge of the castle.

Was a guy called george ogilvy,

And his wife arranged
with another woman,

Mrs. Grainger,
who is the minister's wife.

She arranged in secret with her
to smuggle them out.

And didn't even tell
her husband.

Taking the initiative
and just doing it herself.

Exactly. Yeah, yeah.

"We've got to save the jewels."

Yeah.

They say there was only
people here.

That defended the castle
for eight months.

From oliver cromwell's army,

So it's an amazing feat, you
know, when you think about it.

- Wow.
- Yeah.

That is an amazing feat.
Especially when you just.

Wreak so much havoc across scotland.
Yeah.

Have you heard a wee bit
about oliver cromwell, then?

Have you done
some research on him?

Might be related.

No way.

Quite possibly
my th grandfather.

Really? Yes.

Yeah, that's... that's
a bit... I don't know.

I don't know if I should
let you in the castle.

Or not in that case.

Yeah, I don't know.
Just throw me over.

Throw me over now.

From what I've heard
about him, that may be.

I mean, he... he...
It was like he was...

He was fighting
for a revolution.

He wanted, you know,
the... the people in charge.

Do you think his... his ideas
were good to start with.

And he just went off the rails?

What do you think?

I don't know how to ta...
I don't know how to take him.

Yeah. I mean, I know
I don't know.

Scotland's ongoing -year.

Struggle for independence
from british rule.

Has oft pitted clan versus clan,

A complex plight still
without resolution today.

How you feelin'?
What are you thinkin'?

I've just... so much
goin' on in my head.

You know what's funny?

I was actually thinking
about, um, negan.

Like how? Like, a guy
like oliver cromwell,

I think maybe
he... he started out.

With the best
intentions, you know?

And then just kind of...

I don't know,
you lose sight of...

Lose sight of everything,
and then...

And then the way you go about
things defeats the purpose.

That's the thing
about family roots.

Dig deep enough, and you might
not like what you unearth.

And after invoking that name...

All right,
let's park this sucker.

I think it's time
we call it a night,

Because tomorrow,
the city of aberdeen calls,

And we continue
our journey for answers.

Beer?

By this point, he's changed
his profession.

Alexander... contractor.

He sounds a little shady.

I have a sneaking suspicion
that's actually on purpose.

Wow. Hold on.

Look at that dude.
Let's go talk to him.

Wow. These birds are beautiful.

- I'm steve.
- I'm norman.

Nice to meet you.
This is melissa.

Hi, steve. Melissa. Nice to meet you.
Hi, melissa.

Fancy trying one on the glove?
Sure.

She's so pretty.
You're so pretty.

Chillin' with an owl.

Aww.

He's so "harry potter,"
that one.

Hi.

I think carol should have
a bird on the show.

Does he look relaxed?

He looks relaxed, yeah.

He's not too bad. "Not too bad."

In my mind, I'm thinking,

"this bird could just
rip my face off."

Nah, he's never
done anything yet.

Yet.

Well.

Hello.

Riding in scotland, you get to
experience the scottish weather.

In all its cold, wet glory.

Day three, we continue
our travels toward aberdeen,

The home of melissa's
great-great-grandfather,

And where we'll explore
her family history.

Look at those guys,

Just chillin' out
in the middle of the field.

"Yeah, we're sheep, chillin'."

Wow. Look how pretty.

Aren't you freezing?

Want to get up close
and personal with...

With this... want to get out?

Let's go meet some sheep people.

Is that a farm?
Like, behind there?

Whoo!

Wow. What is this?

Wonder if that's... Hello?

Hi.

- Hello.
- Hi.

I'm melissa.

Hi. I'm alice. Nice to meet you.
Hi, alice.

Nice to see you.
Sorry, I've got muddy hands.

Hi. Norman.
It's nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you. Hi. Hello, sir.
How are you?

How are you, melissa?
This is my dad.

How are you? What's your name?

Graham.

We are one of two rare-breed
farm parks in scotland,

And we specialize in breeding.

Rare and endangered livestock.

This guy included?

Yes, yes, yes, yes. Yep.

This is runrig. What... what is this?
Is this...

So he's an english
longhorn bull.

So he's just a baby.
He's about a year.

Baby? Yeah.

Okay?

So, what are you guys
doing in scotland?

Well, I'm... long story short,

I'm tracing my family roots...

Okay... And I have
tracked them to aberdeen.

Well, luckily, a lot
of the stuff in aberdeen.

Is still present.

So nothing's really
changed that much. Good.

So I hope you find really
lovely, great things.

Thank you.

I have a lot...
A lot more research to do.

What do you think a day
in the life.

Of a sheepherder would've
been like back in the s?

Brutal.

You'd have to love the job,
because, you know,

You be with your flock
all the time.

You'd keep warm... you know,
your life was the sheep,

And if you lost them
or if something was ill.

Or something happened,
then that's you costing money.

That's your livelihood. Yeah,
that is your livelihood, yeah.

What made you guys get into,
saving livestock and so forth?

Well, my dad's
always been a farmer,

And then we work with
the rare breeds survival trust,

Which is, um, the only
organization to help rare breeds.

It's such a beautiful
place to live.

It was so nice,
to drive up here.

The north sea is right here,
and it's a really lovely view.

We've got lots
of lovely gully caves,

And it's all up the coast. Yeah.

And so if you wanna come see...
Okay.

That'd be really good.

Welcome to the north sea.

Wow. This is beautiful, though.

Wow!

Beautiful view.

And some very fresh air.

I would imagine that most people
that took residence around here.

Were farming
some way or another.

Um it would've been
a lot of farming.

And fishing and quarrying.

And, um, we've got the harbor
in aberdeen,

Which would've been
a fishing port at one point.

Do you know where
nigg bay would've been?

This is nigg bay.

This is nigg bay?

So there is a lighthouse, which
you... you can't really see.

At the moment,
but that's nigg bay.

So we are in nigg at the moment.

Wow. Yeah.

Nigg bay is...
Is where her family lived.

Well, there you go. Yeah.
Could've been right here.

So you might be actually seeing
what... what your ancestors saw.

They probably stood right here.

This is it.

This is kinda it.

This is my dream come true.

This is it right there.

There's something enchanting
about discovering.

You're standing in the shadows
of family ghosts,

And stumbling upon this place,
half a world away from home,

Feels less of a coincidence
with every wave that crashes.

So nice to meet you. You, too.

Ready? To the car.

To the car. Okay, bye.

Bye. Thank you so much.
Bye. Thank you.

Bye. Bye.

- My gosh.
- Dude!

Yeah, that was
a little emotional.

Throughout my life,

I've never had much
in the way of roots.

I didn't look back because
I didn't think

I had anything, really,
to look back to.

How do you feel?

I'm starting to feel
a little overwhelmed.

Yeah, so, your relatives
were right here,

Looking at that ocean.

I feel like I just...
It's all bubbling up,

And I feel like I wanna scream.

Aah! But I'm realizing now.

Just how mistaken I've been
all along.

But I feel so much better.

As we leave the area
of nigg bay,

It's a quick five-mile drive
up the coast.

To our final destination,
the port city of aberdeen.

The community in aberdeen
thrive to do really well,

From the paper mills
to the quarries.

And the fishing,
the oil industry.

This is a cool little area
right here, right?

Aberdeen has a lot of history.

That you have to look
a little bit harder for,

But once you find it,
it's pretty amazing.

Legend has it that the left arm.

Of scotland's
most celebrated folk hero.

Is buried somewhere in the city,

But I've heard there's
a statue of him around here.

That might be
a little easier to find.

Freedom!

William wallace was the guy.

That really wanted
freedom for scotland.

Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me.

Hey, do you guys know
where the will...

William wallace, memorial is?

It's just down there on the...

On the next crossroads
down there on the left.

Thank you, sir. Thank you.

He led the scots to battle
in the battle of falkirk.

And the battle of bannockburn.

All right. William wallace...
Is that him?

- Is that it, or no?
- I don't know.

Is it? It says "george" on it.

- George wallace?
- That's the wrong dude.

That's okay. We'll find him.

And we like to,
hail him as a hero.

Probably in the middle
of this courtyard.

Yeah, there you go. Look, look.

He's right there.
No, that's not him.

- Is that him right there?
- Yeah, it's gotta be.

It is that whole sense
of freedom.

That's what we're known for...
"freedom!"

And, I mean, yeah,
I think we were all.

Very proud of "braveheart."

It was a slightly
altered version of fact.

No, wait. Maybe that's him.

- The big one?
- No.

It created a lot of interest
in scotland,

So maybe it's a...
Maybe it's a good thing.

Despite how terrible it is.

That's got to be him.

Yeah, that's him.

Doesn't look anything
like mel gibson.

Wow.

Hey, stand in front of that.
Let me take your picture.

He was put to death.

Solely for his love of liberty.

I'm not gonna lie.

"Braveheart" is a great movie.

And although
william wallace's story.

May have been victim
to hollywood hyperbole...

Cool. I'm hungry.

I'm hungry, too.
All right, let's eat.

I can't help but admire.

His unwavering resolve
for independence.

What do you think of aberdeen?

So far, it's, like, a really
nice mix of old world and new.

Yeah. Weather's rough.

Like, you... you have to have.

A certain constitution
to... to do that, you know?

I don't know
that I would make it.

It's... it seems like
like hardworking,

Good people here.

Did you feel any... Vibrations?

Well, I-I-I felt...
You know, I did.

I got a real, like, very quick,
emotional reaction.

When she said we were in nigg.

"This is nigg bay."
I was like, "whoa, this is.

Where I've seen the writing
on the papers."

From what I've seen
in my research,

This is... I know this is.

At least where they were
for some time.

I don't know. It just...

It just like, quick.

And that's, like,
what I imagined in my head.

Here's to today.
Let's keep going.

Melissa's
great-great-grandfather.

Once called this place home...

Aberdeen archives next. It's on.

And we're off to see what
we can find out about his life.

- You ready?
- Not really.

I don't know
why I'm getting emotional.

It's just kind of crazy
being here.

Okay, let's go do this.

We're heading over
to the aberdeen archives.

They, by the time we get there,

Are... will have pulled
some stuff for me.

After three days of discovering
scotland, this is it,

A chance to finally learn
about alexander campbell,

Melissa's paternal,
great-great-grandfather.

I'm here to, see a historian.

Okay. I'll call upstairs...

Okay. Thank you so much... And
let them know you're here.

Thank you very much.

You were coming here
to see someone today?

Yes. I'll show you upstairs.

Okay.
They're just at the top floor.

All the central records
of the city.

Are locked away
behind these doors.

They go all the way back
to the th century.

The oldest, record we have
is a chart.

That was given to the city
by king william the lion.

In the s.

What about the campbells?

How... where do you think
that they might've come from?

It's hard to say how far back
they go and where they go.

It's also the origin
of the name campbell,

Because it's more
of a nickname originally.

The word originally
means "sneery".

"Sneery" like... effectively.

So, like... so, like...

So, you would sneer.

Sneery?

That's my resting face.

Sneery mcbride. Right.

So, that was... it all makes
so much sense right now.

But these are the census returns
for the campbells in .-

Robert. Isabella. James.

Margaret. Alexander.

That's my
great-great-grandfather.

But alexander campbell
is listed as a quarrier,

So he would've had a quarry.

He had one? He had a quarry.

They turn up in a couple of post
office directories, as well.

There he is listed.

Wow. Innkeeper?

Innkeeper.

Now, I've got
a slightly later one here,

But by this point,
he's changed his profession.

Alexander... contractor.

He sounds a little shady.

He's jack of
a great number of trades,

But by the same token,
he kind of never quite achieves.

A kind of prominence in the city
that other people do,

And I'm... I have
a sneaking suspicion that.

That's actually on purpose.

At this point in July ,

Alexander campbell
purchases two shares.

Previously, we have
detailed records.

Of what cargoes
people were bringing in.

Contraband rum, or...
So, that might...

What... it might be, like, rum.

It could be.
He could be a rumrunner.

This is for ,
and alexander campbell is noted.

As being a proprietor
of ironmonger's court.

This is the last place
where he lived.

What is ironmonger's court?

It's an alleyway that led off
of the main street.

Ironmonger?
Blacksmith, effectively.

There are three flats,

And the third one
is occupied by alexander.

There's a few photographs
that wou... that show.

The neighborhood around there,

Which was one of aberdeen's
most notorious slums.

These are very heavily
subdivided tenements.

So, you get numerous families.

Living in incredibly
cramped conditions.

The town decided to demolish
in the s...

Really? ...Because it was
a public health hazard.

So, this aberdeen, this is
the city as it was then.

That's the house...
That's the house,

Ironmonger's court, where he
would've lived in his last year.

Wow. And it's still there.

Wow. So, it's just...
just north of here.

They demolished
everything around it.

So, when he d*ed,

Did he have
pretty much nothing left?

Um, they don't have
a lot to their name.

This is, like, a great mystery.

It sounds shady as heck
to me... all of it.

This is the inventory.

Of the courtyard
of st. Fittick's at nigg,

Which is where he's buried.

There's a map in this book.

Which should tell you
how to get to it.

Excellent.

- You ready?
- Not really.

I don't know
why I'm getting emotional.

I don't know them.

I know.

It's just kind of crazy
being here.

Okay, let's go do this.

Is this it?

No.

It's like an easter-egg hunt.

Wait.

Yeah, that's it.

"Campbell."

- I don't know why I'm emotional.
- I'm sorry.

No.

Did you get "alexander"
in there anywhere?

Yeah, there you go.

"Alexander." "alexander."

I'm very happy with what I have.
Yeah.

It's great, right?

Ending up here and being able
to give melissa this gift.

Goes beyond everything
I hoped this ride could be.

It isn't often in this life.

That you're able
to show true appreciation.

To someone
you really care about.

We found it.

I know.

And this is an experience
I'll hold onto forever.

The germans have this word,
"fernweh,".

And it's what brought us
and countless others here.

To cure the homesickness felt.

For a place
we've never truly known.

The craziest thing
about this whole thing.

Is we were sh**ting
"the walking dead,".

Sitting between takes on this
field overlooking this cliff.

Melissa, come here.

And you go, "do you know
what'd be a great idea",

Is to go to scotland."

And I was like,
"that's what we'll do."

And here we are. Here we are.

From that moment,
we're at this moment.

I know. That's pretty rad.

But before we end our trip,
there's one more place

Melissa needs to see...

The last known address
of her ancestor

Alexander campbell,

Which, today, we found out
is still standing.

- Perfect.
- Is this your bar?

It is, yeah, yeah.

What do you know
about this building?

It... it was first used in ,
so it's years old.

And it was owned
by the mcbride family.

From the what family?

Mcbride family.

And there's a... there's
a photograph on the wall there.

I just got chills. That's crazy.

Is this like coinkydink
all over the place?

Wha-a-a-a-t? I gotta...

Which one's who? I've gotta
get a picture of that.

Mcbride... you're
on the end right here.

I see.

I-I need another drink.

I think we hit the nail
on the head.

Do you know about
next door upstairs?

I know that there were
flats upstairs.

On my great-great-grandfather's
death certificate,

It says this is where
he passed away,

upperkirkgate.

Would've been right above
the bar, yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, so the wake
would've been here.

So they d*ed right above us.

I think... I think... I-I...
That's crazy.

But... I mean, we've come this far
and it all leads to this bar.

And it happened above us.

I just feel it. I just feel it.

Yeah, this is the spot.

Watching you do this has been.

Really fascinating,
I have to say.

I've never had the desire
to look it up.

I've been on my own for so long.

That I've sort of
pushed it all back.

It's been... it kinda makes me
wanna do it a little bit now.

I'm glad we get
to do it together.

Yeah, I'm glad we did it together.
Unforgettable.

To alexander.

Forget not.

Yeah.

What I can't understand.

Is how I'm not
that crazy about whiskey.

Maybe you're a rum girl.

From the start,

I knew this was destined
to be a different kind of ride.

Being able to take this journey.

Into the past with melissa.

Has been
a truly magical experience.

That we surely will forget not.
